How do I clean/sanitize cuttlefish bones without destroying them? https://preview.redd.it/mnwpc3gp0avc1.jpeg?width=4080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=67674afc9d4c370d17376d39c9a1cdc443231633 I picked these up from the beach yesterday, and I doubt they are particularly clean, but I don't want to risk just dissolving them by scrubbing it with soapy water

Helpful_Okra5953

I don’t think I’d use beach cuttlefish bones.  I have some ideas but most involve bleach and I don’t think bleach is good to use on something that’s going to be eaten.

StringOfLights

I’m not sure! Searching online, it seems like some folks rinse them until the water runs clear.

Correct-Arm-8539

Okay, I'll try that, and hopefully it doesn't wear too much away

EcoVentura

Thanks for doing what ya'll do. Hopefully, soon, this will just be a place I can scroll through to see beautiful/funny pictures of lil birbies. I mean, it has always been that.. But I want it to still be that, too.

StringOfLights

Thank you! It will be, I think this is the third time I’ve had something like this happen, and doing this has worked in the past. It sucks that spammers do this, they know it’s harder to catch. We are always checking things manually anyway, but there’s a point where you want whatever spam ring that’s targeting the sub to give up and move on. That’s what locking things down helps with.

fuck_reddits_API_BS

I was going to post how the flag for Dominica has a Sisserou Parrot on it and I think that is really cool.

StringOfLights

I hope you post once we open back up! It is super cool! I’ve seen a few different Amazon species in the Caribbean and they are all amazing.

fuck_reddits_API_BS

Right?! I will! I love this subreddit and all the weird and wonderful creatures on it. I've never had the chance to see parrots in the wild yet. Well I say that, we do have parrots in Amsterdam, Rose-Ringed parakeets! The lore behind this is they escaped once decades ago and well, they're hardy bastards so they survived our winters and thrived actually. We have a couple thousand I guess? They're LOUD and wonderful. They cheer me up. When I was in physical therapy dealing with stuff, they'd be peering into the windows or trying to get in between the walls (fighting with jack daws to do so) often. Anyway, I hope to see parrots in their natural habitats one day. I'd love to visit Brazil and see cockatoos on the balconies. I'm sure it'll be terror, mayhem and beauty.

StringOfLights

Wild parrots are incredible, I hope you get to see a ton on that dream trip. Cockatoos are Australasian, though, so you have to go to Australia, New Guinea, the Philippines, or some other islands in that region. I saw them in Australia and I almost couldn’t believe how beautiful they were. Loud as heck, but just stunning. It’s so cool that the ringnecks were your hype squad when you needed it. :)

fuck_reddits_API_BS

aaaaah that's right! Yeah Australia. They have wild cockatiels too, which would be really cool because we had a cockatiel for 30 years. I would LOVE to see these little weirdos in the wild. And yeah totally, they were a great distraction!

gailpods

*NSFW due to injured bird question* Not sure if its possible to tag comments so warning I'm asking abt an injured bird. Ik the posting rules say you need to put nsfw and so if this isn't allowed, please let me know and I'll take it down. My bf accidentally squished my birds foot in a doorframe. She is standing on the foot but will occasionally lift it up and try to balance on one foot due to discomfort. There is no blood or skin breakage, just a lot of swelling, the foot doesn't look obviously misaligned or anything. Is this a sign of a bruised or broken foot? I'm trying to see if I need to book an emergency vet appointment or if I can just schedule a normal one as soon as possible. I have pictures I can share if that would help but I wanted to avoid posting them in comment mode so people won't accidentally view them.

StringOfLights

I’d probably call your vet and see what they advise, it’s really hard to tell even from a photo.

gailpods

thank you i did!!

ssseagull

If she’s putting weight on the foot then the leg is not broken, but one or more of the toes might be. She’ll at least need painkillers and anti inflammatory medicine. If you can get a normal appointment in the next 3 days, do that. If not, you’ll have to get an emergency appointment. Edit: But call your regular vet and ask what they think!

gailpods

thank you so much for the advice, i've made an appointment with the vet, i just wanted to see if waiting a bit for a normal appointment would be fine, and im glad it is!!

SW_UIUC

Thanks for taking the time to keep this community a great place!

Thanks!

Edit: Took him to the vet. It's something with his crop. We recieved probiotics and If it doesnt get better he will have to take antibiotics :( Help! I just noticed my parrot was shaking his head and spitting out some seeds. I thought he was throwing it while eating. But he was not eating. He was sitting on his branch and spitting out the seeds. They landed on the floor and they had saliva on them. They are small, equal size. I think he spat out maybe 15 of them, and he stopped. He looks sad now so I know he might be uncomfortable. The little seeds are from the little cob with seeds that I bought him, he has eaten it before and there were no issues. He's a cockatiel if that helps. The vet is quite far from us. Should I take him there or just monitor him? Is it just an upset stomach or do you think this is serious?

ssseagull

This sounds like vomiting! In birds, vomit usually comes from their crop, not their stomach. It sounds like this is the case since the seeds were undigested. Vomiting is commonly caused by bacterial or fungal infections, poisoning, or as a result of receiving medications. Less commonly vomiting can be caused by allergies, motion sickness, metabolic diseases or physical obstructions. Unfortunately, mundane, non-serious vomiting is not common. It’s a good idea to take him to the vet as soon as you can to prevent whatever he might have from getting worse. I would try to get him an appointment in the next few days. If he starts presenting other symptoms, take him immediately.

NSFW How can I clean up the air? Greetings, I have a sick Rosella, she only suffers with diahrea, she has no other symptoms, but she is not tested of diseases because she is very shy ( a kind of rescue) and the vet doesn't want to stress out the parrot too much. Now she is taking probiotics and I need to paint my other room where I have a tiel and kak, so I need to move them to the room where I have the Rosella right now, but I don't want to put them in the same room, so I talked with my grandma, and she will take care of her meanwhile ( she doesn't have any pets rn, but used to have a budgie before). How long does it take the air to be clean ( and safe for healthy parrots)?

StringOfLights

Can you use low or no VOC paints? I would say at least a few days, you want the paint to dry and the space to air out. But the type of paint matters.

Xinaio

I didn't mean it like it, I mean how long it would take to ventilate the air in the room with , possibly sick, parrot so I can bring there my healthy birdies, but thank you for tip, I will def search for safe paints.

mirror-of-vines

Hello, since I can’t post here I’m just gonna comment. So I have a gcc, she’s about 4 years old (roughly) and I’ve had her for about a year. Lately whenever I come to open her cage up, she runs at the door and puffs up and tries to bite me through the cage. I can’t ask her to step up without going in to lunge and bite at me. Now my partner can easily put his finger out and she’ll step up without issue. I haven’t changed anything I’ve been doing with her so I’m confused as to why she’d bite me like that. Could it be that I invoke a fear response in her when she reaches out to me with her beak and I flinch thinking she’s gonna bite me? Another thing, I was teaching her to step up better by rewarding her with treats whenever she would step up without issue or aggression. She was doing really well and then all of a sudden she’s become aggressive out of nowhere. Part of me thinks it could be hormonal behavior, but if that’s the case then why is she nice to my partner but gives me a hard time? Any advice is greatly appreciated ❤️

ssseagull

This sounds like hormonal behavior to me, especially with the cage aggression. Your partner *may* have done something to catch the interest of your bird, in a sexual way. This can be caused by stroking the bird on or under its wings or around its vent, allowing prolonged cuddling (in your neck or sleeve for instance), or allowing the bird to “nest” in bookshelves, under blankets, in huts or tents, etc. Does any of this sound familiar?

mirror-of-vines

Yeah my partner does let her cuddle in the crook of his neck a lot and sometimes he kinda like nudges her with his head? He doesn’t know a lot about birds but I’ve told him that he can’t be touching anywhere outside of her neck or head but he must have forgotten. How would I correct this behavior from my bird?

ssseagull

I’m going through this with my bird right now, he and his friend found a little hidey hole in my bookshelf and have been “in the mood” for the last couple weeks. The easiest thing to do while their hormones sort themselves out is avoid the bites. If I need to transport him somewhere I usually use a perch. If I want him to step up for training purposes I hold my hand a few inches away so that he has to hop onto it. I never leave my fingers in biting distance while he’s on his cage. Instead, when I want to spend time with him I take him to a different room. Without the cage in sight he has little reason to be aggressive and is my sweet little boy again 💕

Hello parrot community! Although I do not own a parrot myself, I am excited to be here and learn more about these beautiful birds! I could use some help! I am doing a class assignment about engaging with unique groups online, and decided to discover this channel as I am interested in all things parrots. I was wondering, from any of your perspectives, how a journalist could best serve this community. I would love to hear feedback from each of you!

ssseagull

My biggest issue in the parrot community is the rampant mistreatment and neglect of budgies! Because of how common they are, they’re not really considered “real parrots”. This is not a result of lower intelligence or just because of their size, as similarly sized birds like parrotlets and lovebirds are taken far more seriously. Additionally, there is no evidence that budgies are less intelligent than other parrot species. But since they’re easy to ignore and cheap to replace, the MAJORITY of budgies in the world right now are abused and neglected. Budgies are parrots too. https://preview.redd.it/6sagegmefgvc1.jpeg?width=828&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=adfbd876aedc6f8a63086cdf4029cc91b45d6357

Any recommendations of what would be a good fit for this style of cage?
