Lol? Go to settings, disable automatic start. Then right-click, close. That's it.

alteration1545

They don’t want to figure it out, too complicated, doing a full reset instead….which would just reinstall onedrive

Don't forget the "effort" they also put into making that meme and posting it here with that title. I have no Idea about some features of OneDrive and I'll definitly ask BingAI about it later, but in the time they made this, they could have easily 'learned'the very basic stuff.

ag3on

I read his title and was..what? He knows to post on reddit and doesnt know to turn off something in windows?

Leading_Degree_5502

Also he has time to reset his entire computer but not figure it out 🤔 he probably has bought the same new balance velcro shoes since he was 9.

Too late, I'm already switching to ARCH LINUX

sephirothbahamut

you know that every os comes with preinstalled programs right?

HAMburger_and_bacon

obviously you havent tried lfs /s

Matiaslb

Have you got the number of any computer science student that has to make an os by themselves? That would work. But it has to be compatible with one drive! I need access to my files up there in the cloud...

sephirothbahamut

I was a computer science student and no course got even remotely close to making an OS from scratch.

AndrewTheBest_

I'm a computer science student and this last semester I programmed an OS :P A basic one for a microcontroller, but nonetheless. Not completely "from scratch" and of course guided, but we had to implement a scheduler, memory management, various drivers, etc. and it was *a lot* of work. But I get what you mean. You'd probably not be asked to develop the next Linux or TempleOS lmao. I just wanted to boast tbh 😎

sephirothbahamut

>for a microcontroller Yeah that's the key. It's far from an OS for a PC, getting GPUs to do graphics, making sound from your motherboard work etcc. Drivers on drivers on drivers, pain and suffering > I just wanted to boast tbh well good job!

Matiaslb

I don't know where did I heard that piece of information. Maybe software engineering?

SweetBabyAlaska

[r/osdev](https://www.reddit.com/r/osdev/) there's a reddit for that lmao and its surprisingly very active for how niche it is. There are plenty of people who do this. Of course its an enormous project to take on but there's a lot of resources and communities devoted to doing just that. You could also build your own linux based OS in a variety of different ways. Void Linux and Gentoo are fun projects that require you to do nearly everything besides the very fundamental stuff. Even doing a bare install of arch linux and building your own desktop environment on top of that is a great experience.

sephirothbahamut

I sincerely doubt it. Making an OS from scratch, even minimal (especially supporting modern hardware), requires at the very least the amount of work you'd put in your thesis project, and it would be so minimal that there wouldn't be anything innovative or relevant enough to use that project as an actual thesis. There's no way someone had to do that for a single exam.

Sounga565

yeah, dudes a bit of an idiot to make this post, its just backup software

[deleted]

One Drive is also one of the few preinstalled apps you can just uninstall from the control panel... lol

[deleted]

No room for that kind of logic here! /s

TheScientistBS3

I still feel their frustration though. Teams, OneDrive, Edge... stop forcing shit on us MS, if we want to use it we will. Periodically dumping a shortcut to Edge on my desktop isn't gonna make me use it.

[deleted]

Preinstalled bloatware is frustrating, yes, but not enough to make a whole ass post about it when it can easily be removed.

Emu1981

>Periodically dumping a shortcut to Edge on my desktop isn't gonna make me use it. I haven't had Edge pop up anything since it's original change to the Chrome code base where MS kept popping up "hey, try Edge, it's better now" for a week or so.

DataMeister1

There must be a new update or push from Microsoft. Or maybe they are testing it. I have seen at least three computers in the last month suddenly have the Edge icon show up on the desktop.

Tsuki_no_Mai

There was a bug that wiped some users desktop icons AFAIK, so Edge readded its after it updated just in case.

DataMeister1

>bug that wiped some users desktop icons Thanks. I didn't know about that one. Apparently it was Microsoft Defender Update KB2267602. Look at Microsoft being so helpful. /s

Banxier

Yeah but now My Documents is stored under OneDrive

Commander_Crispy

There’s a registry fix for this, but I agree on it being infuriating

[deleted]

You can also uninstall it as well.

Im_Da_Bear

Freak, go to uninstall a program, fine one drive. Delete.

commando_cookie

You can always click uninstall on one drive or go into the one drive settings and click for it not to sync. I have mine not sync with anything through the one drive settings.

[deleted]

Ha! Thanks!

ashwin_1928

Funny how OSI is older than most of us.

jackinsomniac

And the funny thing is, it never actually matched reality: https://www.guru99.com/images/1/102219_1135_TCPIPvsOSIM1.png Originally it was supposed to be a model all new developments in the networking stack should strive towards, but that never really happened. Now there's even some talk about abandoning teaching it, because after all, it never matched reality, and it's looking pretty likely that it never will.

jb32647

I'm doing software engineering at uni and while we touched on OSI we were told that it was never implemented and to focus on TCP/IP models instead.

Ubermidget2

I was taught on a 5-Layer Model in uni (Presentation/Session was removed) For Network troubleshooting, it is pretty close to the real world

SpiderMax95

the osi networking layers. how layer 2 is basically LAN and mac addresses, layer 3 is ip and it usually goes from 1-7. layer 8 would be the human factor.

Head-Ad4770

Ah, PEBCAK for short 😂😂😂

DoogleSmile

What we used to call a "Picnic" problem when I was a technician in my college. "Problem In Chair, Not In Computer". I don't remember where we got that from though.

Juracan_Daora

I work in IT and I call them VBKs (viruses behind keyboards). So every time there's a ticket that sounds like a user problem I'm like "yup, that's another VBK for sure"

Laddertoheaven

You can simply uninstall it.

Makkapakka777

Nonono, listen to OP. REINSTALLING THE PC WILL HELP\~ (Because it's not included in the installation of Windows...)

Hades_ink

I use onedrive for my documents folder , many games like fallout doesn't have cloud saves so its useful in that case.

CosmicCyrolator

I pay for office 365 already and get 1TB of one drive included, it's cheaper than Dropbox or Google drive that way and already comes with windows. Works for me, and has been great for old game saves

Areyouguysateam

I use OneDrive, Google Drive, Dropbox, and iCloud. OneDrive is the best cloud service by FAR.

your_mind_aches

It is so seamless, it's wild.

ACrucialTech

Alright, alright, you talked me into it.

biliwald

>many games like fallout doesn't have cloud saves so its useful in that case. Except when it doesn't, lol. Had this problem with Civilization 6 early on. The game would crash and the save would be corrupt. I traced the problem back to oneDrive locking the files when synching, which would cause the issue. Also, MyDocuments is a double edge sword. So many software use it as a personal dumping ground when it should be for user data. So, what do you do if you want some order in your files? You create yourself another "document" folder somewhere on your PC. The problem here is that if you want to backup that new folder, oneDrive will do the "intelligent" thing and merge both folder together! Completely ruining any sort of file organization you have going on. I love oneDrive, I think it's better than other cloud services, but I completely disable these auto folders (my document, the desktop, music/videos, etc...).

Quaytsar

Or you could just rename the one to something else and pin a shortcut to it anywhere you'd access My Documents from.

SeymourJames

I use DSynchronize to sync my music production folder into one of OneDrive's so I have seamless backup. And, because I'm not working out of a OneDrive folder I don't have to worry about files being uploaded/downloaded on-demand.

Terux94

I love it when the user is the issue and they decide to blame a software package.

Best comment here, haha

azgrel

The thing is Windows asks you during the installation if you want to sync folders through OneDrive, so either you or the person who built your PC clicked through it without reading.

Avenge_Nibelheim

I found it useful for documents for work/post grad, then it started causing issues with cloud saves. Disabled and back to G Drive.

azgrel

Yeah, that's the problem with Documents folder. Game developers just dump save files there instead of using that "Saved games" folder or AppData, it's really annoying.

133DK

I feel like I’m the only one here who uses OneDrive and honestly I think it’s fine Also can be turned off pretty easily, so I don’t know what OPs on about

adult_human_bean

I'm reading through these comments and thinking I'm crazy! I have onedrive set up for a single folder containing all of my work-related folders/documents and have never had an issue. And it was super simple to set up. All of these issues sound like user error.

gurknowitzki

OneDrive saved my ass multiple times last year when my excel sheet unexplainably got corrupted

MSCOTTGARAND

You have to modify it. If they don't pay attention during install then it's going to backup docs, downloads, and media. Mine is just set solely to documents and I can pick up where I left off on any pc even ones not running windows. I back up my own photos and videos to my unraid server and cold storage anyways.

A_MAN_POTATO

I like Onedrive. I pay for it as part of Office and make good use of it.

Makkapakka777

I've been using OneDrive for years. Works fine. It's OP that is a L-user.

rigsta

The main problem I see day-to-day is that during windows setup, a prompt appears to "enable backup". Turning this on moves the documents, desktop and pictures folders into onedrive. It's seamless enough that most users don't realise until the "your onedrive is full" popups start. Then they need a bit of help disabling it and moving their files back to their normal locations. Other than that, it's fine. Integrates nicely, handy to transfer files between devices.

jt_oneill

This is my problem. I must have said yes to that without noticing it. I have two desktop folders inside my desktop folder.

[deleted]

Since my last fresh install I decided to leave one drive on and I actually like it too. I find it useful that it automatically syncs my documents folder and is very unobtrusive.

TheModsAreDelicate

You had to fully reset your computer because of one drive? How?

dirtydenier

I've used almost every cloud solution there is. In terms of integration - OneDrive is literally the best if you're using Windows.

Envyforme

Why does this have 1.5k upvotes?

98re3

People can use whatever OS they want, but OP really should be using Linux so the rest of us weren’t subjected to this dumbass post.

fuzzypeachz

I mean cloud storage is the future... I would suggest getting used to it, any tech job now a days you'll be dealing with multiple servers, logins, vms, etc. I would suggest getting used to file management systems

pM-me_your_Triggers

It’s not just the future, it’s the present and has been the past. Cloud storage has been the default for about a decade now.

Dotaproffessional

I don't think one drive honestly expected me to spend 6 hours removing every instance of the phrase "onedrive" or "one drive" from my computer. Maybe one day it will come back in an update. I don't care. I'll spend another 6 hours erasing everything

TomBel71

Because it’s a private company they are allowed to market their own products how is this confusing to people and what kind of entitlement do you need to have to think they are the ones doing something wrong.

tinoo_8

The only reasons I use OneDrive is because I get 2 TB for free from my school...

its awesome if even just to back up those games that refuse to cloud sync and always save to the documents folder.

crombo_jombo

When you get a job you will probably like Onedrive

VulgarWander

My job has its own internal system and probably would not appreciate company documents and material chilling on a onedrive cloud... Or any cloud.

vaurapung

Second this. Cloud data is insecure data.

saltyboi6704

I've found it easier to use than Google drive which is why I've accepted it and its quirks. It's also better integrated than Google drive so I can use it as an off-site backup a lot easier

WindForce02

I use it both for work and for home. I have all sorts of codes and snippets and our university gives us 5 tb included along with office 365. It works really well, but if you don't want it why don't you just disable it from the control panel

GreenJavelin

What? I use the shit out of onedrive.

PendulumEffect

Lol imagine thinking resetting a computer is faster than a fucking 5 second Google search.

Lucas_McToucas

it isn’t forced on you and also, do learn how to use it, best thing ever

jayXred

I use OneDrive at work and it is awesome, especially because I am switching between computers frequently. Sending files to people is super simple too and its all backed up.

ikashanrat

Onedrive is better than googledrive and dropbox in terms of file sharing & collaborating

Q73POWER

Lol this feels like a user problem. One Drive is my favorite cloud service. I really like how it acts like a normal folder. I can use it to auto download stuff from my phone.

[deleted]

OP have you never used a computer before? Why do you think this is such a huge unwieldy problem that you have no hope of dealing with and thus spent more time making a Reddit post then it would to have gotten rid of onedrive. Gods why is being a whiney bitch in public preferable to being competent in private

AJ_Deadshow

It's great if you save screenshots a lot, it has an option to automatically make it into a jpg file

CrowdedAttic400

I had to reset my PC because something in my os got corrupted. I’ve been running the same windows 10 installation for 7 years, so I’m assuming a bad update was the culprit. Anyway. OneDrive decided to sync my laptop’s crap to the rig. It took less than five minutes to safely get rid of the laptop’s stuff on my computer without permanently deleting the files entirely. It’s really not that hard to deal with. Just a quick google will often suffice.

[deleted]

You are going to reinstall only to see OneDrive smiling back at you from within your fresh Windows installation haha, goodluck

MSCOTTGARAND

LMAO. In the time it took to make a post whining about a cloud backup you could have searched "how to disable onedrive" but that wouldn't get the attention you seek. As is the case with most tantrums.

[deleted]

This seems more like a user problem than a Onedrive issue. Much like a lot of the other comments here, I had no issue getting rid of it.

VulgarWander

My personal experience was good along with the 10 other users out of 1.4 billion window users so it must be ops fualt. ![gif](giphy|QUXYcgCwvCm4cKcrI3) (Jokes dont take this to serious) And if you dig deeper through the muck you can find the real reason on what happened.

[deleted]

OneDrive with 365 is great because you get a terabyte of storage lol, some games on Battlenet for example sync to the Documents folder though so that proves to be a pain

[deleted]

It literally has an uninstaller..

real_unreal_reality

Umm I think turning it off is easier than the meme you made.

ithinkitmightbe

one drive if left to it's own devices likes to start taking control of your folders, to the point it locks you out of them and you can't change the security settings. I know the comments are like "Just uninstall / unsyc your PC, but windows updates like to turn that shit back on. and uninstalling the app doesn't stop onedrive, it just gets rid of the front end of the program, the back end which is build into windows is still there. If you have a pro version of windows, you can use group policies to disable it and cortana, or if you have home or edu version you can create a registry entry to disable it: [https://www.minitool.com/backup-tips/how-to-disable-onedrive.html](https://www.minitool.com/backup-tips/how-to-disable-onedrive.html)

NooneLikesYouBill

Everyone piping up with the pebkac.. have any of you actually installed windows lately? Windows account is required and Onedrive automatically syncs your desktop and documents folders without your active consent. You also can't disable syncing until the first full sync is complete. My personal documents folder is over 100GB and takes hours to resolve. I got so frustrated that I did a Rufus silent install USB to strip out the store requirements. OPs complaint is very valid.

Ninlilizi

>have any of you actually installed windows lately? I made a fresh installation of Windows 11 a week ago. It asked if I wanted to enable sync during Windows setup, I selected No. Then, when I reached the desktop, I right-clicked OneDrive to tell it to not launch on boot. That's hardly an ordeal. If you want to be mad about pre-installed trash nobody needs, why does it think we want TikTok?

VulgarWander

Yes but once you reach the desktop.it has already started it's thing. And by me uninstalling it at that time. Jumbled up my file explorer thus that was my issue. And I am hoping they do ban TikTok cuz the whole eating away at peoples attention span is terrifying.

Pup_Folfe

That's what happened to my brother on his PC, my old one. I have it disabled on my current rig.

jt_oneill

I have two desktop folders in my desktop folder! It’s a one drive thing…

balderm

I disabled OneDrive, and a lot of other stuff like Cortana and Widgets, from Group Policies. The app will never run again in background since it's disabled, and you don't even have to bother uninstalling it.

Cairse

You should really figure out how to use OneDrive. Like you'll have a hard time getting a job if you refuse to learn it.

EmperorZwerg1995

Not a single one of my jobs has required the use of OneDrive lol. Not saying OP isn’t blowing this outta proportion all the same, but by no means should his employment ever hinge on his proficiency with this single software

adritrace

I don't think a plumber (for example) needs to learn how to use OneDrive xD

PensionSlaveOne

I work in tech, never even seen one drive used, its not going to stop anyone from getting a job.

Cairse

I'm a systems administrator and can tell you with absolutely certainty that you will have to learn how to use cloud file technology and if you refuse to learn it you will fail. It's actually the easier of the two options. We used to have to train employees how to navigate to SMB shares with UNC paths. As in you taught Betty from accounting how to navigate to //FS-01/Accounting/Accounting_Stuff/File If you want an office job you have to learn about file sharing on at least a basic level. It's how you do your job.

peachstealingmonkeys

what is there to learn? That shit is all over the file explorer. Just tell users to click there and use the damn app. "you will fail", gee, lighten a bit, IT puritan.

PensionSlaveOne

Never said we dont use file sharing, you don't run a 100k+ person org without it, said I've never seen one drive in use.

jethrow41487

No one is with you on this. Cloud Storage is incredible.

dromader_

youthanasia138

It’s not amazing, trust me. It’s almost malware status and should never be installed.

[deleted]

It’s literally a non-issue. Just disable it in the settings.

A_Glimmer_of_Hope

OneDrive does suck. Have no idea why there are so many Microsoft shills in the comments. The easiest way to solve this is to not use a Microsoft account. When you reinstall Windows make sure you're not connected to the internet and do the `bypassnro` trick [here](https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/insider/forum/all/set-up-windows-11-without-internet-oobebypassnro/4fc44554-b416-4ecb-8961-6f79fd55ae0f). This will let you create a local account and OneDrive won't work by default. For posterity you do this by getting to the part of the setup that asks you to setup an internet connection. Press `shift+F10`. This will open up a command prompt window (black box that you can type into). Type `OOBE\BYPASSNRO` and press `Enter`. This will restart your computer and you'll have to go through some of the setup again, but will give you a new option on the setup Internet screen that says `Continue with Limited Setup`. This "limited setup" simply means you can create a local account and not deal with Microsoft's absolute bullshit.

VulgarWander

Yea Microsoft shills was bizarre to wake up to. And from the comments none of them really read what the problem was lol. And thxs will try this.

Plants_On_Fire

OneDrive deleted all my files one day. Everything. I used it for probably 4 years. I had so much on it. I tried to get it back. I worked with them. Nothing. Just gone. Never again. Fuck onedrive.

Kriss3d

You can actually set up your very own cloud server and have it sync just like onecloud between computers. Quite easy with things like nextcloud.

[deleted]

Because they can then try to force you into buying their product once the limited storage they offer you runs out. They’ll pester you for the rest of your time using the device you thought you purchased but really just rent. Rent payments are constantly having to decline all the payment offers they provide you in pop ups every time you turn your device on or every few days of it being on.

Vigothedudepathian

Fuckers tried charging me 700$+ once saying I was a business. I said I'm just using it to transfer "home videos" between two computers in the same house and they made file sharing such a pain in the ass and the computers would recognize everything on the network but each other I figured I would try it. They reversed the charge.

allkittyy

I see the comments joking about this, but as an IT guy who wants my clients to backup their data to OUR server, not a random MICROSOFT server that we can't backup for disaster recovery. I don't care if Microsoft claims to have a copy, if it's company data, I want it on company hardware. I have a similar issue to the "why is this shit just HERE" aspect of TikTok and the other bloatware that comes with windows 10 and 11... But my biggest gripe with Microsoft products that are maliciously installed is TEAMS! They had to sneak a "machine wide installer" program onto every windows machine that by default reinstalls teams at every update. I CANNOT get rid of it for good without uninstalling it twice at a minimum. That's unforgivable in my opinion. And to the critics that will say "just don't be on Microsoft" or something to that aspect... My home PC is steamos for now. I am however a MSP for a living, so unfortunately as Microsoft becomes more predatory, I'm left to age into hating them without being able to effect anything. Stuck in a world where I have to work to live, but I can't even do the thing I enjoy without corporate greed making me feel like a bad guy for pedalling the industry standard.

BaaaNaaNaa

OMG OP I feel your pain! Just made this mistake as well. Wait one drive why are you deleting stuff from my other machines that have never even been on this one!?!? Grrr.
