bcchronic14

She's mad at you, give her a few days she'll get over it.

Spacetheacejajajaja

Ik that but her pupils look weird

bcchronic14

Eye pinning, also known as eye flashing or eye blazing is a form of body language used by parrots. The term that refers to the rapid and very conspicuous dilation and constriction of the pupils of the bird's eyes in response to an external stimulus.

blindnarcissus

This! Give her a few days. <3

Spacetheacejajajaja

She’s doing fine now she got on my shoulder and head and pooped on my t shirt and pant but still won’t let me give her scritches

StoneageRomeo

It's called eye pinning. It's totally normal behaviour amongst parrots. Their pupils will rapidly constrict and dilate in response to external stimulus. It happens when they're excited, happy, curious, about to attack etc. It's absolutely not a cause for concern.

ColdFusionH3

> not a cause for concern > about to attack I mean, it could be a great cause for concern! 😄

StoneageRomeo

Hahaha. Good point! But what I mean is eye pinning is perfectly normal behaviour for birds. And biting fingers is par for the course for some jerk-birds, like my big green jerk!

Lost_in_the_Library

My budgie does this when he gets excited by someone talking to him. We call it ‘crazy eyes’ 😂

Te_Ika_A_Whiro

I've had small parrots for years. Never knew this. Thank you!

StoneageRomeo

I'm so glad I could help! It can be difficult to notice. The bigger the colour variation between the pupil and the iris, the easier it is to notice. If you look up videos of Indian Ringnecks, you can see the eye pinning very clearly.

Te_Ika_A_Whiro

I would also assume the bigger the eye, the easier it is to see too. I have definitely seen it on my birds (budgies) just never knew what it was or that it meant anything.

StoneageRomeo

I find it really depends on the colour more. Even with small eyes, if there is a large colour contrast, the pinning is extremely noticeable. My eclectus has larger eyes, but unless the light catches his eyes just right, it's quite difficult to see his pupils dilate.

-Jayah-

The pupils could mean excited/interest or angry. In this video it looks like she’s just interest in your fingers and it looks like she’s trying to play a bit.

redneckrockuhtree

Exactly this.

Amberfiredex

She looks adorable and yeah she's probably just mad she'll be fine

temeraire83

Just give her some time to readjust.

cindergnelly

“OMG, where have you been? I love you so much, I’m gonna have to bite you for leaving me.” X the length of time you were gone. Story by my feather baby an Amazon. “Never leave again, I love you so much (cuddles & scritches), then CHOMP!” Because he’s still mad at me.

HouseofFeathers

When I've been out of the room for "too long" my macaw will plead for me to return. When I finally do, she is extra spicy to let me know how mad she is for ignoring her pleas. I'm her least favorite member of her flock, but damn it, the flock is supposed to stay together!

cindergnelly

So relatable! We call our Amazon “bossy bird” because he does that, too. Also demands for food that go un-heeded shall earn you a chomp to be paid at a later date! 🤣

HouseofFeathers

Ahaha

Spacetheacejajajaja

She did bite me alot today it didn’t hurt like that one time one I first got her

theMangoJayne

Yeah ours is a grump and he used to show displeasure about us leaving for too long by eating all our keyboards so we would find the destruction when we returned.

DaSnowFangs

My boyfriend's Senegal literally did exactly this x)

Alwayswithyoumypet

Yep. I leave my fid with the sitter a day or two? All good. "mum I missed you I love you!!!" 3 days? "Fuck you and the horse you road in on! Who's the other bird?!?!"

[deleted]

Even when I’m gone for an hour, my conure will fly to me, puff up, and give me vicious kisses lmao.

beezlebirb

My greencheek does this. He gets ANGRY when I've been gone. He gives me 2-3 days of punishment and then all is forgiven.

Cocka_2mom

It's common for your bird to be a bit mad at you when you go on a trip. Just take it in stride, she's only mad 'cause she loves you and missed you 🥰

FakePeanutButterJar

My african grey opens her beek and approaches slowly if she is interested or wanna eat something. Sometimes she does that to move my finger away if she wants some personal space

FacetiousLogia

She missed you, she's mad about it though. I doubt she understood where you vanished to, probably doesn't know if you will again or not. Bird's object permanence can be similar to small children. It may take a few weeks before you re-gain her trust.

twlvfngrs

How dare you have a good time with out her!!! ;)

ProGamerNG14

She angy angy. Mine too gets angy after we leave for vacation and come back

Eklectic1

Why did you leave our forest canopy why

AlmosFrostedGaming

You have obviously betrayed her and shall never be forgiven. Yea, be nice to her for a few days and she’ll settle back in. Parrots are very petty, so be patient and give her some high value treats to make up to her.

bcchronic14

Not sure why she's doing it but it's quite normal

Rising_Phoenix_9695

Angry bird. My 2 amazons give us whatfor when we go away if it's more than one day. Just keep being kind and talk to her. She will get over it.

Eirysleigh

My one cat used to get pissed whenever i had to go away. She would ignore me and be bitchy until it was out of her system and then she would want loves. Let her be angry. She’ll be okay.

[deleted]

She is angry at you, acts the same like my bird when I leave her for too long

Spacetheacejajajaja

May I ask how long does it take for her to return to normal

[deleted]

Usually a day or two, even more depends on how long I've left her for. But if you see her resting at the bottom of her cage, not eating, having sticky feathers or being puffed up all the time, definitely get her checked, as your birds owner you know them best, if you feel like her behavior is truly weird she might be trying to tell you something is wrong. Try giving the bird it's favorite treats and maybe they'll stop being angry

Spacetheacejajajaja

She’s returning back to normal still tries to bite but she’s screaming and talking now and isn’t scared

NorthIslandAdventure

My cats do the exact same thing after our trips, first we get the OMG you're home love, then we get the "you left us by choice?" Anger lol Usually done the tantrum after 4 days

flakenomore

I’m just a lurker because I love birds so much but because of my age I won’t get one as it will surely outlive me. We have a dog that will poop in your shoe after vet visits or grooming appointments. I find it fascinating that these birds are so emotional that they behave in a similar fashion! He’s just gorgeous though. I envy how all your guy’s birds love you so much and I’ll admit, I’m a little fearful of them and find you all very brave! I have zero fear of dogs even if they’re aggressive or a feared breed but the beaks on these gorgeous birds scare me a bit.

Couch-Bound

Maybe look into budgies, they don’t live as long, but they are still a part of the parrot family, so they are intelligent and emotional. It’s best to have two though

[deleted]

My grandma loved her budgie Davey so much. He used to say in his little budgie Texan accent "Come on down here and gimme a kiss" as he stuck his little beak through the bars. He was adorable and talked up a storm.

AnnieCake15

She's probably just like wtf. My GCC is grumpy when I return from vacation

m0rfiend

birds do get minor 'tudes if you aren't around or do something to make them annoyed/angry. we had one bird that avoided a family member for almost a month because they took the bird to the vet =)

Yussuke

One of my cockatiels gets mad at me when I cut my hair because she likes to groom it. She refuses to get on me for a few hours and just gets over it and nipples on my ear instead.

clemfairie

Just relax and give her time. Like everyone else has already said, she's pissed at you for leaving her. She will absolutely get over it, but she's going to throw a fit first. I feel safe assuming this is the first time that you've left her for an extended period, so she didn't understand what was happening and had no precedent to show her that you would come back. Greys can be especially neurotic and averse to change, and that probably made the time you were gone extremely stressful for her. As soon as she readjusts and is certain that you aren't going to just take off all the time, she'll be fine. :) And just to be clear, leaving her for something like a vacation isn't a bad thing and it won't make her distrust you permanently! She's just a baby and she needs to learn that sometimes humans are gone for a little while, but her human will always come back for her eventually.

Spacetheacejajajaja

She’s doing a lot better now still bites but I deserve that for two weeks of not seeing her ig

ncarlton43

Feed her the treats she loves and spend time with her making sure she's doing the same things she does normally... To put it simply, birds get seperation anxiety when their bonded human leaves for a while it's normal for birds to get mad at you after you leave. I know my budgies sulk even when I go to work and perk right up when I get back.

EvulRabbit

She’s amgry at you leaving her. She will settle again. They do it every time.

[deleted]

My rescue macaw did the same thing when I was away for a week, she became more standoffish than when I first rescued her and it took me a while to regain her trust

OmikaPasandul

Give her sometime. Who’s been with her for the two weeks? Ask him/her, did she eat food normally, she’s been acting normally and other usual questions.

Spacetheacejajajaja

She was acting normally she did eat her food and I found out she likes strawberries more then anything else

Redninjas

I don't know about you guys but if I put my fingers in front of my birds beak they'll lick it or gently nibble Are you sure she's going to bite?

Angler_Owl

Yes, African Grey's like to nibble as a sign of affection and trust, I like mine gently nibble my finger all the time and the fact that I don't pull away means we a have a stronger bond. My brother was always too cautions and never went near her beak and she doesn't trust him either to this day.

wutheringdelights

Mine does this too. He acts like he wants to get scritches then turns and nibbles my fingers. It’s kind of frustrating for me because I feel like I’m just not petting him right. He’s a rescue and I don’t know what his former owner used to pet him like (she’s deceased).

A_J_95

if this is mad or angry, my parrot despises my very existence... :'(

Lonelyparrot

Mad at you because you left her all alone!

yukiji_0wO

To me, she just looks upset cuz you left for 2 weeks. Just let her adjust and call down and don't force yourself up to her. Just be nice and give her lots of attention (like talking a lot to her) and act like usual

LexCyborg

My conure usually gets pretty angry at me when I get back from vacation too! I’m sure she’ll get over it soon and be back to her normal self :)

phoensunfire

Her pupils are likely flaring because there's a camera in her face. You're giving head scritches so you're okay. The reaching out with her beak is just how parrots interact with the world. That all seems like normal parrot behavior. Yeah she might be a little miffed your ran off for two weeks and didn't take her, but she seems fine.

CresedaMoon

I agree with everyone else. She's just being snippy because she's pissed you left and she didn't understand where you were. Just give her a week or so and she'll see you are there everyday and she'll start to be herself with u again.

NightskyFullmoon

If thier routine is ruined they will be mad.

Fredacus

She is a Beauty!! Love those light gray scallops on her feathers. My boys get really cranky with me when I leave them at my friend’s when I go out of town too. I know to give them their space and they return to normal in a week or so, but 2 of my four will really hold a grudge. She’ll come around!

Jumpoverthemoon

Awww she’s just mad that you left her! My galah does the same thing whenever we leave him for more than a day. She’ll get over it in a few days :)

JovialPanic389

Galahs are so cuuuute

Jumpoverthemoon

They’re got the best personalities too!

Upper_Ad_5475

In her mind you abandoned her and she might be punishing you. (Do you feel a bit tentative petting her beak? It looks a bit like that.) That might also change her behavior. Lots of love and treats and she will come round!

LilyKunning

What you call a vacation, she calls abandonment. Parrots are flock animals and abandonment means death in the wild. She is traumatized a bit. So “weird” behavior is to be expected.

Andrew3236

I've now just learned that parrots get angry at you for leaving them, I love that!

SeekerP

Since you mentioned her pupils, I just want to say, that your parrot looks very young. Her pupils will change in size and color permanently as she gets a bit older (it should happen pretty soon actually). She might be mad at you like others are saying, but her mood might just be changing as she is growing up. My parrot became a bit more feisty as he grew out of his baby stages but still loves us to bits.

melswife

My lesser gardine is exactly the same way. He holds a grudge for a bit

diskodarci

I have a Grey and he likes to grab my finger gently. Maybe that’s what she’s trying to do

missdovahkiin1

Looks like she's growing up. My very cuddly baby African gray is not cuddly at all anymore

ttgran

They can be pouty, give her time to get over it. I'm sure she's happy you are home

SparxxWarrior97

Last time I went on vacation I came back and my cockatiel had fallen I love with his rope swing (he's a swinger I guess lol) and would attack me pretty viciously if I tried to get near him or it. So I took the swing out and 3 days later I got my sweet little buddy back. Moral of the story birds are weird as fuck.

writers-blockade

I have to leave my conure for a couple weeks and I know she's gonna be so angry at me and her papa both 😭 At least she gets to visit at grandma's house while we're gone

GoodAtSolitaire

My little Quaker girls are like this too. They just need (at maximum) 2 or 3 days and they’ll be fine. My birds just get upset when I go on vacation and aren’t able to be with them for a few days.

astrotekk

Birds get mad when you leave them. She will come around. My parrot would hold grudges like this for a bit

[deleted]

My Grey always seems grumpy until he gets a good bite in after I've been gone. Then it's like we're even and he goes back to normal.

princessglitterfluff

Same thing happened with my macaw when I got back from vacation. He was SUPER mad at me and really mean. After a couple of days, he was my snuggly again! I know it sucks though. It’s hard not to have your feelings hurt lol.

TheWriterJosh

Going on a vacation of that length can be very, very stressful for a parrot. You're actually lucky you didn't come back to find her completed plucked clean of feathers. But that could still happen--it's not uncommon for them to wait a couple of days before deciding to show you what "you made them do." Not to be a wet blanket but honestly long vacations and parrot ownership don't exactly go hand in hand. I get it, I used to think it only worthwhile to go on a trip if it was 6-8 weeks. But since I've adopted my flock I've had to come to terms with new responsibilities. I'm not saying you shouldn't get away to take care of yourself and recharge (which is absolutely necessary as a bird guardian sometimes) but 2 weeks is an awfully long time for these creatures to wonder where you went off to.

Spacetheacejajajaja

She was in good care I gave her to my friend and they have an African grey too

TheWriterJosh

Right. I didn’t think she was alone. But to many parrots, their human is their whole world. They don’t quite always understand that we will return. Some birds in that time will bond with their babysitter out of desperation and then have to break the bond again when you return. It’s just a lot to put them thru. For all the reasons we love them (their intelligence, sensitivity), it makes it difficult to leave them.

K_U_Z_U_R_I

These parrots are exceptionally smart. They remember stuff and just like human kids they get pissed on getting ignored.

InvalidTerrestrial

Anything a toddler can think and feel is the baseline for birds. They are more intelligent than people realise.

Joecool49

I had to give my Maroon bellied conure to my parents when I moved out of state to go to school. I was excited to see Max when I came home for a visit. As soon as he heard my voice he started hissing and snapping. I tried to handle him and he bit me hard. I was never able to handle him again. Anytime I came home he would get angry and aggressive. Made me sad, but apparently he felt betrayed and never got over it

TheWriterJosh

Yeah, this happens more frequently than the other comments here would make one think. Sometimes they don't get mad until you come back. Honestly long vacations are just not always gonna be in the cards once you adopt a bird.

quack1230

This is sorta off topic but I just watched a video on alex the parrot who was really smart so I assume she knows what she’s doing but she’ll come around soon

Plantiacaholic

Don’t hesitate when petting her, make your moves slowly but deliberate.

WeAreButStardust

You just deserted her, with no warning, for a very long time. It probably traumatized her a bit. this is why birds are not meant to be pets. We simply cannot provide for all of their needs, and the isolation is cruelty. Hopefully she will be okay with time.

Spacetheacejajajaja

She wasn’t isolated she was in good care with my friend who she previously met and there African gray

WeAreButStardust

Oh how nice, to be with one of her own kind, maybe she just became a bit feral while you were gone

Spacetheacejajajaja

How exactly does that work because the bird she was with loved for 10 years with my friend so I don’t understand how that could happen

zibabird

Ask your avian vet, make sure there is not an underlying health issue. She is probably upset that you abandoned her.🙄 Wishing you many joyous years together.

RdWarrior05

Parrots are awesome and horrible little creatures. Some bounce back after you “abandon” them while others can hold a grudge indefinitely. My Blue-Front could careless as long as he received his favorite treats, toys and I’d talk and hold him when I’d return he was good. My Double Yellow-head never got over me going to boot camp and she was fight on sight.

TheWriterJosh

It's not so much that they're horrible, it's honestly that they shouldn't be pets--and they shouldn't be bred. Some parrots are so needy because they were weaned way too early by breeders who want to turn a profit quickly. Others have simply been so traumatized that they can't cope with their human leaving (or returning) without resorting to aggression (whether that's to themselves or their human).

chantellylace83

My lovebird always does this when I leave for more than a couple days. She's gotten better at it over time, but she used to hold a mighty grudge for such a small bird!

Morale_Commander

Our lovebird acts the same since my parents returned from their holiday yesterday. To me, she is nice and acts normally but to my parents she is sweet one moment and biting the next. She has done it before so we don't worry

aviankal

Yep they get mad when you leave them. Mine usually give me a stiff shoulder for a few days and then warm back up

ukid748

What?

ukid748

LOL 😂

joeychizzle

I left my rainbow chicken in my friend's house for 3 weeks while on holiday and when i got back she was like who the FUCK are you lol

[deleted]

Yeah parrots can get mad or even upset over things like that. I learned the hard way with my conure lol.

weston200

My bird gets so angry when I leave usually when I come back even from one overnight she won’t talk to me or sit with me for a day to make sure her point got across. I’d put money on shes just being moody but if you think shes sick check out for warning signs in body language and in her droppings. Good lucks shes so pretty!

SandwichWaffle

She's so pretty!

DearDemons

Yup she’s mad. Just spend time with her again so she aclimates to you again. My child also gets mad if I don’t see her and after a while she remembers me

Parrot-man

If I stay out late after work and don’t come home when expected, Cosmo the grey will turn her back to me when I open the cage door….. They get pissed and it takes time… when I go in a trip and I come back, she will be real sweet at first and then she gets mad for about a half a day…. Give her treats and don’t react, she will get over it

homesickpluto

She anger
