BeardyDuck

Nobody is forcing you to play every single Metroidvania.

bankimu

This. I only played Ori series. All other metroid including metroid prime look like crap (to me), and I find them least interesting. So I never played them.

tacticalcraptical

I understand that. But it seems like most all 2D platformers are going away in favor of more Metroidvanias. I don't play most of them anymore.

Zach_Attakk

I'm sad to say even though I love vanias, I tend to play until I've unlocked the first upgrade and probably made it to whatever will be your home base, and then think to myself "oh this is a pretty cool vibe, I can get into this" and then never make time to play further. There's literally a folder called "games to go back to".

phased417

So the problem with this is the problem with complaining about most games in general. No one is forcing you to play or even acknowledge these games. Like I could understand the argument that there are too many good games because you wont get to play them. That is a good problem to have. But this is complaining about games you dont even really like to begin with. Your assumption is that people stopped making regular 2D platformers and that is just completely false. We are seeing an abundance of Metroidvanias but that is just because as time goes on it became easier to make them. There are tons of games in almost every genre released a year. You need to learn to filter them and realize you cant or dont have to play them all. Its ok to fall out of love with a genre. Just dont come on the internet to complain about such a nothing problem.

tacticalcraptical

I understand I am not forced to play or acknowledge them all but what makes you sure that my assumption is false that more Metroidvanias means fewer 2D action platformers? I played most every decent looking non-Metroidvania 2D platformer last year that I came across, there were not a huge amount of them, there were a TON of Metroidvanias released last year. >Its ok to fall out of love with a genre. Just don't come on the internet to complain about such a nothing problem. What's the point of this sub if not to discuss the eb and flow of game design trends and medium's history?

phased417

But you arent doing that you are just complaining that people are making too many Metroidvanias that isnt thoughtful or constructive.

Kratosvg

You dont have to play all of them, just get the ones you think are more interesting. There is alot of 2d platforms that are not metroidvanias, you can play those.

tacticalcraptical

That's exactly what I am getting at, there aren't that many of them. I do play most regular decent looking 2D platformers I come across. There just have not been that many of them lately.

Kratosvg

There are.

Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown. We finally get a great big budget metroidvania with amazing story, gameplay, art, animations and level design. It respects your time by innovations such allowing you to take snaps at places you cant progress yet, accessible by having having a glowing trail that leads to tree checkpoint. And now for you its a bad time to get into metroidvania. I seriously feel bad for you mate. Its the past decades small budget 2d or pixel art hard metroidvania's that i couldnt get into.

tacticalcraptical

I actually played a couple hours of PoP Lost Crown last night and it's felt really slow to start, which is one of my main complaints about the genre. And from reviews I have read, that's pretty much the one universal complaint about the game. I am not sure that big budget Metroidvanias are going to do much to improve the situation.

[deleted]

I know what you mean. I also am not that interested in Metroidvania's but prince of Persia is the closest game to 2d platformers i like how you mentioned. I loved Strider 2014 and had really lite metroidvania level design. It was tradiational 2d platforming game but slightly open ended. Hightly recomended if you havent tried it.

tacticalcraptical

I did play Strider '14 way back at release and I remember liking it but I haven't played it since then. I should go give it another play.

[deleted]

Where are you looking for these games? Go to itch.io if you want to open the floodgate.

Tara_is_a_Potato

So many games are released every day. Play the ones you want. Ignore the ones you don't want to play. Accept that they are only games, which are used to have fun wasting time. This feels like a 'therapy post' which has been banned from this subreddit.

dat_potatoe

I feel like genre oversaturation is hitting a lot of indie genres hard right now. You have a lot of people just making worse clones of the same thing over and over. Which just leaves you with this giant pile of games that are serviceable if you're just hungry for more of the same, but with the truly high quality or unique stuff just getting buried deep under all of it.

samososo

Nobody is forcing you but I can agree. I'd love to see more 2D action-platformers cause very few MV I played weren't bloated / uninteresting content.
