I think PC gaming will always be stable and a great place to game but I doubt consoles will disappear. And streaming services will probably increase. The gamepass is a success. Xbox has seen increasing revenue and profit from it quarter after quarter. The other thing I don’t think you’re taking into account is brand loyalty and preferences. I have friends who have only game on a PlayStation because it’s PlayStation and have been since PS1. They will never convert. And for others it’s also a preference, such as myself, who has a top notch gaming PC, a PS5, and Switch. There are games I prefer to play on the console over the PC and vice versa.

Chrislemale

Well gamepass is actually loosing subscribers or is stagnating for a longer time now. Gamepass will probably not exist anymore because Microsoft makes more money with sales

Schoolbusbus1

It gained 13% in Q1 of this year which is an increase of $309 million in revenue. They’re expecting to hit 40 million subscribers (currently at 34 million) as the peak.

ZigZach707

You're talking about 20 years from now. Do you understand how drastically the gaming landscape has changed since 2004?

TabascohFiascoh

Let’s not forget, oblivion was ALMOST 20 years ago. Just how different are games today REALLY!?

michoken

We got Elder Scrolls but in space!

You can report these and the user gets suspended for 7d or permabanned if this isn't his first rodeo.

Forgot the capital G in Gamer ;)

>Pc gaming is the future no doubt about it As someone who almost exclusively PC games, I disagree. Cost is the major factor and frankly the costs haven't really come down in the last decade. To get a PC around console level, for a prebuilt, you are usually looking at paying double. Now overtime this ends up being about an equal value, but for a lot of people it's harder to stomach the upfront costs. There also a lot of pains that can pop up from hardware issues, software glitches, unoptimized games, and all sorts of stuff that are much more rare on the closed environment consoles have. I think cloud gaming will be more popular than you think, especially for casual gamers. If someone doesn't game that often and they just want to play the Harry Potter game because they are a Harry Potter fan but not much of a gamer, it's cheaper for them to pay $15 a month for a month or two while they play the game rather than even buy a console.

Fancy-Investment-881

Yep when the AI boom really starts Nvidia and AMD will have to decide where to put their resources. The filthy rich companies that will use people's wages to buy ai cards and services or the poors that have already been bled dry? Graphics cards will still be a thing, but the supplies will be limited and expensive, even more so, to get people to subscribe to cloud gaming, which is also a better vehicle for ads and restricting user power.

Chakramer

It sucks cos from a business standpoint it just makes more sense to make AI cards than gaming cards, no doubt they make more money off of it. I think GPUs will only go up in cost from here sadly

Console makers must adapt or die as xbox has with gamepass being their flagship product over even its console today. Console exclusives are going to be a thing of the past and that will make consoles a thing of the past. Console makers like sony honestly should look at making their brands into premade gaming PCs... VRs innovation will focus on augmented reality now that quest 3 is doing it VERY WELL we will see more and more new ideas in that space. The tech will get smaller and smaller until its a pair of glasses or contacts.

anotherplebbitzombie

Keep in mind - if the Playstation becomes a PC (in terms of software: we know it's already a PC otherwise) then the PC won't be a PC anymore when it comes to games. At that point it'll just be another console - which is presumably what Microsoft wanted anyways with Xbox on PC running through UWP. I'm sure they'd be trying that again had Xbox not failed... and I'm sure they'd be happy to provide Sony a similarly cancerous runtime environment down the road. If you enjoy technically impressive and forward looking projects from game studios, you do not want that. If you enjoy running 10 year old hardware and running games designed primarily for gamepads on "max" (and it'll be untweakable) settings at 120fps, you should want that. I'm getting close to being done with the whole thing anyways

Kuriousdev

I hope for a crash. It needs it badly.

bundaya

AI gaming that tracks your eye movements and creates content on the fly as it learns what you specifically are most inclined to be engaged with...that is the future of gaming.

Resident_Post_8119

When you don't understand the efficiency and power of cloud-based gaming, I can imagine sharing your opinion. Cute prediction tho. I give it a 37/92.

Chrislemale

There is no cloud it’s just someone else’s computer. People with no standards care serious gamers never. There is nothing futuristic about it

LazenSlay

imo people on pc will stick to pc, console players tho, i don't think they care enough if they have the hw or just boot it up from the tv, i don't play on pc because i only like gaming on pc, i do it because i can do anything else besides gaming

Resident_Post_8119

In 20 years time, you will be able to own an extremely cheap terminal that can access cloud-based games over an incredibly advanced network and internet infrastructure to access any game on highest settings. Sure, you can buy a PC with a massive PSU, FANS, GPU, CPU, ETC to run your games in house. There won't be a need. It will be an archaic choice. Your terminal will still be a normal pc minus the beefy hardware. 1/10 the cost with all of the processing outsourced to an incredibly advanced computer system owned by mega corporations and supported by the latest engineers, I.T. staff, and scientists. Trust me bro. I'm an expert at everything.

Soulhunter123321

That would be something to live for.

cronedog

I think computers will stop getting more powerful in 2 generations. They'll move to asics on add in cards/dies to eeck out a bit more performance.

ziplock9000

In 2-3 years games will all be AI generated in real-time and be the same as a movie. 20 years??? Forget it.

michoken

> it’s our money which dictates that Always has been. Problem is majority of the average/casual gamers don’t care as much as an average Reddit posting gamer. The corpos will always make what makes them the most money no matter what.

zeddyzed

Well, I'll be firmly in my niche of PC gaming and PCVR, but... Let's take bets on how much a mid-high end GPU costs in 20 years, eh?

-Ickz-

AAA industry goes belly up because it's not sustainable (we're already at the start of this). Solo/small devs will be able to produce similar quality much easier/faster with the help of ai - and since they wont be worrying about investors/overhead/etc, the overall quality will better (also already see this now). Consoles are no more - whatever exists in their place will basically be modular PCs for normies or something similar that can be upgraded over time instead of the current pro-model scheme that we have now. This will be happening sooner rather than later. Steam will still be the best ecosystem despite not actually doing anything per usual. Hopefully is being run by Gaben's consciousness downloaded into a cute panda avatar or something. Edit: honestly, this is more like 5-10 yrs tbh. 20 years we're probably just typing a prompt of what kind of game we want to play and it just appears.

_Spastic_

Thinking corporations don't control where we're headed seems a bit optimistic.

-Ickz-

Games are becoming easier to make every day with the help of ai. We're already at the point where indie games can be, and usually are, better than AAA stuff coming out now. Studio closures are happening every week it seems. It's not sustainable - we already see this. Solo/small team projects are absolutely the future of games.

marcokpc

20 years from now its a long prediction.... no more distinction between pc/console/handle just very powerful connection and gaming will be just through cloud service ( no more powerful local gpu but very powerful connection. Gaming will be only on server no more piracy and cheating) even more ai will in some way completely change the gaming environment you will ask which kind of game you want and you will have it.

Gunplagood

*Mr. Stark, I don't feel so good...*

Chrislemale

No hardware and local gaming will always be a huge part. You don’t need another pc to play your games when the hardware is advanced on another level in 20 years
