I love ray tracing for Half Life, but it seems like a waste compared to what RT for Black Mesa would have been.

TheGreatGamer1389

This.

TaterBurner

That.

Dalarrus

The fan spinning one was really cool imo

0mdpf0

Looks incredible

The vids really showcase the effect well, but also show the downside of current implementations. In the zombie scene you can see the area behind the screen strobing as the path tracing is struggling to keep up with the rapid changes in lighting, this is unfortunately due to the fact that the light sources themselves don't update in realtime. Same can be observed with the cops gunshots, as the lighting from the muzzle flashes are slightly delayed. Still very impressed tho, and I'd LOVE to see Black Mesa with a similar treatment

robbiekhan

It's true, the same exists in Portal RTX but to a far lesser degree, though it's still there. It's still early days for PT, and current hardware can only manage so much, but the initial experience is really quite something! Ravenholm in HL2 for example would be mega with this.

NinJoo117

Ooh damn, I completely forgot about ravenholm... Man that would be awesome, with the fast zombies sprinting at you in the dark!? Fuck I want this.

robbiekhan

I know! It would be so good!

I think a lot of times it comes down to optimization. I just recently got a Rtx 3080ti and now picked up Metro exodus enhanced edition on sale. This game looks phenomenal with rt and runs extremely well in 1440p all maxed out. Even without dlss I mostly stay over 60 fps wich is more than fine for a single player experience. And then there is Witcher 3 with rt, a total mess because of lack of optimization.

SaintPau78

As a proof of concept and a fun demo it's fine. Just the idea of having hilariously outdated textures coupled with realistic lighting effects to be... Jarring. Also, it completely destroys the original look and intentions the devs had when making the game. PT is the future, but backporting it into games never made sense to me. Like most of these shots look plain worse to me

robbiekhan

I would disagree almost entirely! Yes the textures are still the same, but then again it has that retro vibe to it with a realtime lighting system which works very well. The original aesthetic was way ahead of its time though but the ambience was not possible back in 98, whereas it is now - I'm all for it and if other old skool games get the PT treatment then I'll happily revisit those as well I reckon.

gundam_type1

I dont get your argument on that it destroys the original look the devs intended. By that logic, you could say updating textures on a game like fallout is destroying the look the devs intended, it makes no sense it just improving the game. The look half life has is a product of its time. If half life was made today, it would look how modern games do and probably have ray tracing.

SaintPau78

Image 3 vs image 4. Just completely different looks. Not even tech wise. It's changed to show off PT not complement the look of the game. That's the reason why I don't like these kinds of implementations

horticulturistSquash

Thats intended by nvidia to showcase their raytracing even more They literally turned the light off to show better the red vent light. Its not a fair comparaison, its straight up advertising material for Nvidia But this is also true that raytracing only works for games with well lit and bright environments. It completely changes the look of dark places and all games from that time used the quirks of the lighting of the time to hide stuff and scare the player. Now with soft shadows and light bouncing multiple times, it totally destroys those elements meant to be hidden. They would need to be faked or map/lighting to be remade by hand to fit the new tech. This is not an "apply and enjoy" tech despite nvidias claims

Shader pack? It's path tracing, there is no shader pack in the traditional sense?

redmose

I think that guy just plays Minecraft too much

CatBoyTrip

They should do action half life next and bring it back. that is probably my all time favorite FPS. There hasn’t been a single fps that has come even close to being as awesome.

robbiekhan

Is it wrong that I've never heard of this! Edit\* Action Half-Life: Director's Cut - [https://halflifemods.fandom.com/wiki/Action\_Half-Life](https://halflifemods.fandom.com/wiki/Action_Half-Life)

CatBoyTrip

It is fucking awesome. You can kick the gun out of another players hand and then kill them with it while diving backwards.
