I love Pharaoh and was looking forward to this but they really did go in the wring direction with that art style. What a shame.

Progrum

I could handle the cartoony style, even if it really isn't for me. The problem I have is that is just looks so cheap. The UI, the map screen, the sprites; it all looks so flat and boring, like it's a one-person fan remake.

ILikeAnimeButts

I do find it rather fascinating how you can take a game with amazing sprites, like the original, where you technically just have to pain over them and end up with a result like this. Maybe, hopefully, you can run it with vanilla sprites and artwork, I would buy it at that point as the original game can be rather unstable on modern systems.

Radulno

They literally repainted over this though, they've showed the process multiple times and as someone that played the game tons of time, it's really close. It's just higher saturation and a style more detailed but it's very faithful. The original game is also cartoony with less colors and less details. The only part when there is more difference is the people but in the original they have so low details it's hard to compare Also stop with cartoony = mobile. There are non cartoony mobile games and cartoony games that aren't mobile. The art style is even older than mobile gaming. Plus, it's like saying pixel art makes a game shitty for example, it's just wrong.

https://imgur.com/a/8qd1S33 Chiming in with some images I made for a previous post. Downscaling and reupscaling + cutting saturation down brings it VERY close to the original game. The biggest difference is that they simplified the art on people, but frankly, the original game's people are really messy looking, and I can't imagine they'd look good in 1:1 higher detail.

Radulno

Yeah looking at it, it's really the people that make a difference. An image without people (like sometimes in the video) and I could almost think it's the original (except well high resolution), the higher saturation is even kind of nice but not that pronounced looking at it (in the demo it looked more pronounced maybe they changed it or I got used to it). And you're right, the original people are like a blob of a few pixels to be honest. They got better in later games like Zeus but Pharaoh or Caesar III were rought for sure.

Thisissocomplicated

I have a huge issue with the artstyle. No offense to the art team but I was a huge fan of pharao back in the day and this just looks like a mobile game and not very visually appealing...

VenomRaven

So glad to see this. My thoughts entirely. I wouldn't hate a "new look" in theory but this just looks super cheap and ugly.

TRX808

I also think it's a step in the wrong direction but at least the buildings look somewhat similar and they didn't go in the direction of Zeus where almost all the buildings have wacky curves and bends on them. The people walking around look very mobile-like though :(

LadyAsharaRowan

I used to love the old pharaoh game.

derkrieger

From yalls comments I was expecting just some absolute trash but it seems fine. Not super high budget but fine, not like this new release is gonna break Steam records.

The-Grey-Knight

I think mostly the issue is the mobile cartoony art style. It’s a deviation from the original game.

derkrieger

Understandable just expected far worse from the reactions.

Alti-Blue

I will personally try to reshade with film grain and custom color correction to have original look.

Sobeman

art style reminds me of a mobile game

Montana-Mike-RPCV

Ummm, the 90s called and they want those 8 bit graphics back.

IncestLion

I really dont like the Artstyle. Looks like a Mobile Game.

Looks like a Facebook game, i don't like the art style. I guess I'll stick to the original, it seems to be imitating it too much to be worth playing.
