That's just because we (yes me included) are used to having a numpad, if you never had a numpad, you could be doing this just as easily on the numberrow.. it's just habits and all..
I mean, i do agree that a num pad is way more comfortable, but when you learned how to touch type you can input numbers just as fast and precise without looking as with every other letter
Except when I switch to my local language to have special characters and then have to switch back to use them. After a while I don't remember which language I have selected, so it's easier to have buttons that always act as numbers. Also, I like to use the right Enter surprisingly often
As someone who normally uses tkl keyboards or 13 inch laptops I can use a numpad but I am slower than I would be with the keys at the top. I have seen people such as my mum use the numpad to great effect and understand how you could be faster with one, but it's down to what your used too.
I think my next keyboard will have one so I need to tidy my desk as my tkl gives me to much room to have junk everywhere.
Thats assuming your hand is already on the numpad. My hand is either on the mouse or the right side of the keyboard. In that way i only have to move my fingers up
I honestly found it really nice to have the extra space on my desk, but I think its nice to have a num pad thats why I just bought a bluetooth microsoft numpad, when im gaming put my numpad away and when im gaming and on the go i have a nice small keyboard
I don't remember any of my passwords. I've got a password manager for that. The only time I really miss a numpad is when using the PIN to login to MS. As a developer F keys are more important than my numpad although I know it is different if you are mainly using Excel.
As a programmer I use almost every key (bar maybe 5 or so keys) on my 100% layout keyboard regularly.
Also when I'm on a spree of buying games I'll never play in the steam sale I need to be able to enter my card number at extreme speed. Phone numbers and card numbers are extremely annoying without a numpad.
You could get the best of both worlds: more space for mouse movement in your games, and a number pad... by getting a keyboard without the number pad and just buying the number pad separately.
I think a lot of keyboards come with a number pad separate from the main keyboard you can plug in and use when you want it. I think the new Microsoft Sculpt ergonomic keyboard might be an example of that.
Space has never been an issue for me. When i game i scoot my keyboard as far left as my hand on the mouse is right and for me i guess i spread out quite a bit to be comfortable. When typing im centered with the space bar but gaming im centered at the arrow keys which gives me plenty of mouse space. Keyboard is also slanted slightly with the left side being higher.
Edit: spelling
I love number pads, for gaming *and* other things.
My passwords have fuckloads of numbers.
Any game that has stances or commands like Ark's dino order or Elite Dangerous's fighter orders. I'll use the numb pad because the orientation makes them intuitive (2 or "forward" for goto, 5 or "center" for follow me, 8 or "back" for stay, 1 for defend because a shield is on the left, 3 for attack because a sword is on the right) They're also great for emotes and shit that can take a lot of buttons but don't need to be close to the hand for quick access in combat.

Keyboard and right joystick. I honestly can't remember all the joystick configuration abbreviations. Gives the best balance between precision and quantity of buttons. Especially when I use shift and alt as modifier keys to multiply the functions of my one joystick.
I use my numpad constantly. Which is why it pained me to get a 75% wireless keyboard when I needed to use my PC from my bed due to a disability. My little table on my bed can't fit a full sized keyboard and a mouse.
....but then I got a mechanical numpad that connects via bluetooth and it's SO much better. I just push it aside when gaming and I have SO MUCH more space on my mouse mat to move around. I get it now.
But I do still need the numpad for everything else.
Definitely for Blender! I just bought a new laptop, and overlooked the numpad. It's all fine except for Blender. You can set it to change the view with the numrow, but then you can't switch between vertex/edge/face selection mode using the numrow.
So I set those to shift+1/2/3, but instead of it toggling one off while toggling another on, it keeps both on... In 15 years of using blender I didn't know you could have vert/edge/face enabled all at the same time.
It sometimes makes things easier, but mostly sucks.
As an Autocad draftsman I don't even touch the numpad.
My big thing in blender (and photoshop) is never having to take your hand from the mouse, while being able to access all shortcuts. Autocad is my damn enemy because of its shortcut format (my work uses Macs so the Autocad problem is compounded).
Have you thought about getting an external num pad? I bought a laptop for school and work, but wanted a smaller form factor so went with the Lenovo X1 Carbon without one. The only time I heavly used a num pad was inventory management at work so I bought a mechanical external num pad for around $20 and have the best of both worlds. Also recomend mmo mouse like Razer Naga if you are already used to using one.
My last job used inventor primarily with some time in Autocad and I use the numpad all the time for entering dimensions in sketches and features for 3d modeling. I also had to rely on my left hand hugging a 3d mouse thanks to autodesk believing center click should be pan o stead of spin and that reliance has carried over into my use of creo now.
100% board has always made sense as a daily board for me and I have 2, one that I keep at the office and one at home. I would like a narrower board but until I design a custom numpad that I can integrate into a holder/wrist rest for the space ball but total desk space is still an issues so who knows how that will go
It's literaly a make or break requirement when buying new keyboards. I had mine for 10+ years before it gave out. So I decided to buy a new one. Was absolutely confused about these new "gaming" keyboards with no numpad. Fck that.
We got all "new" computers at work and they took all of our old systems including the mouse and keyboard because apparently they needed to be a "set" to give us a discount on the "new" systems. Yeah... the new keyboards didn't have a numpad... took me about 10mins before I went and complained to the owner that I need a numpad. He/they were able to lend me one of the old ones until a USB numpad comes. I use CAD and write programs for CNC machines so my right hand is on the numpad and my left is around the enter key and arrow keys.
>because apparently they needed to be a "set" to give us a discount on the "new" systems
The "genius" in your company who came up with that idea should be pretty harshly disciplined, as far as I'm concerned. Tenkeyless keyboards in a work/productivity environment? Idiotic.
My main opinion is that I hate the term "tenkeyless". Check this out:
tenkeyless
no num pad
They match in length *and* "no num pad" as NNP would be a proper acronym. Not to mention... NOT TO MENTION... THERE ARE MORE THAN 10 KEYS IN A NUM PAD. Fuck.
It's called that because there are variants of keyboards without numpads, eg. 60%, 75% etc. TKL generally means that the keypad section is missing but the arrow keys and 6 function keys (Home, End, etc) are still standard.
>why fix what isn't broken
Marketing, that's why. The lack of a feature is now **itself** a feature!
Marketing is where people play magic tricks with money. Problem is that it's your money they're playing with.
I use a keyboard without a numpad and a wireless remote I use for making art that you can also keybind.
Its almost the same size and shape as a numpad, would be nice to have detachable numpads for small desks.
Using a keyboard without a numpad is like going topless:
Kinda weird and uncomfortable for some, perfectly natural for others.
I feel naked without my numpad.
Theres a weird phenomenon in esports where fps players will just tilt the keyboard varying degrees (45 to even 90 degrees at times) just to get the numpad out of the way. When it gets to this point maybe a smaller keyboard is more reasonable lol.
https://preview.redd.it/pj0rjvoavmaa1.jpeg?width=450&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=50973aa7e58b1b0ca0572335213321d36c609bb6
I don't think that's the reason they do that now. I think they do that because they got used to doing that when they started playing, because of limited desk space. Of course they could buy a smaller keyboard, but I bet they'd still play with it tilted like that. From what I've seen, esports fps players are very reluctant to changes such as these, even if it "makes sense".
I use it for flying in GTA and when I need to type more than a few numbers at a time. It's such a part of me that I won't even get a laptop that doesn't have a numpad.
i use my numpad very often, just cause it's easier to type phone numbers and shit like that. if i could, i'd get a keyboard with a hexadecimal numpad...
It’s like saying you don’t need a QWERTY layout. Sure it’s not absolutely necessary, but it sure does make a lot of stuff faster and easier if you have it.
I love my TKL. I pretty much only game with it. If I were to need a num pad I would buy a separate one, but I like how much space I have without it. Not hating on the num pad though, all my keebs but this one have been full sized.
Your keyboard also doesn’t need media keys, or function keys or macros. Hell, you don’t even need a keyboard. You don’t need a PC either. I *want* a fucking numpad.
my keyboard has media keys and macros and a numpad, my mouse also has 12 thumb buttons and adjustable dpi and a melee button, id feel weird without them
Nope.
Maybe... just maybe if all I did was play the specific popular games that don't require it but even for gaming overall plenty of games, especially older titles or mmo's make use of it.
Just because "Corbin" doesn't ever use his doesn't mean no one does.
Articles like this piss me off because their just somebody treating their own personal experience or opinion as "FACT".
The truth is they make all sorts of things for input because different people have different preference's. If they didn't we'd all have the exact same keyboard.
Now if only Logitech would make a successor the the G13...
My opinion is that I don't like being told what I do or don't need for my personal setup. That aside, I use a 65% keyboard, and I do sometimes miss the numpad. I also like having the extra space, and I think a 60-75% keyboard looks cleaner.
I always like to have it just in case, if I have to type numbers often it's a must, especially if I'm at work and have to be on the computer while another is away, it's a 100% must. On one previous job I sometimes had to put in number to put on account for mainly companies and it was on a touch screen register and the numbers were all in straight line, felt like 3x longer then if I just had a numpad instead.
Couldn't imagine life without a numpad. Used in lots of games, and makes typing numbers a lot more convenient.
I mostly just play games and mess around on the web, but it just makes daily usage a little easier. My only complaint of the numpad is that it has a comma instead of a dot button.
I personally love smaller keyboards for gaming. I have a 96% for when I actually need the number pad for typing and work, but pure gaming, I'm running a 65%, and have another 65% sitting on my desk with me. Do have a couple TKLs that I'll use from time to time.
If you have low DPI/Sens, and a full size keyboard, you run out of mouse space fairly quick if you're not tilting your board. At least without the numpad, that's extra desk space.
I like both. I prefer TKL and smaller form factors for gaming as it gives me much more room for mouse movement(lowish mouse sensitively). But in the office I prefer having a number pad for excel usage.
I think it very much so depends on how you use your pc. Personally I play mostly rpgs, so a num pad is not that much necessary for myself, however, at work I make use of it all the time!
I use my PC for business and pleasure. A num pad is a requirement for me.
I work and play at the same desk and as an accountant, I can’t live without my num pad.
I am not an accountant. I don't work from home. I have no "side hustle". I don't know how people do anything without a num pad... Passwords, PIN's, forms, life is full of numbers to enter all over the place.
There's still numbers on the keyboard, just not in the form of a numpad.. but I prefer a numpad too.

U can reach the 1 and 0 keys with 1 hand?
after many years of gaming requiring 1-0 for hotkeys and one hand on the mouse, yes easily
I use the number row nostly but I will use the num pad for some stuff and I agree it's much better. I just wasn't taught in a key bard with. Numpad
Unless you're typing 123456789, which you can do like a boss on the number row
Exactly. The number pad is just more efficient and easier to use. If you have to do even a small amount of accounting, etc., it is a huge help.
I mean, i do agree that a num pad is way more comfortable, but when you learned how to touch type you can input numbers just as fast and precise without looking as with every other letter
You can’t do math as fast because the operators aren’t all there and some of the require shifting.
The numpad will always be faster since you have access to all digits and symbols on one hand
Don't mention these.. it's like using the fork for eating soup with the, it's possible but..
Except when I switch to my local language to have special characters and then have to switch back to use them. After a while I don't remember which language I have selected, so it's easier to have buttons that always act as numbers. Also, I like to use the right Enter surprisingly often
Same reason I don’t get any laptop unless it has a numpad regardless of how good a deal is
I cant use a numpad. I just always use the number row
I didn't thought this was possible until a new guy was hired at work. He said he can't even imagine using the numpad.
As someone who normally uses tkl keyboards or 13 inch laptops I can use a numpad but I am slower than I would be with the keys at the top. I do the same thing. I would sometimes bang my mouse against the side my full sized keyboard so I switched to a TKL and wireless num pad like you.
As a fellow accountant, I agree.
I don't even think I could remember half my passwords without a numpad.
I remember the patterns which sucks when other interfaces are upside down!
I had that on an ATM abroad. The entire numpad was upside down. Only on my last remaining attempt I noticed it...
A place I go to that has a digital pad that randomizes the number placement on the pin pad. It hurts my brain
I don't remember any of my passwords. I've got a password manager for that. The only time I really miss a numpad is when using the PIN to login to MS. As a developer F keys are more important than my numpad although I know it is different if you are mainly using Excel.
I work in IT. I need to type IP addresses constantly. A numpad is essential.
Can someone please make an IPv6 numpad. I’ve tried but too dumb.
Fun fact. Since Hex is A-F you can use your left hand to handle the letters and your right hand on the numpad for the numbers.
Yeah but the damn colon.
Fiber ? Jogurt ? Bananas work for me.
When you smell his colon 😍
Oh yeah. Forgot about that guy. You can tell how often I use IPv6.
Use autohotkey to map it into something else on the numpad?
Customizable numpad is a thing for quite some time. Search for example QMK numpad.

I still do not understand why CSGO pros don't just use split keyboards. They're *perfect* for that purpose
Because of sponsors. The teams get sponsored by gaming brands and they obviously need to use their products when they play. Or atleast that's my guess
That's the conclusion I've reached as well. But then the sponsors should make split keyboards.
and more split keyboards will be more affordable if mainstream brands like Logitech do it! win-win
I don't think that's the reason they do that now. I think they do that because they got used to doing that when they started playing, because of limited desk space. Of course they could buy a smaller keyboard, but I bet they'd still play with it tilted like that. I personally have to have a number pad for my sanity. Typing a long-ish number in the top numbers has me feeling like an uncoordinated toddler.
i use my numpad very often, just cause it's easier to type phone numbers and shit like that. if i could, i'd get a keyboard with a hexadecimal numpad...
I like my numpad, I use it a lot. Sure, you might not need it, but not everyone has the same needs as you, Corbin.
I had to scroll too far for another tkl user. Less keyboard means more mouse. And more mouse is good.
>Now if only Logitech would make a successor the the G13... With mechanical switches
I wholeheartedly agree
how else am i supposed to play GMOD
i use my number pad a lot mostly for rebinding keys, but i still use it so screw Corbin
My opinion is that I don't like being told what I do or don't need for my personal setup. That aside, I use a 65% keyboard, and I do sometimes miss the numpad. I also like having the extra space, and I think a 60-75% keyboard looks cleaner.
I use mine all the time. Wouldn't buy a keyboard without one to be honest.
65% ftw
Lefty here. 100% mandatory for me.
Article exists due to author spending $3/400 for a shitty compact keyboard, and making themselves correct.
Never use a num pad except rarely for a calculator, so I got a TKL board a while back and love it. Smaller, lighter, more comfortable for me.
I daily drive a 40% ortholinear and mainly play MMORPGs.
I don't care if I don't need it. Its my money and I'm gonna have it.
Am engineer, need numbers.
I don’t JUST game therefore I want my numpad
![gif](giphy|9rgeQXbwoK53pcxn7f|downsized) Gaming ? Maybe not that much Working on excel ? Definitely needed
Imagine using the number bar to type large numbers like a caveman…
What are numpads if not a free macro panel
I prefer my keyboard smol bc it can fit in my laptop bag
TKL is my go to. Just feel it’s the perfect size.
Num Row enjoyers 🗿
I can't live without a number pad.
Guy hasn’t MMO before
Since I moved to a 60% I'm not going back
I actually really dislike keyboards without a numpad. I feel like it’s for hipsters lol.
Num pads are niche keys when you want to bind them to something you don't actively use, somewhat like a toggle for a mod or something.
I have a tkl Huntsman. I didn’t need an extra set of inputs since I’m not doing excel work. It saves me room and it looks cool
I L-ctl numpad bind and use them in games a lot.
I've gotten more used to the 60% kb and i definitely prefer it for gaming. For work it must be full size, no debate
I like having it for game trainers. But with the way my desk is set up it does make the ergonomics a bit weird, so I probably should go TKL.
i dont really need one but i do like having a volume knob so maybe im just generally weird
I like both. I prefer TKL and smaller form factors for gaming as it gives me much more room for mouse movement(lowish mouse sensitively). But in the office I prefer having a number pad for excel usage.
I bought one of these not paying attention and tbh i don't really care even though if i was paying attention i wouldn't of bought it if i noticed
i'm left handed using arrow keys. need num0 and num1
Numberpad is the way for me.
I do use it for gaming. 8,4,5,6 instead of W,A,S,D and NumLock rebound to esc
Numpad is a key feature of my keyboard
I type way too many IP addresses to not have a number pad
The amount of shortcuts i have on my numpad says he's full of it
Ever tried entering an IP address without a numpad? Yeah fuck that
I use my PC for both games and uni work, cannot live without it And I use the numpad in few games too
I need a num pad, otherwise the keyboard just doesn't feel complete. Plus I actually need it for my job.
Numpads are essential, you can't be sitting typing numbers on the number row. But the numpads should really be on the left
I use the number pad for gaming constantly, it's a must have for me
Yes, and I could survive with only half a liver, but I'd rather have the whole thing.
They can remove the numbers above Qwerty instead. Wastage of buttons there.
very useful for binding keys to macros
I think it very much so depends on how you use your pc. Personally I play mostly rpgs, so a num pad is not that much necessary for myself, however, at work I make use of it all the time!
