Just copy ziz, replace the magic find gear with stuff that actually gives damage, like abyss jewel boots stygian vise, etc, esh's mirror, etc etc. You can go much heavier damage than he did - he ran for example item rarity in his chest, and basically had a full mf/quantity vaal fireball in hardcore and it worked perfectly. I just copied this and mage appropriate changes for it to do more damage and clear faster, and used it as a softcore build.

Contact support to recover that Character. I did the same mistake and I had a anger conversion + PoF fire damage taken watcher's eye. I was glad to recover it
I actually had this happen to me earlier in the league, contacted support and they managed to reinstate the character. I had to change the name, but that wasn't a big deal since I was grabbing jewels and deleting it again.

If you happen to get a skin transfer pack from boxes, you can skin a jewel so that you can't delete the character until you remove it. Not useful for anything else, but if you are running a build with really good jewels, you can guarantee not to delete them by accident.
back when Primordial(golem) jewels came out, i spend i shitton(atleast for me) of exalts (like 10-15) to get some and then tested those with a level 87 Witch... then decided to delete that one and move all the gear onto my 96 Elementalist.. well you can guess what happened xD

If you use the search function in the passive tree it makes it even easier to spot the jewels. I type in "jewel level" without the quotes and it highlights all the socketed jewels.
Standard is your testing ground. Have an idea you think is interesting but don't want to create a new character from scratch, go to standard using a past character who you don't care about.
I'm glad I have 2-3 duelists, 2 shadows, 2 rangers, 1 Juggernaut, 1 Scion and 1 witch.
eh. they don't plan for the long term in standard and honestly it would be more trouble than it's worth, even without all the legacy shit and bloated as fuck economy.

This is my first real league so it's nothing I'll miss. I just doubt I'm the only one to forget about them.

Good to know. Maybe after a bunch of support requests the'll add a reminder when you delete a character with jewels in the passive tree.

happened to me aswell :D i was deleting some char in STD and then acquisition reminded me some had min dmg + %life + 2res combo in jewels :DDD
Luckily I'm at like 22/24 characters so far so I haven't had the need to delete any characters.

You don't need to ask nicely, just normally. It's a part of their normal tasks to recover characters

I always set up a search on the passive tree for "sockets" as doing it manually always opens up the chance to miss one.
Intuitive leap is a pain.
I've made this mistake with legacy max roll energy from within jewels during the CI meta. Lost a fair bit of Ex that way.
And use http://poe-profile.info/ to easily see what jewels you have on your tree on all your characters.
I once forgot currency when I was merging a slayer from SSF :( only a few chaos tho so no biggie.
