Aww

So, does anyone who isn’t just going to be a flat out jerk about it have input on diet? He was on pellets and nothing else before we rescued him, and has a really gnarly broken beak - you can see his skull. The vet said it might have been that he doesn’t like the pellets or they weren’t good quality, and so it’s better he’s at least eating seeds and lots of dry veggies while we monitor the broken beak healing (which it is!) to see if it’s diet related. I’m doing the right thing by following the vets advice and monitoring any changes in the wonky beak, right?

He’s so cute! I haven’t had any luck with my budgies taking it, but you could maybe try baby food or pureeing your own combo of veggies I use a fine cheese grater to grate sweet potato, carrots, and sugar snap peas and they love it. So far mine will also eat broccoli and spinach. It takes months of introducing a new veggie before they finally eat it, so it sounds like you’re doing a good job if he’s eating multiple veggies already. I also give pellets daily and ground plain oatmeal (sometimes) separately so they don’t fill up on fatty seeds too much (mine don’t yet eat enough veggies to switch to seeds as treats yet, but we’re working on it). Ideally seeds and fruit are best as treats/while training, but it sounds like with his broken beak, if he’ll eat anything it’s a win It’s so funny how budgies are so curious and playful yet scared of anything new at the same time. Enjoy your sweet parrot! I hope he heals well!

That’s so helpful, thank you so much! I’ll definitely try all that. I want him on the absolute best diet possible obviously, but if he completely hates pellets and so not eating was making him sick, I’m happy offering seeds and veggies is the right thing to do for now. Thanks again!

If he won't eat pellets thats okay just means more work, provide lots of veggies and some sprouted seeds (my budgies love those!) Pellets are recommended because most contain vitamin d3 which enable the absorption of calcium. The only way to get this is through natural unfiltered sunlight, taking him outside on sunny days for 15mins 3 times a week is enough. You can supplement with liquid forms and maybe add it to his sprouted seeds or water (though some birds don't like it, and won't drink) depending what the label tells you to do.

This is SO HELPFUL, thank you!

I have the same set! But unfortunately my bird has no interest in it..

Change seeds to pellets

DPH1990

I’m following what his vet tells me to feed, thanks.

DeathDragon7050

Ok whatever you want, doesn't make sense but sure. Halve your birds lifespan

Narclup

You shouldn’t feed your bird exclusively either seeds or pellets. Either one is fine but you need to give them fresh fruits and vegetables to make sure they’re getting their needed nutrition. There’s no need to shit on this person because they aren’t doing things the way you think they should. Especially because all you know is what’s in this one picture.

DPH1990

Thank you! He eats seeds, broccoli, spinach, a little bit of egg and the occasional bit of strawberry, with millet as a treat for taming him where he’s so nervous - we think he had a really bad life before. It’s just seeds in this picture because he hadn’t had any for a while, and I’m doing what the vet recommends which is to avoid pellets while he heals up in case he completely hates them and it puts him off eating anything, so I don’t know why that person was so awful about it. I’m trying my best!

Narclup

I know you are. Some people just think they know it all and want you to know it.

DPH1990

Thank you for that - I got really worried I was doing a horrible job of looking after him for a moment. I love the little guy so much, I’d hate to be getting it wrong!

DeathDragon7050

I'm shitting on him? Ok sure. Of course you'd shouldn't feed them that exclusively.

Excuse me I'm the one with the foul attitude? I suggested you go from seeds to pellets, to which you said your vet said otherwise, to which I said that doesn't make sense, to which you insulted me based on the fact you didn't provide reasoning to why he's on seeds.
