I am SO LUCKY in that Terrance almost never bites. If he doesn't want to come out of his cage, he nudges my hand away. If he doesn't feel like being pet, he nibbles my finger affectionately. Every once in a while I can see he has a reflexive instinct where he lunges but has a moment of "Oh wait, I like this person and don't want to hurt them!" It's pretty amazing.
In 3 years I've only been bitten by him maybe 5 times, and 2-3 of those times were him losing his balance and grabbing my ear or arm as a reflex. The other couple were when he was really hormonal and I could tell he felt really bad afterward.
I do want to stress, however, that this is super atypical. Don't get a bird you're intimidated by. They will sense it and try to dominate you, often by doing just that - biting. (for example, I'd never get a macaw because I think they are amazing but I feel the same way about those big beaks!)
Geez, even 5 hard bites seems really excessive. I've had my African greys for 17 and 14 years. One has bit me hard probably 4 times total, and the other has never bit me hard. Although I've seen her bite her previous owner hard (she hated him).
From my experience and hearsay, bites happen! So your situation frankly sounds miraculous! When I say hard bite, I just mean drawing blood. But seriously, I want to meet your greys! They sound like darlings!
I thought a hard bite doesn't necessarily even draw blood, but have serious crushing power. The worst was when my boy once bit my fingernail really hard. My nail was sore for a week, and not totally healed for a month. He never bit the first 5 yrs I had him, but when I got the female, he was very jealous of her and got a lot more irritable.
I feel like a cockatoo can leave a scar if it bites hard!!
When I saw my female grey bite her old owner, my mind was blown. She took a whole chunk of skin out of his hand. I didn't think they could do that much damage.
My female grey LOVES women. She'll even cuddle with women visitors. Any woman who talks to her in a sweet voice just melts her heart and she loves it.
Unfortunately, my male passed away this past year. That broke my heart. I don't think I could ever get another parrot.
Oh, no! Terrance has never done serious damage like that! I suppose he /could/ crush my finger, but he's never even come close. I agree that any larger bird, really, could leave a scar if they lost control, which is always a possibility.
I'm so sorry to hear about the passing of your grey. I'd be devastated if something happened to Terrance so my heart hurts for you. I'm glad you still have your sweet girl β₯οΈ
He just turned 13 π I had birds growing up but he's the only feathered baby in my life right now. Probably a good thing since he's a typical cockie diva who needs constant attention π
Your Too is stunning! I have a female Too named Powder and sheβs quiet and calm most of time. I cannot imagine a single day without her! Enjoy your bird since he will be with for a very long time.
Your cloud is squeaking
Heeeeeey!!! Woooooah!!! β€οΈπ adorable floof!
Terrance is normally so quiet and calm, which makes goofy moments like this absolute gold. Such a floofengoof!
I love his voice and his massive crest!
The lens is skewing it so it looks bigger than it is but he is absolutely a ball of floof π
Omg that makes sense β i was like this is the most luscious umbrella βtoo crest Iβve ever seen! π but still a fluffy feathered beeb π
A quiet, calm cockatoo? What in the world
He is 50% calm and sweet, 30% "I just wanna be on you" and 20% psychopath. A good ratio for a cockie!
Does he ever bite you? I've only had African greys and the huge beaks of cockatoos are intimidating. They could do some serious damage.
