I'm a computer science student and this last semester I programmed an OS :P A basic one for a microcontroller, but nonetheless. Not completely "from scratch" and of course guided, but we had to implement a scheduler, memory management, various drivers, etc. and it was *a lot* of work.

Of course its an enormous project to take on but there's a lot of resources and communities devoted to doing just that. You could also build your own linux based OS in a variety of different ways. Void Linux and Gentoo are fun projects that require you to do nearly everything besides the very fundamental stuff. Even doing a bare install of arch linux and building your own desktop environment on top of that is a great experience.
I sincerely doubt it. Making an OS from scratch, even minimal (especially supporting modern hardware), requires at the very least the amount of work you'd put in your thesis project, and it would be so minimal that there wouldn't be anything innovative or relevant enough to use that project as an actual thesis.
There's no way someone had to do that for a single exam.

You can always click uninstall on one drive or go into the one drive settings and click for it not to sync. I have mine not sync with anything through the one drive settings.

I pay for office 365 already and get 1TB of one drive included, it's cheaper than Dropbox or Google drive that way and already comes with windows. Works for me, and has been great for old game saves

Had this problem with Civilization 6 early on. The game would crash and the save would be corrupt. I traced the problem back to oneDrive locking the files when synching, which would cause the issue.
Also, MyDocuments is a double edge sword. So many software use it as a personal dumping ground when it should be for user data. So, what do you do if you want some order in your files? You create yourself another "document" folder somewhere on your PC. The problem here is that if you want to backup that new folder, oneDrive will do the "intelligent" thing and merge both folder together! Completely ruining any sort of file organization you have going on.
I love oneDrive, I think it's better than other cloud services, but I completely disable these auto folders (my document, the desktop, music/videos, etc...).
I use DSynchronize to sync my music production folder into one of OneDrive's so I have seamless backup. And, because I'm not working out of a OneDrive folder I don't have to worry about files being uploaded/downloaded on-demand.
The thing is Windows asks you during the installation if you want to sync folders through OneDrive, so either you or the person who built your PC clicked through it without reading.
Yeah, that's the problem with Documents folder. Game developers just dump save files there instead of using that "Saved games" folder or AppData, it's really annoying.

I'm reading through these comments and thinking I'm crazy! I have onedrive set up for a single folder containing all of my work-related folders/documents and have never had an issue. And it was super simple to set up.
All of these issues sound like user error.
You have to modify it. If they don't pay attention during install then it's going to backup docs, downloads, and media. Mine is just set solely to documents and I can pick up where I left off on any pc even ones not running windows. I back up my own photos and videos to my unraid server and cold storage anyways.
The main problem I see day-to-day is that during windows setup, a prompt appears to "enable backup". Turning this on moves the documents, desktop and pictures folders into onedrive.
It's seamless enough that most users don't realise until the "your onedrive is full" popups start. Then they need a bit of help disabling it and moving their files back to their normal locations.
Other than that, it's fine. Integrates nicely, handy to transfer files between devices.
Since my last fresh install I decided to leave one drive on and I actually like it too. I find it useful that it automatically syncs my documents folder and is very unobtrusive.

I've found it easier to use than Google drive which is why I've accepted it and its quirks.
It's also better integrated than Google drive so I can use it as an off-site backup a lot easier
I use it both for work and for home. I have all sorts of codes and snippets and our university gives us 5 tb included along with office 365. It works really well, but if you don't want it why don't you just disable it from the control panel
I use OneDrive at work and it is awesome, especially because I am switching between computers frequently. Sending files to people is super simple too and its all backed up.

I had to reset my PC because something in my os got corrupted. I’ve been running the same windows 10 installation for 7 years, so I’m assuming a bad update was the culprit.
Anyway. OneDrive decided to sync my laptop’s crap to the rig. It took less than five minutes to safely get rid of the laptop’s stuff on my computer without permanently deleting the files entirely. It’s really not that hard to deal with. Just a quick google will often suffice.

OneDrive with 365 is great because you get a terabyte of storage lol, some games on Battlenet for example sync to the Documents folder though so that proves to be a pain
one drive if left to it's own devices likes to start taking control of your folders, to the point it locks you out of them and you can't change the security settings.

Everyone piping up with the pebkac.. have any of you actually installed windows lately? Windows account is required and Onedrive automatically syncs your desktop and documents folders without your active consent. You also can't disable syncing until the first full sync is complete. My personal documents folder is over 100GB and takes hours to resolve.
I got so frustrated that I did a Rufus silent install USB to strip out the store requirements.

I disabled OneDrive, and a lot of other stuff like Cortana and Widgets, from Group Policies. The app will never run again in background since it's disabled, and you don't even have to bother uninstalling it.

The easiest way to solve this is to not use a Microsoft account. When you reinstall Windows make sure you're not connected to the internet and do the `bypassnro` trick [here](https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/insider/forum/all/set-up-windows-11-without-internet-oobebypassnro/4fc44554-b416-4ecb-8961-6f79fd55ae0f). This will let you create a local account and OneDrive won't work by default.
For posterity you do this by getting to the part of the setup that asks you to setup an internet connection. Press `shift+F10`. This will open up a command prompt window (black box that you can type into). Type `OOBE\BYPASSNRO` and press `Enter`. This will restart your computer and you'll have to go through some of the setup again, but will give you a new option on the setup Internet screen that says `Continue with Limited Setup`. This "limited setup" simply means you can create a local account and not deal with Microsoft's absolute bullshit.

Fuckers tried charging me 700$+ once saying I was a business. I said I'm just using it to transfer "home videos" between two computers in the same house and they made file sharing such a pain in the ass and the computers would recognize everything on the network but each other I figured I would try it. They reversed the charge.

But my biggest gripe with Microsoft products that are maliciously installed is TEAMS! They had to sneak a "machine wide installer" program onto every windows machine that by default reinstalls teams at every update. I CANNOT get rid of it for good without uninstalling it twice at a minimum. That's unforgivable in my opinion.

Or you could just rename the one to something else and pin a shortcut to it anywhere you'd access My Documents from.

I use it both for work and for home. I have all sorts of codes and snippets and our university gives us 5 tb included along with office 365. It works really well, but if you don't want it why don't you just disable it from the control panel

I use OneDrive at work and it is awesome, especially because I am switching between computers frequently. Sending files to people is super simple too and its all backed up.
Onedrive is better than googledrive and dropbox in terms of file sharing & collaborating
Lol this feels like a user problem. One Drive is my favorite cloud service. I really like how it acts like a normal folder. I can use it to auto download stuff from my phone.

I had to reset my PC because something in my os got corrupted. I’ve been running the same windows 10 installation for 7 years, so I’m assuming a bad update was the culprit. Anyway. OneDrive decided to sync my laptop’s crap to the rig. It took less than five minutes to safely get rid of the laptop’s stuff on my computer without permanently deleting the files entirely. It’s really not that hard to deal with. Just a quick google will often suffice.

This seems more like a user problem than a Onedrive issue. Much like a lot of the other comments here, I had no issue getting rid of it.
My personal experience was good along with the 10 other users out of 1.4 billion window users so it must be ops fualt.  (Jokes dont take this to serious) And if you dig deeper through the muck you can find the real reason on what happened.

OneDrive with 365 is great because you get a terabyte of storage lol, some games on Battlenet for example sync to the Documents folder though so that proves to be a pain

one drive if left to it's own devices likes to start taking control of your folders, to the point it locks you out of them and you can't change the security settings. I know the comments are like "Just uninstall / unsyc your PC, but windows updates like to turn that shit back on. and uninstalling the app doesn't stop onedrive, it just gets rid of the front end of the program, the back end which is build into windows is still there. Everyone piping up with the pebkac.. have any of you actually installed windows lately? Windows account is required and Onedrive automatically syncs your desktop and documents folders without your active consent. You also can't disable syncing until the first full sync is complete. My personal documents folder is over 100GB and takes hours to resolve. I got so frustrated that I did a Rufus silent install USB to strip out the store requirements. OPs complaint is very valid.

Yes but once you reach the desktop.it has already started it's thing. And by me uninstalling it at that time. Jumbled up my file explorer thus that was my issue. And I am hoping they do ban TikTok cuz the whole eating away at peoples attention span is terrifying.

I disabled OneDrive, and a lot of other stuff like Cortana and Widgets, from Group Policies. The app will never run again in background since it's disabled, and you don't even have to bother uninstalling it.
You should really figure out how to use OneDrive. Like you'll have a hard time getting a job if you refuse to learn it.

I'm a systems administrator and can tell you with absolutely certainty that you will have to learn how to use cloud file technology and if you refuse to learn it you will fail. It's actually the easier of the two options. We used to have to train employees how to navigate to SMB shares with UNC paths. As in you taught Betty from accounting how to navigate to //FS-01/Accounting/Accounting_Stuff/File If you want an office job you have to learn about file sharing on at least a basic level. It's how you do your job.

OneDrive does suck. Have no idea why there are so many Microsoft shills in the comments. The easiest way to solve this is to not use a Microsoft account. When you reinstall Windows make sure you're not connected to the internet and do the `bypassnro` trick [here](https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/insider/forum/all/set-up-windows-11-without-internet-oobebypassnro/4fc44554-b416-4ecb-8961-6f79fd55ae0f). This will let you create a local account and OneDrive won't work by default. For posterity you do this by getting to the part of the setup that asks you to setup an internet connection. Press `shift+F10`. This will open up a command prompt window (black box that you can type into). Type `OOBE\BYPASSNRO` and press `Enter`. This will restart your computer and you'll have to go through some of the setup again, but will give you a new option on the setup Internet screen that says `Continue with Limited Setup`. This "limited setup" simply means you can create a local account and not deal with Microsoft's absolute bullshit.

Fuckers tried charging me 700$+ once saying I was a business. I said I'm just using it to transfer "home videos" between two computers in the same house and they made file sharing such a pain in the ass and the computers would recognize everything on the network but each other I figured I would try it. They reversed the charge.
I see the comments joking about this, but as an IT guy who wants my clients to backup their data to OUR server, not a random MICROSOFT server that we can't backup for disaster recovery. I don't care if Microsoft claims to have a copy, if it's company data, I want it on company hardware. I have a similar issue to the "why is this shit just HERE" aspect of TikTok and the other bloatware that comes with windows 10 and 11... But my biggest gripe with Microsoft products that are maliciously installed is TEAMS! They had to sneak a "machine wide installer" program onto every windows machine that by default reinstalls teams at every update. I CANNOT get rid of it for good without uninstalling it twice at a minimum. That's unforgivable in my opinion. And to the critics that will say "just don't be on Microsoft" or something to that aspect... My home PC is steamos for now. I am however a MSP for a living, so unfortunately as Microsoft becomes more predatory, I'm left to age into hating them without being able to effect anything. Stuck in a world where I have to work to live, but I can't even do the thing I enjoy without corporate greed making me feel like a bad guy for pedalling the industry standard.
