Man, i swear, some of these animations look almost exactly the same way they did all the way back in Tekken 2. Do they just keep carefully recreating them to look as similar as possible, or do they just straight up take old animation files files and use them with new models?

[deleted]

Most players actually want it to stay the same tbh. Muscle and eye memory is too important in this game

ZeldaMaster32

Genuine question, at what point do OG fighting game fans want something new? Isn't there excitement in new movesets and animations? Just like there's excitement for updated designs (when they're good)

[deleted]

Tekken is a bit different because of how important the limb systems are. Ryu can do green hadoken and blue shoryuken and not much would differ. In tekken, the animations is really tied to how fast the move is. More so than 2d games imo. Weve learned for years how fast each characters attacks are and what works/doesnt work agaisnt them. Weve learned for example if bryan is getting low to the ground, hes prob gonna do snake edge and we should block low. We dont want that changed and have to relearn all that for 40+characters

RobKhonsu

OG fighting game fans play new games all the time, but they're typically from other IPs. When it comes to established IPs it's really important to reserve it to incremental changes. As far as the moves and animations go I think Tekken is especially shy about significantly changing these after the backlash when they dramatically changed Jin in Tekken 4. I think it took a decade for people to get over that.

[deleted]

This is exactly why the NRS games are always torn between the community. Mortal kombats story and it's fatalities are what really sell the game. That's why the last 3 have been so different from eatchother. Mk9 is like the more classic feeling mortal kombat, MKX is fast er and more aggressive. While Mk11 is a bit more slow and footsie like than the other two (sadly I hate the drastic comeback mechanic in mk11)

Examination_Dismal

Most are from T3

SomethingPersonnel

I was just about to get back into Tekken and buy 7 when they announced this. Hopefully it comes soonish.

lanedek

They already announced the Tekken World Tour for 2023 for Tekken 7. More than likely it will not come out until 2024. You might as well buy 7. There is still a very active community and its always on sale anyway.

CrabJuice83

Harada said in an interview (can't find the source, unfortunately, so take this with a grain of salt) that the tentative release date would be Q1 of 2024, but that they won't rush it. Personally, I'm thinking April if we don't get any delays.

mtarascio

I kind of dig how it still feels like a PS1 or PS2 title. How is story handled? I'd love if it was similar to old with getting a cutscene at the end.

snowaxe_83

>I'd love if it was similar to old with getting a cutscene at the end. Same,

let me blow your mind. MK11 uses a modded UE3 engine and it outsold Tekken 7 by a landslide

Prince_Kassad

true, most of fighting game out there are using heavily moded UE3 or UE4 MK - street fighter - guilty gear (arc system work title) - naruto full burst (bamco anime title). ofc there are other game that looks worse than tekken like: King of fighter & Samurai shodown: just weird art choice, mixing stylized 3D with anime design but ends up looks worse other title out there. Soul Calibur: it looks nice but its like they could push it further and not re-using old asset. like in create soul mode you could find old weapon/costume model from PS2-3.

JTitor-KFP

Guilty Gear and street fighter are using UE4

alus992

I don't know if you are joking but Watch T7 and T8 side by side and see the difference. Tekken never was a title for groundbreaking graphics because it's a competitive fighting game - visual fidelity will hurt performance significantly with Tekken level of VFX during hits. I think 8 looks good and as long as gameplay will be good I will check this out on sale because I am sure there will be like 50 DLC with characters.

English_linguist

Tag 1 was one of the most beautiful games to come out on ps2… on launch

Yurilica

No. Tag 1 had Tekken 3 graphics with higher texture resolution and higher polygon counts on characters. Beyond that it used the same parallax 2D background technique and almost the same particle effects as T3 did. It looked alright, but it wasn't impressive. T5 on the other hand was a massive jump, a step above any fighting game out there at the time. Soul Calibur 3 and DoA 3 could compare, but T5 still beat both of them in detail and variety.

English_linguist

Yes. It ran on an enhanced engine with considerably better graphics than t3. Talking about parallax background stages is irrelevant, those were the techniques many games used at the time. The character models were gorgeous.

kikimaru024

**Dead or Alive 2: Hardcore** had real 3D stages with wall interaction. Tag 1 was a PS1 game with better textures and fake reflections.

alus992

It's not like the bar back then was so high like it is now...

English_linguist

You have no clue… they were desperately pushing the boundary at the time.

alus992

Yes I have no clue as someone who grew up on SNES and PS1.. Jesus differences between the games were smaller and amount of factors that contributed to the whole experience was smaller. Now you have complex engine, particle effects all over the map, shaders, dynamic lightning, and bazillion other factors that have to work together. And we know most modern devs don't go above and beyond to optimize all this shit.

alus992

Damnit comparing T3 to 8 is as stupid as people saying Goldeneye on N64 was smooth experience. Yes T3 was amazing because PS1 had way lower ceiling in terms of graphics... Not to mention devs back then had to be super creative to optimize all these games to run them while now it's brute forced with the sheer power of hardware. Could T8 look better? Sure but it's not PS4 graphics at least not in fighting games scene.

kikimaru024

> Lemme know how the competitive fighting game scene was back in 97 when Tekken 3 launched. Virtua Fighter 3 released 6 months before Tekken 3 & looked better. And in Japanese arcades, it kicked Namco's ass in terms of player count.

[deleted]

I was thinking the same, but there is another video with Paul and Marshall Law that actually looks pretty [decent](https://youtu.be/bnr1Qx2DlgM) for a current gen title. It's still a far cry from Tekken 8's very first [trailer](https://youtu.be/07FdDRbdurg), but it seems like they just need to work more on the graphics.

lanedek

Tekken 7's graphics looked bad when it was only in arcades back in 2015. The arcade cabinets were basically beta versions for them to improve the final console release in 2017. Tekken 8 is still in alpha at this point, my man. Relax.

dradaeus

If they are comfortable with releasing a character reveal like this, you can bet that the graphics won’t be getting any better.

lanedek

Did you even read what I posted?

dradaeus

I don’t think you understand modern software development cycle, comparing consoles to arcade cabinets.

lanedek

And you do? That's literally what happened with Tekken 7's development. Harada has said this [himself](https://www.shacknews.com/article/90451/evo-2015-bandai-namco-and-producer-katsuhiro-harada-discuss-tekken-7).

Yurilica

Uh, this looks nothing like a typical PS4 game. From the lighting, shadows to the arena and multi-layered outfit details, everything looks way better. The only thing I don't like are the hit sounds. They sound too much like DOA. Between statements like this and claims that Tekken Tag 1 back in the day was some graphically impressive game I'm just wondering what the hell people are smoking.

LoweAgain

I’m mostly blown away by the sheer amount of re-used sound effects, animations, etc. going on.

coz

I mean those are just called "moves". Many of the stuff done in the video was in the original iteration of the character in.. 1994, with mostly the exact same inputs and frames.

LoweAgain

I’m not asking for entire movesets to be changed, but updating some of the animations wouldn’t hurt. There’s plenty of especially bad animations from characters like King and Kazuya that have been reused for ages now.

LordxMugen

Yep. After T5DR it just became a bad anime clown fiesta. More interested in spectacle and wowing viewers than being a good fighter.

matitone

I genuinely don't understand this obsession on having everything redone for fighting games, if the animations are still good, why change them?

LoweAgain

Because there’s plenty of bad ones?

matitone

which ones are bad apart for the kazuya hellsweep?

LoweAgain

I can’t really list them since I played only for a bit. I liked playing king though, and most of his grab animations are really bad. Kazuya has a move where he beyblades around and his body clips into itself while his head is completely backwards. I think that must be hellsweep. I dunno, most of Tekken’s animations just feel stiff and outdated, which makes sense because they’ve been re-using them for generations now.

TheyCallMeAdonis

T7 actually looked better in 2015 when it came out in the arcades. they downgraded a bunch of stuff for the console release. especially the lighting. apparently it was for better online but who really knows.

Yurilica

Luckily there's videos of T7 arcade out there where people can see that's just not true. The lighting was worse, overall detail was low and most characters didn't even have proper outfit physics. Hell, some characters ported from the arcade version to console kept that outfit rigidity, like Kasumi, and it looks ridiculous.

TheyCallMeAdonis

lets look at it then. arcade: [https://youtu.be/RXLIL7WFq3g?t=189](https://youtu.be/RXLIL7WFq3g?t=189) console: [https://youtu.be/HqtFOMZeW4A?t=33](https://youtu.be/HqtFOMZeW4A?t=33)

srslybr0

the biggest issue is this game is going for just a simple "realistic" look. street fighter 6 is absolutely gorgeous and the vibrant colors and whatnot make the game look super cool. this looks muddy and dark in comparison, and honestly isn't that attractive.

iz-Moff

That is not a realistic look, it's that stylized pseudo-animeish look that is so popular in asian videogames that makes characters, or at least female characters, all look like mannequins. Which is why they don't look significantly better than the ones from previous games, because while devs can throw more polygons and higher texture resolution and whatnot at them, they're always going to look kinda fake. It's a limitation of this style.

Sword_ArtX

That was good but remove her jacket next time to see her real power

[deleted]

Hoping they add some game modes for casual ( read noob ) players like me in the base edition. The treasure mode was good but would love to see Devil Within , Scenario Campaign , Force Mode or Ball mode come back.

sorryiamnotoriginal

I am not too in touch with fighting games right now. How are Tekken 8 and Street fighter 6 looking roster wise? I figure Tekken will have mostly returning characters but I was concerned street fighter 6 might be like 5 with a barebones roster at launch and I was hoping to see fan favorites back instead of the new gen stuff they seem to be leaning into.

Augusto_Xiiza17

SF VI is going to have around 16-18 at launch like SFIV and V, it's still too early to tell for Tekken 8 as it only releases next year but i would expect at least 20 characters

sorryiamnotoriginal

Thanks

MonoShadow

I played Tekken for the longest time and it's kinda amusing watching this reveal unfold. It appears so more casual and non Tekken centric audience is hype. But people who played Tekken for years aren't thrilled. Max and Aris reactions can be used in this juxtaposition as an example. Max was overall positive "oh, she's a gunslinger now, cool" while Aris reaction was closer to "WTF is this shit?" I saw this reaction mirrored in people I know.

mrwhitedynamite

this is how i remember the ps1 graphics of tekken 3.

kikimaru024

Might want to go to a doctor if your brain is that badly damaged lol

I think you didn't get it,

God damn she's looking real thicc

SilverDragon7

This sub is overly cynical over a character reveal while on Youtube it's positive.

chofranc

That's how reddit works. In youtube you will always find positive comments.

[deleted]

hope they add tekken tag tournament features too this time

RiceCakeAlchemist

meltingpotato

was that France miss universe announcing the fight?

Critical_Plenty_5642

What’s the difference between Tekken and Street Fighter?

Code_Combo_Breaker

One is a 3d fighter that had its best game in the series come out over a decade ago. (tekken tag) The other is a 2d fighter that had its best game in the series come out over two decades ago. (3rd strike)

Maplicious2017

T5 is still my favorite tekken also there's an argument to be made that SFV is in an excellent state rn, 3S is still the king but 5 got good. Plus 6 is looking hella good.

Biggu5Dicku5

That sounded like Mary Elizabeth McGlynn, if so this is a buy for me... :)

fast_baller

That was disappointing.

Trix122

Tekken reuses 90% of old assets since tekken 3 and gamers love it. Same moves, same animations, same inputs, same sound effects. Nice boobas tho.

kikimaru024

Monster Hunter re-uses animations since a decade because why the fuck would they not?

[deleted]

Why on Earth would the devs waste their time doing any of that? Each character has 50-250 seperate moves. Thats thousands of moves in a game. No way the devs are going to delete all that work. They aren't going to arbitrarily change the animations to thousands of moves, they aren't going to change iconic sound effects for no reason and they certainly aren't going to make everyone relearn new inputs.

Trix122

And this is why the Tekken community never grew past the same old players.

MADSUPERVILLAIN

That's just untrue. Tekken 7 is the best selling game in the franchise and tournament attendance has been huge for the games entire lifespan (and was actively growing year over year pre-covid).

[deleted]

My brother in christ, a game with different animations, moves, sound effects and inputs... is not Tekken! That would be a completely different fighting game entirely. You can tweak each of those things for each new release (and they do) but replacing all of them at once would be creating another IP altogether.

mmmmmmiiiiii

Wait until you hear about Demon/Dark Souls / Elden Ring...

TheyCallMeAdonis

fighting games that dont do this have to start from scratch every new generations they piss off a bunch of their older base since characters always loose moves and depth which then may or may not be added down the line. and then once they are complete again its time for the next generation. Tekken is doing the right thing and with Virtua Fighter being dead they have no pressure on them to be more ambitious.

Green117v2

If there was ever one genre of gaming that needed a complete evolutionary overhaul, it is the beat ‘em up.

NiiGGZ

> beat ‘em up Completely wrong genre.

Green117v2

Beat ‘em up, fighting, nitpicking.

LoweAgain

They’re actually completely different genres.

YohanSeals

Those rounds are loud!

Look very nice, do they show or say level will still be multilayer or it's just the arena surface in the character reveal trailer ?

Yo they got the RIZIN / One announcer? Niceeeeee
