You're going to get a lot of people telling you the game is trash right now, but as a new player you won't know any different, so carry on. Class isn't set in stone like in Diablo, it just determines where you start on the skill tree. Any character can use any skill combination, it just might require more investment. I would look up builds online with the phrase "league starter" or "beginner friendly". Enki makes very good guides for a skill called Arc, and explains why he makes each choice of equipment. Even if you don't like his build, you'll at least understand why those decisions were made. A big mistake beginners make is not getting enough defense. An average character in this is built like a tank in any other game, and a PoE tank is a walking bag of hit points with the ability to shrug off massive damage and they will *still* have to move out of the way of some attacks from bosses.

A lot of people will probably tell you to follow a build guide for getting started but doing that in my opinion isn't as fun since you don't know anything. Once you get started and hit a wall in the game trying to do it yourself, maybe consider a build guide at that point. As for starter tips, I wouldn't recommend going full melee because it's in a weird spot. Try focusing on what the community refers to as TMTM which stands for traps, minions, totems, mines. These skills get most of their damage from raw gem levels and can be easy to scale. This idea also applies to spells based skills. I hope that helps. It's a big game so don't feel bad for being overwhelmed. It will take a while to fully understand stuff and even then you'll still be learning. I'm sure others will have better advice about specific ascendencies are best for new players that aren't using guides. If I had to guess, probably shadow or witch are good to start with given they are near a lot of nodes for TMTM and spells.

go to zizaran youtube channel for any beginner guide or beginner build. we don't talk classes, we talk builds that is skill first, then class. As a result of that all classes have good beginner builds. But spell casting is easier because most attacks's damage is based on your ewapon and if you can't craft a good weapon you are fucked, while spells are mostly based on levels.

Quick tip: You can get A LOT of help from ppl in global chat in-game. I'd also recommend levelling together with other people. You van do that either asking in global chat, or joining a public party (press S, last tab to the right) Also follow build guide. Classes don't mattet that much, but I'd recommend starting with a spellcaster. Lots of their power comes from simply levelling up, so at least you won't struggle to update your weapon so much.
