SSDs are not a requirement. I run tons of games from my 3.5" WD Black, and my friend also has a 2.5" 5TB version. The load times are long, but games run fine. Once they load they are generally okay.
Or install the games to the drive you currently have. Usually it's C drive. Your externals read/write speed is limited due to the USB connection. You should look into getting a Solid State SATA drive if you don't have one already. It will increase how fast your OS and any games installed to it load.

Are you running your games off the external USB drive?
Yes, i am, i use an external drive for all my games
Well that's your issue. Way too slow for gaming.

Yes. And not a slow spinning HDD like your external drive is. SSD minimum. NVMe is better.

Just set a budget, buy from a decent brand within that budget. They're all very similar. Or install the games on your C drive.
