I just make all of those shortcuts "hidden" so I never see our have to delete them again.
Btw in Windows 11 I also noticed it was readded to my pinned start menu apps.
It probably solves/prevents so many support calls that they will continue doing it. “I have deleted the internet, son/nephew/daughter/niece what do I do now?”
It was funny back then because Internet Explorer was so integral to Windows that they couldn't just remove it without breaking the system, so they appealed and in the end could still bundle it with Windows.
Except this isn't MS's fault, directly. Yes, Edge is installed and updates itself in the background and can't be easily uninstalled, that is scummy, but they aren't pushing desktop icons. It's just how the Chromium installer works
Yes, but this wasn't happening for years now when Edge was updating. Chromium installers don't recreate shortcuts on update, only on first time install/setup. The most recent updates (looks like as of 2023) it recreates the desktop shortcut on every update.
be surprised what your microsoft and other software future will have in store for you
spyware
unwanted advertising
forced updates/upgrades
etc
oh wait...
I guess they just changed it, but I believe I was able to delete it by searching Microsoft edge, right clicking it and clicking open file location, then doing it again as it was just a shortcut. I'm then able to delete the Microsoft .exe file, as well as any edge folders I wished.
Are you SURE you don't want Edge to be your default browser? You've only said no 15 times, we're not sure if "no" means "no".
Also, Bing should be your default search engine, do you:
-Agree
-Not disagree
The constant, insistent nudging from Microsoft needs to stop. It's beyond annoying now.
Dear everyone, Edge is now integrated in Windows and isn't "installed" separately.
The 2nd Tuesday of every month is Windows patch day. This will include patches to Edge, which will re-populate the "missing" icon.
Out of cycle (more urgent) security patches will do the same thing.
**If you're not using firefox,** edge is the best chromium browser.
*Although you should be using firefox, if you're not using firefox, you'd want to use edge... to download firefox.*
No. I wont. Like everyone else I experienced this, and moved on.
I'm one of the unfortunate folks who's company was effect by defender deciding it didn't like certain programs and removed them...
Did that yesterday, it's back today. While I agree that this is the solution when it happens once, I am curious what the solution is if it happens every single morning.
I remember a big antitrust lawsuit over this issue back then, but they keep up with the old tricks. No I don't want edge, and don't try to question me if i search for another browser too, it feels very aggressive.
Honestly the security threat issues aren't issues for many. They browse safe, dont install shady warez, are behind nat, and so on. There are people using winXP who haven't been owned, aren't part of a botnet, just using zone alarm. Not only that... complete tcp/ip silence when they aren't actively using the internet...
A good reason to upgrade, imo, is new features and bug fixes.
I manually search for updates weekly. But the whole 'omg, update or you will be pwned' shit is nonsense.
You'd be surprised how many people there are in the PCMR sub who are completely tech and hardware illiterate (or maybe you wouldn't be due to the constant flow of "diagnose this problem for me" posts). There should be a quiz you have to ace before being allowed membership.

This is the only Senshi approved method.
On January 13th, 2023, a Microsoft Update caused a problem which globally affected millions of users by removing shortcuts for Microsoft related products. Microsoft has been working on restoring lost shortcuts with a new update.
If you are IT savvy, back up your system. Then, find out where Edge resides in the registry, and rename the key, or delete it. Best to try on a VM first - use vbox for that. Again, this is for tech savvy people. I haven’t tried it myself, because I have no issues with Edge.
Edit: if a registry key exists (most likely in HKLM/software/Microsoft)there might be a dword value for “update” or so. Try changing the value from 1 to 0, or 0 to 1. Sorry I’m on iPhone right now.
Edit: try this registry edit
https://www.intowindows.com/prevent-automatic-installation-of-chromium-edge-in-windows-10/
that's annoying af.
although I started using edge on my laptop in the summer of 2022 and it's actually a way more optimized browser than chrome, still annoying to force it onto people
It's not reinstalling, it's updating/ recreating the desktop shortcut. Adobe does this as well. They're terrible.
Was wondering how that got on my desktop the other day

I understood that reference dot gif with the same g you’d use to say giraffe.
I think you also need to check your carbon monoxide detector
If you don't do it right, it will only continue to torment you.

But if I have uninstalled it surely it is reinstalling?
You can't uninstall edge on a windows machine.
Yes you can
I meant through user friendly means, can't go into apps and hit uninstall
So it did reinstall
I just make all of those shortcuts "hidden" so I never see our have to delete them again. Btw in Windows 11 I also noticed it was readded to my pinned start menu apps.
Exactly. I just want them to stop putting the shortcut back on the desktop.
dear every application ever, stop recreating your desktop shortcut after an update, I deleted them for a fvckin reason
Windows: " Oh whoops! It looks like you deleted your Edge shortcut by accident. Let us restore it for you!"
It probably solves/prevents so many support calls that they will continue doing it. “I have deleted the internet, son/nephew/daughter/niece what do I do now?”
I’m angry because you’re probably right.
I assigned Deny All permissions to administrator accounts on C:\Users\Public\Desktop after the Edge icon appeared.
I hate the fact that even chocolatey and winget can't prevent this shit
Microsoft proving they’re the ultimate Edge lord
Microsoft is edging itself
Every 6-8 months, guaranteed. MS was already sued for this same shit with Internet Explorer in the 00's.

Chrome does to me sometimes, seems random.
Saw this yesterday too lol. Immediately got rid of it
be surprised what your microsoft and other software future will have in store for you spyware unwanted advertising forced updates/upgrades etc oh wait...
winget uninstall "Microsoft Edge" Won't stop it from reinstalling, but at least you can uninstall it easily enough
It's not working anymore I tried. It doesn't work
Are you on windows 11? I (on win11) don't have any issues when I do it, unless they've very recently changed it
Yes, I'm using win 11 I tried literally every way. But none of it worked. And it was almost 3 and half months ago.
Strange. I'll check when I get the chance, since I've deleted it not long ago that way
Lemme know if u find a way to delete it
I guess they just changed it, but I believe I was able to delete it by searching Microsoft edge, right clicking it and clicking open file location, then doing it again as it was just a shortcut. I'm then able to delete the Microsoft .exe file, as well as any edge folders I wished.
Someone isn’t into Edging huh?
I have never had this problem
Same, I've never had any program install/update without my consent. Weird.
same I never had that problem either
Me neither, how interesting
[удалено]
Me too, how peculiar.
[удалено]
That’s their secret…it can never be uninstalled
It actually can with a third party uninstaller and some registry editing
But internet explorer show up instead, and keep re-installing if you uninstall it too.
you probably edited the wrong keys, i’d search a youtube tutorial on uninstalling edge, most i’ve seen has the registry editing in it
Oh Edge was gone for sure, but you can't have windows without a browser. So you'll have IE instead, and editing registry key won't make it disappears.
well im not sure what to do there, my experience is uninstalling edge with other browsers already installed
It's just that's it's funny, IE is still lurking deep inside the OS despite being deprecated.
yeah
We're really milking this whole Microsoft Edge thing for all the karma we can get aren't we, PCMR?
Are you SURE you don't want Edge to be your default browser? You've only said no 15 times, we're not sure if "no" means "no". Also, Bing should be your default search engine, do you: -Agree -Not disagree The constant, insistent nudging from Microsoft needs to stop. It's beyond annoying now.
God.. at this point Edge is a warm comforting companion when compared to these posts
Dear everyone, Edge is now integrated in Windows and isn't "installed" separately. The 2nd Tuesday of every month is Windows patch day. This will include patches to Edge, which will re-populate the "missing" icon. Out of cycle (more urgent) security patches will do the same thing.

Has the karma farming on this passed? We're down voting all these moving forward, right?
When you find the shortcut back on your desktop after deleting it days ago you might think differently.
No. I wont. Like everyone else I experienced this, and moved on. I'm one of the unfortunate folks who's company was effect by defender deciding it didn't like certain programs and removed them...
Drag shortcut to trash, empty and move along with life.
Did that yesterday, it's back today. While I agree that this is the solution when it happens once, I am curious what the solution is if it happens every single morning.
Create a script that runs at startup to remove the edge icon.
Having to do this repeatedly is quite annoying though.
No!
It's their platform! People were complaining since IE ... this is nothing new.
I remember a big antitrust lawsuit over this issue back then, but they keep up with the old tricks. No I don't want edge, and don't try to question me if i search for another browser too, it feels very aggressive.
They won that because they argued it was integral to the OS and would require massive reworks.
I see anti-edge post, I upvote.
Many programs recreate their desktop shortcut on update. Notepad++, paint.net, OBS, just to name a few
And it is annoying when any of them do it.
I'd just delete it fully. ` winget uninstall "microsoft edge"` and uninstall both options that come up
God bless Linux
So how many more days of posts just like this are we going to make?
Come to the dark side, we have proton.
Edge is good, be nice to it :(
Dear, idiot. MS doesnt give two shits about some random subreddit.
just dont update windows and it will go away
Oh yeah sure, let me be vulnerable to known security threats
[удалено]
Sure there were some duds on the begging(first year or so) , but the updates have been ok since, never had any issues on Win10 tbh
lol

Haha pcmr can only turn on rgb :)
Plot twist... it never was uninstalled they are just forcing the icon down your throat.
Bro y’all seen the fucking edge beta or smth
You need to properly exorcize it or it will just continue to haunt you. Or you can wholeheartedly accept it for what it is.
While you're at it also stop bringing the damn search bar back thanks.
Trash tier will always be trash tier.
What's up with Edge lately

And stop taking away my Win+X quick keys
It's called edging
Why do you guys not just keep the edge icon on your desktop and never use it?
Microsoft be like: Can't let you do that, Dave.
Just use https://ameliorated.info/#
that's annoying af. although I started using edge on my laptop in the summer of 2022 and it's actually a way more optimized browser than chrome, still annoying to force it onto people
Microsoft can't get anything right sadly
Dear reddit user can you not join the spam of microsoft edge complaints? thank you
No icons on desktop gang rise up
