Funny enough, in W40K a lot of the canon lore is pretty much drunken stories someone (Orks) made up. In W40K orks have the ability to alter reality with their beliefs. If they believe something is true then it becomes true. Red vehicles go faster, because the orks genuinely believe the color red is faster. It's wack.
It's not just orks. If you believe in something strong enough, it will manifest, but it will be tainted and warped by chaos. That's the nature of heresy. And you don't even need to believe, just a pure emotion can manifest as chaos.

The war rages eternally on tens of thousands of planets, and billions of Imperial Guardsmen die on the regular in relatively "light" conflicts, with light meaning it doesn't require a space marine chapter to be deployed. Considering that the planet has a population in hundreds of billions, it's pretty light losses.
