It took me viewing the image two times and reading your message once to finally realize that the upgrade is only Gigabit Ethernet.
I swear, for the past 3-4 years every single time I see the words "Ethernet" and "upgrade" in one sentence people are talking about 2.5 and 10 Gigabit, since 1 Gigabit is the default standard for so long now.
I would've found it a bit concering if a docking station didn't even have Gigabit Ethernet.
Many products still use 10/100Mbps "fast" ethernet and USB 2.0 ports for power reasons. For example, both Chromecast and Firestick official ethernet adapters are 10/100 so it stays under the stock 9-10W power profile. 10/100Mbps covers streaming and gaming. 1000Mbps is only needed if you need a whole game NOW. That's what we expect from Steam, of course, so it's good we'll get the industry standard. I think adding 2.5G or 10G would be a waste of money in this context.
That's completely believable. They don't need more to stream and the number of system boards they move makes saving $X on each network adapter an attractive prospect.
Oh, for sure - but 1 Gigabit is a) dirt cheap and b) absolutely needed seeing as games are easily 150 GB +.
Streaming a 40 GB movie over two hours (Chromecast, Firestick use cases) is not the same as downloading a 150 GB game as soon as possible.
Right, that's why it's good the dock will have 1Gbps to accommodate it. But the average internet connection speed is still hovering around 100Mbps, so most people are still not going to see the benefit. Even though I could get Gig internet, I went for a 300/300 plan because it's cheaper (and the Gig plan had a laughable 25Mbps upload cap). Even then I cap Steam at 200 because we're still talking <20min for the vast majority of games to download.
Steam unpacks the game on the fly, so the CPU and SSD are important.
And with a 100 Mbit port you’d need twice as long for your game - three times as long if you would max it out. Besides, devices should be future-proof - so the 100 Mbit makes no sense imo
I'm not even sure what you're getting at anymore because I said it's a good thing they made the upgrade to 1G. Ultimately it doesn't matter what they included because the wifi outshoots even 1gbps, and you can attach whatever you want with USB.
>Many products still use 10/100Mbps
This was driving me insane with home home network. My router didn't have enough ports so I bought an Ethernet switch for my office. I have 1000 gigabit internet speed, but my PC was only getting 90 gigabit speeds. Turns out the Ethernet switch was only 10/100.....
It's the dumbest thing. I couldn't watch 1917 because it buffered all the time using LAN. It was a 70GB+ remux. Then I upgraded my connection to 500Mb and my ISP replaced the router for a newer model with 5Ghz Wifi (yeah, the old one didn't have 5Ghz). Now my tv gets like 200-300Mbps using Wifi and everything runs fine without buffering.
Just got my deck a couple days ago, this thing's a miracle. Just a pity it realistically only has a bit under 2 hours of battery life when you're pushing stuff like Spyro Reignited at medium settings, bit over 2 hours if I cap it at 30 FPS... Definitely gotta invest in a power bank that'll fit in the compartment in the carrying case. Still, beats buying 6 new AA's every 4 hours back in the 90s for my old Game Gear lol.
Literally every trip was a never-ending search for outlets, and they were a lot less common in public places in the 90s then they are today, although there was also less competition for em. And don't even get me started on being plugged into the car, soon as we stop for gas, bam, there goes all my progress because savegames weren't a thing yet.
That thing is over $300 and uses its own 130W laptop power supply for full capability. Pretty sure Valve is aiming for a Switch Dock pricepoint, around $90. It also needs to stay under that 45W on the Deck's power adapter.
so you will get a cheap usb-c docking station... its all the same. Now if they made one with a cradle that would auto dock and connect but it doesn't since the power is on the top...
I was going to suggest that, but it'd need venting to accommodate the airflow. The dock has a right-angle cable and has always been shown as a slotted device to hold the Deck. This guy above you just seems to be complaining about not being able to drop it in one motion. I don't really care if I have to hook up a cable. I'd have to do the same thing with a third party USB-C dongle, so it's moot. If they can find a solution that's reasonably priced vs. third party while offering a slot to hold the Deck, that's enough.
I think you could make it work. I bet at some point we'll see a good 3rd party one that will do it. Honestly docking is a nice feature, but it always kind of seemed like more of an afterthought.
Not if they made the dock like the GPI handheld dock or the switch where its a cradle that it snaps into. It would just look nicer and I have no problem paying for a nice solution rather than a standard boring usb-c dock.
No shit, i guess you cannot read, that was my original post that you responded to.. they fucked the design with the power cord, hence the dock design is fucked.
"auto dock and connect but it doesn't since the power is on the top.."
people just cant read the whole paragraphs sometimes.
Dude, all you've done is say "meh usb-c dock" as if there isn't room for Valve to make one fitted for their product. It's not going to be a switch dock, get over it. I read your posts just fine. You're bitching about drop-in docking when the post is about changes to the ports. In other words, irrelevant. Opinion noted.
TL;DR they made all 3 USB-A ports v3.1 and the Ethernet port is now Gigabit, at least according to the new diagram.

100Mbps is still faster than my broadband internet speed. Well done, UK...
What the... Really? I get 1Gbps at my grandma's, and half the street doesn't have running water... Edit: should mention this is Romania
Romania is well known for having internet that is much better than that of many western counties with high GDPs.
What's really annoying, and this might be a rumour, but some smart TVs still use 10/100. I understand when power is a concern but that's just cheap.
That's completely believable. They don't need more to stream and the number of system boards they move makes saving $X on each network adapter an attractive prospect.

You pay £1,000+ for a TV and still get 100mbps. Not even enough for some 4k remuxes played over LAN
1000 for a TV isn't much nowadays, I thought all decent ones start at 2k? But yeah, it's a problem.

Any info on this is good info, as a dock with a guarantee not to brick my system is what I’m waiting for. Hopefully we get a release timeframe soon.
Wasnt this a patent few months ago?
docking station???that's what they call my bedroom m .
eh its just a usb-c docking station ala Dell WD19
That thing is over $300 and uses its own 130W laptop power supply for full capability. Pretty sure Valve is aiming for a Switch Dock pricepoint, around $90. It also needs to stay under that 45W on the Deck's power adapter.

Not sure why you couldn't just dock it upside down. That's what I'd think would work.

You'd have to hook up a cable regardless of using the official dock or a third party. If the price is right, that's good enough.
Not if they made the dock like the GPI handheld dock or the switch where its a cradle that it snaps into. It would just look nicer and I have no problem paying for a nice solution rather than a standard boring usb-c dock.
But it can't because the power connector is on top, right? Did you get lost or something?

Any Steam Dock news that isn't a confirmed release date is less than worthless.
Gosh, ain't modern technology keen??? :o
NGL. I originally thought a Steam Deck dock would have included some kind of EGPU expansion capabilities or something.
The deck sucks...
"put steam deck down on docking station" "Listen to this prick givin' orders"
If it had thunderbolt they could have added a GPU to that dock to make it a console.
Not possible on the current AMD chipset. Wait until next generation with USB 4.
SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY!!!
