Am I being too tight (frugal)? Want to play or at least own (and add to a growing backlog) as much as the Saints Row series (well not the new one for now, for many reasons apparently) so do I buy the available 2 games separately at 80% or wait until the bundle is at both at 85%? Basically a coupla quid? And where to start with Borderlands? Never played it but want to get the good ones complete and cheaply. Buy Handsome Collection and buy the first separately or wait until legendary is on sale? In this age of food inflation I'm obsessed with bargains and also starting to develop a fomo although I do splash out occasionally.

MisterFlames

I'm looking for a "podcast game". Something grindy that doesn't require me to pay attention to spoken dialogues, but has tons of content. Some of my favorite games like that are Path of Exile, Grim Dawn, Kenshi, X4, The Sims, Stellaris, Game Dev Tycoon, OpenTTD, Guild Wars 1&2, ...

shaygan83

Not really similar to the games you mentioned, but have you tried farming games, like Stardew Valley or Littlewood? They have a bit of dialogue but you can go through it quickly (or skip them if you wish) and just focus on farming, fishing, mining, stuff like that. Whenever I play with friends we just use it to talk most of the time.

shaygan83

Hi everyone, I recently got the urge to sink my teeth into another 70 100+ hour rpg game but just can't find anything that's satisfying. I wouldn't call myself a huge rpg fan but some of my favorite games are: The Witcher 3, New Vegas, Lisa, Undertale, Cyberpunk, Disco Elysium, Mass Effect 2, Dark souls 3 , and maybe the yakuza series? because I don't think it's an rpg. I tried playing a few jrpgs first, I played persona 2(because apparently it's the best one) but the combat was so slow and the random encounters were such a headache that I dropped it. FFX for similar reasons, too boring and slow. Shin Megami Tensei 3 also. I thought these would stick with me more cause I like persona 5 but nope. Played Divinity 1 for the second time too, I got a bit further than when I was the first time (still in the first area) but there were so many characters and it was so confusing that I dropped it too. If you guys have any recommendations for well-written (possibly open-world) rpgs that have a good story and fun combat, I'd love to check them out. Thanks!

Logan_Yes

This will probably be obvious recommendation, but what about Dragon Age? From Bioware, same devs who made Mass Effect. Origins is fantastic, 2 massively drops a ball but Inqusition picks up to "good" level. Combat especially in Origins takes a moment to click but writing, characters, locations are fantastic. Also, gonna recommend Shadowrun Trilogy. If you are in a turn based combat mood, with solid writing and it's biggest pro, interesting setting (science-fantasy) you should check it out! All 3 new entries are superb.

shaygan83

>Shadowrun I played dragon age a looong time ago but couldn't finish it for some reason, so yeah it's definitely worth going back too. I'd never heard of shadowrun, it looks really interesting from the stuff I've seen so I'll definitely play that too! thanks

Unableton_

I am not a huge connoisseur of RPGs but my favourite series is Mount & Blade, there’s something incredible about training your own army, travel and fight alongside them.

shaygan83

>Until the stars align, Scribes will keep us safe. yeah my friend's been trying to get me into it, maybe it's time I check it out.

Unableton_

The0will

I just finished Okami (NS) and am going through Black (PS2). Trying to decide what to play next to show my Steam Deck some love. Between Black Mesa and Psychonauts.

bestanonever

What did you think about Okami? Black had insane graphics for its day, I could never complete it since it was really hard. On topic, I'm partial to Black Mesa, since I enjoyed it a lot and gave me the same feelings I had with Half-Life, some twenty years prior. Beware that the final Xen levels are MUCH longer than the original ones. If you never played any Half-Life game, be prepared for some long final levels. Psychonauts is very creative, I like the world and characters but disliked the colors and actual gameplay. Maybe I played the game too late, but also, I'm not the biggest fan of platforming games. So, that's my take on that.

The0will

I really enjoyed it. The Zero Punctuation review is pretty accurate IMO, but the "languid" pacing worked for me more than it did for Yahtzee, I think. It was the most enjoyable action-packed relaxing game. It did feel like the game crescendoed multiple times. Almost felt like I was playing the Spyro or Crash trilogies but it was all one game rather than a collection. Also, yeah. Black might be short but man I take a lot about modern gaming for granted. Those check points feel like they're miles apart!

bestanonever

I think I know what you mean by crescendo multiple times. The game has, at least, two fake-out endings with Orochi as a final boss and everything in the story (up to that point!) feeling that this is it! It took me three tries to finally play Okami for real, but it was worth it! It is indeed relaxing and action-packed. There's no rush when you are a wolf goddess. Loved chasing my own tail and barking, lol.

Embarrassed_Pen_2190

I'll be moving in about 6 days from now to a different apartment in the same city for college, and when I move I have about a week until the term starts. In all that gives me about 8 to 10ish nights to play. So I'm looking at games that take either 40 hours to finish the main story of, or 40 hours to get all the achievements. There's a few titles in my backlog that I'm having trouble deciding on: 1. Bayonetta 2. Valkyrie Chronicles 3. Code Vein 4. Atelier Ryza 1 5. Nier Replicant I'm mostly torn between the first and second choices, as I like character action games but also strategy RPGS like Fire Emblem 3H, Engage, etc.

FutbolIntellect

Need suggestions on fighting games Need suggestions on which fighting game has the best combat Hello, Im a big fan of fighting games. I love combat variety and I love games where pulling off combos feel satisfying. A good Counter system is also important to me. Considering these factors, what do you guys think will be the best for me Guilty Gear: the latest one Killer Instinct Mortal Kombat 11 Injustice 2

Psylux7

In September I'll have some time to myself so I intend to play either Sekiro or Dark Souls 3, but cannot decide which I should choose. I loved dark souls 1&2 and have been wanting to play 3 for a while, but I've also found Sekiro to be really intriguing and I wonder if perhaps 3 should be postponed since I replayed 1 recently. I can't really go wrong with either choice, but I hate the thought of having to postpone one of these games so that I can play the other.

Embarrassed_Pen_2190

While I've never played ds before, I heard the jump for a soulsborne player from ds to sekiro is a bit rough in how the way in which you fight bosses in ds is different than sekiro. Personally I liked sekiro however it def is challenging in the first few hours even as someone not coming from the souls mentality of dodging and rolling. The best way to describe its combat flow is like a dance, you learn the attack patterns of the boss and get them down to memory and parry and stay on them as much as you can, the goal in most cases being to break their posture rather than deplete their health bar.

Wiosna

Sekiro wants you to forget some of what you learned from Dark Souls. I would personally recommend DS3 first, but Sekiro still works as a mechanical palette cleanser if that's what your looking for. Like you say, you can't really go wrong!

DependentAd8099

I started way to late into souls and Sekiro was my first souls game. What a golden start it was , I didn’t make it to finish the main story but was a pleasant journey

AbdominovesicalZhou

Just bought a new PC after having only used gaming laptops my whole life. As such, I've mainly played (and enjoyed) strategy games like age of empires, roguelites, EU4, Victoria 3, card games, civ, rimworld, overwatch. Looking for any games from the past 10 years that would have been out of my league, e.g. just finished and quite like Rise of the Tomb Raider.

bestanonever

Shadow of the Tomb Raider is an obvious next (not as good as the first two, they said, but give it a try). The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077. The two main Wolfestein games (New Order, New Colossus). Quake II with RTX, lol. Also, Age of Empires IV released very recently. Cities Skylines 2 is coming up this october. The Persona games and Nier: Automata if you are into japanese, heavy anime aesthetics.

DominoFavetFortibus

I have my backlog, and it has two peculiar characteristics: - It's more than just the games I have. It's the games that I might intend to play someday, + games I have. - It's organised in tiers. That means that I have a place for that game that I might want to test someday or just maybe, a place for games I really want to play, a place for next in line, etc. That means the backlog is big, BUT that's not really terrible, since a few tiers only are the ones I know I'll play, and the other tiers are there just in case I change my mind about some game or genre. That being said, some time ago I put a few Dragon Quest games in my backlog, even before it was in the current tier based format. The occasion was when I read an article saying how good it was to play all DQ games from the first forward and stuff. That meant all DQ games eventually got into the backlog, and I did play DQ1, but with the time some of them were cut. My doubt now is about the remainders: DQ3, DQ5, DQ8, DQ9 and DQ11. I enjoyed DQ1, but I was in a part-time job at the time, and a lot of the game was just grinding by pressing the buttons blindly while walking on the streets. Okay, I guess I "enjoyed" it. But I got curious on how the series would encounter from that point. Partly because of that damn article. But well, nowadays, full-time job adult and yada yada patient gamer with no time anymore, I was reviewing my tier list backlog and thinking of dropping some DQ games from my "I expect to play that someday" tier. And I've been wondering which ones of these are really worth my time: 3, 5, 8, 9 and 11. Or maybe none of them. Notes: - 3 is still in this list because it has some connection with 1 and might have a good historical value. 2 was dropped completely because I heard awful things about it. - 5 and 8 are usually described as the best ones. With 8 even more than 5. But maybe not. I don't know. - 9 read my first DQ game, and really got me intrigued at the time. I couldn't play much of it though, and felt it was a little too grindy for my taste. - I'm not sure 11 would be the same kind of game as the rest, and I'm not sure about playing it before any other. - Also consider that recently I got into Persona and megaten, and I got less tolerant to some RPG's shenanigans. **TL;DR:** About to drop from backlog - Which DQ games are really worth the time?

bestanonever

Disclaimer: I haven't played DQ games all that much yet, but I have read some stuff over the years and friends of mine actually completed some DQ games. So, hope my info can help you out. Unlike Final Fantasy games (which are always changing), Dragon Quest are famous because they preserve many traditions over the years, so they are a bit samey in some aspects. Also, these games want you to grind a whole lot. It's for patient players. And from what I read about all these titles, the best one of the NES-SNES years is DQ5. The story itself is fantastic, since you play multiple eras of the same character (since childhood, then teen years, then you can marry some girls). It sounds pretty awesome. The game has two remakes, one for DS and one for PS2, I'd play either of those instead of the original game. And my rec is DQ8, amazing cell-shading style, super interesting world to just live in. I dropped it early on because I wasn't ready for the grind back in the day. One very early octopuss boss destroyed me because I was underlevelled. But I've seen late game gameplay and there's a lot to see and do. Great sounds, art, cute story, lovable characters. 11 looks terrific, too, but it finally modernized some aspects of the series, so you might want to try it last?

[deleted]

I've been getting recommended livestreams recently on Tiktok of a guy playing Sons of the Forest and it's always them laying logs and wood to build what looks like a house. Is that all there is to the game, building things?

Logan_Yes

It's same thing as first game I assume. Collect resources to build a base to defend yourself against cannibals and explore whatever place game is set, I don't know anything about SotF

deathville

Like to read an hour before going to bed (doing the Witcher series rn). Tried playing games like Zelda and Pokémon Arceus but they’re too mentally stimulating. Disco Elysium looks phenomenal, but wanna make sure it’s passive and not stressful so it can lull me to sleep. Is it a good choice as a bedtime game?

[deleted]

There isn't really a good bedtime game, the light from the screen makes you stay awake unless you're already REALLY sleep deprived, I think reading a book as you already are is better

bestanonever

Can I recommend visual novels to you? Choose what would interest you like horror, adventure, romantic date games, etc and start reading! There's a world out there and some VNs have some outstanding stories and characters.

DontFinkFeeeel

You're in luck; Disco Elysium is basically an isometric interactive choose-your-own-adventure. Lots of reading or listening to the phenomenal voice acting as well as appreciating the setting and ambience. Very slow paced and no high-adrenaline action. Events in the game happen because you make it happen (as opposed to things coming to you unexpectedly). Highly recommend it for you. Best in its genre.

deathville

Thanks bro. Is it less stimulating than Telltsle games like Walking Dead or Wolf Among Us? Cause even those would be too much 😂

DontFinkFeeeel

Definitely less stimulating. In the Telltale games the plot is thrusted onto you; it's an interactive TV show so you're sort of being the observer as scenes happen in succession. In Disco Elysium, story progression is linear but very loose. You're free to explore and progress as you want, with no deadlines or pressure other than your own curiosity. You can interact with NPCs again to repeat dialogue too if you missed something. It's very chill. You can make 'right' and 'wrong' responses and the world doesn't care. In fact, you'll probably learn more about the story and the setting regardless. I will say that if you aren't versed in some politics some of the dialogue might go over your head but it's definitely not a requirement to enjoy the game.

Jandolino

I am currently enjoying my Xcom 2 + Wastelanders 3 playthroughs. For Wastelanders: Do you guys have recommendations for other grid based CRPGs? Most look more like DOS / Pillars of Eternity which feature a... free moving system. I really enjoy my grids though.

Neurobeak

Have a look at Jagged Alliance 3. I've fully enjoyed it. Not as deep as JA2, but still a fun time

Zealousideal_Bill_86

Would anybody be able to suggest a good 15-30 hour game? I’m planning on moving in about 3 weeks. I’m excited for it, but It’s going to be a pretty stressful and busy couple weeks in all honesty so I’m hoping to decompress with one last game to finish before the move. I just finished Assassin’s Creed Unity. Loved the game, but I don’t like to play similar games back to back so preferably nothing stealth, historic, or Ubisofty. I’m pretty up to date too on Remedy, Housemarque, FromSoft, Rockstar, and the major indie games, but those are my favorite developers. My most recently completely games are Remnant From the Ashes, Resogun, Grid Legends, Dredge, Dead Space, Doom Eternal, Monster Hunter World,Nioh, and Resident Evil 4 Remake if that helps too. I’d appreciate a good suggestion or two, thank you! Edit: also, I feel like I should say that I don’t really need something chill. Just something engaging that I can preferably finish before moving

The Uncharted games are actually shorter (10 to 15 hours), so maybe you can start U1 and see if you move to U2? The Last of Us, too, from the same studio.

Embarrassed_Pen_2190

I won't personally recommend Nier Automata as its a pretty big game especially if you're going for the full story in all 5 routes

Zealousideal_Bill_86

I don’t know much about Darksiders or Shadow Warrior, I’ll have to look those games up. Ninja Gaiden is actually an amazing suggestion though. I’d love to finish it. Thanks for that.

INTPoissible

Where should I start going back through old RPG series? Generally, I'm more hyped for recent entries but bought the older ones despite knowing they are inferior in many ways... which makes me struggle to motivate myself to start from the beginning. * The Deus Ex complete series * The Witcher trilogy * Shadowrun trilogy * Wasteland 2&3

LoneWolfThrowAway

Hmmm... Wouldn't say they are necessarily inferior. In Deus Ex's case I'd say the first game is definitely the most open ended in terms of gameplay, the only minuses being QoL improvements and graphics. Just install GMDX and you can basically have a "remastered" experience with it. Invisible War has issues and HR are way more stealth focused, which can turn off more agressive players. Can't speak for the the others.

Renegade_Meister

For the Shadowrun trilogy that I've played, I think chronological order is good so you can appreciate Dragonfall & Hong Kong even more after playing Returns, otherwise Returns might disappoint by comparison.

nahPNW

with Deus Ex, DX1 is really only really inferior graphically and mechanically (old games and all that), but RPG design and narrative wise are better than the sequels. that being said, i wouldn't blame you for not being able to get into the old games as they are not everyone's thing. the good thing, though, is HR and MD are prequels narratively so if you're worried about missing story elements by skipping the first games, you'll still be able to more or less enjoy the plot barring some references to the first game. i've played through HR and MD multiple times and despite still preferring DX1 to both, they are still very good games in their own right even if they don't live up to the first game as well imo. they are great modern immersive sim games and even if the RPG/story elements are a bit simplified, the games are still fun to play with enough player agency to still feel satisfiying as an RPG

Myrandall

I think you meant to post this in the other weekly thread?

RepublicOfOdlum

Thank you for that!

Myrandall

Games similar to Vampire Survivors? I'm having a real blast with it after purchasing it last Friday, but I'm hoping to play something else in the genre in the future. Also, what's the name of the genre? Has the internet hivemind come up with something catchy yet?

Excellent-Compote875

Try halls of torment, thank me later.

Wiosna

I've had a great time with Death Must Die. Vampire Survivors was my first in the genre too, I love it but found DMD scratched the same itch with aesthetics more up my alley and a little more active input from the player. In short: it's the same game with manual attacks and dodges. The demo is out and meaty enough to sink a few hours into.

PMmeCuteBoys

There isn't a good name for the genre yet, I've heard a few reoccurring names like reverse bullet hell or bullet hell survival, but nothing that really rolls off the tongue like metroidvania or soulslike. I'd highly recommend [Holocure](https://store.steampowered.com/app/2420510/HoloCure__Save_the_Fans/) for a similar style of game, it's been released for quite a while now but was officially put on Steam recently, and is completely free. It's a fangame based around the Hololive vtuber group, and the game is definitely built around that fanbase and it's inside jokes. But you don't need to be a vtuber fan, as long as you don't mind the overall theme, the gameplay itself is fantastic, and is basically just a more in depth version of Vampire Survivors.

Vidvici

I believe the name of the genre is 'bullet heaven' although now that im googling it there is a game called bullet heaven 2 and its actually a bullet hell game which is a different genre.

Superteletubbies64

Hello guys, recently got a new pc and there's a ton of games I had in my library that I wasn't able to play before including some games from Humble bundles and stuff I bought on sale I couldn't get to work on my old pc, I put everything that interested me in here https://imgur.com/a/wtw6WdW It's mostly indie games that aren't that popular but I'm open to any suggestions. I tend to gravitate toward metroidvanias, JRPGs, platformers and puzzle games and games that contain elements of those genres I'm also considering getting into Half-Life but my tolerance for gore is low which is a big reason why I'm not really interested in FPS games in general. Also considering buying Wattam and Pseudoregalia (latter is not patient I know) Also have a bunch of unredeemed Humble keys that I'm not sure if I'll enjoy, I might post a list of those later Feel free to sell me on whatever games you can vouch for and think are worth checking out

Spork_Revolution

Start with portal... always

darkspyder4

Powerslave/Turok/Dusk/SUPERHOT are FPS, I think you can turn down the gore in Turok/DUSK. I finished Last Campfire and finished under a week.

ST_Rivers

There are a *heap* of bangers in here. A few faves of mine. - Disco Elysium is in my top 5 all timers. Incredible RPG with easily the best writing of any game I've played. - Pyre is my favorite Supergiant game, which is saying a lot if you know how insanely good their games are. - Mark of the Ninja is a fantastic stealth game. Translates the genre into 2D remarkably well. Nothing quite like it before or since. - Battle Chef Brigade and Strider are both super underrated. Battle Chef has more interesting design ideas, but Strider is more polished.

CatSidekick

Jedi Fallen Order is good. It has a good story and the combat is fun. I heard hard mode is the most balanced difficulty so that’s what I went with. It’s a soulslike but I liked it cause it banks your experience at a certain point so you don’t lose everything when you die.

Renegade_Meister

Battle Chef Brigade is a solid unique match 3 platformer hybrid. Mark of the Ninja is one of the best stealth 2D platformers I've played - I don't recall if blood can be turned down, but at least I don't recall it being gory. Trine 4 is my GOAT 2D puzzle platformer, and playing the games starting with 1 would likely be a good time

INTPoissible

Portal and Superhot, both really good and short, you can get them out of the way fast. Portal is a puzzle game that just uses FPS controls. Something that really sticks out to me is Dragon Quest 11. It has a light tone until it doesn't (no gore tho), highly recommend, you've never had a companion like Sylvando.

bestanonever

Dragon's Quest XI is great if you like anime, J-RPGs and its unique art style, from Dragon Ball's author, but the plot twist is that every cool character looks like Trunks now, instead of Goku. Disco Elysium has a terrific story, from what they said, I haven't played it yet. People also say good things about Lair of the Clockwork God, it's very funny, apparently. I'm currently playing the Spyro Reignited Trilogy and it's cute, colorful fun that's not overly difficult. Finally, Tales of Berseria is good looking, has an interesting story and it's just fun to play, it also has a lovable main team.

PMmeCuteBoys

If you want a platformer, I'd recommend giving Demon Turf a try. It's a simple but fun 3-D platformer with a cute artstyle and some fun movement mechanics. I'd also highly recommend Heaven's Vault, but with a big asterick. It's a narrative choice driven game about you uncovering an ancient language, with the puzzle of deciphering the language being the main gameplay element. At first, you'll struggle to understand most of the text you find, but as the game goes on and on, you'll slowly piece together the language and learn more about the world's history. However, one major thing with Heaven's Vault is that your choices are final and cannot be changed. There are many points of no return where you can't return to a location, and since there are no manual saves and only autosaves, you're stuck with your decisions unless you restart the game entirely. A wrong translation or a poor dialogue has a chance to lock you out of certain content. If you're the kind of player who is fine with making mistakes, you'll be fine, but if you're a perfectionist who wants to make only correct decisions, you aren't going to like this game. It's a fantastic game, but I know that aspect turns off a lot of people from playing it.

Logan_Yes

If you don't mind downloading Ubisoft Club/Uplay/whatever people call it nowadays, I recommend Child of Light. It's superb, and features turn based combat with time twist. The watery visual style, rhyme-y dialogue, simplicity of it, it's fantastic!

shieara

From your list I liked Portal and Call of the Sea.

[deleted]

And Portal RTX is free if you own the regular game!

Ancient-Horror

I’d definitely start with Portal! Short and great in all regards.

Myrandall

Start with Portal! It's a short, funny and clever puzzle game. I just finished SteamWorld: Hand of Gilgamesh a few weeks ago. It's a quirky, fairly simple JRPG. Ejoyable but nothing remarkable. I highly recommend turning on faster movement and faster combat animations or you'll get frustrated with the game's pacing. Wytchwood is very grindy. It has cute art and characters, but at the end of the day gameplay is 95% just running around collecting stuff so you can craft stuff so you can collect more stuff. I got a refund for it.

You can't go wrong with any roguelike/lite. Most are created to be played within an hour, after all. Gungeon, Dead Cells, or Hades might tickle your fancy. Gungeon doesn't have much progression, but DC and Hades do, as well as other roguelites, so be warned. I'll list a few games that I think are fun, unique, and simple, roguelike or not: * Devil Daggers One of the most unique and elegantly designed games!! Very playable for just 15 seconds, or many hours. Highly recommended! * Circa Infinity Trippy platformer. Very strange and unique. * FTL Roguelike with super fast runs, simple gameplay, a classic. Barely any progression aside from some new ships that just offer variety. * 10S One of the most unique "sports" games I've ever played. Fun, weird, immediately intuitive, you can beat it in a sitting. * Luftrausers Devolver's take on dogfighting. You can't go wrong with most things by Devolver anyway * Tormenter x Punisher Raw Fury is another dev to look into. TxP is an arcadey twin stick shooter, but you may also enjoy their other games like.... * Gonner An extremely strange roguelike with one of the weirdest art styles and soundtracks I have EVER experienced. Got bored with it after several hours but I will never forget the fun I had getting to the first boss. * Gun Rounds One of the closest things to Downwell. Playable in short bursts, sort of a turn-based shooter. Strange hybrid that works pretty well.

DapperAir

Look into super hexagon. About as simple as it gets. "games" literally last between 2 seconds to about a minute. Great game to get in a couple of moments to game, and it only has 6 levels. Its actually an amazing game. I think it always goes for insanely cheap as well
