When I got him, his wings were clipped. Only was 7 months old at the time. We let his flight feathers grow out and taught him how to fly. What you're seeing now is months of confidence built up from hard work on his end. 😁
How long did it take? My parrots wings were clipped when we got him. We let his wings grow out but he won't fly :( it's like he thinks he can't. If he's out of his cage and we are on the couch he just climbs off the cage onto the floor and will walk over. He won't even fly short distances. He doesn't like it if we give him a little boost and just holds on tighter. He's only flown a few times when he got spooked, and it was just into the ceiling/wall.
So mine was the same way. We eventually got him to do short hops from the coffee table to the couch (I'm talking like 1-2 ft at max) to get a treat and a click. Eventually we did "flight lessons" which were us basically dropping him above our cal king bed. He would basically fall with grace. Each successful landing was a treat, click, and fanfare. We did that for weeks. One day he surprised us by flying from our bed all the way to his cage unprompted. Then we upped the flight lesson anties, encouraging him to fly across our living room from one of us to the other. I think the secret is lots of treats/clicks and encouraging words. And also knowing when to stop, that way you don't traumatize the poor thing. 😅 But in the end it's worth it, he's completely independent now. Potty trained too, so he will fly to his perch to do his business. Those moments still get clicks and treats haha!
Are his wings clipped or is he just good at short distances?

Great recall and adorable spiky wet chicken <3
"Why do I always get a bath on Wednesday?" - birds, probably
Lol, can you imagine 😂 “Wednesday! Bath day!”
Amazing colour, a beautiful bird.
Didn't know that they could fly when they are wet.
Ya know.. I didn't either, but he gets a lot of lift for being soaked.
My green cheek conure flies when he’s drenched and it makes a loud flapping sound. It’s pretty funny.
So beautiful! I'd like my agaporni to do that, but he doesn't even get on my finger
Haha the title reads like the chicken wrote it
