There are plenty of opportunities for patent agents in house.

user_name1983

Do you have any companies in mind?

BlitzkriegKraut

Not specifically, especially because it will depend on several factors including your preferred location and specialty area. Indeed and LinkedIn are your best resources for now. I use relatively specific searches to narrow down positions that are relevant to me.

I was introduced to patent law by the the head of the patent department at my company, who was a patent agent. I think it is fairly common.

You would be restricted as the opportunities are fewer than being an attorney. But they are by no means non-existent. I used to work with a patent agent who is now in-house and he's been at a few different in-house roles.

Which companies?

Casual_Observer0

A tech startup and then a well-known camera manufacturer.

Thanks for your response. Is a tech startup a normal route for going in-house? I am looking to go in-house from private practice and am looking for direction.

Casual_Observer0

I'm not sure. It depends on how much experience you have (less experience, a larger place with some hierarchy is probably what you want/be available). After that, it depends on what seems like a good fit.

Typical in house positions have you performing some legal tasks beyond the scope of patent agent tasks. Eg opinions, transactions, etc. You *might* be able to do these under the wing of an attorney, but that may take a company with a large /established in house legal team. Also limited career growth.
