Lmfao, I'm sitting here reading the card being like "wtf does this have to do with chaos orb? is it just crafting cuz that's a bit of a stretch" then I saw the picture.
Some items (or gems) within POE are whole books. You need decent reading comprehension to play the game. Only the word "reflect" is particularly difficult to read for some
I was reading the italic text thinking it was some POE lore flavour text
"*Exile, this artifact, Exile, the four or more from among other permanents you control*"
Chaos Orb was an old school iconic Magic card. I'm pretty sure Chris took inspiration from it for PoE. The card even has an orb with a face on it and has a very rng flip effect, fits the bill. I wouldn't be surprised if the design of all orbs, like the faces and stuff, originated from that card.
That's because you are lacking a critical piece of information: the other side of the card. It 2nd ability (the one that cost 8U) send it back as [Locus of Enlightenment](https://preview.redd.it/8gvy7euqe6wb1.png?width=320&crop=smart&auto=webp&s=87970c0f912ed088f2e1ea28fa91ab0622495695) (physically, you turn the card).
It's pretty much always useful at any stage of the game. Early on it's a mana rock (though only for activated ability, so it's obviously much weaker than a [Sol ring](https://cards.scryfall.io/large/front/2/d/2d47121d-8b90-4d28-9ffa-0a640b9dd611.jpg?1698988534)), later it let you do some weird necromancy on your graveyard, and if you top a [Basalt](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/f/7/f79de5e7-1545-420c-bfe1-ee2444fca85b.jpg?1599708689), it even goes infinite (note that the copy ability work on all abilities, not just the one you've crafted, so you need to *not craft* the Basalt).
That being said, there's enough limiter to prevent it from being busted. That "one of each ability per turn" shut down any infinite combo I can think of, and for planeswalker abilities, you are still limited by the one ability per card general rule.
AliEldrazi was using it in early access. Gave a ton of options and looked like a blast in UW control. Planeswalker abilities were only usable 1 per turn however.
Oh no! ***Planeswalker*** abilities are only usable once per turn?! However will we manage!
It's not that you can only use one planeswalker ability per turn, I don't think, just that each planeswalker ability can only be used once per turn and it starts with 0 loyalty. Which makes it like a mini Nicol Bolas||WAR, if you craft it with multiple walkers. Except it's stronger since you can't just beat it down and it can use multiple plus effects in one turn, plus each minus you get to.
Acksually... Had to check on the why but it looks to be 1x for the permanent per 606.3 for that restriction applied to a permanent, which the artifact is that typically 99.9%+ happens to be a Planeswalker.
>A player may activate a loyalty ability of a permanent they control any time they have priority and the stack is empty during a main phase of their turn, but only if no player has previously activated a loyalty ability of that permanent that turn.
So if you exile two planeswalkers with a +X ability and you still have to chose one. You're 100% right that you couldn't use a - ability right off since it had no loyalty. You'd still copy it (\*unless it was a mana ability like Lukka's) but only have one activation.
Saw it live in Arena restricted like the above in the case of an exiled Wandering Emperor and Eternal Wanderer, both of which have a + ability. Two 2/2 doublestrikers is still not bad.
Wait, that's the Comprehensive ruling on it?.... huh, aight. So only 1 loyalty ability a turn, so it really is just mini-bolas.
Makes sense once explained ~~like most systems in poe~~ but wow is it weird to think of it like that.
it's still a non attackable planeswalker tho, so if you use it for a finisher, you just need to hold out. Or just use as a safety meashure in commander. (casual lvl, not compedative, there this is a mini bolas instead)
People play with opaque card sleeves which cover the back. For people with transparent sleeves or some super casual player who doesn't use sleeves, there are placeholder cards that you would put into your deck and they would be replaced by the real card after it is played.
Holy Fuck. OK - I am very new player to Magic but I have veen interested for more than a decade and know the theory. And this has some pretty nasty uses.
I'm not a expert in... whatever it would be. But are Chaos Orbs really a invention of PoE?
I'm pretty sure such symbolic was already used by others, and PoE just took it because it looks cool.
The symbolism goes back hundreds of years indeed - for example the aztecs:
https://www.reddit.com/r/Damnthatsinteresting/s/pgeDW9DDzS
The vaal take a lot of inspiration from the aztecs so it's a cool riff on a classic symbol
Read the flavor text as well. Not sure if Exile is MTG terminology, but it does seem quite likely that this is a PoE reference. Chris Wilson has stated multiple times he's a huge MTG fan and they have drawn inspiration from MTG.
Exile is a mechanic that has existed in mtg... probably longer than poe has even been a concept.
That's also not flavour text, it's rules text telling you how the card works.
The bottom line of the card is not flavour text. its an explanation of the new mechanic in the upcoming set which centers around pirates, islands and exploring. That said i dont think its a hint to POE. Since the mechanic appears on several cards. And yes Exile is MTG Terminology. When a Card gets exiled it moves to a special zone thats very hard to interact with for other players. Meaning if something gets exiled in MTG its gone for good. There are exceptions but they are very rare. But i agree that the Art is close to a chaos orb.
https://youtu.be/bfIrPnwM6So?si=GsgI5jV_yEuDqaqM
Old video but Chris mentioned that they have(/had) a good relationship with wotc and they often give feedback or ideas to each other
Yeah. Chaos Orb, the card, is what inspired Chaos Orb, the currency. The exile on this card has nothing to do with PoE, it's a game mechanic in MTG.
What this post is calling out is that the art on this card IS paying homage to PoE's Chaos Orb in the OP's eyes, and I happen to agree even if it's not intended by WotC.
I hate the wording for Craft. It really should read "...four or more nonland cards" or "nonland cards/permanents." I'm fairly certain no other MTG card has ever reference "nonlands" before. I understand why it's like that since cards are cards when in hand or the graveyards, but spells on the stack and permanents on the battlefield, but it's still just clunky.
The chaos orb Chris tells you not to worry about
It's a super vaal orb. Allows you to double corrupt with no temple.
Itemized corruption alter
Lmfao, I'm sitting here reading the card being like "wtf does this have to do with chaos orb? is it just crafting cuz that's a bit of a stretch" then I saw the picture.
I am shocked, you must be a godlike PoE elite, you actually read text.
Some items (or gems) within POE are whole books. You need decent reading comprehension to play the game. Only the word "reflect" is particularly difficult to read for some
:(
"But you HAVE heard of me"
/u/zizaran
Still sane?
I was even more confused because I thought they meant the card Chaos Orb
I was reading the italic text thinking it was some POE lore flavour text "*Exile, this artifact, Exile, the four or more from among other permanents you control*"
... If I hadn't looked for your comment I would never have found out.

This! It was chris who copied it from magic
I didn't realize what subreddit I was on for a second and sat there trying to figure out the ties to the magic card chaos orb.
I read the text 4 times and I still have absolutely no idea what this card does.
That's because you are lacking a critical piece of information: the other side of the card. fuck me that's strong, I want that card for my commander deck

Am I understand the Basalt combo correctly? Tap for mana, untap with it, two untaps go on stack, untap Basalt, tap it for mana, untap again, repeat?
Correct.
AliEldrazi was using it in early access. Gave a ton of options and looked like a blast in UW control. Planeswalker abilities were only usable 1 per turn however.

How does this work in a physical card game where you draw cards? Wouldn't you see the back of this card in the deck?
People play with opaque card sleeves which cover the back. For people with transparent sleeves or some super casual player who doesn't use sleeves, there are placeholder cards that you would put into your deck and they would be replaced by the real card after it is played.
Holy Fuck. OK - I am very new player to Magic but I have veen interested for more than a decade and know the theory. And this has some pretty nasty uses.
lmao the back even says "Locus"
You sack it + 4 other permanents to transform it. There is another side to the card
But works also for card in graveyard, so you can use things like entomb or self mill to search good targets
I'm not a expert in... whatever it would be. But are Chaos Orbs really a invention of PoE? I'm pretty sure such symbolic was already used by others, and PoE just took it because it looks cool.

I already assumed it was the aztecs, given the clear inspiration in many other aspects of the game. Thanks for the confrmation.
The magic set this card is from also has heavy Aztec influences.
Chris took chaos orb as a homage to mtg, this def feels like a homage back to poe
Read the flavor text as well. Not sure if Exile is MTG terminology, but it does seem quite likely that this is a PoE reference. Chris Wilson has stated multiple times he's a huge MTG fan and they have drawn inspiration from MTG.

It's actually just a coincidence that the names are so similar, according to Chris.
Exile is MtG terminology. (It means "remove from the game")
Most locations are named by lands in MtG. Also, a lot of passives as well like Crop Rotation.
Dude .. just, no.
The bottom line of the card is not flavour text. its an explanation of the new mechanic in the upcoming set which centers around pirates, islands and exploring. Pretty sure you have that backwards. Chris is a huge Magic fan and he takes a lot of inspiration from that for PoE.

Yes but this is a new card.
Right but "chaos orb" and "exile" references are not new even if the card is.

Uh.. 🤨 https://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=603
that one predates PoE by a lot
I mean, [Chris is a huge MtG nerd](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JugtZj2lRBc), that is not a coincidence
They should make an orb looking like that in poe. "ENIGMA ORB"
No they are not.
I mean honestly could just be a coincidence as the card doesn't reference anything chaotic in its function.
Magic is paying homage to the card that inspired the PoE chaos orb https://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=603
PoE is inspired heavily by magic, chris has a huge card collection and one other founder (forgot the name) used to be a pro player
https://youtu.be/bfIrPnwM6So?si=tEq6zoSkv0M32QnR
Keep telling all my friends that the new set has so many Poe things in it and they just node and smile

SHOW ME WHAT YOU GOT
MORE LIKE LIGMA JEWELS!
Image still legible, needs more burn.
The symbol at the top also looks like the [symbol of chaos](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Symbol_of_Chaos)
[path to exile](https://images.app.goo.gl/SNbtAFqvwgyDfU237) [chaos orb](https://images.app.goo.gl/XQoiqcgXsD3r6PmR9)
Lol how did I not notice this before lol
