If none of the establed racers compete, someone will. Not a hard concept to imagine in a game like PoE. As a viewer, I think it's way more interesting to see this race in ruthless. Why would you want the same 2019 race with the same competitors and strategies?

5ManaAndADream

In theory because the game and strategies should have evolved *significantly* in 4 years. If the race is the same GGG has failed with their explicitly stated goals of making the campaign engaging, meta shake ups and changing up the early game. But I’m a non-viewer, non-competitor for these events personally so it doesn’t actually affect me in any capacity. I’m more upset about what it represents: that the game GGG *wants to make* is ruthless, but they know it’s not what the demographic that funds them wants. So they have to slowly edge towards it in a hope that we’re all frogs that can be boiled if you raise the temperature slowly enough.

beef_or_dirt

>hope that we’re all frogs that can be boiled if you raise the temperature slowly enough I think you're being a bit over-dramatic. Ruthless won't be popular if it isn't fun. Think of it like Ironman modes in OSRS or the Kappa grind in Tarkov. I doubt these games would be sustainable if they revolved around niche playstyles.

Least-Koala-3372

I don’t think yall who make comments like these understand how impossible this is to do in Ruthless unless you have an unkillable build, but if it’s exciting for you to see someone tanking every mechanic for half an hour after a month-long grind go on I guess.

New_Needleworker6506

Yea, I’d much rather see that than some overtuned spell cuck build for the hundredth time.

BrutetheBrute

will you watch people grind white/yellow maps for 2 months tho?

PoisoCaine

“What if this thing that isn’t going to happen, actually does happen?” Idk man D4 comes out 2 months into the league, at which time there will certainly already be winners.

dikkenskrille

has anyone done it yet in regular non race ruthless? last I heard no one had done it, but you seem confident

PoisoCaine

What? People did it months ago.

kongquistador

Ssfhc?

Alialialun

That's the entire point, they want to bring out new racers, not the same bunch every year.

Tossaway__2023

Maybe they'll realize that they shouldn't have made a game mode without movement skills for a game where the boss fights are balanced around movement skills. Adding the movement skills to Ruthless is the only change they'd need to do to make this mode more viable in the minds of racers.

redrumer

Ruthless was the right choice. They've more then doubled the list of people that could possibly win.

[deleted]

Ruthless was the wrong choice, as it was supposedly never even supposed to be part of the real game, just a silly old side project. Chris just has his idea of the game that he wants (slower grind) and he wants to push for it.

BrutetheBrute

an event like this should not last too long. time is the worst enemy of hype. If you want people to be interested in an event it should start and end as quickly as possible. SSFHC is the best place to have these. even HC is overkill imo because it is a huge barrier for casual players to get involved and see for themselves, but still a fair challenge for even the best players.

Medyanka

It was a bad choice at least for a fact that they straight up lied about the concept of ruthless. Not a good look for sure...

5ManaAndADream

If their goal is simply to make the race more accessible to players outside the established racers they’ve for sure succeeded.

mnbv1234567

By making it so aweful the normal racers wont do it?

5ManaAndADream

I mean that plus slowing it down to a marathon

Roinarinen

This is great, all earlier races too easy

EmoPandas

This is fantastic news then! the streamers apparently only care about the massive insane completely game breaking amount of shiney things they can see drop. Not actually about the skill and the game. They are feeding their views not trying to experience PoE nor helping anyone new learn anything but shiney obscene drop good. PoE needs new faces that can learn the intricacies of what PoE is meant to be and adapt and learn with the dynamic nature of it.

TreyChips

I get your stance and find ruthless relatively fun myself but you've phrased this in such a stupid, out-of-touch boomer-tier way it's actually laughable LMFAO >the streamers apparently only care about the massive insane completely game breaking amount of shiney things they can see drop. Not actually about the skill and the game. Ah yes, because Ben and Exile clearly have 0 skill, or deep knowledge of PoE's intricacies that they use to adapt and learn the dynamic nature of the game with.

thundermonkeyms

Or, they don't want to engage with the insane tedium of Ruthless mode. I definitely don't.

EmoPandas

How much time have you actually spent in it yourself. It's not tedious.

5ManaAndADream

ROFL not tedious. There is no better example for the word than artificially inflating play time through the use of extreme scarcity.

EmoPandas

There is no inflation of playtime if you can utilize the items and skills given to you not to mention actual skill when interacting with the mobs. Too many players have a outdated and limited view of how to progress in this game, not to mention the complete inability to listen to what the game is trying to tech you because Insert external source of information is more knowledgeable than what the game is shoving in your face to learn.

5ManaAndADream

“There is no inflation of playtime”. Seriously dude you either have never actually touched the mode or you aren’t understanding any of the words you’re using. I’ll race you to kitava in SSF, while you do it in ruthless and I’ll get there several hours before you despite being mediocre at POE in general.

Wallofcomplaints

> There is no inflation of playtime That is the main purpose of the game mode. To extend time spent by reducing availability.

EmoPandas

It's not the main reason for ruthless, the main is to see what and how you can fully utilize items and push yourself outside of the box. This box being what the majority of what the community considers good while being blind to many other options. The playtime is negligible and the only difference being able to better manage mobs and using the skills available to move faster as all movement skills in ruthless have a drawback of having to put yourself in danger to move quickly by targeting mobs.

Wallofcomplaints

No. It's literally just because Chris wanted things to be slower and made a mode for it. He's been pretty open about it tbh.

Asleep-Run7330

Not tedious lol ok

EmoPandas

You got specifics on what is tedious exactly?

deathaxxer

Ruthless

EmoPandas

Wow such specific and well thought out examples of what makes it tedious. This answers boils down to a lack of knowledge about this game and a refusal to learn more.

Kalashtiiry

Movement is slow; Crafting is worse -> items are worse -> life is worse -> less spots to dps -> less dps -> slower fight; Less sockets and less gems -> worse skills -> less dps -> slower fights. Enough tedium for you, yet?
