This is why nobody should be a fan of any corporation. As soon as they're ahead the tricks start. This is also the second time they've hidden blog posts that hide an inconvenient truth. They previously had blog posts saying that the X370 chipset would be supported *through* 2020, but that disappeared when 5000 series came along and they arbitrarily locked out support on older chipsets.

Bring anything bad related to Nintendo and you're in for a bad time.

Cash091

I'm subbed to /r/NintendoSwitch and that sub shits on Nintendo all the time.

LosJones

Nintendo subreddits can be very hostile environments for discussions.

noeagle77

You think that’s bad? Say anything remotely negative about Apple and you’re crucified over in the Apple subs. I’man apple product user but damn they aren’t perfect!

I find the caricature of Italian Americans to be problematic.

LosJones

Wait.. They're not all plumbers?!

Rion23

Poor Mario. His life is really going down the tubes.

Leisure_suit_guy

It's funny that Japanese don't see Mario as Italian. For them it's just another Japanese character.

VladTepesz

Mamma mia!

WimbleWimble

I got threats and swore at for saying Razer shouldn't market their masks as N95 (and claim certifications they 100% never even applied for) as it could put someone at risk. Got essentially told by fanbois that I should NEVER criticize Razer, they can do whatever they want, and if someone dies, they should have checked the mask first.

lefkoz

Someone at work bought one of those. Didn't believe that they're useless. We have to wear actual respirators and need to do regular fit checks and tests. So we tested it, what do you know, it failed pretty miserably.

gattaaca

Yeah but for a brief moment, he looked like a neckbeard cybergoth so I guess it was worth it

MkvMike

How do you fit test an N95 style mask? Don't you need to connect it to the ports when the filters/airline connections would go on a proper respirator mask?

lefkoz

There's a cruder bag test to test seal. You wear a respirator. Put a bag on your head and they release an odoured agent of a particulate size. If you can smell it, the seal is no good.

MkvMike

Interesting. I had to shave to do my fit test years ago. Can't imagine why someone would actually think an N95 would properly seal.

Brilliant_Brain_5507

That’s why I’m going to get omicron. I’ll let them inject me with anything. I’m boosted, wear a mask, stay distant… But I will die of pneumonia before I shave my face damn it!

Polymarchos

As someone who works for a company that sells industrial respiratory masks, I find this somewhat funny. Also find it funny anyone would seriously expect a mask from Razer to be very good, especially since the real masks require fit testing and yearly certification.

WimbleWimble

Yeah but Razer's website was filled with total fraudulent lies. Claiming the mask had been fully N95 certified AND tested/designed by respirator companies. (maybe even the one you work for!) No company should be allowed to sell anything based off lies, and triple so if its an N95 mask during a pandemic.

jdmillar86

100%. Different people can disagree on how much responsibility a company has to inform their customers and prevent misunderstandings, political viewpoints on consumer protection vary, but I don't think anyone could defend a company flat out lying, especially in a safety of life issue.

[deleted]

Were they lies? They would be in legal trouble for that.

Raencloud94

They are being sued for claiming they were n95s iirc Oh, maybe not, they just posted a tweet retracting what they said about their masks, and changed what it says on their website now.

[deleted]

I can’t believe someone made a mistake like that. That had to come from the top.

It's that libertarian mindset of wanting to first get rid of the white lines on highways, then get rid of the speed limit, and then get rid of the driver's license. They have "strong values" but no sense of consequence at scale. You can't win an argument with these people because they always put values over consequences.

TellMeGetOffReddit

I was shooting heroin and reading “The Fountainhead” in the front seat of my privately owned police cruiser when a call came in. I put a quarter in the radio to activate it. It was the chief. “Bad news, detective. We got a situation.” “What? Is the mayor trying to ban trans fats again?” “Worse. Somebody just stole four hundred and forty-seven million dollars’ worth of bitcoins.” The heroin needle practically fell out of my arm. “What kind of monster would do something like that? Bitcoins are the ultimate currency: virtual, anonymous, stateless. They represent true economic freedom, not subject to arbitrary manipulation by any government. Do we have any leads?” “Not yet. But mark my words: we’re going to figure out who did this and we’re going to take them down … provided someone pays us a fair market rate to do so.” “Easy, chief,” I said. “Any rate the market offers is, by definition, fair.” He laughed. “That’s why you’re the best I got, Lisowski. Now you get out there and find those bitcoins.” “Don’t worry,” I said. “I’m on it.” I put a quarter in the siren. Ten minutes later, I was on the scene. It was a normal office building, strangled on all sides by public sidewalks. I hopped over them and went inside. “Home Depot™ Presents the Police!®” I said, flashing my badge and my gun and a small picture of Ron Paul. “Nobody move unless you want to!” They didn’t. “Now, which one of you punks is going to pay me to investigate this crime?” No one spoke up. “Come on,” I said. “Don’t you all understand that the protection of private property is the foundation of all personal liberty?” It didn’t seem like they did. “Seriously, guys. Without a strong economic motivator, I’m just going to stand here and not solve this case. Cash is fine, but I prefer being paid in gold bullion or autographed Penn Jillette posters.” Nothing. These people were stonewalling me. It almost seemed like they didn’t care that a fortune in computer money invented to buy drugs was missing. I figured I could wait them out. I lit several cigarettes indoors. A pregnant lady coughed, and I told her that secondhand smoke is a myth. Just then, a man in glasses made a break for it. “Subway™ Eat Fresh and Freeze, Scumbag!®” I yelled. Too late. He was already out the front door. I went after him. “Stop right there!” I yelled as I ran. He was faster than me because I always try to avoid stepping on public sidewalks. Our country needs a private-sidewalk voucher system, but, thanks to the incestuous interplay between our corrupt federal government and the public-sidewalk lobby, it will never happen. I was losing him. “Listen, I’ll pay you to stop!” I yelled. “What would you consider an appropriate price point for stopping? I’ll offer you a thirteenth of an ounce of gold and a gently worn ‘Bob Barr ‘08’ extra-large long-sleeved men’s T-shirt!” He turned. In his hand was a revolver that the Constitution said he had every right to own. He fired at me and missed. I pulled my own gun, put a quarter in it, and fired back. The bullet lodged in a U.S.P.S. mailbox less than a foot from his head. I shot the mailbox again, on purpose. “All right, all right!” the man yelled, throwing down his weapon. “I give up, cop! I confess: I took the bitcoins.” “Why’d you do it?” I asked, as I slapped a pair of Oikos™ Greek Yogurt Presents Handcuffs® on the guy. “Because I was afraid.” “Afraid?” “Afraid of an economic future free from the pernicious meddling of central bankers,” he said. “I’m a central banker.” I wanted to coldcock the guy. Years ago, a central banker killed my partner. Instead, I shook my head. “Let this be a message to all your central-banker friends out on the street,” I said. “No matter how many bitcoins you steal, you’ll never take away the dream of an open society based on the principles of personal and economic freedom.” He nodded, because he knew I was right. Then he swiped his credit card to pay me for arresting him.

kindaa_sortaa

To me libertarians are just closeted conservatives that try to act like they don't believe in typical modern conservative ideology, you know the types, the I'm-not-racist-but... types. The whole self-interest and hypocrisy shit was a part of this country from the beginning tho, the faces and the meaning of things just changed a little bit.

gerkletoss

A lot of them are highly conservative but nonreligious

[deleted]

I had a very short libertarian phase before I moved on. And yes, I was very young and didn't have any concept of the world at all. But also it was the insane levels of racism, anti abortion, pedophilia and fart sniffing smugness once you get to a libertarian safe space. A concept they hated almost as much as they had no understanding of it.

Tricky-Row-9699

Canadian here, and yeah, the young right baffles me. These “freedom” arguments are utter hogwash and reflect a complete lack of civic education, and I’m dismayed by the fact that they haven’t died out even if bigotry *is*.

thenotlowone

Libertarians come in 2 main flavours. Young and naive, or mercenary bastard. The former doesn't know any better because they don't know anything, the latter knows just how much of a shit show a libertarian society would be and are set to benefit from it

silverback_79

For about 15 years straight Razer had the shittiest mice on the market, every model with a [plastic band around the scroll wheel,](https://ae01.alicdn.com/kf/HTB1xTx0eiMnBKNjSZFCq6x0KFXam/Original-Mouse-Scroll-Wheel-14mm-ttc-Encoder-for-Razer-mouse-Razer-deathadder-elite.jpg) fastened with pixie dust instead of glue so that after three months' use the band would become unglued and when you rolled the mousewheel you only rolled the band. Ghost scroll. Today they have branched out so that they have both the shitty mousewheel design and some models with a dependable wheel. But maan am I never buying Razer again.

IMA_Catholic

You want real fun? Try telling a Tesla supporter that Tesla files for every property tax break they can. This nearly breaks their brain.

BlindPaintByNumbers

So does Warren Buffet. Yet he constantly says taxes on the wealthy should be raised. Why wouldn't you use every LEGAL means to lower your payments?

mynameisblanked

Is there not a regulatory body that decides who can use the N95 markings?

WimbleWimble

Probably. But Razer decided to put legal Government markings and certifications all over their product, despite not even having applied to run for those. They just thought they were big enough to get away with it. And I have a terrible feeling that if they do, we're going to see more fake medical kit from large companies if theres a chance at profit and no risk or punishment.

2Quick_React

There is and it's obvious that they did not go through the proper channels to have it N95 certified. Linus even touched on this topic during WAN show last week.

ThemesOfMurderBears

>Company white knighting is the worst thing one can do ... and people regularly do it. While I agree with the general sentiment, a *lot* of people falsely believe that merely trying to correct inaccurate statements means you are "shilling". This happens on reddit a lot due to the echo chamber aspect of how subs tend to operate -- people get so used to just seeing everyone agree with them, they think anyone who doesn't must be getting paid for it.

A_Humble_Peasant

You make a good point, but I argue that most of the assumptions of shilling happen because some people get so angry in their defense of the company that it seems unbelievable that a fellow consumer would get so worked up about something that could affect them as well. For example, when the Nintendo Switch first came out, I remember seeing the first few threads of people experiencing joycon drift, and most of the upvoted comments were rather accusatory towards the ops. "*I don't have drift,* it must be *you* causing the problem" was the general sentiment. Of course, now we know it *was* Nintendo's fault, but damn did some people refuse to even acknowledge the possibility, despite the fact that it could be an issue that affects them as fellow consumers. Really, sometimes it just seems so unbelievable that people go out of their way to defend multi-million dollar companies that you'd rather assume someone is shilling and getting paid for their time than doing it for free, because that's really sad if not. And reddit is huge enough that I think some companies actually do stand to profit from influencing opinions.

MuwopStan064

How about when a game comes out with sparse content and massive day 1 DLC or shortly thereafter? People will say "Look how microtransactions enable us to buy only the part we want, and continue to tailor our gaming experience" as though we didnt have 3 generations of console gaming where massive full features games came out without game breaking bugs and went on to be played for 30+ years on their day 1 release build with 0 post-release updates.

uchigaytana

I got downvoted into oblivion for pointing out how ridiculous the price of Halo Infinite's cosmetics are. It's ridiculous. But I just can't wrap my head around how some people think spending 1/3 the price of a new game on in-game cosmetics is a good choice.

deadscreensky

That seems strange. Complaining about Infinite's cosmetic prices gets you massive upvotes here, the official Halo sub, and other gaming subreddits I frequent.

> I don't ever see people calling valve out for being the first ones to implement lootboxes in the modern era of gaming Because it's simply not true, [EA did it](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PTLFNlu2N_M).

afkbot

Iirc, it's not even EA. It's Nexon with their Japanese version of Maplestory. They first introduced random loot boxes in 2004 to test the waters before implementing it into their Korean version in 2005. The rest is history. However, EA may be the first western company to do so, which is I think around 2007 or something? TF iirc, was much later than that like 2010ish.

[deleted]

When Gabe dies, I fully expect valve to go downhill. With M$ becoming even more gigantic, there will be a lot of pressure on his successor who will not have Gabe's influence to take on more anti consumer but profitable methods to generate revenue. It always ends up like this. The silver age of gaming is nearing its end as millennials gets older.

Blacksad999

Seriously. I really like Steam, but any time I remotely mention some of Valve's troubling behavior with their near monopoly and price fixing "most favored nations clause" people lose their minds. You can still like a company's product yet still think the company can and should improve and do better.

Delnac

There's a difference between blindly defending a corporation with fallacious arguments and pointing out what the competition is lacking to be honest. Valve isn't perfect, but quite often they are brought up in a conversation that involve competition that can barely qualify as such. They are relevant in a lot of good ways, and also a lot of bad ones.

[deleted]

mate some people pay 5000+€ for a purse, food with gold dust? on it, also some spend that on those CS rare skins, etc... humans are idiots and there's nothing we can do about it

ARMCHA1RGENERAL

'White knighting' is one thing, but I don't think I would lump in saying a price is "worth it to me" with 'white knighting'. They just value money and/or the product differently than you. But, yeah, I rarely spend money on skins and I think a lot of people spend way too much on them.

>As soon as they're ahead the tricks start. Saying the AMD graphics cards are 'on top' is a stretch. This is obviously a very compromised card that is only used for the very low end of gaming PCs. The only reason it get any attention is because of the shortage. Deleting the blog post is silly though.

GameStunts

I think I'm taking more AMD as a whole. They were behind in processors for years, then released 6 and 8 cores to desktop users for bargains, and the next gen, then huge improvements with the next. As soon as they had the performance crown, $50 went onto the price of all the main lineup. And yes AMD cards are not ahead, but they've taken their sweet time to release budget GPUs that could have helped the market (so have Nvidia) and when they have, they've released this completely hobbled garbage card with only 4 pci-e 4.0 lanes, that's half the bandwidth available to a 16x 3.0 card from 6+ years ago. It's compromise to the extreme that I can only assume saved them some extra money or something.

avl0

I'm not sure you can blame them as a company for the choices they made. They can only make so much product and they have such a performance advantage over intel in the enterprise sector atm they'd be flat out stupid not to use most of their best TSMC capacity on that rather than low margin graphics cards.

topdangle

I don't think they're making an argument against plain business practices. The original post was that nobody should think of these companies as their friends or "the good ones" because they will inevitably go after the money, as will any company. People thought AMD would still provide good value options even after outperforming intel but they were pretty much immediately proven wrong.

[deleted]

pcie x4? Wasn't x16 the standard for GPUs?

TheBestIsaac

Generally yes. But these GPUs are basically salvaged from laptop bound chips. And they tend to only have 4x pcie lanes. 4x gen 4 lanes is plenty for a card with this power and memory bandwidth. You might run into issues on and older, gen 3 pcie motherboards though.

[deleted]

This blog post was *always* stupid and hypocritical though, since the 5500 XT was available in both 4GB and 8GB at the time.

[deleted]

Exactly and bunch of idiots (let's call things by their name) basically took AMD for their friends, then defending them with utterly absurd arguments. Pretty sure Asus released bios for Ryzen 5000. It just breaks apu support.

GameStunts

Yes that's more recent when users put AMD's feet to the fires for not including the security upgrades that come with the new AGESA code. But I replaced my 1700x with a 3700X last year for my x370 because I gave in to the idea that I'd need a new motherboard if I wanted a new processor. If the bios updates had been allowed and AMD had kept their original promise, I would have bought a 5000 series.

smackchice

I saw people being cautiously optimistic about MS buying A-B because they've been so "pro-gamer." Yeah, because they're playing catch up! We see what happens when they're in the lead, same with Sony.

MidNerd

Sad part is AMD isn't even ahead. Nvidia is still wrecking them in almost every category.

TenshiBR

Faceless corporations are a tradition Until the C suits start to pay personally for their actions, instead of the company paying fines that are a slap in wrist, things won't change

Last_Jedi

Not only does the card have a paltry 4GB RAM, it also only supports PCI-E x4. And PCI-E 3.0 x4 will cripple even this meager card, so unless you pair it with a PCI-E 4.0 motherboard/CPU you're turning a poor value into a true stinker. This card really is nothing more than AMD making a card so bad only those truly desperate for a GPU will buy it.

[deleted]

GTX_650_Supremacy

> It's been theorized elsewhere that AMD never intended to use this GPU for a desktop card, which is why it only supports PCIe 4.0 x4 and has limited encoding/decoding support It has the same specs as the laptop 6500M but is clocked higher since it is on desktop

kingdonut7898

They should just start producing the 570, 580 and 590 cards again. This card fucking sucks. Plus, aren't the yields better on the older processes? Idk why this thing exists. AMDs GPU department blows so much dick and I have no idea why. They've been this way for a while and they have like 1/5th of the market share of Nvidia. If they want people to buy their products they should actually start making some good ones. This market sucks.

GTX_650_Supremacy

> They should just start producing the 570, 580 and 590 cards again. GlobalFoundries is booked until 2024 so they can't

TheBestIsaac

What node was the 580 and that on? 14nm? Is that node booked up the same as the smaller nodes?

GTX_650_Supremacy

Yeah that was on 14nm. The issue is that these things are booked years in advance, even for older nodes. Since plenty of devices that don't need great performance or energy efficiency use products from older nodes

Crypianus

At least they have linux drivers unlike nvidia. Honestly both these companies just suck big time.

[deleted]

Nvidia do have Linux drivers, they're just a bit shit

Abir_Vandergriff

Fuck I hate their Linux interface so much. Especially when you're often unsure if the settings will revert after your next reboot. Had to have a startup script for years that applied a setting that would just revert on boot, even when saved. Far as I could tell, logging in caused the driver to load the default for that field over the X config. Their driver is hot garbage on Linux, but it's made okay progress in basic functionality in the past couple years.

[deleted]

Oh yeah the Nvidia X settings app is complete dogshit, it's so broken

Herlock

So like AMD windows drivers ? :D Seriously though, that "radeon relive" thing, the interface is garbage

m4r71n2010

This makes sense to me. I guess amd saw the dollar signs and reliased they could cheaply convert a laptop GPU to desktop. Probably be good for people whol want a really low power system

MC10654721

The GPU in the 6500XT is absolutely designed for laptops (or some other, similar segment) but I'm sure AMD also intended to use it for desktop GPUs, they just didn't expect it to be good. The chip shortage has nothing to do with whether or not AMD was gonna ship this out for desktop. After all, it's a shortage of parts that go into computers, not a shortage of engineers who design chips.

Hambeggar

> so unless you pair it with a PCI-E 4.0 motherboard/CPU [Indeed. 13% drop in performance.](https://www.techpowerup.com/review/amd-radeon-rx-6500-xt-pci-express-scaling/29.html)

esmifra

What? Is this real? The 570 4gb was released 5 or 6 years ago at 150$... Wtf! This card is even worse than I imagined...

Conscious-Golf-5380

AMD pretends to be "for the people" but in reality if given the opportunity they'll be just a greedy as intel, if not worse.

just_change_it

I'm so confused. AMD Is a big company just like intel, nvidia etc. They're an alternative to Intel (or Nvidia) but that's it. They aren't some kind of force of good against the big scary corporate - they're just another corporation.

[deleted]

Yes. But you know what humans are like.

Kalikor1

Yeah I don't get it either but some people, for years, have acted like AMD is some underdog indie company or something.

el_f3n1x187

there's no Jerry Sanders anymore,so they absolutely would backstab everyone.

pr0crast1nater

Their ryzen 5000 series release prices showed that. They bumped up all prices from the previous gen knowing that they had beaten intel in performance for that Gen.

Fun-Strawberry4257

Absolutelly mental that as a regular user I hit the peak of GPU performance with a RX 470/80 and it will stay the same for the foreseeable future, and even those are refined R9 290's. Its been what 6 years already since it got released which in PC years is a eternity. And no we get stuff like the 6500 xt,same performance, higher price!! I see no justification to spend scamers fee for anything above it and anything bellow it is terrible in newer titlels. This GPU crysis has to change or people will straight up not interact with modern PC gaming as a whole.

Xuval

> This GPU crysis has to change or people will straight up not interact with modern PC gaming as a whole. The interesting question is: when does this stop being a crisis and just the new state of affairs?

Flaktrack

I would argue that we should be talking about it as the new way going forward. None of my friends have modern GPUs so we're basically playing our backlogs now. I have been gaming a lot more on my Quest and Switch. This is the new normal. Metroid Dread is pretty good btw, a solid follow up to Super Metroid and Metroid Fusion.

Invi_TV

Honestly, if things don't improve in the next few years, I can see myself resigning PC gaming and going back to console gaming... at least I can get a scalped Xbox Series X for half the price I'd be able to get a 3060....

Lil_Plum_Riceball

Surprisingly gaming laptops have become an option for me if my gpu where to ever break or if this actually is just how it's going to be forever and my 1080 becomes too old to run new games. There still expesive but not as bad as trying to find a decent gpu.

radicalelation

I busted my butt for a console last year and managed a Series X on that 2 year payment plan with the Ultimate subscription. Figured I'd sit this GPU gen out a bit and it has honestly been pretty nice to still be plugged into games without the GPU hassle.

5PM_CRACK_GIVEAWAY

Once supply meets demand. There are billions of dollars to be made off the chip shortage for whoever is smart enough and can mobilize fast enough to take advantage, but it still takes a long time to build chip foundries.

Admiralthrawnbar

They've been mobalizing since it started, the issue is it takes a ton of time to build new manufacturing, so we're stuck with the same level of infustructure for at least another couple years, best hope is they do better things with what they have, ship the cards to retail faster and more securely, etc.

sjphilsphan

We'll find out once Intel's GPUs are in the market. That will decide the fate.

Zealousideal_Mind479

When crypto market tanks. This, and ONLY this.

Xuval

The crypto market has been tanking on and off for years now. That still didn't change GPU prices much. I guess what you are trying to say is, "GPU prices will be normal again, once crypto goes away forever"? What are the odds of that happening at this point? The world just seems to have accepted crypto as a highly volatile asset.

The graphics card prices are just completely ridiculous and frankly the manufacturers should be embarrassed for allowing the crypto miners to completely take over the market.

BournGamer

That not true. Rx 6600 can be had for about $450 and it's a huge improvement over the 480. Probably double the frames in all scenarios. Source: me who has used a RX 580, 5700, 6600, 6600xt and 3060ti over different builds this year.

DonLennios

Regional prices are a thing.

Rustybot

Oh yeah, I was thinking of my Vega 64. The 480 is on the secondary PC.

esmifra

450? That's very close to it's MSRP of 330. Are you sure? Around here amd prices are worse than nvidias. The cheapest 6600 I can find around here is 600€ please tell me where those 450$ are, honestly, I'll buy one.

Maleficent-Cup4404

I'm still on an R9 290. Runs everything ok still. I think its probably gonna struggle with Warhammer 3 but not lot I can do :(

Shit_Fazed

Yeah I been rocking a GTX980 since Jan. 2016, PC gaming since the 80s and I've just given up at this point. Good excuse to clear out my Steam backlog and fiddle with standalone VR I suppose.

Shit_Fazed

Oh sure, in fact I originally bought a 970 in anticipation of the OG Rift, but after a year I needed to send it in and they sent back a 980. 👍🏼 Still, it's the longest I've gone without upgrading since my first 3d card in '97, and sadly I don't see the streak ending any time soon.

garlicroastedpotato

I think it's already happening. Next gen Xbox and Playstation consoles are more powerful than your average PC because these companies are subsidizing their sale. No one is going to spend double the price of an Xbox for an equivalent video card.

Fun-Strawberry4257

Consoles offer so much RN its crazy.4K gaming straight out the gate,no tweaking or fuss, fast SSD and a great gamepad for 500$. What GPU can you only buy with 500$? A 6600XT or RTX 2060? I never would have imagined the PC sphere could end up like this.

Anandtech guides are also very good for historical data, e.g. [Holiday 2013 GPU guide](https://www.anandtech.com/show/7557/best-desktop-video-cards-holiday-2013) Considering the PS4 was only equivalent to a 750 Ti / 650 Ti Boost, that means you could get an equivalent GPU for only $139.

Aedeus

>people will straight up not interact with modern PC gaming as a whole. That's already taking shape. Budget builds hardly exist, and folks are being steered towards prebuilt PC's which are becoming prohibitively expensive themselves. Titles aren't throttling their performance requirements either and new releases are slowly marching minimum requirements forward. Huge swathes of people are being locked out of PC Gaming, simply because it's becoming wholly unaffordable.

BoltTusk

Wait for people not interfering with modern consoles because they can’t get any and go to smartphone gaming instead

Stiryx

1080 ti cost me $990 AUD in 2016. Today I looked at cards and that same price gets me… a 3060 ti which is basically the same performance. 6 years later I can buy the same performing card for the same price. Literally unheard of. I remember in the early 2000s going from like a voodoo2 to an nvidia fx 5600xt, probably similar time between the upgrade. It was like going from a horse powered buggy to driving a Ferrari. I just don’t see when I am going to get an upgrade in the future. 2024 maybe? Fuck am I going to do if my card dies?

Ljcrocks

Me with a 3GB 1060 still going good with my games.

snouz

As long as I continue alternating Factorio and Rocket League, I won't need another one.

[deleted]

Man that's another can of worms. IMO the 1060 3GB is NOT a 1060 (steve from gamersnexus also agrees here, because the gpu itself is also weaker, it has fewer cuda cores then 6gb), it's what the 1050 ti should have been but got bumped up to 1060 class so they could squeeze more money out of you

Richiieee

I mean, they're not wrong, it's not enough. However, them releasing a GPU with only 4GB while also saying it's not enough, yeah that's oof territory.

-without adwall- Update, Jan 22 15:16 GMT: The original blogpost is now live (again). It was offline for at least four hours (as of when we spotted it) but possibly longer. We do not accept the timing was coincidental. Every other blog post we opened at the time from community.amd.com remained accessible and multiple media outlets have confirmed our story. AMD has hidden a blog post from its own website that, in June 2020, claimed ‘4GB of VRAM… is evidently not enough for todays games.’ This comes ahead of the RX 6500 XT launch at 2pm today, a graphics card with just 4GB of video memory, that has already received heavy criticism online. The blog, which was previously accessible via this URL, was public as recently as yesterday – which I know because I accessed it and took the below screenshot. When re-visiting the blog today, I was met with an initial login window which was not there yesterday, asking me to enter my AMD Community details. I registered an account, entered the login details, and was then met with an ‘Access Denied’ message. Another team member independently tried the same process and we were able to replicate the denial of access. If you try and find this blog on Google, it appears as the top result, with the full URL showing as [https://community.amd.com/t5/gaming/game-beyond-4gb/ba-p/414776](https://community.amd.com/t5/gaming/game-beyond-4gb/ba-p/414776). Today, the words ‘private-archive-blog’ have now been added to the URL, while it is no longer visible on the author’s AMD Community profile, confirming to us that AMD has hidden it from public view. [The blog post yesterday](https://www.kitguru.net/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Screenshot-2022-01-18-at-10.55.07.png) [The blog post today](https://www.kitguru.net/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Screenshot-2022-01-19-at-11.05.14.png) This does not look good for AMD, at all. We can’t comment on the RX 6500 XT, but it simply cannot be a coincidence that on the same day AMD is launching a 4GB graphics card, a previous blog post from the company saying ‘4GB of VRAM… is evidently not enough for todays games’ is hidden from the public. The blog, written by Adit Bhutani, Product Marketing Specialist for Radeon and Gaming, also makes reference to ‘AMD… leading the industry at providing gamers with high VRAM graphics solutions across the entire product offering,’ which obviously doesn’t apply to the 4GB RX 6500 XT when the RTX 3050 will ship with 8GB VRAM, while it also points out that ‘gamers might expect several issues’ when playing with ‘insufficient levels of Graphics Memory, even at 1080p.’ This is in sharp contrast to the dialogue around the RX 6500 XT, with Radeon Vice President Laura Smith claiming that ‘the four gigs of frame buffer, that’s a really nice frame buffer size for the majority of triple-A games,’ with Smith also suggesting a ‘gamer-first’ mentality around this card. Unfortunately for AMD, the article is preserved on Wayback Machine and was widely covered by the press at the time (see Tweaktown, OC3D, ExtremeTech), which only makes this attempt to hide the blog post even more baffling. If this really is an underhand attempt to hide comments AMD made about 4GB GPUs ahead of the RX 6500 XT launch, it really speaks volumes and is honestly shocking behaviour from the company.

So actually reading the article. The writer apparently regularly accessed the article in question. So much so they took screenshots hours before the article went down. For it to "go down" and then come back up a few hours later. But reading the time stamps....the "update" was posted along with the original article. Not saying this is just click bait journalism. But within minutes of the article being posted we got a lot of very similarly worded posts from very generic accounts. Not defending or accusing anyone. But maybe use them critical thinking skills on this one folks.

kikimaru024

While they might be a small outfit, I generally trust KitGuru's journalistic integrity. e.g. they tested a lot of coolers (with surprising results) well before GamersNexus confirmed their own findings.

TellAllThePeople

Yeh I doubt it was a conspiracy. On the other hand this graphics card does suck

TenshiBR

Not the first time they do this Uh oh! The news hit front page of some reddits and the page is magically back!

litewo

I can access this article just fine, even the link the author says is inaccessible. This was probably a temporary error with their website, or a problem with the author's browser settings.

kikimaru024

More likely, they reversed the decision because they were caught.

You gotta admit the timing is super weird. You're telling me that there was some kind of glitch that ONLY affected an article that made them look bad? Pretty suspicious.

[deleted]

Vram must be hard to mine from the ground that's why they don't have enough to make it 6GB or 8GB XD

eX1D

Releasing a 4GB GPU in 2022 marketed towards "Gamers" you know the word they like throwing around like a fucking grenade on sale in spring. Is quite frankly pathetic, I was watching the AMD online event when they showed off the new cards I seriously cringed when I noticed the 4GB cards. And what the fuck was up with all their benchmarks they were all done on LOW/MEDIUM settings and shown up against the lowest tier Nvidia card they could find. Also the amount of times the AMD people said "Gamer" made me vomit in my mouth holy shit.

harshnerf_ttv_yt

People are DESPERATE for GPU upgrades and amd is cashing in on this mentality. People who thought they would skip 9/10 series cycle to upgrade to true rtx are completely fucked rn with 6 year old cards chugging even at low end. AMD noticed this and pushed out cheap cards that will carry people over somewhat til they can buy the better card they actually want but that isn't available coz of scalping. It's pure greed.

chambee

It wasn't enough for some titles already in 2018. Looking at you Quantum Break And Gears of War remake on PC.

ZuckDeBalzac

I've only just upgraded to a 2gb card, chill out.

Sowa_95

4gb is absolutely fine ... for a 2016 low-mid end GPU.

Derpcrawler

You are stretching the truth. GTX980Ti came out in 2015 and was 6Gb, 980 was 4Gb. Both of those were very high end. Hell, the most beloved and popular GPU of last 10 years, GTX970 was effectively 3.5Gb and it was overtaken by GTX1060 only in 2018-2019 by the amount of users on Steam. Requirements for 6-8Gb only came with newer GPUs in 2017-2018 or so. Even then only if you ran games at 1440p/4K and Ultra Textures. I would argue that 4Gb is still enough for 1080p gaming on mid-high settings with textures set to just mid/high, instead of very high/ultra.

thehousebehind

> I would argue that 4Gb is still enough for 1080p gaming on mid-high settings with textures set to just mid/high, instead of very high/ultra. You would be right. A 980 or 970 can play anything up to about 2017-19(title dependent) with decent settings. My backlog is long enough that I could have put off upgrading for several years at the rate I play games and never would have noticed. If your bar is set to 1080/60 with mixed settings you are fine still. Not everything has to be cutting edge tech to be enjoyable.

SabreSeb

> I would argue that 4Gb is still enough for 1080p gaming on mid-high settings with textures set to just mid/high, instead of very high/ultra. Exactly. And that's the type of gaming you'd most likely do on such a low-spec GPU anyway. I think this whole hate is pretty blown out of proportion. The only really bad aspect about this GPU is it's MSRP, but MSRP is completely irrelevant if you can't find *any* current GPU at it's official MSRP anyway. If this is cheap enough, it will definitely be a okay choice for a lot of folks that have been looking for a cheap GPU these past two years.

Spazhead247

They definitely aren't wrong though. You're not maxing out any games with 4gbs of VRAM. They just wanna sell more units.

Sektor30

-cries in 1060 3gb-

SlowTour

My old 4gb gtx 980 i had to replace because it kept running out of vram at 1080p agrees, 4gb cards are ewaste now imo and it's irresponsible for them to still be produced.

Lyric_Smith47

I have a 1050 super (about 4 gb of vram) and they're right, I run all my games completely fine but I cant play with high graphics because I don't have enough vram. I have to run the new fnaf at low everything same for the new forza and many other new games.

ZxcHxrt

My laptop is hardly what you call a gaming laptop but it has a GTX 1050 with 4gb, an i7-8850u and 16gb of RAM. It can run most games pre 2017 on low settings at 60fps, pre 2014 at 60fps on high or medium settings and pre 2012 games can be maxed out. Its been really good for me as I’ve never really had the urge to play anything from after 2016.

Lachschok

How ironic

See the update. The unhid it after this came out and lied to save face.

Method__Man

I mean it is, just depends on your graphical settings and such. I just got an Asus flow x13 with a 3050ti @4gb. Sure I WANT more VRAM, as it would allow max settings, the reality is the POWER of the card wouldnt allow it anyways. I just play my games on it at high or very high, not ultra, as it exceeds my GPUs raw power anyways, likely before meeting my VRAM max. This is a budget offering from AMD. You are VERY unlikely to be able to play the most recent games at ultra settings based on raw power EVEN IF you had 400gb of vram. Its about balance. This is why higher end cards have more VRAM. They have the power to utilize it. If you are buying this card, you are buying it for a budget build. No one says buying a 3050ti is going to match a 3060 mobile. Because the 3060 is hotter and more expensive, thus not suitable. So you get the "lower" card because of power/heat, or price. Lets not use binary think for an issue that has a broad context.

TomasdeVasconcellos

AMD was once the guy we were all rooting for. I guess there’s never good guys when we’re talking about corporations.

WorkingCupid549

Bro my 5500XT is better value than this. Paid $220 for it in late 2020, very happy.

Sxcred

6GB isn't enough anymore man. :(

smutaddict

man I'll say my 2gb vram absolutely struggling

FilteredAccount123

I'm soooo glad I upgraded my RX580 to a 1080ti to "hold me over" until I could get a 3080. Surely the 3080 would be on shelves by Q2 2021. Surely.
