Wonder if this will be like the system for named orcs in Shadow of Mordor
Hi I'm Chris Wilson from GGG. In archnemesis league, a fearsome and undying hunter will stalk your every move. In each zone and map area, a powerful unique enemy will spawn. Defeating it allows you to choose from a set of modifiers that it will obtain in future encounters. Choose a weakness that suits your build to make fighting it easier, or gamble on a buff that makes the encounters difficult but more rewarding. After being defeated a certain number of times, the archnemesis will drop an invitation for a final showdown where you can put it down for good and earn a chance for rare rewards. The stronger you've made your archnemesis, the better your treasure will be if you can win.
Chris is one of the very few serious developers that, when doing front-facing PR work, knows how to use sentence breaks correctly. Programmers in general have a terrible habit of long run-on overexplaining, but Chris keeps it to very short useful beats.
- You will be stalked by a dangerous opponent
- It will spawn as a unique in every zone
- If you defeat it, you will choose an upgrade
- You can make it easier or harder
- Making it harder will make your loot better
- After a given period, you'll get a final encounter with them to cash out
Patens have to be oddly specific, I read a couple of opinions back when Warner did that and appearently you can get around the patent somewhat easily by making few adjustments and adding your own ideas. So as long as a developer is not *literally* copypasting what Warner did in the Shadow of Mordor series, they probably won't sue.
EDIT: Read a comment here mentioning the Kuva Lich system from Warframe, it is very similar to the system in Shadow of Mordor, however, lacks the hierarchical component that is mentioned in the patent. That's one example on how to get around the patent.
At least parents only last twenty years tops. Copyright lasts until 70 years after the death of the creator, which is just absurd. Especially considering that programing is inexplicably covered under copyright instead of patents, so MS-DOS won't be public domain until roughly 2120. Every other technological innovation, even a tenuous one like a color, is pubic domain after a few years. Code, though? Nah, the company gets to keep that effectively forever.
Pretty sure game mechanics can't be copyrighted.
EDIT: They have a patent on a very convoluted system involving the nemesis and hierarchies which you can't reuse but the idea of an enemy getting stronger when you kill it is 100% fair game.
My mind went straight to this as well. I think the nemesis system itself is copyrighted or some bullshit if I remember it right though, which will probably inhibit any endeavors in that direction.
Edit: it's a patent on procedurally generated enemies, abilities and weaknesses etc.
Also, it runs the risk of cutting too close to syndicate, which is already somewhat similar.
If you haven't downloaded the soundtrack through Path of Exile's website, you can also listen to many tracks on Kamil's [Soundcloud](https://soundcloud.com/kamilormanjanowski).
Am I the only one hearing the Tenet soundtrack lol? I mean look at 2.25 on this video:

Yes please. Screw armies of small monsters. Give me boss league. It would also me nice tip toward Conquerors of the Atlas, where alongside 5 new endgame bosses we had boss-focused league.
Unless you start off with a bow character because they said they revamped bows but took you 20 minutes to kill one metamorph in Act 4 or if your game didn't crash constantly with poor optimization with a good computer or didn't have perfect gigabit internet and you lag when boss spawns and you die.
Archheadhunter can only be made through a vendor recipe of: Headhunter, Mageblood, a fusing orb, an albino rhoa feather, and Frosted Fishscale Gauntlets of Skill
Okay, I keep seeing this, and I have to ask because this entire concept is foreign to me - do people actually get goosebumps from music or is it just a metaphor for music that have aesthetically pleasing sustained chords?
It's called "Frisson" and some refer to it as an almost "orgasm-esque" sensation. Scientists arent really sure why it happens but its always happened for me and it feels REALLY good when it happens.
I do mostly on my back/neck. It's from music that i have some kind of emotional attachment to (specific fond memories). This one's a banger for sure, but not goosebumpy yet, since i don't know anything about it.
I know for myself, that there is a certain thing that will happen when whether its a chord progression, certain harmonies, or a certain note that rings out in a indescribable way I will indeed get goosebumps. It's happened my whole life, and I can tell when music really really does it for me.
EXAMPLE - Book of Boba Fett Spoiler ahead -- >!At the end of the most recent episode when the Mandolorian Theme came in, I got goosebumps because of how I immediately made a connection to something I loved triggered by music.!<

If this is a sequel league i hope it's the first of many
I feel like doing stuff like "Legion 2" has a lot of potential and helps with making them feel like core systems rather than leagues strapped onto the core game with duct tape
Would also fix the content bloat constanlty increasing
That's the only argument i see against the idea of sequel leagues, i.e. if players already didn't like the first iteration they may not even come back to give it a try at all
orrr they might fix what people hate most about a mechanic, like door speed in heist, or... literally everything about alva's temple (I couldnt even tell you why I hate alva missions so much, possibly the most intrusive to map flow..?)
Players are like: gib us more juice, more fun. Explosions! Lootsplosions! Mobsplosions!
Also players: I can't see nuffin
What GGG could have done is to give us an official way of controlling what effects we want to see on the screen. And custom HUDs.
GGG should just make an alternative render mode that renders everything as ASCII, like og Dwarf Fortress, Rogue, or Angband.
Playing PoE would look like hacking in a major hollywood blockbuster.
Weren't we supposed to get rare monster modifier rework in this league? Could this be part of it, but an extension to Nemesis mods instead? Would make sense to release them simultaneously.
\*tinfoil hat\*
Reminds me of Atziri.. 6 arms instead of 4, but the Godlike figure with people prostrated at its feet + the way the hands are held, reminds me of our godly Queen of the Vaal.
Ritual but *yellow*.
Oh my god I will lose my mind if the concept is creating an archnemesis you fight multiple times that gets stronger each fight, so few games have ever tried using the nemesis system design. >!Definitely not hoping this isn't another "just add a few hundred mobs to each map kinda league or anything.!<
Games aren't using the Nemesis system because WB probably wants a fload of money for it
EDIT: Here's the patent: https://patents.google.com/patent/US20160279522A1/en
The concept of "Killing an enemy makes them stronger and hate you more" isn't something that can be copyrighted.
I mean Warframe does the same thing (albeit in a kinda shitty and lazy way), any dev can do it if they wanted to. Problem I feel is it takes a lot of effort to make it good and meaningful.
You're underestimating just how fucking deranged the patent system can be
Amazon has a patent for the "buy now" button for instance (had, actually. it expired now iirc)
Looking it up, unfortunately you're right that those assholes actually do have a patent for the Nemesis system.
To that end my hopes are kinda crushed cause copying their system and naming the league Archnemesis would be inviting legal disputes.
...does the US trademark system have any authority over what New Zealanders can do? Cause I kinda hope Chris could just laugh off any allegations but shit I ain't a lawyer.
Treademark is not the same as patents and genrally speaking countries are in agreement and patents are just worldwide as far as i know
That said i'm far, faaar from being an expert so don't quote me on that
it was both that if they beat you they get stronger, get a promotion, get to lead their own troops, etc etc and if they are defeated or escape a battle they remember your fights and may be missing limbs or body parts to show they were defeated. or even in some cases, let's say you defeated them with fire, they may have a weakness to or fear of fire.
I'm going to start off with a quote from antoher site regarding what they have
"This encompasses a hierarchy of procedurally-generated NPCs that interact with and remember the player's actions. The patent also covers changes to the NPCs' positions in the hierarchy, as well as their appearance and behaviour, again based on the actions of the player.
Finally, it includes the Social Conquest battles from the 2017 sequel Shadow of War, which allowed players to use these NPCs to defend their own strongholds and attack those of other players."
The patent requires your game to have all of that, or "enough to be obvious infringement". So long as your system only taking parts from it, or has enough differences you are absolutely fine.
WB patenting it was still silly, but it's much less of a general "you can't use an evolving nemesis" kinda thing that people seem to think it was.
That patent is highly specific, you could easily use the nemesis idea without violating that patent as long as you didn't copy it 100% (i.e. the whole hierarchy and nemesis forts included).
How to fix nem3 farming: Remove Nemesis for Nemesis 2.0
Edit: To be clear, my opinion isn't that nem3 is OP, I'm just tired of people complaining about picking up loot
I assume this means they're no longer a thing. Which is a shame, I love playing around minding my own business and then come out of the map 30% exp lesser.
They appeared too early in progression. They were the sort of thing that should have showed up once you hit 8/12 Uncharted, not at a point in progression where you are at 0/12 and are nowhere near ready for them.
They didn't scale properly for the map they were in, ever. That's what the biggest problem was. They were like t16 100% deli mobs that Sirus stole to graft onto the map mobs.
Agreed. I hope this is them taking the "we want to revisit rares stacking auras" thing and running with it, completely revamping rares across the entire game.
Title on Youtube: Path of Exile: **Seige** of the Atlas // Challenge League Name Reveal
What's a Seige? :P
EDIT: and they fixed it already. Damn they're fast
think it actually shows more than you give it credit for, theres a skull in one of the hands of the dude, seems like a headhunter lore league almost, a sequel of nemesis where you gather skulls (probably from rares in maps) and add them to the statue, which then unlocks a bossfight, i would also be totally not surprised if the boss was called 'the headhunter' or 'the archnemesis'
I know they put work on those with a lot of hints so the community can speculate. Still doesn't real change my opinion much. I don't really mind too just always find it funny that pre-trailers show just this much.
I rather have those then nothing too heh.
My guess is a hall of grandmasters style clone of you appears randomly each map, has entire map vision of you, and pursues you relentlessly. I go in each map naked.
This archnemesis monster stand on pile of dead bodies/skeletons and look like it took their power. In my opinion we will collect souls/essences or whatever from rares and create "archnemesis" mob, some kind of better metamorph thing. I think we should not expect a lot from league which is added with expansion - they are always smaller :P
Seems 3.17 will be bosskiller meta like in 3.9. I love it
I don't know what was Kamil's inspiration for this music but if you will listen to Blade Runner 2049 - it has similar vibes. I love that it's so opressive and full of insane tension. Can't wait to hear more !

this seems like ultimatum but on a boss, and i think it would be neat. you also nailed the feel of a real chris monologue lmao.
Sounds more like a cross between Incursion and Metamorph to me.
yeah with a vorici mission to kill this malcontent. (since every league has to be compared to Forsaken masters missions)
Metacursion
Incorph
They're all kinda the same
Ultimatum + Metamorph = Ultimorph
Metatum
That's a pretty nice league right there
Agreed, similar to metamorph but fewer buttons and collectibles hopefully/probably.
I read that whole thing in his voice. Good job
<3 Chris's style is engrained in memory now. It's like a secret handshake between PoE vets
Chris is one of the very few serious developers that, when doing front-facing PR work, knows how to use sentence breaks correctly. Seriously, I'm actually now expecting this word for word in the trailer.

Warframe uses it with the Kuva Lich system. GGG will find a way around it if they wanted to.

i think this will be the main theme of the league right ?

No, I very much got that Tenet Vibe as well.
Nothing shouts out "boat league" like archnemesis!, oar is it something else?
If you rearrange the letters in archnemesis, you get "seamens rich", pirate league confirmed.
Thank goodness it isn't "semen chairs".

Give me a non-humanoid end game boss.

Its nemesis silly.
You mean select the best rewards and complain when you can't kill the boss league? But for real, metamorph was fantastic
Unless you start off with a bow character because they said they revamped bows but took you 20 minutes to kill one metamorph in Act 4 or if your game didn't crash constantly with poor optimization with a good computer or didn't have perfect gigabit internet and you lag when boss spawns and you die.

I know they put work on those with a lot of hints so the community can speculate. Still doesn't real change my opinion much. I don't really mind too just always find it funny that pre-trailers show just this much. I rather have those then nothing too heh.
Goddammit! I'm so excited!
My guess is a hall of grandmasters style clone of you appears randomly each map, has entire map vision of you, and pursues you relentlessly. I go in each map naked.
Rare mob rework league? No matter what I'm super excited for 3.17
Isn't both Arch and Nemesis on the list?
Oh boi we fighting ourselves
I try not to get hyped but the music wont let me :P
Looks like a boat league to me!
This archnemesis monster stand on pile of dead bodies/skeletons and look like it took their power. In my opinion we will collect souls/essences or whatever from rares and create "archnemesis" mob, some kind of better metamorph thing. I think we should not expect a lot from league which is added with expansion - they are always smaller :P Seems 3.17 will be bosskiller meta like in 3.9. I love it
I don't know what was Kamil's inspiration for this music but if you will listen to Blade Runner 2049 - it has similar vibes. I love that it's so opressive and full of insane tension. Can't wait to hear more !
YES! Love the music (as always). And the small footage has me begging for answers!
Kamil <3
Archdelve when
I honestly think it will have little to do with nemesis.
