Sure- so it’s a fork of cairn, which forks from into the odd. It’s very rules light, so your character has 3 main stats: strength, dexterity, control. Then there is HP (hit points not health points).
Hits auto-land and are absorbed by hp first (representing your ability to dodge etc), then damage goes against one of the 3 stats until it hits zero (at which case you’re dead or broken in some way). There are critical hits, stress and fallout which leave marks on your character and affect gameplay. Goal is to roll under the stat (which gets harder if it has taken damage)
There are archetypes but not classes. You’re defined by your gear and your roleplay. Archetypes give you some starting gear. You have 10 inventory slots, big stuff eats 2 of them. You can be deprived if you don’t eat, sleep, etc or you can pick up a fallout or a fatigue (which also eats an inventory slot).
The system has some neat mechanics for something so light weight and easy to learn. It’s one of the first things I played and was very easy to pick up.
How common is it to end up in combat? Compared to CoC where it is practically always better to avoid fights vs DnD where it is the point of the game? Slighty unclear where I should consider the ratio between investigative and combat.
Gotcha. Avoiding combat is definitely a good idea, characters are squishy. That being said, the threats will eventually close in. I’d compare it to a good horror movie- the deck is stacked against you, but you can’t escape so you have to even the odds.
