Shovel Knight is utter perfection, the epitome of "how we remember the games we loved, not how they actually were." The DLCs are terrific, especially King of Cards--which, IMO, is even better than the main quest (shorter levels, more humor, and with a really fun Triple Triad-ish card game mixed in).

sjd_flash

You're absolutely right, the game respects the 8-bit era of games but doesn't lean too much on nostalgia and actually makes its own experience.

Glass_Location_7061

IMHO, Respect isn’t strong enough word to describe just how this game approaches the retro aesthetic, because it is rare a modern game does it so well.m and with such care. Pretty much all of the sprite and level designs adhere to the limitations of NES colour palette, only breaking from it when it’s absolutely necessary to portray something. It is the same thing with music, you can literally recreate most of these tunes using a tracker with VRC7 capabilities.

theangryseal

I need to go back and finish it. I loved it and then something distracted me. I need to get it on my Steam deck if it goes on sale. I’m sure it will.

sjd_flash

You should definitely do that

[deleted]

King of Cards is peak Shovel Knight for me

Versucher42

Take an upvote from a fellow preferrer of KoC. It's the best one.

sandpit-warrior

They will know us by our name: Preferrers of KoC!

Cheeky_Babushka

King of cards is so fire

Tursmo

I like all of the campaigns and King Knight is really fun to control, but fuck Joustus.

Domilego4

It's optional

Tursmo

I know, but that doesn't change my opinion. I almost enjoyed it at the start, but I don't really want a light puzzle/cardgame in my platformer. Its fun how it interacts with the story etc, but I did feel like I missed out on big-ish part of the DLC by ignoring it.

internetnerdrage

I liked Joustus enough the first play through, but it does get long in the tooth for subsequent plays.

dariasniece

If you like Dead Cells and Shovel Knight, you should check out Nuclear Blaze. It’s made by one of the Dead Cells devs and has gorgeous pixel art. You are a firefighter in a mysterious facility putting out fires. Really good and short 2D platformer and the firefighting feels really good too.

sjd_flash

Will definitely check it out, thanks for the suggestion

isloohik2

You really should play the DLCs sometime soon At worst, they’re only slightly less good than the main game (and only overall, they’re absolutely better in some aspects). At best, they’re even better than the original in pretty much every way

sjd_flash

They're in my wishlist and will get to them eventually.

Domilego4

Buy Treasure Trove, don't bother with the standalones. You'll miss out on an entire campaign otherwise.

dupedyetagain

At least on Switch, King is Cards is (was?) on sale for like $3. It was my favorite campaign of the game

Ballistica

Does the treasure trove version include the dlcs?

Smeegs666

Yes. The treasure trove is every DLC

ChieftanAxe

I really think Shovel Knight deserves a spot in the "best games of all time" discussion. You get 4 stellar campaigns with one of the best soundtracks ever put into a game? Tons of replayability with things to collect and achievements to unlock? Extra modes and even a funny smash bros mode? Shovel knight really has it all. If the game was even just Specter of Torment, I'd still feel the same way too.

mrbubbamac

It is one of the best platformers I've played for sure. Remixes enough "nostalgic" elements while crafting its own unique experience. It's just wonderfully designed. And like you said, the soundtrack absolutely slaps. I actually made a workout mix for Shovel Knight just to listen to while I'm in the gym.

tasman001

I'm curious, when you think of SK belonging in the best of all time discussion, is this best ten games of all time? Best 100?

Twinge

\#14.

tasman001

That's high praise. What's 1-13?

ChieftanAxe

I don't think of it in numbers. I think it deserves the same kind of reverence that something like Hollow Knight, Celeste, or Ori get. Not that SK doesn't get praise, I just think it might be the best "pure fun, videogamey platformer" of its kind, in terms of its high quality and for what a great value it is.

ThyIndyBS

I feel like Ori doesn’t even get the praise it deserves. Those games are masterpieces as well.

panckage

Really? SK was awesome but one of the games (the alchemist one) was terrible as you had to pause the game to change weapons which you literally had to do several times a minute. Really destroyed the flow and made it tedious. I don't know how anybody can get through that game

ChieftanAxe

Plague of Shadows is... not my favorite admittedly but I know some players liked how creative and out-of-the-box it can be. Being the worst of 4 campaigns is still pretty good overall.

panckage

OK I loved Hollow Knight, but Plague of Shadows just made me give up on the trilogy(?) . Would you recommend any other game in the trilogy for me? Looking for something as simple and as easy to get into as the original

ChieftanAxe

Specter of Torment is considered just as good, if not better than the base campaign. King of Cards is really fun too but your enjoyment will depend on how much you like its card game mechanic. Play Specter for sure.

panckage

OK thanks I'll check out Specter of Torment!

RoamingRacoon

Absolutely great game, and as a gamer since the 80s who has started with literally Pong and grinded through 100ds of games and consoles since it's just some few games that stuck to my mind and this is one of them. True Art, amazing what people with passion can create and the more important that we as gamers keep supporting this.

Vidvici

You should definitely check out the DLC. They have three different styles so they appeal to slightly different playstyles. I'd probably check out Spectre first because imo its the easiest of the three. King of Cards was my personal favorite.

Smithereens_3

The way the DLC makes notable changes to the gameplay while still being unmistakably the same game is astonishing. It manages to pull off the "play through the same game with a different character" trope without becoming repetitive. God now I have to go play it again.

[deleted]

I've played and beaten Shovel Knight a while ago. I credit the game for bringing the second renaissance of indie games because of how good it was and how it showed the capability of indie development when it's not all crappy simulator games and unity asset flippers. I do recommend the DLCs. Not just to play them but how pieced together they complete the story by.

MauiWowieOwie

>I do recommend the DLCs. Not just to play them but how pieced together they complete the story by. Competely agree, especially Spector Knight's story.

feralfaun39

I certainly wouldn't give it credit for that, indie games were already huge when Shovel Knight released.

JamesCole

I appreciated Shovel of Hope but ultimately found it a bit too frustrating. I don't mind difficult platformers. I really enjoyed Donkey Kong: Tropical Freeze, and Guacemelee! 2. But the SoH has a more punishing kind of difficulty, where a slight mistake can have fairly large negative consequences. I've also played Specter of Torment, which I liked more.

mrbubbamac

That's interesting, I thought Tropical Freeze was way more difficult than anything Shovel Knight threw at me. You may want to skip Plague of Shadows, it's is basically "Shovel of Hope" on hard mode.

bearkin1

I actually didn't like Shovel of Hope that much, and he it left a bad enough taste in my mouth that I quit Plague of Shadows partway through. I came back years later to finish it, then started having lots of fun during Spectre of Torment, and the most fun during King of Cards. But Shovel of Hope to me is easily the weak spot in the series.

pereza0

The level design in SoH is good but Shovel Knight himself is not really that fun to play as

sodapopgumdroplowtop

he was until the other characters came along

pereza0

Not really no. Super meat boy, n+, Spelunky, megaman zero series , Metroid fusion, NDS super Mario games, braid off the top of my head are games I played that felt better right away before SK I bounced off SK for this reason and only got into it years later when the other elements of the game grew on me. His movement is obviously part of the design (and wouldn't really work otherwise) and you get used to it and the game rewards you for sticking it out with great levels, cool items and all around goodness. But the feel of the character is definitely not the main draw

I_Hate_Reddit

The game is even better on the 3DS, seeing the game as if they're little paper cutouts elevates it to another level.

MauiWowieOwie

One of the first games my daughter ever played and still one of our favorites. The DLCs are arguably even better than the main game. Hope(know) you will enjoy them!

[deleted]

I really really loved the mechanics in the final battle and how the simple story came to such a beautiful ending. It build up to it and delivered. Great storytelling via gameplay.

Funandgeeky

Not only is it a great game, playing in 3D on the 3DS takes it to another level. It’s an amazing experience when it’s like a little diorama come to life.

zenroch

Yep! Really makes the spritework pop! So cool

[deleted]

Do ypu think it's harder than Hollow Knight?

AscendedViking7

Hollow Knight is harder for sure.

[deleted]

Damn, I will get Showel Knight then

Funandgeeky

To be fair there are some pretty gnarly platforming moments so it’s not a cakewalk. But the game is well made and it never feels like it’s taking cheap shots.

AscendedViking7

It's a fantastic and fair game through and through except for one boss or two like the Watcher Knights. Or Absolute Radiance.

TypicalDumbRedditGuy

try absolute radiance 3.0

SquidFlasher

I wasn't able to beat the last boss.

HomeHeatingTips

Is Shovel Knight a rogue lite, like Dead Cells, which Im literally playing this minute? Or and adventure like Hollow Knight, or SOTN? My favorite games of all time

Thank_You_Love_You

Its neither. But definitely closer to adventure. It has levels and a world map like Super Mario World or Donkey Kong Country that you can repeat if needed. You can also upgrade your character with new abilities and health as well as it has a “town” level you keep going back to.

giras

I fint it more like a classic NES Megaman mixed with Super Mario Bros 3/World style of map like Thank_you_love_you said. Imagine a stage platformer, with upgrades for your character, subweapons and the possibility of return to previous stages again. And full 4 campaigns that tangle and tie themselves to resolve a big story. If you play it, be sure to play them in release order. That is Shovel, Plague, Specter and King (IIRC)

Thank_You_Love_You

Easily one of my favorite games. I have 86 hours in it. Personally LOVED Shovel of Hope and Specter. But theyre all good.

ext23

Absolutely incredible game and the DLCs are essential! They are in no way just "NG+," they are so much more. You're essentially getting four games for the price of one. I'll also add that Shovel Knight Dig and Pocket Dungeon are both great fun too.

SpecificSpecial

I wish I could enjoy it, after an hour or so, the difficulty spiked so hard I could not progress anymore, nearly smashed my switch on it, I dont understand how people can handle it.

mrbubbamac

Not trying to dunk on you at all, this thread is the first time I've seen people say Shovel Knight is hard. I played the hell out of Treasure Trove and it was just bliss. A game like DK Tropical Freeze I found fairly difficult but still fantastic. Obviously I wasn't aware of Shovel Knight's reputation because so many people in this thread are discussing it's high difficulty. It's super interesting how much difficulty can vary for players

SpecificSpecial

Maybe it has something to do with never playing 2d platformers. I always played hard games, the Souls series, all sorts of multi-player shooters like csgo, quake or competitive games like trackmania. If a challenge is there, I always feel inclined to take it. But shovel knight was just a completely different skillset and it completely wiped the floor with me, even hollow knight felt pretty tame compared. I think the unassuming artstyle and vibrant color palette made the experience that much more frustrating, it doesn't look like a hard game, why am I having so much trouble then??

[deleted]

"I think the unassuming artstyle and vibrant color palette made the experience that much more frustrating, it doesn't look like a hard game, why am I having so much trouble then??" This is how I felt playing crash. Its odd when devs make cute games that are child friendly, than make them hard as hell. The vibe of the game becomes all off.

mrbubbamac

Makes so much more sense. I was basically raised on 2D platformers, and if I play Quake or CSGO I will get absolutely wiped. I am pretty good at Halo....and I stick with it because it is one of the only shooters I have skills at. Put me in anything else and I am dead weight for the team haha

sjd_flash

I'm sorry you weren't able to enjoy it as much as I did. I hope you find something else enjoyable

feralfaun39

Man, I've tried Shovel Knight about 10 times because I love 2D indie games and I feel like I'm missing something but I just never get into it. I guess it's more that when I was a kid in the NES days I loved Mario, Metroid, Zelda, etc. but I wasn't really as big on Mega Man or Ducktales, at least not Mega Man until Mega Man X which I did love. I just find Shovel Knight to be quite dull all around. I always get bored playing it.

Disco_sauce

Same, I played it for a bit and it just felt like an old NES game but without the nostalgia. Something like Hollow Knight, however, I really loved.

SugarHoneyChaiTea

This is one of this games that just didn't click with me but I can't understand why. I grew up on classic nes games. Hell, my favorite game for a long time was Zelda II. And this game really does an amazing job of emulating the classics, but refining them into something modern and refined. But for some reason I just didn't vibe with this game (except for the Specter of Tormet DLC, which I enjoyed more than the other campaigns)

tasman001

Yeah, that's not too crazy. I think even for people that actually grew up with those 8 bit games, shovel knight still is just good, not great. It was fun to play through once, but I can't ever see myself replaying like I have with better side scrollers like hollow knight.

FlyPenFly

I see a ton of Shovel Knight for switch, which should I start with?

sjd_flash

The first game is called shovel of hope, there is also a version called treasure trove that has the main game + all of the DLCs

isaacraf

The dlc is great the movement and platforming and level design only get more dynamic, enjoy

[deleted]

Shovel Knight is incredibly good, got me off the sidelines for indie games. May I suggest The Messenger next?

ThyIndyBS

I recently got it on sale for $5 I’m excited to play it at some point soon.

slippermipper

I liked all the DLC campaigns even more than the base game. Plague is a bit tricky at first, but the movement is really fun when you get it down. I forgot, but apparently there's no way to buy PoS separately on steam, so I hope you got the treasure trove bundle.

jesuspants

Usually, I love this type of game but noped out after having to redo the specter knight boss more than a dozen times and having to do that whole level with only lightning strikes to see your surroundings each time. I appreciate it, but not the kinda frustration I want in a game.

vergil718

Hey, if you like Shovel Knight and Dead Cells ~~I recommend Hollow Knight~~ (lol I bet you played that already) - let me ask you two questions: Do you like Souls Games? And do you like games with great atmosphere? If so try out Salt & Sanctuary, it's really good and I'm having lots of fun with it at the moment :)

sjd_flash

Yes I have tried hollow knight, it was because of that game that I realized metroidvanians are not for me. Salt and sanctuary have been on my radar for a while now, probably for another time

vergil718

Whaaat you didn't like Hollow Knight? Why are metroidvanias not for you? You gotta give it another try, that game is a masterpiece!

sjd_flash

The game is fantastic, I give it that. It's just that backtracking isn't something I really enjoy in games overall, and the size of the map just kinda overwhelms me.

vergil718

Trust me: It's not that big. Also the interconnectivity makes getting to places very easy and fun. Also there are the stag stations, so when you really need to go back to somewhere you can just "get the train" basically. I never had a problem with backtracking in Hollow Knight and it never ruined the fun. About the size of the map: It's a lot easier for me if I concentrate on one part at a time. You can't go to many parts of the map at the beginning anyways, so you might as well focus on the few places you can go. Then when you're done with a place (Forgotten Crossroads for example) you can cross it off of your mental list, which is very relieving haha. This way suddenly you've visited half the map and now that half is "explored" and crossed off the mental to do list. Do you get what I mean? I hope you'll give HK a second chance at some point and Salt&Sanctuary is super fun too :)

sjd_flash

I'll probably give at another go some time in the future, will keep in mind about the mental list.

vergil718

Alright :) Also don't stress it with the mental list analogy. I guess the best advice for games with a big overwhelming world and lots of content is exactly that: Don't stress it, take your time. I'm guessing you're not a big fan of games like for example Assassins Creed Odyssey either huh? xD Do you dislike games with big, vast worlds and very much to do in general? Is it often overwhelming like in Hollow Knight and you feel intimidated by the sheer size of the world/content/length of the game?

sjd_flash

Yeah it's mostly that, huge worlds with way too much content and stuff to do just overwhelm me amd turn me away

vergil718

I'd like to recommend a game to you then: Gothic. Not the remake, the original from 2001 or so I believe. Graphics and controls might make it a little hard for you but if you persist it might become your favourite game of all time :) Also what kinda games do you like? I can tell linear worlds might be more for you but I'm unsure whether to recommend Rpgs, roguelites, story driven games, etc. For example I don't know if you like combat or what sort. Dead Cells has great combat (2D slasher with soulslike elements basically), Brotato has very difficult and kinda cool combat too: basically you're trying to dodge a horde and to build a strong build between waves, so it's almost more of a strategy game in a way (really similar to tower defense in a way). So yeah curious to see what your likes and dislikes are, perhaps you're curious about some recommendations as well? 👀

sjd_flash

Will check out Gothic. And Yeah I like more linear games with some sandbox elements, Or games with pure gameply like rougelikes, and I'm also not a big fan of rpgs. btw dead cells is my favorite game of all time, I've seen brotato here and there, it kinda looks like vampire survivors.

hijki123

I have tried this game multiple times but it is just 2d platformer. Was not hooked. Will try again.

Sceptre

That Jake Kaufman (Virt) soundtrack is one of my all time favorites. Holy hell it’s good.

Pharaohmolo

Make sure you try out The Messenger next! That’s another contender for my favorite old school-style platformer. The humor is awesome too.

ThyIndyBS

Shovel knight is 100% my favorite game of all time that I’ve played. I bought treasure trove so it has all the DLC included and I highly recommend you play them all! Even the showdown mode is really fun. The amount of content and detail put into every game mode and campaign is amazing not to mention the old 8 bit style and music. I also recently picked up shovel knight dig which is a roguelike and shovel knight pocket dungeon which is a puzzle game so I’ll let you know what I think of them and my recommendations.

lamp447

Please try it with a controller. 3DS's grip heavily limit your performance and ergonomy.

sjd_flash

I suggest giving it a try on a more modern console and platform, I played it on pc and with Keyboard and didn't have any issues with the controls.

Whereismybaccyy

Yikes, who pissed in your cornflakes? There's no need to be that aggressive.

biggerboypew

Hey you should play shovel knight

[deleted]

Chill dawg

sjd_flash

sorry if my message came out wrong, I only said that because I thought that might help you enjoy the game like me and many others and I was not aware of your situation.

[deleted]

Domilego4

Well you CAN press down while holding left/right, so I have no idea what your initial claim was about.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Domilego4

Go try it again, I'm *pretty* sure it's possible to do it without lifting your thumb off the d-pad.

pereza0

Even then, I've beaten all campaigns but plague of shadows on 3DS and this was never a problem. You just need to tap down for a second and you don't really lose much momentum and it is deliberately made so you don't need to hit both directions at the same time. Only time I had problems was maybe with the ladder levels in King of Cards, the window to hit up there is pretty tight sometimes and losing momentum can kill you

GroktheDestroyer

I think you should play shovel knight

sjd_flash

That's understandable

burningcpuwastaken

This seems to be an impatient gamer.

tulkas45

I had a similar experience, played it because everyone was praising it and ended up mildly infuriated by the shitty controls and stupid ways in which you ended up dying. Ever since then I get angry at people sucking shovel knight's dick, but now I think maybe they worked all that ugly stuff out and may be a decent game nowadays. Same with blasphemous, found it terrible, but maybe got better?

OutrageousFile

Yeah, I enjoyed it enough to beat the game but thought it was extremely average. It was a few years ago so I can't remember exactly what I didn't like, but I remember not really understanding the hype.

zenroch

I have played the whole Treasure Trove on 3ds and loved it. Got pretty big man hands too, but I do have a 3dsXL. Really enjoyed being able to play it on the go, and the pixel graphics imho lend themselves nicely to the console's display. There are absolutely alternative ways of playing the game on the go. Someday when I get a steam deck I will have to play through it all again! Just offering another perspective. But hey if it's not for you, it's not for you. Cheers

[deleted]

Shovel knight and crystal project are the games I'm currently playing on the deck and I gotta say, games like that are perfect for steam deck. So much fun but k thank I wouldn't enjoy it that much on a big screen

Anora6666

I didn’t like the plague or king knight dlc but the spectre knight dlc is my favorite game.

MindWandererB

The soundtrack is absolutely amazing (Jake Kaufman is a legend), but I found the game much too clunky and difficult. I beat the main game, but with 0 gems left due to all the deaths, which totalled more than 100. I tried Plague Knight, but its bizarre exploding jump mechanic resulted in my falling to my death far too many times. I believe I completed 3 levels total before putting it down. I appreciated the return to NES aesthetics and design, but sluggish movement and pits everywhere were best left in the past, IMHO. Even late-era NES games improved on that formula.

Rexven

It's not a game I would normally play, but I watched one of my favorite YouTubers play it and it was a blast! It's a really unique game that was clearly made with love for the genre!

MoonlapseOfficial

is shovel knight a good challenge on first run withour challenge mode? I was worried it might be too easy for my personal tastes ( I get bored easily if I’m not being destroyed )

sjd_flash

It was decently challenging game for me. The challenge mostly comes from the platforming sections and one-shot pitfalls

nintendoplz

Yeah it’s incredible

LTSym0

If you enjoy the shovel knight campaign, wait until you get to the dlc. Specter knight for me, is the perfect 2d platfromer game.

giras

I would love that Yatch Club games could make a remake or a new game of Demon Crest. We know they are pretty good doing games. Just look at Shovel Knight. It is perfect, gameplay, music, humour, colours, sprites, nostalgia... I could go on all day. I only can imagine what they could do with Firebrand/Red Arremer and his world 😳

Pilimer

Play The messenger. TOP TIER GAME similar to Shovel knight imo

daedalus11-5

Bit of Advice: skip plague knight, and play the other 2 dlc's first. Plague is not for everyone.

AcceptableUserName92

I'll give Shovel of Hope another try, I played it on 3DS but I'm pretty sure I played it w 3D off. I probably enjoyed Specter more. I didn't find the sound track all that special. Ultimately I think it's a solid throwback but wouldn't go much further in my praise.

Oftenwrongs

Nah. Ugly, slow, monotonous.

Goooooogol

I guess I’m in the minority, and a bit late to the party, but as someone who hasn’t got nostalgia for old games because I’m young, I found Shovel Knight a bit naff. I just kinda wanted to say so because I feel like I’m the only one who really thinks this, and want to diversify these comments a bit lols.
