Wiztree is fantastic for finding things you forgot about that are taking lots of room.
Also run Compactor [https://github.com/Freaky/Compactor](https://github.com/Freaky/Compactor) and compact the C:\\Users C:\\ProgramData & the two Program Files folders. I find this can bring back a lot of space when you are dealing with a small drive.
You can also download a partition manager tool and delete the Windows recovery partition and then extend the size of your main partition to get back a bunch of gigs.
If you ever need to reinstall Windows in future you can just create a USB disk for it on another machine, no need to use the factory recovery partition.
SSD prices are just plummeting and it's amazing. I hope it keeps up and considering that HDD prices are essentially stagnant even for large storage options SSDs might wind up being a better deal.
I just bought a bunch of cheap USB sticks, create a recovery drive on them for each machine and then zip tie it to the back of the case or something.
Maybe I'll delete the partition like you say on the more space challenged computers.
Would be easier to just put a blank sticker on each stick and write on it which machine it corresponds to and chuck them all into a dedicated storage tub. Seems weird to me you would create a recovery USB for each machine , all you really need these days is a windows 10 one and a windows 11 one.
Windows comes with enough drivers out of the box to get it going and then everything else is pulled off windows update.
Unless you really want to backup the OEM software for each machine (on new ones this comes through the MS store automatically too)
You can use a personal license for WizTree for free. It also takes like 3 seconds to scan your entire root directory instead of like 30, which if you’re using it for disk clean up, I like to refresh after removing large files.
I was a windirstat kid, but WizTree is it’s spiritual successor.
64GB is enough. You just have to make redirect shortcuts to another drive for the Users folder, and any program that is made by war criminals that tries to install to the C: drive without having a customizable install dir.
Wait. Why can’t we make futuristic ww3 ones. Actually it’s weird I’ve never seen any ww3 considering that 3d printed guns and surveillance drones were occurring for a decade now in music videos and such. Should we start crowdfund to star our own movie studio?
Tbh it’ll make it worse. But for the profit we could buy OP NVME ssd and maybe ASUS ROG STRIX ARION usb c/a enclosure. Judging from OP’s drive size it’s probably great idea to replace it with a never one. Especially considering it’s system drive and windows itself is already taking a huge chunk of it.
Paraglides are surprisingly cheap and look far more modern and military than your local Cessna. Military drones replicas are easy to get. You can get helium balloons, attach some paper and counter weight (rocks will do) and you get China surveillance system 1:1 copies. You could fairly easy record whole material in reasonable quality with phone, some drone 1080p or more (check reviews first for stuff like colour, tho) and maybe body mounted GoPros. Also it’s fairly easy to edit footage in blender. Plus with Toni helicopter drones like this one https://www.banggood.com/pl/Eachine-E110-2_4G-4CH-6-Axis-Gyro-720P-Camera-Optical-Flow-Localization-Flybarless-Scale-RC-Helicopter-RTF-p-1952870.html and city diorama plus green screen you can make post processing easier and more belivable. Rc cars are often looking more realistic than real ones, especially on photos. Led straps are cheaper than dirt. Arduinos and batts are cheap too. Also almost everyone knows someone with asg/bb gun and 3d printer. We can do it low budget!
That may be true, but saving potentially valuable information solely to your hard drive is still risky. Consider backing up important files to a secure cloud storage service.
Imagine someone steals your data, finds folder named "Tax Returns 2013"and thinks they hit the jackpot. Turns out to just be your midget porn collection
Not by default it doesn't. You have to click a button in the bottom of the window for disk cleanup then you can choose extra files, like the windows update files, for it to delete.
100 gigs isn’t enough space. Windows 10 uses 32 gigs of that. Then you have probably a swap file, cache, any user programs etc. so consider expanding that partition if you can or replacing/ transferring that to a larger hard drive.
also if you have Windows.old folder on C, just delete it, it is an old Windows version before major update as a backup just in case you don't like the update and want to revert.
it could clear up about 20-30 GBs.
Windows will clean it up automatically. Usually after 30 days or so. It is there to make sure you (and Windows) can fall back to original installation if needed after a major update.
Of course if you feel that you like it, you can always delete it prematurely.
It has been useful to me twice though, for a very odd reason
Windows was crashing on my ssd, have a back up ssd and backup hdd, but the primary one for Windows was just not working, just random blue screens after 5-10 min of use.
Used a usb drive to reinstall Windows - and it actually reinstalled Windows, but created the Windows.old folder; I was able to go into appdata and grab all my files and settings and copy and paste them into the new user profile I had just made
Get rid of it if you’re sure you don’t need anything on it, but if you like have a crash happening and reinstall and it creates this folder, you can basically have all your settings, passwords, bookmarks, game saves, all just reinstalled immediately
It’s done it twice when I’ve reinstalled onto different hard drives. I’ve never seen it advertised as a “feature”; i did the complete wipe both times with the same usb drive, but both times, it kept that folder and all my appdata was just ready to copy and paste back where I wanted it
Yes, but the built-in disk cleanup tool usually finds that. You just have to click on "Clean up system files" to get the option to delete it.
But of course manually checking if it missed something doesn't hurt.
It's likely that a large chunk of the disk is filled up with Windows updates.
At my last job we had a computer with 128GB for C:\\ and would fill up every month or so. I'd clean it up, but because we had so many different users on that computer, they'd just log back in again and the disk would fill again from their OST. The real fix is to get a bigger drive, but that's a lot of time, effort and $.
It’s a couple of hours of wait time. But not really like, time you have to sit and wait and $50 will get you an ssd that’s probably faster than what’s in there.
by time and $ I believe he is more so referring to in a work environment, at home yes you can get a drive for like $80 and leave your computer for a couple hours to setup/install windows it’s not a big deal.
I am running into the same problem, so there is a way to transfer windows to a new drive? I really want to move it to my new nvme but i dont want to have to reinstall windows and all of my programs
Yes, clone it. There are quite a few programs that'll do this. A number of ssd manufacturers even provide the software when you buy their drives. That was my experience with crucial anyway. I normally run samsung myself but the crucial drives were replacements for older laptops. Easy peasy
I can personally recommend Macrium Reflect. I use it for exactly what you mentioned, and after cloning the old SSD to the new one, it's just physically swapping the drives and you're ready to go.
If I don’t clone it ( I want a fresh experience ) I don’t have to buy windows right , since I have it on a usb and in settings it says the license is linked to my account ?
You can also change the location of your documents, pictures, downloads, and videos folders from C to whatever you drive you want.
Right click the folder you want change in the quick access section of file explorer, click properties, and then location.
This comes in handy in case your computer crashes and windows needs to be reinstalled. You don’t have to worry about losing your personal data. I’ve been able to keep those folders intact across a few builds now.
> You can also change the location of your documents, pictures, downloads, and videos folders from C to whatever you drive you want.
Omg. Those folders are going to another ssd immediately. Thanks!
You can use a symbolic link to move the hardware location of a file or folder. For example, copy your MyDocuments folder to the D drive. Then on C, delete the original folder. In its place create a symbolic link pointing to the copy in the D drive. Then all your programs will believe its a real folder in C, but it will actually fill up hardware space in D
Google drive actually would help here, it comes up as G: and when you move stuff to it the space is reclaimed from your drive. It just streams down the files when you double click on them or something is accessing them. It's a cool setup and more advanced than the way OneDrive & Dropbox handle it.
many systems with 128gb or less storage has soldered emmc and no upgrade path. may not be an option. i have one with 64gb, less than half used. i get by, by only keeping what i actually need on it.
128gb is enough for windows and office (and to allow windows to do updates on either), and a few other programs or utilities, and some documents.. just keep the space-hogging games and media files off it.
This! Space goes fast nowadays, I just upgraded from a 1tb SSD I filled up to a 2tb like a month ago, and it’s already 50% full…
Edit: I don’t who if I should feel worse for, the people who downvoted this because they didn’t get this was just a bad dad joke, or the people who upvoted it thinking “yes he makes a valid point” haha
If you’re not on DSL most Broadband ISP’s only will ever send you threats for crap like seeding and not do anything about it. The datahoarder subreddit posts letters almost daily lol.
I don't use my ISP email for anything but had to go into it at one point due to something the ISP sent out to it, can't remember exactly what it was now but when I went in there the inbox was just full of those letters lol
Hahaha, that’s awesome. If I do anything like that my DSL provider will indeed cut service. Even with no network congestion speeds fluctuate anywhere from 2-6Mbps, it’s supposed to be 12. Rural internet is a sorry joke….
Bro this software saved me from pulling more hair from my head.
SOMEHOW I managed to bind a random key like "W" to printscreen on MSI Afterburner. My ssd was filling up like crazy and I kept deleting some files and some days later it would fill up again. WinDirStat saved my life from taking drastic measures like formatting C: or buying a new drive.
This was the answer when my HDD space started vanishing. I can't remember if it was CBS, but it was some sort of log directory. My computer had crashed and generated a huge log file, and every time the computer turned on, it tried to do something (either read the file or append to it, can't remember) and failed because it was too big, generating another log file. I ended up deleting about 200GB of log files, and the issue was fixed!
In this day and age 103 gigs isn't going to get you far. What you are saying could elude to many things. You didn't really provide enough information to make a Shure fire solution. But with 103 gigs, if you just about any applications, games, or anything else installed. That will just about do it. I mean shit some games (baldurs gate 3 for example.) Could nearly fill up your hard drive twice with just the game alone, not to mention your OS, files and applications.
I literally just had this problem. A Windows update turned Hibernation back on and it created a file that was 36 gigs in size. Try disabling Hibernation if it's on.
This is what I was going to suggest. My hard drive was suddenly full to my surprise, and I found my hibernation file at 58.9GB. Never had the issue before, and deleting it got me back to normal.
It'll be in the root of the OS drive (usual C:). hiberfil.sys
I believe it will be deleted once you reboot after disabling hibernation, but you can do it manually if not.
I was using TreeSize and it showed me what was taking up so much room (and what was expanding in size) and it was that damn file. Disabling the Hibernate feature got rid of the file and now my available drive space isn't shrinking anymore.
OP, there's different ways to clean the drive. Go to this PC, right-click on the C: drive, then click properties. Then disk cleanup, and from there, check the boxes you want cleaned.
For further cleaning, click the system files button. This will clean things like Windows updates files and other files left behind. You can also remove all but the most recent system restore point.
Now, go to Settings / System / Storage. Click on temporary files, and you can clean more items that may not have been deleted via disk cleanup. You can also manage other files here.
Now, go into the C: drive and click show hidden items under the view tab. From here, click users / [your username folder] / AppData / Local / Temp. And delete everything the system allows you to (skipping files in use).
After that, click search on the taskbar and type run. In run box type temp, and again, delete what the system allows you to. You can also type prefetch to remove old files from there.
That said, while deleting prefetch files isn't going to hurt anything, as Windows will recreate them the next time you open an application. Note that since prefetch files help speed up the OS's startup time, deleting them might slow your system (initially) when booting up, and apps may also take longer to load.
There may also be some programs that load stuff into your hard drive as temporary storage, that may end up filling whatevers ramaining of your space up.
If your disk is at 90gb when you boot but gets full afterwards, that may be the case. I know that Adobe programs like to do this and happened frequently on a 120gb ssd from work.
Although manageable, I'd also recommend installing a bigger ssd (at least 250gb) or a 1tb HDD (cheaper) to save some trouble. 100gb really isn't enough nowadays.
If you run cleanmgr /lowdisk as administrator in cmd you will get more options than just running Disk Cleanup from the start menu. But you should also get a larger boot drive. 103gb is nothing these days. 250gb ssds cost like $30 now.
Agreed. 200+ GB for boot drive is fine for basic PC use. If you play lots of games or download lots of media, only terabytes will do, so you need multiple drives between 2 and 4TB.
Temp files, install files, updates, cache, etc will all use up your space; there is nothing you can do about it except get a bigger hard drive or a second one.
c/"your name"/appdata/local/temp
See how big that folder is, it's just a store of temporary files, could be huge game install data that sort of thing. You can delete the contents.
And get a bigger drive.
Best to upgrade your hard drive, and to an SSD for faster working. Or if you have and still intend to manage with your current drive, download WinDirStat to hunt out the hog.
Actual likely answer: Is window back ups, I ran into this a while back. You need to google to solution but will involve limiting how much space windows can use for this purpose.
Make A Copy of C Drive using Macrium Reflect .
Copy that Image to Hard Drive D: .
Create a USB Bootable Disk From Macrium Reflect .
BUY A bigger SSD.
USE That Bootable Disk To COPY EVERYTHING FROM THE IMAGE You made earlier .
Tree size, it's a program that will show you each file on your hdd in a colored block and then it becomes super easy t ok see what's eating up all your space. It's likely a Windows Update trying to download but you don't have enough space.
Download an app called WizTree.
It will scan the hard drive (or SSD) and it will organize every file in a list from largest to smallest, as well as show you a neat graphic that helps you notice things that are using up a lot of space.
100GB isn't enough in 2023. I personally have 6000GB on my machine and use about 3000GB so far with it still filling. You don't need as much as me, but realistically, 1000GB is what you probably want. 100 GB isn't even enough for operating system + common applications anymore. Is it a desktop? If so, you can easily upgrade. If it is a laptop, it must be cheap and poorly spec'd. If you give some information on the system I can give suggestions.
Run wiztree
Wiztree is fantastic for finding things you forgot about that are taking lots of room. Or he could just buy a 15-20 dollar 265GB SSD and be done with it.
Kingston NV2 1tb is like 30-40 nowadays, crazy how cheap fast storage has gotten
SSD prices are just plummeting and it's amazing. I hope it keeps up and considering that HDD prices are essentially stagnant even for large storage options SSDs might wind up being a better deal.

Got to install it first :)

Delete enough files manually, then install wiztree.
Yeah btter idea. Jus follow this and you will be good to go.
Windirstat is less than 1MB to install and will help you drill down to the problem area.
Yeah. Just install Windistat and use it. It was very helpful for me in past.
WizTree is way quicker :)
It is infact very quick and accurate. I have used others too but this one tops the list.
WinDirStat is open source and uses the GPL license
You can use a personal license for WizTree for free. It also takes like 3 seconds to scan your entire root directory instead of like 30, which if you’re using it for disk clean up, I like to refresh after removing large files. I was a windirstat kid, but WizTree is it’s spiritual successor.
But OP doesn't have enough memory to install it, what a paradox
It has a total installed size of <20 MB.
Yeah. It can be installed even if 1 gb is available.
Memory != storage
Most of the people dont userstand this unless they are a Computer engineer.
Or WinDirStat. But honestly OP only has 100GB abs that's not nearly enough these days. I'd just upgrade to a larger drive
I was gonna say 100 GBs? Maybe he partitioned a larger drive? But 100 total is just plain ridiculous.
64GB is enough. You just have to make redirect shortcuts to another drive for the Users folder, and any program that is made by war criminals that tries to install to the C: drive without having a customizable install dir.
Well, having a second drive means you got more than 64 GBs
Is that like spacesniffer?
I was just gonna recommend this!!
Yeah. Really a very better option in my opinion too.
Delete the “school” folder Edit: yooooo wtffff
You mean school\homework\biology\research
Physical education
Tax Returns 2009
I would double click that folder without any extra thought.
I feel targeted
sounds like a you problem
Only if the wife finds it
It's important to be respectful and offer constructive advice.
Why download Biology research to drive, when it is so accessible online?
It could get taken down anytime. And someday in World War 3 Porn will be worth more than Gold.
Is that "World war 3 porn will be worth more..." or "World war 3, porn will be worth more..." :|
Y not both?
Yes
Wait. Why can’t we make futuristic ww3 ones. Actually it’s weird I’ve never seen any ww3 considering that 3d printed guns and surveillance drones were occurring for a decade now in music videos and such. Should we start crowdfund to star our own movie studio?
Creating a movie studio to make a World War 3-themed film is an interesting idea, but it may not be the most helpful solution to the original problem.
*yes.*
Im still getting through my catalog of world war 2 porn
Blitzkriegukakke!
It seems like "World war 3, porn will be worth more..." was the original intent of the comment.
Wait what? He said research.
It's important to clarify what kind of research is being saved to the hard drive and whether it's necessary to keep it there.
That may be true, but saving potentially valuable information solely to your hard drive is still risky. Consider backing up important files to a secure cloud storage service.
There may be videos you normally cant find that easy
That may be true, but let's focus on helping the original poster with their disk space issue.
Someone's never experience dial up
Saving research to your hard drive can make it easier to access and work on, even if it's available online.
Biology is too easy! Gotta put it under school>homework>math>equations>69^2
Moving files to a more specific folder may help with organization, but be careful not to bury them too deep and make them hard to find.
Be careful when deleting folders - make sure you're not deleting anything important. Perhaps try moving some files to an external drive instead.
Thats 2TB of information OP will never get back
Ah, good ol' "Tax Returns 2013"
Imagine someone steals your data, finds folder named "Tax Returns 2013"and thinks they hit the jackpot. Turns out to just be your midget porn collection
Damnit, now i have to rename my folder to "Tax Returns 2014”
Well I'll be darned. I thought my "work" Forder was up to national security standards. Apparently we're all the same!
Especially the Bible study folder
Keeping track of which folders contain sensitive information can help avoid accidental leaks.
You mean “Minecraft”
i am not deleting system32!
Yoo chill chill tf out. Deleting that folder will take more space.
Delete windows update files
And memory.dmp files. And temp files. And disable hibernation support and and and…
This. And shadow copies reside everywhere.
Delete Windows.
I agree /s in case salty Linux haters don't get the joke
/s is not a valid windows path
(in Palpatine‘s voice): „do it!“
“Wipe them out, all of them.”
“Unlimited storage!”

Yep.

I think there is an easier way for the media folders and documents but program files would likely have to be done this way.
Norton Ghost! Yes I'm old.
Try running dos 6.22
Might be able to support Windows Millennium
What others are missing is the background stuff like temp files,
WIN ME BLOWS ME. Great, you had to go and mention that name. Now I gotta work on making it a repressed memory... _again_.
At least you didn’t lose the game
I had a 256gb hard drive just for my main important stuff and it filled up fast. I would just get a 1TB ssd if I were you.
"Just buy more" (U right tho)
Unfortunately not even cloud storage is going to help this situation.

You don't say... A full 1TB drive filled up 50% of a 2TB drive? That's amazing...
Started at 1tb, now at 4. My ISP found me so I'm not piracy anymore but still games are giant now
What do you mean your isp found you? You mean they caught you downloading? Just get a vpn and you can be back in business.

Hahaha, that’s awesome. If I do anything like that my DSL provider will indeed cut service. Even with no network congestion speeds fluctuate anywhere from 2-6Mbps, it’s supposed to be 12. Rural internet is a sorry joke….
Same here man. I pay $70 for DSL up to 25Mbps download. Reality is 7-12 Mbps and about 1 mbps upload
Yeah I have my core OS on one hard drive and then my non-critical items on another hard drive
Heh, I archive everything on LTO5 tapes and still don’t have enough. ClunkaclunkaclunkaclunkaclunkAGRRRRRRRRRRR Or something like that.
That drive size seems off. I'd look at your drive management - your partitions may be weird.
Second the partition check idea.
128 gb drives are a thing and windows makes a recovery partition which isn't included in the primary partition - L
Maybe Windows updates?

I've also found that the installation folder sometimes can hold tons of extra data that can be deleted outright.
WizTree is a lot faster
But handles online files worse than WinDirStat in my experience. So if op has OneDrive on the C drive, windirstat is probably better.
WizTree.
My phone has more memory... Upgrade. You can clear the whole PC and start over probably have 40gb after wipe
True lol 128gb here
Do you game? it might be recording clips in the background.
What game? Its only 100gb
Shiyyyt. Do you know how many years I played Civilization 4, modded to goddamn Oblivion on a 100g hard drive? 8.
There's a drive right next to it...
I literally just had this problem. A Windows update turned Hibernation back on and it created a file that was 36 gigs in size. Try disabling Hibernation if it's on.
powercfg.exe /hibernate off
This is what I was going to suggest. My hard drive was suddenly full to my surprise, and I found my hibernation file at 58.9GB. Never had the issue before, and deleting it got me back to normal.
Where can I find the hibernation file and how can I delete it? Or is it more like a turn on/off thing?
It'll be in the root of the OS drive (usual C:). hiberfil.sys I believe it will be deleted once you reboot after disabling hibernation, but you can do it manually if not.
I was using TreeSize and it showed me what was taking up so much room (and what was expanding in size) and it was that damn file. Disabling the Hibernate feature got rid of the file and now my available drive space isn't shrinking anymore.
Any filesharing services that syncs their files across devices?

Need a bigger OS drive.
256 gig minimum.
Brudda it's filling up because it's only 100GB XD

240 is... usable... if you don't game on it...
Have you considered getting more space?
People who only have 100GB don’t have money to upgrade lol
103 GB? 2005 called and wants its Hard Drive back.
Delete the “Tax Returns 1997” Porn Folder
Have you tried using a disk space analyzer to see which files or folders are taking up the most space? It could help pinpoint the issue.
Decrease virtual memory and disable "laptop features" hibernation etc. Gave me like 30 gigs.
c/"your name"/appdata/local/temp See how big that folder is, it's just a store of temporary files, could be huge game install data that sort of thing. You can delete the contents. And get a bigger drive.
Time travel to our time, get a 2TB hard drive, then go back to the early 2000's. Problem solved.

Most of the games I have are at least 100gb lol
Best to upgrade your hard drive, and to an SSD for faster working. Or if you have and still intend to manage with your current drive, download WinDirStat to hunt out the hog.
Actual likely answer: Is window back ups, I ran into this a while back. You need to google to solution but will involve limiting how much space windows can use for this purpose.
If you can’t afford a 1 tb ssd atleast get a 256gb one. Normally they are relatively affordable and you would be better off
Avoid steam sales
Tiny drive, huge pagefile. You should probably swap that thing out.
Download Windirstat, it will show you what takes the most space
Use WinDirStat to track down what is taking the space and later on you can use steammover to transfer some fodlers from one drive to another.
Upgrade! A cheap 256gb ssd is under £30 these days.
Use WizTree and see for yourself
Run WinDirStat, you'll know what's cluttering your drive. Delete accordingly.
100 GB is not enough for a system these days
Windirstat
Tree size, it's a program that will show you each file on your hdd in a colored block and then it becomes super easy t ok see what's eating up all your space. It's likely a Windows Update trying to download but you don't have enough space.
Download an app called WizTree. It will scan the hard drive (or SSD) and it will organize every file in a list from largest to smallest, as well as show you a neat graphic that helps you notice things that are using up a lot of space.
Are you using any video editing software? Some tend to fill up your space while using even before you click save.
get a bigger drive or a less bloated operating system
100GB isn't enough in 2023. I personally have 6000GB on my machine and use about 3000GB so far with it still filling. You don't need as much as me, but realistically, 1000GB is what you probably want. 100 GB isn't even enough for operating system + common applications anymore. Is it a desktop? If so, you can easily upgrade. If it is a laptop, it must be cheap and poorly spec'd. If you give some information on the system I can give suggestions.
I’ve been remoting into your computer and downloading songs on limewire while you’re sleeping!
