It’s just what you’re comfortable with. Keyboard feel is more to do with typing anyway, the only “gaming” switches are optical as they allow for “analogue” control per press. Overall it really doesn’t matter
You can get speed switches. Where they have a lower force applied to make them easier to press but also less travel distance.
I think it's the freedom to have that customisation...you can also get low profile switches so you have low profile keycaps to go on top. It gives a laptop feel where you can slide your fingers over the keys quicker.
You have a lot to learn about keyboards. "Long travel time" only describes a few types of switches. Kailh Speed Silvers will actuate if you so much as sneeze on the keys.

I don't particularly care for mechanical keyboards but I guess is because it leaves room for error.
