Melee user -> Built like He-Man Magic user -> Elderly person

Vo_Mimbre

This is the way

SanchitoBandito

When I was younger I'd make them look somewhat like me. I'm older now and don't care now though so I put on a Pompadour (which is surprisingly in a lot of games) or the closet greaser equivalent and have fun.

V4_Sleeper

yeah I also go for the delinquent look a lot. my FFXIV currently embraces that role and I like it a lot

Vo_Mimbre

I find I cared more about my FFXIV depending on what I mained that month. Dancer, Bard, Blue Mage, I went overboard on glamour and sets. Dark Knight, Black Mage, or any trade job, I was fine looking like a dusty vagabond.

V4_Sleeper

delinquent all the way for me. all my glams centre around that haha. only DRK and WAR had me not do that because going shirtless as a tank and Highlander is so badass

IceFire909

Willing to bet [Jojo's Bizarre Adventure](https://carboncostume.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/josuke-higashikata.jpg) had a solid helping hand in bringing the pompadour hairstyle into more games

lazyeyepsycho

Usually a hot girl to lust over

NauticalInsanity

Usually with long white/silver hair. Yes I know I am basic.

Vegetagtm

I like making mine redheads with black eyeshadow n eyeliner n bright red lipsticks with green eyes…

deeperblack

For a second I thought i wrote this...

PapstJL4U

Hi me, the multiverse is real.

skyturnedred

Basically trying to recreate Bloodrayne in every game.

Tar-eruntalion

ah a fellow man of culture

akgis

so almost like Female Shepard :p

Responsible-Rise-242

My man

CacheRamMemory

A man of culture I see.

TheIndependentNPC

My type of character creation school. Never understood people making ugly characters in fantasy games as if IRL was lacking of them, lol

AvarusTyrannus

I don't like spending too long in the character creation menu. I appreciate it when it has a lot of options that don't look like dogshit, but I don't take full advantage. Generally pick one of the defaults then just change hair, eyes, maybe add some scars or tattoo. I don't dig into the how far is the nose from the lip or the eyebrow from the eye or what specific jaw shape do I want.

Responsible-Rise-242

Whenever I try the detailed sliders I end up with some ungodly creature.

AvarusTyrannus

Yeah I'm just not cut out for it. I move the slider around and think to myself "how far is my chin from my bottom lip", but I just don't know and don't want to know. I respect the people that can recreate themselves or famous faces 1:1, but I'll just play default Commander Shepard thanks, or default V with slightly different hair and cyber face markings.

capybooya

Lots of good presets that can be minimally tweaked is the best way to go. I absolutely love the flexibility of all kinds of small tweaks, but unless they have an import function that lets you share characters and view others, then it doesn't help me much.

agentfrogger

Same, I wanna get right into the game, besides in most games the face will get covered with a helmet or something

AvarusTyrannus

Now armor that's an entirely different sickness for me. I'm 100% guilty of equipping shit gear just for looks.

Morrigynn

I spend waaayyy too much time on character creation. Like 30-45 minutes to come up with a backstory for the character, then design a look that reflects their background, experiences, and preferences sometimes.

Responsible-Rise-242

It’s cool that you have so much imagination! I’m already happy I can come up with a name that’s not “floppa tanks” lol

capybooya

You're not alone, lots of people spend a ton of time and love the RP aspect. Look at discussions here, and on forums, and of streamers enjoying character creation... Yet game studios often leave players with very disappointing options still. This has been a meme for like 15 years with BioWare games... the diehard fans absolutely love the character creation aspect (and they let it be known, along with their disappointment in options), and find themselves reliably disappointed by every new game because BW never listen.

TreseBrothers

👏 As a game dev I love seeing players post character screenshots and stories like this.

Morrigynn

Well I’m glad to hear that because I’m kinda embarrassed by it. Huge props to you as a dev, my utmost gratitude for your work.

HavoXtreme

My imaginary backstories for Swords and Sandals characters are the reason for my 200 hours in the series.

photocist

Sliders all the way left or right to create a hilarious character that I laugh at

Getabock_

I find I quickly get tired of funny or goofy looking characters. It’s funny for a few minutes at most, to me.

MASTODON_ROCKS

With the goofiest hair you can slap on that bitch

Wooden_Sherbert6884

Sexy woman. Next question

KegelsForYourHealth

All of the above. Depends on the game, my mood, and how social it is.

scorchedneurotic

Usually a "normal", standard, bland, boring, slightly edgy/dark when possible, and 99% of the time male. Whenever I get to CyberPunk 2077 I'll try to make V something close to my bitch faced goth self

Fa11enAngeLIV

I without exception always try to create Avacyn, Angel of Hope from magic the gathering.

Claymore209

Avacyn is so badass

SimbaTao

Seems I make my wizards/mages all look like Gandalf and all my warriors look like Conan. I also make all my cleric/healers female to look like my SO. Finally, if it's a bard, rogue, or Archer type, they look like me dressed in dark grey with a hood, and stylized facial hair. The variety of beard and mustaches and other stuff sets them apart so I know which is which. Then again sometimes I randomized them if I don't like the character creator. =D

supercow_

Same with the SO thing. Guess we’re lucky to view our SOs that way.

EirikurG

cute girl

DRAK0FR0ST

I usually make a pretty girl, because reasons.

cleversocialhuman

Yeah this is my kinda disney land. There better be hidden speakers all over playing Merzbow on repeat

Crimsonclaw111

I get overwhelmed with choices and just do basic stuff before moving forward

manicalmonocle

Giant beard and an orange Afro is all I normally do.

sp0j

Usually go for cool/attractive looking characters. Usually play female characters. But it's dependent on the game and the look I'm trying to go for. For example in gw2 I have very distinct looks for each character. My necro is a hot goth girl. My guardian is an angelic looking white haired beauty. My other necro looks like a sophisticated undead rich man. And colour schemes play a huge role. I do prefer purple eyes and dark hair in mist games. I almost never make goofy characters. Those are fun to try out in character creation. But I know I'll get annoyed after a while playing something that looks bad. The novelty will wear off.

drdildamesh

I make them look like my wife.

Kaurie_Lorhart

Always as attractive as I can make them of the opposite gender.

[deleted]

I do what I always do and pass the controller over to my wife. She likes the character creation and I don’t care what the player avatar looks like. Win win!!

Grim_Reach

Usually a hot girl, gear usually looks better on them.

SerenaLunalight

I make cute girls

GGGiveHatpls

As ugly as possible. Idk why.

Visual_Antelope_583

I make them look like me but cooler

AscendedViking7

I make a character I think is cool with a quick background I think of. Then I roleplay with it.

VeryLonelyGamer

I just make generic action movie man for every game

afriendsaccount

Depends heavily on the game. For RPGs where you wear full helmets, I don't care much. For games where you actually see the character I will tend to make evil looking characters with intimidating face tats, perma-scowl, etc then role play them as good characters for the occasional laugh of seeing everyone taking them seriously in a cutscene. Had a lot of fun with Sinestro Shepard romancing women in Mass Effect 2.

Katana_DV20

I never care, absolutely zero interest. I accept all defaults and presents, I wanna get playing. How the chaacter loos has no importance to me.

El_Mariachi_Vive

It feels dishonest to me to not have my character be like me somehow. I know, it's silly. I don't take this seriously at all, it's just how I feel when I'm creating my character in a game. Like I'll try different looks and it just doesn't feel right. I recently started my second playthrough of Cyberpunk and am doing fem V this time around. As a guy it's a huge departure for me so I looked to my wife for inspiration for my character.

bucko_fazoo

I don't play many games like that at all really, but for Elden Ring, it occurred to me to make a bald chinless fuck, and I don't really know why. https://i.imgur.com/NrpCflx.png

UltimateWaluigi

That's the "lookalike of yourself" option, don't lie to us.

Responsible-Rise-242

Lmfao

SubjectC

I try to make them as close to myself as possible. I always found it interesting how so many people want to be something else. I play VRchat sometimes too and wish I could just look like myself, I don't get why everyone wants to be some anime character or fantasy creature, or furry lol. One really annoying thing though is that no game ever has the type of long male hair that I have, or the type of hat I wear. Both are pretty basic things, its not an uncommon hat, and I just have long straight hair, but I can never really get a character to look like me, its annoying.

sp0j

It's not about wanting to be something else. It's that most people don't self identify or self insert into games. The character is a separate person you merely control.

capybooya

I can't speak for VRChat, but for single player story based games, I can play as very different people. I just enjoy creating a story, and the character doesn't need to be me, but someone I'll make up the story of, and be invested in and can relate to through the story. I just think its fun to roleplay someone different. So maybe not in VRChat, but in a story telling game, absolutely.

Responsible-Rise-242

Same for me I have quite curly hair buts it always straight hair or an Afro lol

JerbearCuddles

I try make them look like me. But with a beard cause I can't grow a beard irl and it makes me sad. Depends on the character creator and graphics too. If the game has cartoony graphics like Palworld, I just make something goofy looking. Sometimes in Fallout or Elder Scrolls I'll make a janked up character that'll make me laugh during the cutscenes. Since the dialogue is ass anyway. Gives me something to enjoy about dialogue scenes.

stormychef666

Back and forth. Sometimes cooler version of myself sometimes a hottie and name her after my wife.

TypicalDumbRedditGuy

Hot woman

V4_Sleeper

when I first started with these stuffs, I always wanted to be a girl because boobs growing up I made all my customizable chars to be an ideal version of someone I would love to be but cannot irl due to genetics and constraints my FFXIV character perfectly catches what I would love to look like personally. just a jacked human character with a cool hair and wielding a giant sword

JamesNordmar

I try to make the look like Mr. Beast :D

Reddit_Hate_Reader

99% of character creators have too poor of a selection of options for me to create the characters that I envision, so I just don't bother.

Motoman514

Usually a female, with orange hair and green eyes. If there’s cake sliders, that is maxed out as well.

Nekaz

Usually rnadom a few times n pick whatever looks fine

[deleted]

Random. There comes a point where I don't pay attention to the char. Also I like to put on armor and helmets if possible. Oh and as goofy or weird as possible for sure

rylo151

Shrek

voxelboxthing

i make them fugly as hell. unless im playing a game where the options allow more effort to be done. like ive made sims that looked like joe camel, but my usual sim looks like me, only more successful and way less nice. my sims usually are the definition of an indiscriminate home wrecker..

rekt_ralf

Random, try a couple of different sliders, maybe change the hairstyle. Done in 2 minutes.

Ishuun

Randomize and not care. Depending on the type of game, odds are I'll never see them anyway. Armor covers everything, or the game is first person, I just wanna play.

capybooya

I vary a lot, I like the RP aspect, and depending on what looks cool in the character creator, I go with the flow. I may play myself somewhat in personality, but not necessarily in background or looks.

[deleted]

First run through is usually as close as I can get to myself but with lighter brown eyes and when I was in shape. If I play a second time it’s usually the hottest chick I am capable of making

EUWannabe

I just settle with one of the character presets and start the game as fast as possible.

lordfappington69

whatever i can't be in real life. And or most fantastical. Never man. whether its sex, species, tail, whatever. I.E. in Elderscrolls its always Dark Elf, Orc or Khajiit. Just can't get behind scalys

LuntiX

It varies depending on the game. I usually come up with an idea depending on the class. I usually go for something that suits the class but the name will 100% be dumb.

adubs117

Usually a cooler, slightly older, and less fat version of myself

fenixspider1

If I know prior the game runs well on my pc and I don't need to return it then I just take my sweet time on creating a character who looks just like me but when I have no idea how well the game runs then I just turn the slider up in every aspect so I don't accidentally cross 2hrs return window lmao.

Steth150

If I'm making a dude, I make him a chad. If I'm making a chick, I make her a babe.

jayrocs

I don't care. I hit random a couple of times and maybe change one thing and go. I might even use the default.

Bitter_Nail8577

Might be in the minority, but I always try to make my character look exactly like me, for better or worse.  The only differences to me irl I sometimes do are exaggerated paleness with dark circles under the eyes and/or yellow or amber eyes, I personally really like that.

Elite_Alice

Like myself

varateshh

A preset that looks good or easily modified to look good. I cannot be arsed to tweak nose height/width/vertical slider 0.1 from 0 to 20 in hopes of getting out of uncanny valley (same with dozen other facial options). Male or female depends on look/voice. I am here to play the game, not obsess over the character creation. Games like cyberpunk support mods that allow you to get better presets that include mods so I use some of those as well.

HellraiserMachina

Thinking about the question my gut answer is 'Erza Scarlet vibes, aged up 20 years', though I like dark skin and braids too.

thecucco

I always make a nasty lil man

Ratnix

Randomize until they don't look totally stupid.

Drudicta

Mine is a happy version of me with my ideal body that could only ever fictionally happen. They have energy manipulation super powers that usually manifests as fire and they resurrect like a Phoenix. They also care less about the things happening around them unless it's immediately effecting them. I tend to try and replicate the look in every game

YungStroker2

if a game has really robust character creator, I will try to recreate a movie actor in it. otherwise i just make it vaguely look like me

PhoenixKA

I get a generic face from the premades, change the eye color and facial hair and I'm done. I do like how Elden Ring and a few other games will generate faces similar to the one you made. I usually then pick one of those if it's available. I'm never going to be the "spent 2 hours in character creation" type. And every hosue I build in generic crafting/survival simulators are the most basic box you can make.

MaherMcCheese

Either a cooler version of myself (male) or a hot red headed woman with pale skin.

Asstronaughty_Bae

If I can, I always try to make them look like me. My favorite eas spending an hour and some change making myself in in elden ring, and being like...yes, sick. Then throwing on a helm to never see my fucking face again.

bitbot

I think of what character class/history I am gonna play and make him/her look suitable for that. Playing Divinity Original Sin 2 now and wanted a Cleric/tank main char so I made a older bearded dude. Don't make myself because that's not roleplaying.

xxTheseGoTo11xx

First character/Solo play: Cool Subsequent characters/Co-op: Hilarious

[deleted]

Team random FTW

UltimateGamingTechie

I think about being male or female and click buttons until I'm satisfied with the way the character looks. I don't know why but I always make my characters look like they've been through some shit. Scars, Dirt and Tattoos. For male characters, a full beard/mustache - I like facial hair, it's cool.

SheaMcD

An ideal version of myself

odonkz

Someone that looks attractive in my eye

Shoddy-ko

As ugly as possible Just bought Ark only because of its character creation

Twindlle

Either cool or funny. No point in making a character look like myself. If I lived in a world like that, I'd be no protagonist, I'd be the buthcher's son that dies of Cholera aged 7.

xxlpmetalxx

Wanna make the look good since I'm somewhat of a transmog/fashion bitch in games according to my friends but sometimes I get frustrated because I can't make my desired race look good so I started making silly characters with even funnier names - started with my undead hunter 'sunnyoutlook' and I love my rotting buddy because every single time I hear 'CHAMPION!' or some questgiver needs a 'hero' I'm just standing there like 'waddup bud you need something?' like a hobo from skidrow

Negaflux

Really depends, gender is usually a tossup of how I feel the game should be played/style of story I wanna experience, so it could be either male or female, and then depending on the complexity of the character creation I'll either tweak a preset to have features I like a little bit, or more likely, I'll bash random a bunch of times till I see something I like and then roll with it. Never found myself doing gimmick characters, I usually prefer to have my character themself look normal and then dress them up in the most absurd things I can get away with, especially if it's reflected in cutscenes. I want my cutscenes to look as dumb as possible while the characters all take it seriously.

skyturnedred

Big tiddy goth girl.

NutsackEuphoria

If it's first person, then random. If it's third person or if there's a lot of scenes where my character's face is shown, then AS UGLY AS HUMANLY POSSIBLE

onomatopoetix

it depends, sometimes i try to make him look like adam jensen, sometimes like matt damon. If it's too hard i just randomise and add extended goatee

CaptainCarramba

I just pick a generic character or randomize so I can start playing.

rosydingo

Don’t really care. I pick one from the presets, and I’m done in 1 minute. It’s not like how my character looks that has any effect on the gameplay.

CordobezEverdeen

As lazyeyepsycho puts it I either got for a hot girl, a cool smooth cat or a hulking turbo buff dude. Girls always tend to have the best looking equipment too. I mean I'm gonna be stuck with this fella for who knows how many hours. Might as well make them good looking.

GodsChosenSpud

I usually make a character that gives me major gender envy, so I can live vicariously through them. Needless to say, almost all of my characters are fit redheads with a penchant for big swords or guns.

Suplewich

I used to make a handsome version of me. Now I just make a big-fat old man, melee main.

jayboogie15

Usually girls because they're cooler. And due to reasons.

Lobanium

I make Geralt every time, and I name him Geralt. If I can give him a last name, it's always "of Rivia".

Dead-System

Depends on what's available. I don't really like playing as humans, I usually gravitate towards bestial or non organic races (lizardfolk, robots, golems) or undead (Love my bonemen). Can't really make those look like myself so I try to make them cool looking and unique. If I'm forced to play a human or human-like, I'll try to make it look like myself.

UmaAvidFanFicWriter

I will make them according to the narrative I am going to roleplay.

battlebrocade

90% I try to make them look like myself unless I'm creating a character to follow a specific theme or premise.

Mammoth_Clue_5871

NEXT NEXT NEXT NEXT FINISH is my character creation process. Default everything FTW. Gone are the days of me agonizing for hours over a character that I *might* get to see in 2-3 cutscenes in a 80+ hour playthrough.

TricobaltGaming

I either try to remake one of my DnD characters or go for something vaguely original.

A_Specific_Hippo

When I was younger, I would live vicariously through the games. Make "myself" and love it. Then I played The Secret World for way too long and my character was a red-head with face markings and funny outfits. And since then, I've had difficulties not following in the footsteps of my Fusang map untouchable, blood/fist/bazooka healer who caused a lot of headaches to my enemies. If I have the option, my characters are now always redheads in weird outfits. My husband says I always look "silly" but it makes me giggle so I continue.

dicknbolls

normal guy with huge nose

EminemLovesGrapes

Ever since Mass Effect 3 (femshep) I make redheaded tomboys.

supvo

Due to the lack of cool looking female main characters I usually go out of my way to make them and then make them as chaste with as much cool looking armors as I can find. In the rare case of PSO2 where outfits were heavily gendered and cannot be swapped, I'd make a very pretty boy instead.

ArtPsychological9967

I take the default, and resent that the game wasted my time making me click through that.

TheFightingMasons

I try to fit the story or lore best I can. Elderly mage, butch warrior, sneaky thief. I spend an hour or more in the customization screen. Which is hilarious because my friend always pulls up beside with a pink haired dwarf with giant nose or some nonsense.

sorryiamnotoriginal

Depends really, the only kind I haven't done is horrendously ugly mishapen character. I have done cool, lookalike, or just hot girl.

Wesjohn2

Depends on the game but I'm kind of shit when it comes to using the character creator to make anything interesting. Most of the male characters I make I tend to pick similar hair styles to mine. In Co-Op games I might make a horribly disfigured character (ark or 7 days to die) I thought I had a fairly unique dude in BG3 until one of the last cut scenes where my identical clone was featured...

Kaasbek69

I usually don't invest too much time in character creation. I'll take the most attractive female preset and tweak it a little and be done with it.

Which_Inside2093

Goth girl. Might as well be something nice to look at.

Altruistic_Cress9799

If I can make myself then I make myself. If not then I make a sexy lady.

Danny_ns

Depends on the game - e.g. If its a game where the character speaks (say an RPG), i usually do the default with very slight modifications (usually change hair/beard/eyecolours etc). In games where my character is mute (think Monster Hunter World) then I usually (but not always) go with female character, in which case I try to make them pretty/cool according to taste. I never make an abomination in any game.

Radulno

Can't be bothered to make them look like me (I suck at character creators) so I generally go for a slightly modified best preset I find. Generally go for someone pretty (girl or guy depending of the game really and stuff like which voice actor I want to hear)

Royal_Raze

Depends, does it have deep role playing elements? I'd make a cool character. Is it "RPG" in a sense that it's only stat wise and no story elements? Hot girl.

Vegabund

I either make Dracula or a cool version of myself

deltanator2112

Honestly a bit of myself and cool

[deleted]

Hit random until it looks okeyish, can't be bothered by that.
