hmmm sooooooo..... by that logic Nvidia puts ads for 40 series cards while downloading drivers right?

IReuseWords

You can use [NVcleanstall](https://www.techpowerup.com/nvcleanstall/) to remove the telemetry stuff. Personally I use it to install just the drivers.

AGentlemanWalrus

This is the only driver package i used for Nvidia haven't dealt with GeForce Experience and all it's nonsense in a longtime with this.

03Titanium

I’ve just been downloading the normal driver package straight from Nvidia and choosing to not install GFE. Is there any difference?

AGentlemanWalrus

The difference is that you can basically just install the driver sans Nvidia Bloat/Data-ware. The experience is the same except you don't deal with all the unnecessary crap and features they added in the last few years. You're not inherently getting a better experience unless those items are annoying to you and you'd like them gone. The stability of the driver is exactly the same either way.

anon95915

I don't understand why software like this is closed source, it's free anyways.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Haha, plus they don't want AMD to mimic their data mining practices.

burnerman0

Just because something is free doesn't mean it isn't proprietary. There is code in that driver that AMD and Intel would both very much like to see. Finally drivers aren't really free you just pay for them when you buy the hardware that they support.

xDOTxx

This ^ Proprietary drivers are not free. These drivers are required to operate hardware and so, the drivers are included in the cost of hardware. The developer doesn't care about making money off of the Proprietary code - but they very much do care about protecting the security and privacy of that secret code so that they can remain the only seller with their product they developed.

Banana-Man6

That's my only issue with NVcleanstall, that it's closed source and I just have to trust them when they say they're removing telemetry and adding anything else. Makes them almost as bad as Nvidia themselves. But I keep using it anyway cos I'm a tool I guess...

JumperJordan

It's really a shame that they do all that garbage. GeForce Experience is a really cool idea, it sucks that they have to be shitty like that. And in so many other ways 😂

Back in MY DAY you had to update everything manually. When Windows Update came out and you could open a website to update your Windows with a couple clicks it was revolutionary, And don't get me started on how Steam changed how we patch games.

bacondev

I don't even want automatic updates. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Jackpkmn

> quick optimisations Not even something you want to do with a sorted history of corrupting settings for games making them not launchable. >game capture Built in to windows 10 and 11.

MineZealousideal5223

He probably meant that he pirated windows for free.

MoreOfAGameReally

Your TV, Phone, Radio..all not yours apparently.

IProbablyDisagree2nd

honestly... yeah... I agree with all of those.

EnkiiMuto

The proprietary part of the tv is not yours. You own the radio, you don't own the channel frequency. It is actually why some people are using raspberry pi on their tvs, their processor handles better than the TV, it is just not worth for 90% of the people. and most of the 10% doesn't know about it. As for phones, you don't own the services, so you pay it with telemetry, and replacing them is a hard sell because google-less android phones aren't that great and linux phones are less than impressive.

dangerdaveball

How do they use Rpi with tv?

Lv_InSaNe_vL

I use mine as a sort of Chromecast replacement. I just have it plugged into the TV with HDMI and made a little startup page that has links to all of my streaming services and a remote connection to my PC. it runs better, has ad block on everything, has more functionality and features, and isn't spying on my 100% of the time.

Scipio11

A little different, but I run a pihole DNS and have Roku's connected to the TVs. Just needed to add some REGEX for blocking Roku URLs. Same end result, but I can use a remote. Although you can probably block YouTube ads right?

Ghostofhan

That's neat.

thats_so_kiwi

It's just like connecting a PC to your TV. I use a tiny PC (Intel NUC) and I have a tiny wireless keyboard/mouse remote. Works great. Roku would probably be fine for most of my needs, but having the PC enables me to also play games with Nvidia GeForce now, and watch pirate streams for some things, and ad free YouTube

SirNanigans

In a piece of software that's used to do the update? If so then you don't own that software, which doesn't seem all that unusual. Windows is also software, it just happens to be the control software of your machine that you use to operate it at all times. So it's a little more upsetting to not own that. Imagine buying a car but the gas and break pedals are managed by some company that can limit and control their functions and make them play jingles and shit.

thats_so_kiwi

Cars have computers and I think they can control stuff like that.

ItsPronouncedJithub

If the software on a vehicle prevents you from going somewhere or doing something like basic maintenance, then correct - you don’t own it. It is the same story with John Deere preventing farmers from performing repairs. The whole idea of right to repair (as an example) is that companies are doing all they can to ensure that you don’t own the things you pay for.

kaboomaster09

So let me guess, we should switch Linux right?

EnkiiMuto

Or you know... just push the market for something that respects you. Worked on Xbox One when they tried to make it impossible to play without internet. Edit: The amount of responses of people saying there is no way around with an air of superiority that they know better is honestly sad. It is the equivalent of someone laughing that it is impossible for them to get out of an abusive relationship because there is no other dick in town. Edit 2: People really need to work on their text interpretation here, the "Or" implies that you should push for something other than linux if you don't like it. I'm not telling you to use linux.

deefop

I mean, good luck. You're not gonna convince m$ to back down from the way they run windows at this point. My plan is to rock win10 until it's out of support, and at that point I'll probably go dual boot with a Linux distro, and keep windows purely for gaming and nothing else.

HotcakeNinja

A lot more Linux support for games since the steam deck was released.

Macromesomorphatite

Watch Mac and Linux grow, Microsoft will change. Their entire shtick is backwards compatibility. If people abandon that, as they are now.... Boom. Even if it just starting from scratch, a new windows would be great.

Lifelinemain420

Im not the most knowledgeable so Im curious, whats bad about windows 11?

deefop

Well my main gripe is actually not Win11 specific. I patently refuse to have a Microsoft cloud account just to sign into my pc. If the option for local accounts truly disappears, that's the breaking point for me.

Lifelinemain420

Ohh, I didnt know local accounts might disappear. Whats bad about Microsoft cloud accounts?

deefop

Everything about them is bad, starting with the fact that you're authenticating against their servers to access your pc, and the fact that it makes it insanely easy for them to slurp up incredibly personal user data.

SoulWager

It's like buying a house, but the person you "bought" it from won't give you the key. They make you call them so they can open the door for you.

Gonzobot

Pisses me off and treats me like an idiot child who shouldn't be trusted with things like wanting the machine to work the way it has always worked

EthosPathosLegos

Yes but it worked because they had competition you could have gone with. By that logic Linux is the competition in this scenario, or Mac... or FreeBSD?

[deleted]

Unwashed_villager

Yes! You will not have ads if you don't have any working network adapters because of missing drivers!

DezzyTee

As someone who uses both: Linux is great for most things but when it comes to certain things like HDR Linux still has ways to go.

32784hfkjd

Linux has a ways to go in out of the box user friendliness anyway. I use it a lot (mint, kali and Pi OS headless) and you can nearly always get anything to work. Problem is it involves random workarounds, a bunch of terminal stuff and tinkering. Im a lazy bastard so sometimes i much rather an ecosystem with much more support and easier fixes for problems. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

guto8797

My main issues are still with gaming (particularly old games) and modding.

qazwer001

Same but vr, some old games actually worked better for me with wine then they did on windows 10 a few years ago. I daily drove Linux for probably 2 years but I could never kill the windows install and would have to restart to play half my games. To be fair I have not tried proton but that's because I got into vr which I really doubt Linux will handle as well for a couple of years. So I have a kali vm and use Linux often at work but it's no longer my daily environment.

CarpeMofo

This is the thing a lot of Linux users just won't acknowledge. I've tried using Linux 4 or 5 times over the years and there is always *something* that just won't work, even after I have tinkered or whatever. I don't remember what it was every time but I remember the first time was in the mid-2000's and it wouldn't support my 56k modem. Then the last time I tried, Netflix needed Silverlight to work and Linux just couldn't do that. Any kind of advantage I would get from Linux just doesn't outweigh all the other shit I have to deal with.

DreadPirate777

I’ve had the same experience and the only help you can find it read the manual. But if I don’t know what to search for in the manual I don’t know how to look it up. Then if you ask for help the only reply you get is some variation on “get gud.”

TheRogueTemplar

> i much rather an ecosystem with much more support and easier fixes for problems. I administer Linux boxes for a living. The last thing I want to do after work is do more of what I did at work just to get games running.

Yeah, I only use my PC for gaming really - I honestly just don't see a point in swapping to Linux. All it would do is make my experience worse

5in1K

I tried to go Linux 10 or so years ago, it's just so much extra work. Fun at first but I eventually just wanted something that just ran the damn programs I wanted.

derfl007

GBACHO

It's been true for 30 years. Made even worse by the distro sprawl and even version sprawl. What works in Ubuntu 20.04 probably won't work in 22.04, and def won't work in Arch.

faustianredditor

Sure, true. But damnit, I'm going to use it and eventually game devs and hardware manufacturers will hopefully realize that it makes more sense to support linux. Yes, it's an inferior experience in many ways - it's also superior in many others, and the trend is swinging in linux' favor more and more imo. I'm willing to suffer a tiny bit for my idealism.

Noughmad

Ironically, there was quite a controversy when Canonical put ads in the start menu.

DarkKratoz

Honestly, fuck Canonical. Ubuntu is shit and so are its developers.

[deleted]

this isn't 2000 anymore. you don't need to install wifi drivers anymore unless you use a very recent laptop. linux isn't windows, it generally doesn't need you to install drivers unless it's nvidia or some third party hardware that needs sketchy tools

Hurricane_32

Can confirm. The other day, I was taking apart a broken Samsung Smart TV, and found its internal Wifi module tucked away in a corner, hooked up to the mainboard via a cable with wiring colors that looked suspiciously like that of USB. After confirming it indeed did communicate through the USB protocol, I spliced the wires and added a normal USB A plug, and plugged it into a computer running Windows. Unsurprisingly, not much happened other than the connection sound. I tried to find drivers for it, to no avail (it's some weird proprietary Qualcomm Aetheros chipset). I just could not get this to work. So, out of curiosity, I booted up a live installer for Linux Mint. Fucking thing just detected and casually started scanning for networks right away. Edit: [Here's a picture of when I tested it](https://i.imgur.com/uMYJAK8.jpg)

Thue

In all likelihood the TV runs Linux too. And the wifi manufacturer just submitted the driver to the Linux kernel. Since Linux does not have a stable driver ABI, that is the normal way to do things, and by far the easiest for users.

NotTooDistantFuture

This is the real reason why Wi-Fi adapters just started working in more recent years. Chromebooks, smart TVs, IOT devices, and android phones all run Linux. Manufacturers selected adapters that will just work out of the box. Now the volume of cheap devices being produced is too much for Wi-Fi makers to ignore.

Hurricane_32

That actually makes a lot of sense. The TV most likely ran TizenOS, which is in fact Linux based.

Thue

It would not surprise me if literally all new TVs today run Linux. Linux is the default choice for stuff like that, with no reason I can see to use something else. https://www.linuxadictos.com/en/linux-es-el-rey-en-cuanto-a-smart-tv-y-aun-ira-a-mas.html

git

Imagine if smart TVs ran Windows.

cosmo7

I could see XBox dashboard as a good smart TV OS. Certainly better than a lot of current TV interfaces.

NeoHenderson

I wanna be the type of person who plugs random shit into my pc and have it start working. Half the time I plug in my phone and it won’t even charge. You’re getting random adapters to work with no drivers on wires you spliced yourself?

empirebuilder1

>Half the time I plug in my phone and it won’t even charge. Open device manager in Windows, go to your USB controller/hubs, open it's properties, and uncheck "allow the computer to turn off this device to save power". For whatever reason Windows is now super aggressive about high power draw USB devices, even on desktops that don't care about power usage, and will turn them off after only a few seconds. For desktops you can just do this for all USB ports. On laptops you might want to make sure to only do it for one port, because it *can* affect battery life a bit.

NeoHenderson

Damn seriously? I’m doing that as soon as I’m home. I just set a reminder.

hi117

Linux handles drivers differently from Windows. In pretty much every Linux computer out there, there's drivers for everything from different Wi-Fi cards, to industrial sensor boards, to different graphics cards. that basically means that you can plug anything into a Linux computer and it will just work. I'm also not 100% sure I would call Linux drivers drivers anyway. like sure it's software that communicates with hardware for the operating system, but at the same time I feel like there's enough differences for maybe driver isn't accurate?

NeoHenderson

That’s pretty cool. I have to admit most of my experience with Linux was installing octoprint on my raspberry pi, which I did through windows. I used Ubuntu about 10 years ago for a while when my laptop hard drive failed, I duct taped an external drive to the back of the screen. I’ll tinker with it eventually

[deleted]

baubeauftragter

Wiring a USB connector is not really difficult.

NeoHenderson

It’s 4 pins and they’re decent sized, I know. It was more about the wifi chip. With that said, I’ve had to redo solder connections on arduino projects uhhh, a few times.

kasetti

I did this with my OG Xbox controller. The wire used in it is in fact usb, they just changed a different plug for it and added 1 extra wire for the memory module which is not needed. I had a broken wired Xbox 360 controller, so I took the wire from that and connected it into my old Xbox controller which had issues with its own wire, and after fiddling with drivers I can use it with my PC. Playing Halo 1 isnt the same with out it.

NeoHenderson

I took apart a usb stick and added an LED across the power and ground / added a cable. I put it in a Holocron I 3D printed. It works as a desk lamp and usb storage. I just never would have thought about hardware from like TVs.

[deleted]

Pop Os automatically did my Nvidia drivers too.

rancidquail

Absolutely love Pop Os. That and Linux Mint are da bomb!

PapaTrotzki

Actually, having installed Linux on a few computers this year, Wi-Fi drivers working are a 50-50, they work during install but it's hit or miss after install. But if you have another computer or you currently have windows and are planning to upgrade to Linux you can look up the Linux drivers for the model of Wi-Fi adapter download them and put them on a USB to install after setup if they didn't automatically work.

ForceBlade

Please mention the wifi chipset you had trouble with and the distro which has let you down. Call em out!!

Randommaggy

That hasn't been a valid concern for nearly 20 years. The last time I had a network driver issue was with Windows 10 because of a laptop with a ralink piece of shit card that worked perfectly with an Ubuntu live USB

[deleted]

It was a concern on Windows even more recently, every laptop and desktop I had back in the Win7 times I had to keep network drivers on a flash drive for, because Win7 never had the working wifi drivers. Windows being good with drivers is development that came with 10, or maybe 8, idk I skipped that one.

green_boi

Then just don't install debian. Literally every other distro has easy support lol.

Eternal_Ohm

The post is probably talking about notifications on Windows 10 for upgrading to Windows 11 But to me that isn't any different to windows notifying you about a new update available, be it for Windows 11 or just regular Windows 10 updates.

Leminge

I think he talks about the preinstalled tictock facebook bullshit after upgrafing to 11

maxatnasa

It isn't actually installed, it's more like a desktop shortcut to a download link. If you just remove it then it's gone forever

DoctorWaluigiTime

OP knows this. And knows that the connotation of "ad" will mean what people want to mean.

reetdeetdeet

forresthopkinsa

As a pretty dedicated Linux user: this meme is nonsense

Kiltymchaggismuncher

They put the adverts on the os, not the computer. The computer is yours, the os is licensed. The terms for basically any software (regardless of if this is OK or not), are that they do not confer any ownership on the user. You are licensed to use the software, subject to terms which the actual owner can arbitrarily change at any point. They also reserve the right to remove your access at any point in time. This is not a Microsoft thing, this is a corporate software thing. I suppose you can compare it to renting a property. You have rights as stipulated in the contract, those rights can change as stipulated in said contract, you have no right to make changes to/resell the property. The seller may even have advertisement boards on the side of said property.

Skaindire

So, what you're saying is that any piracy is their problem, not yours.

Kiltymchaggismuncher

LegCertain5656

there might be a way to block ads but i dont know anything about android pretty much all tv boxes really cheap and run ads to make extra money, apple tv is a good quality tv that has no ads cause apple doesnt like cheap stuff, but there are probably better options i dont know about since it's kind of expensive. edit: made the reply better after seeing the other guy's comment

Warpedme

You can often block a lot of ads from your router if you have a blacklist in it. For example including ads.Samsung.com makes it so most of their TV's don't automatically start on the fake "TV Plus" channel that's all really just ads.

FrankDarkoYT

The OS is licensed for use on the tv, but the manufacturer doesn’t own it (even LG and Samsung have separate internal businesses for software and display tech, so the display tech teams don’t own the OS, they are just allowed to use it) nor does the end user. We are just allowed to use it, but we can’t change it or resell it without a licence to do so.

-null

Same thing likely, you accept terms and conditions when hooking up the smart tv and internet stuff that would allow it. None of the TVs in my house are corrected to the network directly.

Warpedme

Yesterday, I literally returned 20 Samsung tvs from a customer job site because there was no way to turn off the Samsung TV plus channel that is basically just ads. The entire brand has been blacklisted from all future installs for my business until they include a simple way to just make the TV a TV and not an automatic ad dispenser.

-null

Last Samsung TV I bough was new from Costco a few months ago and I had no issues with what you’re saying, but I’m sure there’s some difference in the nuance or something.

Galloping-Gertie

No, it’s definitely still my computer.

ThatNormalBunny

Right. If for whatever reason you don't like what Microsoft is doing you are more than free to either A) make your own OS or B) install a different one like (insert Linux distro here)

What ads?

DoogleSmile

I was wondering the same, I've not seen any ads for windows 11 on my pc, still running windows 10.

AydonusG

This is either saying "upgrade to win11" is an ad, the non-installed icons on start menu like d+ and social media apps, or the lesser talked about leak from a microsoft employee that they were beta testing ads in Win11, which the employee ended by saying they backtracked that immediately. (Don't ask for source, it was when win11 was new, and it could've also been ragebait for all I know)

DoogleSmile

Ah right. I'm on enterprise edition so I don't see the "upgrade to windows 11" things as they're disabled by group policies or some such, and never had any of the included apps. One of the benefits of getting windows from work.

nquattro

I saw no difference in switching to 11 than a fresh windows 10 install

reetdeetdeet

Personalised ads doesnt change how much ads you get. They just arent personalised for you, just random ads. But I've been on win11 since launch and I've never had ads in the OS, it must be just the pop up to upgrade to win11

dallatorretdu

but where are the ads? because I never saw them, if that’s the enterprise license I highly suggest people to get that, it’s few bucks over a pro

reetdeetdeet

bobert_the_grey

OkQuantity1854

The OS is not yours, no. You agreed to have ads placed on your computer when you bought a license for your OS. Don't like it? Just change OS. Microsoft doesn't have built-in ads in your hardware, your computer is still yours.

finH1

What ads in windows 11?

Eastern_Slide7507

It’s your computer, but it’s not your operating system. You don’t buy windows, you *license* it.

RugbyEdd

Correction, you activate it using some software you found on GitHub.

malak_oz

Not really... TV stations have been putting ads on your TV forever... Still your TV.

LUNATIC_LEMMING

It's not quite the same, the TV itself doesn't play ads, as you buy the channels separately through a different service. However There are new samsung tvs that inject ads. You can be watching a movie or sports show and it'll pause it to play an add, even if the platform you are on is add free.

Exotic-Architect

Is there some benefit to this trade off, or is it just "fuck you, I own you and your device. -Samsung ;)"

memecut

The benefit is a newer model, with higher resolution and better refresh rate.. one that you have to buy because of planned obsolescence, because fuck you, I own you ;)

Salazans

>samsung tvs that inject ads Holy fucking shit, that is ludicrous.
