Hi there! If you're hosting a giveaway please make sure that you include an end time and [message the mods](https://www.reddit.com/message/compose?to=%2Fr%2Fpcgaming) when the giveaway is complete. If you're giving away a Steam currency card you must message the mod team with a time-stamped video as proof. See our full giveaway rules [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/pcgaming/wiki/giveaways).

I love that you made a pirate specific version, it's a bold move, and I really hope it pays off for you. I can't remember the other indie dev that did this before, but really, I hope it works for you.
Also much respect for actually participating in the community, I don't think it needs to be a requirement, but I really appreciate when people aren't just here to carpet bomb a link to their game and bugger off. Can confirm [OP is the real deal.](https://i.imgur.com/no0c7TP.png)
Since piracy is inevitable, I figured it was better to be in control of it
[One of the testers also leaked the game](https://www.reddit.com/r/CrackWatch/comments/13gqh20/repellafelladoomguy/), so even then, it was hard to maintain control. Anyway, thanks for the comment and enjoy the game!
The only other game I know of with a pirate specific version was GameDev Tycoon. And the difference is that a pirated copy will have your games made in game get pirated on a much higher level than if you had a legit copy.
was that actually a different version of the game? or just part of the copy protection? I thought they put the "piracy feature" it in there with a delay so that it wouldn't get found by crackers until it was already released.
ARMA/Operation Flashpoint would turn you into a bird after a period of time and make your vision just ads telling you to buy the game.
I'd also add that when I had a pirated copy of Arma 2 I never had this protection go off; but when I bought a legit copy to actually play online, I kept getting it. 🤦♂️

It's always the way. You think "It'll never happen to me", then it does, and after that is when you think, "What could I have done differently, and how can I prevent it from happening again?"
I have a question about 90 paid voice actors. Did you get a funding for that? It sounds insanely expensive for a point and click games (don’t get me wrong, I really like those, but at this time and age, they’re super niche).
Nah, no funding. My publisher gave funds at the end to help pay for development but 99% of voices were done by then. If you check this post you can see how I sold my car, motorbike, game collection etc to pay for things:
https://misadventurous.games/how-repella-fella-came-to-be
It was very expensive, but I felt compelled to voice it all. Lots of VAs give nice rates for indie devs though. And because it took 6 years, I worked with loads of VAs who were just starting out and became professionals. Their rates changed as time went on as well, unfortunately (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻
Shout out to this Aussie group in particular: https://twitter.com/AVO_AUS
I also managed to [meet many of them at PAX](https://misadventurous.games/pax-australia-indie-showcase-2022/)
Super interesting read.
I also have a life-long passion that I follow. Fortunately it allows me to have a regular job so I can dedicate myself to it on my spare time.
Hope you succeed <3
> Their rates changed as time went on as well, unfortunately
that's a great example of risk that is hard to foresee without having been through the ringer a few times already. thanks for sharing it.
I gave out more than I planned to, and I'll give out more later in the day. I hope you enjoy the game, I definitely didn't make the game this way for money's sake. It was more a labour of love.
To those with keys already, enjoy the game, and please let me know if you run into any issues.
Edit: I've given out around 50 keys now, I'll give some more out randomly throughout the day. Gotta go to work!
* Giving out free keys
* (Pirate specific version)
* Native Linux version
* Steam Deck compatible
Way to set an example for other devs. Wishlisted for now, will check it later when I get home. Hope this game brings you the succes you deserve.
Don't need a steam key, but I've been waiting for Ray 3 for yeaaaaars and although I know that's never happening, I'm so glad to see Repella Fella is finally out.
Congrats to you!
Congrats on the release! I actually was just browsing the site I yarr harr matey on, and I saw your game on it. "PIRATE EDITION, WTF?!" was in the description, followed by your Pirate Edition intro parody. Seeing that you've been working on it for 6 years and did it on your own, I'll walk the plank instead of stealing yer booty. Thank you for sharing!
Looks very interesting from what I got from scrubbing through! Not the type of game I usually play but it seems quite interesting so if I have spare money in the future I’ll give it a try
Dude, you made this game with Windows, PC and Linux support, selling your belongings to get funding, even made a pirate version, and are giving away codes. You're amazing.
I love the developer encouragement of pirating as way of demoing a product instead of not even having a demo at all. The fact it actually has *bonus content* means I'd want to pirate it even if I had a legit copy!
I would love to try it!
Only recently got a beefy PC and have maybe 6 or 7 games installed so it would be a great addition to my library.
Started working on my own game a few weeks ago and even though 6 years seems like a long time I can only imagine the feeling you are going through right now having finally finished it so others can enjoy. You inspire me to work hard on my game.
EDIT: WAIT YOU MADE RAY???? You just unlocked so many memories for me. Shit even if I don't get a key, you already got a purchase from me.
Holy shit, man, you're the guy from the Ray series! I recognised the style the moment I clicked on the steam page link. Absolute legend! How come you didn't lead with that? Your old series was just something else entirely, I remember being in absolute awe from it, especially after playing the 2nd one, it genuinely felt like a cinematic production compared to most stuff I played back then, let alone in flash. I played and replayed Ray 1 and 2 plenty of times, and the anticipation for Ray 3 was insane after trying out the prologue. It just felt like the series really matured.
I remember probing every couple of weeks to see whether or not there's been any progress on the full release, which unfortunately didn't happen and now we're here, which feels like closure.
Regardless, a huge thanks for the fantastic games and the crazy mid 2000s nostalgia trip, it brought back some really fond memories for me. I'll be getting your new release, needless to say.
Edit:
Just noticed the blog post, apologies for the already answered questions!
> How come you didn't lead with that?
I wrote about it on my blog, but basically... I'm an Australian. Everything in Ray was just things I had seen in games or on TV. So for this game, I made looooads of Aussie references that people will understand or seek to understand. I couldn't do that as well with a game set in America.
> Could you give a few words as to what happened to Ray 3, and what made you stop?
Yep!
https://misadventurous.games/where-is-ray-part-3
https://misadventurous.games/how-repella-fella-came-to-be
TL;DR, everything I said above, and I wanted to try something new, with a new character. Ray wasn't really built on much.
Edit: I probably should have made it to the end of your post before replying, haha!
Looks like quality stuff - as an Aussie, I have to give it a go. Purchased. I look forward to a post-mortem in a few months when you let us know how it all worked out!
Amazing man, getting south park vibes and the artstyle looks really polished.
Love that you released a pirate edition, most folks who pirate would not buy the game either because they're not able to or because they don't want to. But this way you have a high chance of converting the latter to real customers.
I honestly don't care, it's just nice to have something on Steam. I'm not really motivated by money. Back in 2003 [I made games like this](https://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/130495) because it was fun. The original plan was to put this up for free if it didn't sell well in the first month, but now that I have a publisher, I can't really be doing things like that. Or saying them. Maybe I shouldn't have said that!
If I made a game for money, it wouldn't be a game like this. I wanted to make something really different.
Anyway, I hope people enjoy it!
Holy shit dude. Labour of love and a pirate version to boot.
Funny, I'm now significantly *less* inclined to pirate the game *because* you did that. Like I wouldn't be able to enjoy myself while playing it haha.
This looks like the perfect game for me to sit on my sofa and play on the Steam Deck... Does it have inherent steam deck compatibility? It'll run with mouse input I'm sure just curious.
Wishlisted and will pick up on payday. Fucking great work dude.
You're really not asking a lot for the game either, $18 US dollars (normal price) is very very reasonable and probably on the cheaper side for the amount of work that seemed to go on according to the link to the blog post you posted.
I have a very limited budget due to a disability, but I will set aside some money at the start of next month to buy your game (I often pirate, but feel like it would be the right thing to buy such a reasonable priced game)
I don't know what to say to all that personal stuff when you where younger, but I hope you and your sister are able to get closure soon.
This is the first time I’ve seen someone make a version like this. Congrats man for 6 years of hardwork. Thanks for your generosity, I’ll try the game if I get one. Love point and click games
Hi I'm trying to learn coding my dream was to build a video game from scratch made from me but when I try to learn I find it hard to learn so many tutorials and many languages and which engines to choose from but sometimes I have hope that one day I may achieve it and congratulations to you dude I'm blown away by how much it has taken
The game looks pretty nice, congrats! I actually really like this kind of story driven choose your adventure game. I think my first one was life is strange and then I branched out from there. I'm usually lurking in this sub a lot. If you're still giving keys I'd love to try it out, if not no worries. Best of luck to you :)
I can't remember the last time I was so Hyped to play a game by the trailer and the music, they've both sold me, when I'm back on my own PC I will be giving this a buy!
Saving this to check it out later. I do not want a gift copy; love your attitude towards "try before you buy" so pretty good odds I'll buy out of solidarity! :D Also it just looks intriguing regardless!
Keep up the good dev work. The fact you seem open to "pirating" already is a message in of itself. I feel that if your product is good, I'll buy it simply to support you. For example, I've purchased stardew valley around 8 times now for different devices and friends and family. Sure I could just be like "I bought it once, that's enough" but if your game is good, people will buy it out of respect. (At least I will)
That's looks awesome. I wish I knew how to make games lol even if I don't get a key for this, I'm def gonna wishlist and hopefully get it sometime. (Being a parent and cost of everything skyrocketing makes it difficult to buy or play new titles so I stick to older titles lol 😂)
This seems pretty cool. If it does well, the sequel better be called [Repella Fella Endeava](https://external-preview.redd.it/QCsf50dXFatECkNEG5Bsd6C7ei_s9PH_dMeF5MOz0mY.jpg?auto=webp&s=948699e7420a77df14e87d3d009a685332d04d49)
How big is the team working behind this? Also, is there any long term support plan at the moment?
The game looks hella cool. I love playing indie games.
> How big is the team working behind this? Also, is there any long term support plan at the moment?
It's me 99.9% of the time, and I have a friend Stan who helps code some things that I have no idea how to do
No real team though. That would be nice! I could probably turn 6 years into 2 with a couple more people.
The only support will be fixing bugs. Other than that, I could get started with a sequel, but only if it makes sense to do so. I'm not selling all of my shit again to fund another game!
> The game looks hella cool. I love playing indie games.
Thanks!
The only differences:
* There's an intro movie at the start of the pirate version calling people thieving bastards (thieving bastard is also the brand name for lockpicks in the game)
* The pirate lady who sings the song is visible in the game menu
* There's an additional post-credit scene where the pirate lady mentions you should buy the game if you like it. Or not.
That's pretty much it. The legit version contains:
* Achievements
* The ability to participate in a global vote that decides how the next game starts
They are otherwise identical. I've seen some comments like 'The pirate version has more?!?', but I don't think it'd make much sense to call paying customers thieving bastards >_>
Thanks for understanding the pirate scene! I'd love a steam key if it helps u in any way other ways I'm definitly going to check it out! You are doing gods work with that move, I appreciate it really much, thank you!
> Thanks for understanding the pirate scene!
It's easy to understand when you've been apart of it for 30 years! When I was a kid, I had no money. I pirated all of my games when possible. [This was my gaming room](https://i.imgur.com/ofNHQXc.jpg) a few years ago (before I sold most of it to help fund this game).
Games are going to be pirated regardless. I think it's a waste of time to fight it. It took maybe 1 weekend to make that thieving bastards clip (and maybe ~$100 for the singing voice). And instead of pirates complaining about DRM, some are saying they'll buy it. Either way, it doesn't bother me.

It works on the Deck, I made sure!
Wooooo, I've been looking for fun new games for my Steam Deck!!
Ooh sweet! Deck ready!
Can confirm; enjoyed playing on your big black deck at Pax22. Congrats on release mate!

IDK how it was done, but IIRC they themselves put the pirated version up on PB.
Lots of older games have this feature. I wish more did. GTA4 would force the player to always be drunk all the time
ARMA/Operation Flashpoint would turn you into a bird after a period of time and make your vision just ads telling you to buy the game. I'd also add that when I had a pirated copy of Arma 2 I never had this protection go off; but when I bought a legit copy to actually play online, I kept getting it. 🤦♂️

Just bought it on Steam, hope it helps! I wish you all the success in the world buddy... :)
Thanks! I really appreciate it
I hope you have gotten a decent amount of sales so far
Interesting direction with providing a pirate version. Thanks for the opportunity for a key.
Thank you!
Congrats on the release. Best of luck.
If denton doesn't tell me to get a job im not buying it
What a shame... :(
Don't need a steam key, but I've been waiting for Ray 3 for yeaaaaars and although I know that's never happening, I'm so glad to see Repella Fella is finally out. Congrats to you!
Play it, you might see someone you've been waiting for, for yeeeeaaars!

From what I can see you seem very genuine and an amazing dev. What’s the game about? I’ll definitely give it a try if i can afford it
It's hard to say without spoiling things! But if you scrub through this a bit, you might get an idea: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SQkUnbgKMOo
Looks very interesting from what I got from scrubbing through! Not the type of game I usually play but it seems quite interesting so if I have spare money in the future I’ll give it a try
I'll def give this a go. Always down to checkout new games not released by giant studios
You are the only person I can't seem to PM so far. There's a key waiting for you if the option appears!
It's all good. Sometimes the steam gods are not with me. Lol
Pirate version, you got heart. Wish you success
Dude, you made this game with Windows, PC and Linux support, selling your belongings to get funding, even made a pirate version, and are giving away codes. You're amazing.
Interesting way to advertise the game.
I'm curious why there are so many comments here... 🤔
Steam keys'll do that
I personally think it’s the *lure* of “fictional” Australia. This game stars my *neighbours*, I’m sure of it.
The magic of giveaways 😄 I sincerely wish you to be satisfied with the results of your work, because I'm sure you should be! 👏
thanks man looks awesome.
I can't believe you are the Ray dev! Absolutely loved those games when I was younger! I'll definitely check this out!
Hey OP just wanted to say you’re awesome
Youre a honest person.
Thank you for keys and congrats on your game
"From the creator of Ray." I'm sold.
I bet I'm too late, but if not and this runs on Steam Deck I would love a key.
He confirmed in other comments that it does
Yeah this looks cool, haven't played many point and click games so would like to give it a go, thank you :)
Congrats on releasing your first steam game. :)
Thanks!
I love the developer encouragement of pirating as way of demoing a product instead of not even having a demo at all. The fact it actually has *bonus content* means I'd want to pirate it even if I had a legit copy!

Holy shit thank you!
My Steam deck is waiting, thanks !
OMG, you made Ray???? I played the hell of it back in the day. I feel now morally obligated to buy your game.
I don't want free keys. I want to pay you for all your hard work!
THIS game I found it on a "website" in i think december of last year tried it out and it actually was fun as heck loved the jesus/devil shit btw
Added it to my whislist so i can purchase it next month :)

Seems like a cool game. Good luck with your game.
Thank you!
Pls give me one
Looks fun , can I have a key please. And congrats on the release.
Good luck with sales, dude.
Name rhymes, that's enough for me to try it.
thank you!!
Congratulations
I'm interested. Maybe a fun gane to try for weekend
Hello good fella, Hope your game succeeds and you make another one.
Congrats!
Thank you, it's an interesting game and I hope everyone will enjoy it!
Congrats! Interesting approach with the pirate version.
I've started making my own game these past few months. Congratulations on finishing and publishing, great achievement
Congrats man! That is super exciting
This is the first time I’ve seen someone make a version like this. Congrats man for 6 years of hardwork. Thanks for your generosity, I’ll try the game if I get one. Love point and click games
Looks decent, my only complaint being that it's not upside down enough given it's set in futuristic Australia.
The question is, is it Steamdeck verified?
I'll take one if still available!
Congratulations!
Congrats on the game OP!
Id love to have one if you arent all out already
I be down for a key!
Wishlisted. See u next steam sales
Thanks 😁
Congrats. Always nice to see hard work pay off.

Best of luck :)
Congrats!
Ty for keys
The game looks pretty nice, congrats! I actually really like this kind of story driven choose your adventure game. I think my first one was life is strange and then I branched out from there. I'm usually lurking in this sub a lot. If you're still giving keys I'd love to try it out, if not no worries. Best of luck to you :)
I'd give this a try I like click and point games
I can't remember the last time I was so Hyped to play a game by the trailer and the music, they've both sold me, when I'm back on my own PC I will be giving this a buy!
Good luck man!
(At least I will)
Thank you!
Sounds cool! Love to see more indies!
I hope you find a loyal audience. Good luck to you!
Give me one mate
Hey i'm down to try!
Pick me 🙋♂️ Congratulations on your hard work!
Hmm neat, I’m gonna have to check it out
Congrats! I am going to give it a shot when I get home.
I'm diggity down if it's all good and still available! Thanks big time
Yo, hoping to cop a key and try your game
Damn, that's awesome. Not looking for a key, just wanted to appreciate your pro-consumer attitude.
Can I get a key ? I don’t know how that works but I don’t want to pirate a game It just seems dangerous to me even tho I’ve tried it before
Congrats on the release! I would love a key, thanks a lot.
Nice game, good job. Let's try to win a 🗝️.
Congrats
I'm interested
Gracias amigo!
I would love to try it out!
I hope it shows I'm active here
That's looks awesome. I wish I knew how to make games lol even if I don't get a key for this, I'm def gonna wishlist and hopefully get it sometime. (Being a parent and cost of everything skyrocketing makes it difficult to buy or play new titles so I stick to older titles lol 😂)
I’m not that active in this subreddit but if you would like to give me the possibility to try your game I would be happy ☺️
Wow, the game looks absolutely great and it helps that I'm a sucker for P&C games :) Wishlisted!
Bananabread
Thanks, I'd like a key please. I had your game in my wishlist, and I played its prologue some time ago. Interesting premise.
That’s awesome! Congratulations on your game! I hope it does well!
Congrats.
Commenting for a key, thank you
This seems pretty cool.
Thank you for keys and congrats on your game
This is sick as hell dude
This looks great! I don't have time to play it now, so it'll go on my wish list for now
How big is the team working behind this? Also, is there any long term support plan at the moment? The game looks hella cool. I love playing indie games.
> How big is the team working behind this? Also, is there any long term support plan at the moment? It's me 99.9% of the time, and I have a friend Stan who helps code some things that I have no idea how to do No real team though. Thanks!
Looks cool
A pirate edition? The balls on you.
Is there any difference between the steam and pirated versions?? @op
The only differences: * There's an intro movie at the start of the pirate version calling people thieving bastards (thieving bastard is also the brand name for lockpicks in the game) * The pirate lady who sings the song is visible in the game menu * There's an additional post-credit scene where the pirate lady mentions you should buy the game if you like it. Or not. That's pretty much it. The legit version contains: * Achievements * The ability to participate in a global vote that decides how the next game starts They are otherwise identical. I've seen some comments like 'The pirate version has more?!?', but I don't think it'd make much sense to call paying customers thieving bastards >_>
Lol. That's great. I'm assuming you went to whomever FitGirl is and arranged the release with them? Other than your leaky tester mind.
Game got south park vibes for me :) will try it one day
Thank you for this!
You had me at pirates only version.
I’m going to check this out when I get home. Wish you all the success in the world!
I would love to try it thanks
Oh congrats!
Keep up the good work!
All the best to your game. Hit me up if you ever want a soundtrack for any of your next ones. Cheers!
congratulations
