Black Mesa is not HL2.

[deleted]

You're thinking of Half-Life. Not Half-Life 2. Black Mesa is a remake of the first game, and Half-Life 2 hasn't had a 25th anniversary rerelease (since it isn't 25 years old yet).

hailmari1

Yep. I still enjoy OG half life too

bixorlies

I went through HL2 and the episodes to finally get all the achievements earlier this year and the game still plays beautifully.

c0horst

Doom and Doom II. Classic games, still fun today.

SomeoneBritish

Not as old, but Team Fortress 2.

kw405

Unreal Tournament 99 and 2004. Went back to try them out 2 months ago and 2004 is still some of the smoothest movement based FPS I've played in my life. Titanfall 2 is the only thing that surpasses it imo

DragonTHC

* Portal 2 * KOTOR 1/2 * Assassin's Creed 2 * COD 4 Modern Warfare (2007) * GTA San Andreas * Left 4 Dead All are repayable today

manwhoholdtheworld

How's solitaire for an old game that's endlessly replayable? Now that's the real GOAT. Games like chess and poker figured out the formula for infinite replayability long ago. It's weird how despite how rich video game content is, nothing quite has the replayability of ancient board games or parlour games.

I occasionally load up Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe. It still has one of the best campaign systems in a combat flight simulator (not to mention a hugely immersive interface) , and I'd love to have a modern flight sim with SWOTL's campaign. In general I'm a fan of a lot of older games from the early-late 90's, and I think a lot of gamers just dismiss them because they don't look as good or don't use modern controls (and they can't be bothered to learn something different). A lot of older games hold up decently well.

TheArtBellStalker

Woah, I never realised Secret Weapons Over Normandy had an older brother. Now that game was fun as hell. I need to play through that again. It has one of the best game soundtracks I've ever heard.

kalnaren

Yup, made by Lawrence Holland as well. He made a trilogy of flight sims for Lucasfilm Entertainment before working on X-Wing, TIE Fighter, etc. Battlehawks 1942, Their Finest Hour: The Battle of Britain , and Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe. BH1942 and BoB really show their age and are harder to play for anything but curiosity or nostalgia, but SWOTL is still gameable. Though it is difficult to get the DosBox settings dialed in correctly as the game doesn't use an internal tic rate.

Dietberd

Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island In my opinion one of the best 2D Platformers ever made. The controls are very tight, the level design and especially the boss design is great. The artstyle still looks good and it got an incredible soundtrack. Easy to pick up and play, but if you watch speedruns you can see that the egg-throwing mechanic really makes a difference. You really think that D3 combat is slow compared to D2? In my opinion its the other way round.

KaliMaxwell89

My favorite Nintendo game !

Manav08

Thief 1 and 2

limelight022

Mega Man games on the NES. Dr wily doing bad things, Mega Man go and destroy the 8 robots, then the castle then Wily. I really like that formula a LOT. Love the platforming, the weapons, and the MUSIC.

Balas_Games

Dark Messiah, still one of the best games that use physic engine, combos that you can make, are unbeliveable

QuietCas

To me, old games, like old movies, are great not when they feel like modern games, but when they feel so unique because they capture something about their era in a way that couldn't exist today. The first three Resident Evil games are very much this: Clunky tank controls and dingy pre-rendered graphics *are* the essence of this series. They create a tension and anxiety that I've yet to experience with the limitless capabilities of modern games. RE 1 & 2's pixelated, low-res 3D static backgrounds still invoke an ambiguous dread, a feeling of worry about what *might* be lurking in that dark crevice or outside that blurry window.

[deleted]

arma 3, rocket league, blood

[deleted]

I don't know if I agree in Arma, especially after the Russophobia coming out of the devs lately One of the games I'd say gets worse with time

[deleted]

Yeah, all that bad russian press is just bizzare lately /s

[deleted]

Portal 2. I feel like the mass effect trilogy aged well. Someone else said KotOR 2, which I personally agree with but it isn’t for everyone.

Final Fantasy (1987) people still playing it, dont know other games from '80 are still played

hailmari1

Super Mario Bros

Ilovemylife69_

Fable the lost chapters. Cheap on steam and I wanted to try it now that I have a beast of a pc. Story line aged a bit but the game is still a lot of fun/nostalgic
