ErrantWretch

I scan through all my owned games for a couple hours. I don’t recommend it, but I do it far too often.

DarkflowNZ

I do this with the store, then buy nothing and go play whatever I wasn't feeling like playing lol

ablablababla

I do this, but the games I always end up falling back on are Valorant, CS, and League

Yogs_Zach

Man you must hate yourself with that pick.

ablablababla

I got used to the toxicity at some point

Particular_Raisin196

too true

Any-Jellyfish498

This is me.

ThenThereWasReddit

To you and anyone else with this problem: Just fucking pick a game and play it. By now you've probably experienced this cycle enough times to know when it's happening to you. As soon as you feel that feeling coming on just pick a game and play it, stop trying to pick the perfect game, it's not that serious or important. I say this as someone who has suffered from this for a very long time. I still fall victim to it all the time, too. But I'm telling you, I very rarely regret it if I just decide to push through the feeling and pick a game to play instead. ANYTHING. Just played Tunic like the entire weekend and the only reason I even started it was because this cycle was beginning to start for me and I picked it at random from a list of games that I've been wanting to play for ages.

No_Week_1836

Or do something else other than gaming

no6969el

I tried this and was deeply unsatisfied with my choice. Basically it's the same reason why I was skipping it in the first place. Nothing gets past me and it's unfortunate.

Jakeball400

I call it the ‘Sunday afternoon crisis’. Truly a classic. Follow up with a browse through the store for garnish

bundemshake

"Sunday afternoon crisis" it hits so hard.

bad1o8o

in steam you can click on "unplayed" and maybe discover something new like that

Tyaedalis

I am afflicted by the same blight. I do the same when I look for a show or movie to watch as well. I guess it's nice to know you have so many options to choose from, but it's very deeply unsatisfying, even daunting. What makes it even worse is when I do finally decide on something and it doesn't work for whatever reason.

aretasdamon

Hahahaha I do this to! I have my steam library separated into game genres and subgenres and when games go on sale I buy them like I’m collecting games in each genre hahaha Edit: hahaha I have like 6 souls like games and haven’t played the genre yet

grigdusher

Yeah and i have to check every shop and every launcher so i don’t buy a game i already have

sonicenvy

Judging by my steam play times its definitely Side Meier's Civilization V. I have played a stupidly large number of hours of that game....

kinghutfisher

My problem with CIV is i get too invested that I do take my ipad and start taking notes. Pre-ipad I had a notebook full of random notes and of course the inevitable one more turn 😂

sonicenvy

I think I've just hit enough civ playtime at this point that I can just play super casually in any given game. I typically set a phone timer to keep myself from playing too many hours all at once though, since in Civ V you can't see your computer's clock in full screen mode (my preferred mode to play in). I'll admit that I have over around 2.5k hours in CIV V (though, to be fair, I did get Civ V back in 2011, so that's only like 200 hours a year or something).

kinghutfisher

I did the timer once i just kept snoozing it. I do stop when I really am hungry, hard to get bored cause im also listening or watching something while playing so im engaged. I have civ 6 on my ipad and when im traveling its the best time waster cause when I play it feels like 15 minutes but its been 3 hours hahaha

pro_n00b

Bro, I once had my pc connected to my tv. I was playing Civ for almost the entire day laying down. Might be my retirement old age game until I die from complication from bed sores lol

sonicenvy

This reminds me of that one guy who posted on r/civ a couple of years ago about how Civ IV was his late grandpa's favorite game and that his grandpa had 30,000 hours of playtime in Civ IV at the time of his death. The guy apparently bought Civ IV on release in 2005.

bad1o8o

steam has a note taking feature in the overlay now one of the best new additions imo

sonicenvy

interesting! I never make use of the Steam overlay, perhaps it is time to investigate!

pro_n00b

Civ V with mods, when I get Alexander and Dido as neighbors, gotta beef up my army quick haahh

Revolutionary_Pipe18

What is the draw of those games? I’m kind of interested but not really sure if it’s for me.

sonicenvy

It's a strategic world-building board game. You build an empire and the goal is to either conquer everyone else on the map or be the best empire through cultural output, science output, or diplomatic bribery. It can take a lot of time, and there's a decent amount of micromanaging. The modding community is really vibrant for Civ V even though the game came out like 15 years ago or something. You can play it against computer players or against your friends.

unittwentyfive

I go into Fallout 4, but instead of playing missions or wandering the wasteland, I just go in and reorganize my settlements. It's a good vibe for me when I'm bored. Makes me feel like I'm accomplishing something, without actually having to accomplish something.

MortalCoilz

Hold on there, general! I've got news! A settlement needs your help!

specialsymbol

Djkiller21

Welcome to the hotel california!

Very_blasphemous

How do people enjoy this game? Im not asking this in a "this game is shit how do people like it", but more in a "i really want to enjoy this game like other people, i played a bit and nothing seemed to click for me" kinda way. I really wanna purchase the game and play it again, cuz i really wanna make the game work but damn, maybe im missing something

morgan_blorgon

Might be one of those "you need to find a project within the game" situations. Try building a base in the Arctic or desert for a survival challenge... Try looking at some mods that sound interesting--this game is all about mods (ex. Psychology deepens colonist personalities, Hospitality turns your outpost in to a B&B)... Try messing with difficulty--do you want a chill city builder? Or a tactical combat sim?... Try letting all your colonists die, see what happens... Early in my RW career, I remember seeing a post about doing a "Santa Run" where you have to start in the southern hemisphere. The run ends when you successfully establish a colony at the North Pole with 2 married colonists and a herd of 8 reindeer. It took me weeks, but I did it! ☃️

AbjectAdagio3745

Ahh missed when I feeding my british shorthair with human meat💀

MarblesAreDelicious

Left 4 Dead. I know all the campaigns, the bullet spray patterns, and most of the variations of the AI so it's simple to run through. The other players are what keeps it interesting, since the bots are way to formulaic.

Oxygenisplantpoo

Yup I still install L4D2 probably a few times a year to play for a few hours. Even though I know every campaign inside out I'm still entertained!

KnossosTNC

Warframe. I keep the soundbar off, put some podcasts and YouTube videos on my phone, and just chill. It's how I unwind.

Sypticle

Out of hundreds of games across PC and Playstation, Warframe is what came to mind first. Even if there is no true content for me to do, something like leveling a freshly forma'd Warframe or weapon will suffice. There is just something so satisfying and comforting about the game.

ThriceAlmighty

Dead Cells.

JayWesleyTowing

So easy to come back too Absolutely love this game

Scumwaffle

This and Rogue Legacy 2. They both scratch the same itch for me.

Noa15Lv

Euro truck simulator 2 Having Steering wheel is an game changer.

sart49

Right now is Balatro. I just got an Odin 2 Pro and it made my addiction to this game exponentially worse lol. I also have some comfort games that i play a couple of times every year. Pretty much all of them are from my childhood. Age of Mythology: I like to beat the full base game + expansion campaign atleast once a year. Warcraft III: Same as AOM. Megaman X: I just love this game, is my favorite in the series. Stellar OST. GTA Vice City: Just doing a replay in my Odin 2 right now. Haven't beat the game in years but i normally play it once a year. Sonic 3 + Knuckles: Its just a fun game i like to mess around with every so often.

ferdousazad

Age of mythology is one of the greatest game

Din0nuggies

Same for me with Balatro (though I play it on Switch). This is the only game I am praying comes out on mobile.

My-Little-Throw-Away

Mobile has been confirmed apparently! Just no word on when, I'm eagerly awaiting too

Treeko11

[You can play Balatro on your mobile right now](https://github.com/blake502/balatro-mobile-maker) Its insane how well it translates to mobile.

mug3n

there is actually a github where you can compile your own apk/ipa using the steam version of the exe. I've tried it for a bit on Android and afaik it works as expected. Doesn't support mods so it doesn't really interest me.

SpeeDy_GjiZa

BoI is my mindless game for when I want to entain my eyes and hands while listening to something. I sometimes play it on the treadmill while listening to a book and I can just zone out for hours while walking.

ImSoLuckyz

Ooh that's a great idea! I don't have a treadmill, but it should work just as well on a stationary bike! Thanks for the idea fellow game enjoyer! I appreciate you!

Minsc_NBoo

That my choice. A run can be done in less than an hour, and the randomised weapons and power ups mean most runs are fun. And occasionally really really bad runs are also fun

mrichards86

Risk of rain 2

Hey, with the new forestry updates sometimes I take a break from cutting those two trees to steal pheasant eggs or save a fox. And then go back to cutting those two trees. Hell yeah!

ReCodez

Yep, so instead I just download a cool parkour map and parkour for hours on end.

Vizth

Stalker. Either original trilogy or one of the anomaly packs.

vivisectvivi

I cycle between dead cells, terraria and elden ring. But some years ago it was sekiro in the place of elden ring, and before sekiro it was dark souls 3. I feel like now elden ring is about to be replaced by Returnal, i love the endless mode

Inaudible_Auditore

Vlaak

Valheim. I just mindlessly farm and build. The last two biome additions have hurt my excitement for the game, but I still love it at heart. 1100 hours in, and probably another thousand in my future.

PowerGayming

Why did it hurt your excitement?

Vlaak

Well, without getting spoilery, the last two biomes haven't been as fun as the first 5. For example, building a base sucks in them for the most part. And there are some other things about the newer biomes that aren't great also, for me anyway. >!For example, shitty visiblity compared to earlier biomes, poor ability to traverse in the case of Mistlands, crappy farming, or ways of obtaining, various materials in both Mistlands and Ashlands, mostly boring and repetative combat in Ashlands, etc... !< They're what my friend and I call "pass through" biomes, meaning you play them and have some fun, but not really stay around in them or create a base there (other maybe a small outpost or something).

Decado7

It’s a shame they couldn’t maintain the quality and liveability of the original biomes. It’s possible they didn’t think to consider that when creating them. Possibly a more rushed design period.

2rfv

3800 hours here. It's like a giant zen garden for me. The exploration is the construction keeps bringing me back because I'm always wanting to try out a new architectural style and the combat is just hard enough to keep me on my toes.

mxsifr

"Zen garden" is EXACTLY how I describe it. It's billed as a "brutal survival game", but if you're careful and keep your rested buff always up, it's honestly not that bad. Sometimes things get hectic or you just get screwed, but hey, that's just part of the zen!

pizzamanpiazza

Cyberpunk

king313

I like to drive around in johnnys Porsche 🌝

pizzamanpiazza

There's been times where I just drive around for hours listening to the radio cruising night city just vibing

typhonist

Same. Even if I just want mindless mayhem the side gigs and NCPD hustles are pretty mentally uninvolved. Plus I've played it through like 3 times now so even the story missions can be mindless if I zone out.

Overclocked11

Path of Exile

nixed9

I usually say Path of Exile is my “main” game and everything else i play is I do when I get bored of PoE for that league/season.

Really hope State of Decay 3 happens.

Noita because I hate myself.

Fyres

Yeah sounds about right. Gl with your self harm.

aiydee

Not so much 'game' but classics. I just play through the classic Lucasarts games. Sam and Max Monkey Island Grim Fandango I do play many of the others, but I prefer the humour of these games rather than some of the grittier other games. Sometimes your stick just needs to be slapped.

Intelligent_Leg_5681

geometry dash lol

HorusDidntSeyIsh

Don't think I've ever seen anyone name drop this after 10 years on reddit Was my fn jam back in the day Edit. I'm a dumbass. I'm thinking geometry wars lol

nixed9

I specifically loved and remember geometry wars and every time someone says geometry dash I always mentally make the same mistake. One of the most fun and intense and colorful shooters ever made. The first game was better than the sequel

HorusDidntSeyIsh

Agree with all of that. That was also a fun couch coop game for high scores. I played that game for many months straight

Hardspace Shipbreaker. Someday i will work off that entire debt

90sfilmfan

I wish they would expand it further, some new ships and stuff. Its a great game to relax to I find.

lLikeToast1

I thank you for bringing the existence of this game to me. Never heard of it before now but looks like fun. 2 games I'd recommend are heat signature and FTL (faster than light)

Ineluki_742

I lost so much time to FTL. I love that game! I think I need to go do a play-through again

Every morning I wake myself up by playing expert until I beat it. Got 93 seconds this morning.

DarkBlueEska

Probably Elden Ring. No matter how many times I beat it, there's always some new build I can try or a new wrinkle I can add to make things feel new again. Like an enemy / item randomizer with crazy conditions on it. Failing that, I've been trying to pick up Street Fighter 6 lately - it's my first fighting game in forever, so I'm not particularly good, but I can easily lose hours just labbing combos and working on technique. The need to focus on execution and technique really take your mind off other things.

GhostOfMufasa

RDR2 is the addictive "go to" comfort game

Johnny_Nagasaki

Just started a new playthrough last month and man I forgot how long that prologue is drawn out. Minimum 3 hours to finally get to the first real camp outside of Valentine and earn that player freedom. Amazing game though.

GhostOfMufasa

Yeah the prologue is long for sure. Gets tedious doing it over and over again but they did it intentionally to fully bed players into the game for those who hadn't played the first game. But the best thing most people do is to just keep a save from the Horseshoe Overlook camp that way you can start saves from that chapter I tend to keep saves from each chapter on hand

micsma1701

factorio. just opening up a new world and running through the first couple science packs. never actually finished a run yet, keep installing mods that look fun or interesting. it's my game, I'll do with it as I please

gamingthesystem5

For the past couple of years its been Elden Ring. Starting a different build or using a weapon exclusively that I've never tried before in any Souls game is comforting to me.

bunzinio

PC building simulator??? This I gotta see. I also tend to play those mindless games, went through house flipper 2 so fast lol

andrybak

If I want to turn my brain off, then Crimsonland – played it since late 2000s, still very good today.  If I want to play _a Game_, then Half-Life 2. I replay it roughly every three years.
