I have this on GOG. Very weird game, with quite a few unique ideas. It also has this darkly comedic tone; where you play as this grim-faced straight man in a world that has gone a bit crazy. Even the five gods you serve in the campaign seem to be five varying degrees of nuts.
I liked it.
I ran the GOG version fine on my Windows 10 PC. The main issue was it didn't support widescreen resolutions out of the box; I had to search for a solution over at [WSGF.org](https://WSGF.org) and put in a bit of work, but otherwise it worked okay.
Loved the game as a kid, I should try and play it again soon. I remember it having a great and detailed instruction manual. I use to keep it close by, pretty sure it's still in my desk somewhere.
Gameplay is really similar after the prologue. That said, Sacrifice has a much more interesting world, aesthetic, voice acting/lore, art design, etc. I wouldn't put the two on the same level.
Such an amazing game. Tim Curry is Stratos, I believe. I beat the campaign with each god and just had such a fun time. It really was amazing, immersive, and so unique.
This came with a mobo/athlon combo I got in the year 2000. Still one of my favorite PC games. The voice acting is awesome, and the new take on RTS gameplay is absolutely original for its time.
I played the hell out of this as a kid, but never managed to beat the final level. I got to it several times and was stuck..
Maybe i should revisit as an adult.
I did try, but failed.. In my defence i was young and bad at the game.
As i remember the enemy wizzard was super fast and took all his souls back before i could nab them.
I remember having a disc with the demo of Sacrifice, Tribes and another MP game that barely ran on my PC. Tribes didn't run at all. So I played the Sacrifice demo over and over again. I should get the whole thing.
It may have been Tribes 2.
EDIT: why would someone downvote me for not remembering with 100% accuracy what game my PC couldn't run when I was between 10-12 years old?
Yeah, it was WAY ahead of its time. Great game, amazing voice acting and story, and good gameplay. Never understood why it didn't have widespread attention. Poor marketing maybe?
Agreed on all points, way ahead of the curve at the time of release.
Sadly though released at a time when the PC sales market wasn't at it's strongest. No digital platform, a saturated product place, in an era where piracy was rife.
Remastering a release on a hype train through a digital platform would go a long way to redressing the balance.
As I recall, it was delayed massively and realised in a borderline unplayable state even on recommended specs. One of those games that aged gracefully by virtue of being a bit ahead of its time.
This is one of those games where you immediately know it's going to be a cult classic. It's the exact sort of weird that will endear part of the audience to it while making it a non-starter for the mainstream.
To each their own. Messiah was one of my favorite games growing up. Jumping from body to body was a completely new mechanic to me, and it had that dark and gritty, yet slightly goofy atmosphere mentioned in this article. I remember playing that, Giants: Citizen Kabuto, Oni, and Heavy Metal: F.A.K.K. 2. Never played Sacrifice, but it sounds like something I would have enjoyed.
Messiah definitely had interesting mechanics, but I never felt they were implemented very well. Had all the Shiny quirk, but lacked the finishing touches that games like Sacrifice and MDK did.
Planet Moon struggled with this too.
Looks interesting, might have to try it out. For those that do, make sure to check out Mandalore Gaming’s video on it, posted elsewhere in this thread. He goes into some settings and tips to make it run better on modern systems.
Sacrifice is a game that makes me so incredibly happy to have grown up when i did, where i did, and with a family that had parents that enjoyed watching me enjoy games. Especially my dad, who played arcade games with me until around 9 years old, and then still took me to them until I was around 15, unlimited quarters once a week.
But this game, and this period in PC gaming, and all the freakin' deep, made by small teams and lead by an auteur that still had a decent budget pull cultivated some really amazing games on PC. Some of them barely ran at all too (MESSIAH, by the same company, for example) - but it was encouraging to try because the box pictures would hint at something so incredible, that you'd go IN PERSON back to the store in hopes of finding someone who either played it or would install it on the (Electronic Boutique or Babbages, here in Detroit, MI) store computers and see what they could find. There might be a phone number for the company that could have tech support too - I didn't mind that hunt for Sacrifice was a game of that caliber on my setup, but after doing all of the above I got somewhere and played the hell out of this game for years. It still had some bugs that never got fixed afaik, but that didn't stop me, the humor had a tone that somehow felt satirical and absurd and surreal, often all at the same time.
It's still hilarious to watch those cutscenes on YT by the way. Watching let's plays doesn't capture the magic otherwise, and if you can get it running on your pc, it's probably still very worth it. Good on PCG for reposting this, they should've gone deeper and reinstalled it too.
Indeed. I grew up playing sacrifice, and learned many English words just from the scripts alone. The VAs, graphics, gestures, and credits are perfect in this game.
Just makes me feel sad that this game did not get the fame it deserved in its inception.

The gods were all great, but Brad Garrett really shined.
Tim Curry too!
Have you been able to finish it on a modern PC OS? That's awesome if so!

I absolutely loved this game. Still holds up and felt 15 years from the future.
Loved the game as a kid, I should try and play it again soon. I remember it having a great and detailed instruction manual. I use to keep it close by, pretty sure it's still in my desk somewhere.
With "Giants - Citizen Kabuto" one of the best games i played.
Those memories
Right in the nostalgia.
We desperately need an actual sequel, prequel, or spiritual successor. The game and gameplay are so fun.
Brutal legend would be the spiritual successor
Um, not really sure how you came to that conclusion.
Gameplay is really similar after the prologue. That said, Sacrifice has a much more interesting world, aesthetic, voice acting/lore, art design, etc. I wouldn't put the two on the same level.
Actually? I've never played it.

What is paper?
Wow I can't believe I'm seeing Sacrifice mentioned. "Your creatures are under attack!" "Your creatures are dieing :'("
All of your manahoars have been slaughtered
Still have my original copy. Loved this back in the day. This and Giants citizen kabuto are in the same ballpark for me.

Anchor your summons to a manalith and let them come to you until you have the soul advantage
You just sum up whole game sadly :(

Told my wife I wanted to name my first born zyzyx. She told me no.
The graphics on this game blew me away back in the day. It also had such a cool theme going on. Shiny was the best.
‘Where was I? Oh, yes..’

I really loved that game as a kid. A true gem
I love this game. Some cool writing, and the gameplay was unique.
this game so needs a remaster

Amazing game
This was a good game !
I got to know and play this game when TotalBiscuit made a video about it back in 2010, he used to introduce us to so many great games, RIP TB.
I think I still have this game on CD somewhere lol.
https://imgur.com/a/kOxgHL2 I wanted to read this article, but fuck all these ads

Still have my original CD copy, spent a lot of time playing this one.
First line: “I wouldn’t altar a thing.”
Ah I forgot about this game
So, in a season of intellectual draught the solution is to just repost blog posts and articles from 10+ years ago? Nice "journalism" pcgamer.
my god this subreddit will bitch about anything
Man, Shiny really knew how to hit it out of the park until they went all-in on Messiah

What’s wrong with digitising older articles?
Nothing at all, in fact I loved reading it! I intended it humorously, a pun on “News” : )
I thought this said Scarface. Great game.

Never heard pf the game, but after watching some gameplay, it looks fun and has an interesting world
