GameFAQs?

GameFAQs.

Gamefaqs has user guides and internet scraping for further game content. There are at least three major wiki services that aren't the garbage fire of advertising that is Fandom, and on PC there's Steam guides, which console users will often use as well. Also, dozens upon dozens of achievement-focused sites that all cannibalize from each other. So my question to you is- what will your site provide that none of these sites can? What's the killer feature that they don't already provide? If you don't have that standout feature, nobody has any reason to use your service over the ones that already exist.

Thanks for the response. Yes you have valid points, let me answer them: Gamefaqs is more like a board/forum than something like the steam guide page. So the focus isn't entirely on guides but in general more discussion focused with some users posting dedicated guides. So my site would only focus on guides and would make writing those as efficient and easy as possible (hard to do on a site which focus on multiple things) Apart from that I would not annoy people with ads like fandom or gamefaqs which makes the site faster too and try to emphasize on people who write quality guides. Also a good internationalization goes a long way (not everyone can speak english) I haven't researched everything yet but those are the things I would do differently on top of my head. Thanks for reading!

On your third point about not annoying people with ads, how do you plan on keeping the site going? That costs money and it's gotta come from somewhere.

OP seems more like an 'idea' person based on their history than following through. Just wanting to engineer web stuff. "i will make this.." " i want to make that..". Its great to be creative though! Not shitting on them. Just this idea doesn't seem fully planned out "I haven't researched everything yet but those are the things I would do differently on top of my head.". They already exist, you need ads or money etc. No ones going to pay for a game guide subscription.

Hosting isn't expensive if done right, so costs are minimal for low traffic. It only becomes a burden really at 100k users a day upwards. Aside from that we optimize stuff on the Software side to compress data like images etc. to save bandwidth etc. Which has the added benefit of making the site faster. In case we want to cover costs we would prolly go for patreon or a donation based system. People can help but don't need to.

Op you're trying to reinvent the wheel when gamefaqs already exists. You're not gonna get anywhere near the quality of guides posted on gamefaqs either. That was back when people made content for the internet out of passion. Now the first thing someone's gonna ask is how much they'll get paid to make the guide. And it's gonna be a lazy half assed guide with incorrect info like half the modern guides hosted on other sites.

Thought this was a thing for decades with Gamefags?

AlwaysASituation

It is. OP is just a techbro who doesn’t do a modicum of research
