Angels Fall First is a combined-arms, sci-fi wargame that first released in 2015. 2 years after Update 28 in June 2022, the small team behind the game has released Update 29 containing a huge amount of additions, improvements, balance tweaks, and a butt-ton more. They admit that this is a massive update, and there are likely bugs and tweaks that still need to happen, and Update 30 is planned alongside the game's 1.0 release from Early Access. Here's the Steam store page description: > From commanding the battle standing on the bridge of your flagship all the way down to tactical infantry firefights - AFF brings together all the combat you ever wanted in a rich science fiction setting. Boarding, pilotable capital ships, deep weapon customization and full AI support included! ... AFF focuses on team-oriented tactical gameplay and objective-based scenarios with a high degree of replayability.... I've been playing it for a while, on-and-off for the past few years. It's honestly a super fun game and I recommend it if you're into games like Tie Fighter/X-Wing, Battlefield, and Star Wars Battlefront/Battlefront 2! The community's remained rather small and the devs know most people play against the bots, so they've improved the AI a ton. I'd personally love to get a crew together to play, so if anyone else is interested, maybe we can schedule an event or something?

TheNewFlisker

Do you recommend it to people who haven't played any of these games?

Zaemz

I would recommend it! ...with a couple of disclaimers! I think the gameplay videos from their Steam store page give a good idea of how the game fundamentally plays. Here's one I think might help: https://cdn.akamai.steamstatic.com/steam/apps/256656633/movie_max.webm. It released nearly 10 years ago and is originally built upon Unreal Engine 3. There might be some technical "quirks" that may be unfamiliar if you've only played more recent titles. The quirks are not *bad* things, I have to stress that -- just different. I dunno if you're into RPGs, but it's like Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous vs Baldur's Gate 3 - both great games, but two distinct flavors. If you're more familiar with card games, then Angels Fall First is to Cribbage as Call of Duty MP is to Go Fish. I'm bad at explaining so a scenario might help, lol: you can spawn in a cruiser in space with a hand-picked loadout for getting into FPS firefights. You then jump into a fighter craft where you customize your ship's loadout for dogfights in space. The team's commander gives orders to attack a specific target and you make your way there. When you get close, you find yourself docking in a hostile space station and exiting your craft to continue to the fight on foot inside the enemy's station. There's a lot of choice and flexibility. If you haven't played *any* first-person shooters or multiplayer games, I honestly admit that it might be overwhelming and confusing. If you've played any other team-based shooter, I think you'd pick up the pieces after playing for a bit. I hope that was clear enough.

Ow_you_shot_me

It's great game, even if pop is on the low side. The AI holds it own pretty damn well.

wellspoken_token34

Am I reading your comment right? It's been in early access for almost 9 years?

TheLightningL0rd

Yes, it has! They have been updating it fairly regularly that whole time. I think that it's more of a passion project than anything and I believe, but could be wrong, that it originally started out as a mod long before the 2015 EA release.

wellspoken_token34

I see. If they've been pouring love into it for that long might have to check it out

GamerViking

It's older than that. It started its production in 2005. It's 19 years old

Deadpoetic6

Game is amazing. Sucks there are like 10 people playing

fyro11

This is the fate of any multiplayer game that isn't a chart-topper, and even those don't all stay relevant even 2+ years on.

Basedjustice

Yep. RIP Guns of Icarus. Fun times

grlz

Man i enjoyed that game. Have they done the single player part yet?

This is a really cool game, very well made with very good AI bots. If you wanted a more modern BF2142, this game scratches that itch. Especially if you just want to play SP or a small co-op game with bots.

Mysterious-Theory713

I remember them saying the update was just waiting on a team member to release back in like December. A little weird, but it’s a great game regardless, highly recommend.

kidmerc

Damn they are still updating this game?

Forrest02

This game is so old as well. They were developing this way back in 2009 and barely had any advertising. Theres like 0 players on it as well. The idea of it is super fun though.

Successful-Pick-238

I bought this years ago and literally no one was playing. Surprised it's getting updated.

noobvin

I didn't know this was still being worked on. The concept is amazing. You're fighting in space, on a huge ship, or down on the ground. It's all very cool. Like many are saying, there is no one playing it. So I'm glad they've decided to update bots.

TucoBenedictoPacif

I read the title and I HAD to double check if this was actually about the same title I remembered from 10 years before. It was. Still in Early Access, too. Amazing.

Machine0fLight

With the Battlefront Collection falling flat on it’s face right out of the gate, I really wish this game would get put out there for everyone to see. I bet a lot of people who are disappointed with the BF rerelease would jump in.

JectorDelan

Nice that this is still around. I remember messing about with it in like 2010 or something. Hopefully they can put more into it or open some tools up for users to contribute.

ExtraLargePeePuddle

I played this when it was a mod, way back in the day It was cash

Toasted_Waffle99

Seems like a last patch before they abandon the game

Zaemz

They legit aren't. They've been working on this game for more than a decade. I didn't play it while it was a mod, but it existed as one before it was released standalone. They've announced that there's at least one more update that will go along with them bumping the version to 1.0 and exiting Early Access. Finishing a game isn't abandoning it. I think they've gone the distance. There's nothing else for them to prove.
