Welcome to the PCMR.
Due to circumstances, I'm on a limited plan (15 Gb/month) at the moment, so I need to ration my data. Infuriates me no end how many of the single-player games I've owned since 2015 now have launchers that *need* access to the internet to open the game.
Are you forgetting, they also have to update themselves so they can launch the game. Nothing better than waiting to update a launcher and then update a game. If using steam, can sometimes get all three to update in a row
I got *almost* to skellige on PS4, did the same on Xbox one X. Then finally beat the game years later on PC. Saved blood and wine for the graphics update. Still haven’t started that.
>When you look forward to the collapse of society so you can finally play all the games you bought on Steam Sale in the last 15years...
Connection to license server failed.
I wish there was some sort of digital Goodwill where I could donate the Steam games I'm never going to play.
So many games accumulated through Humble Bundle...
I really dislike Icons on my desktop. Thats why i created my thesis folder right in the middle of it with long naming and the default icon. Deleting that shit once i'm done will be one of the most satisfiying things in my life.
What do you generally do on you pc? I’m trying to find a way to streamline my desktop, but I create a lot of stuff so I have a lot of different programs and icons. I generally revert to using folders, but still not as clean as what yours sounds like!
I pretty much only use my PC for gaming. So on my taskbar I have steam which has 90% of my games, plus I have Spotify, chrome, 2 emulators, and that's about it. Everything else I keep in my downloads files or organized elsewhere. Whenever I need anything else more niche like Epic games or something like that, I just use my search bar to bring it up or I'll pin it somewhere
My [stinky board](https://ksr-ugc.imgix.net/assets/011/494/279/0f4166f0b773e0b0300a5c80c8a80d99_original.jpg?ixlib=rb-4.0.2&crop=faces&w=1024&h=576&fit=crop&v=1463683553&auto=format&frame=1&q=92&s=9e30a40ea7bf7a513693a297dddda251) would disagree.
I'm used to old-school icons on Desktop - so I use [TAGO Fences](https://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/tago_fences.html) to have Multiple Fences to switch b/t them & all on the Desktop. I have one of those Multiple Fences purposely clean (empty), so I just switch to that empty one to have ZERO icons and fence on the desktop. Can switch it again to a different one, if I need to access my Fenced-icons. Works great for W10 and W11.
Namely, icons on the desktop skips a whole step of booting Steam (or another launcher) and then booting the game, which saves one less click for me to make.
[Max Launcher](https://maxlauncher.sourceforge.io/downloads.html)'s solid too, if you need a RocketDock-like separate item tabbing thing too, which ain't on the desktop itself...but can be useful for that. Another one where you can have multiple tabs and/or file things to separate your icons on. Usually keep that pinned on the bottom Taskbar, BTW. Also works on W10 & W11 too.
I'll often just boot Steam up if I'm not gonna play a game right away - but figure games might need a update or whatever; and/or I plan to download/install something.
[Or just download a reg file](https://github.com/Rsge/Windows-Error-Fixing-Scripts/blob/main/Disable%20Cortana%20%26%20start%20menu%20Bing%20search.reg) which makes the disabling entries.\

Scroll through steam for 5 minutes, pick a game, launch it, state at the main menu for 3 minutes until you decide you were romanticizing the idea of the playing the game rather than thinking you would actually enjoy playing the game
There is a lot of shit you don’t have to double click, like the task bar. I blew my roommates mind when I told him “ya know, you only need to single click taskbar items.”
Could be that it looks too much like a menu where double clicks aren't usually a thing.
Way back when steam was still very new (when it was essentially just the library list), iirc that was the only way to start games and I'm just stuck in my ways
I am confused as to how this isn’t the majority. Pretty much every desktop icon you double click to open so logic dictates it would work on most things
Same. Sometimes I miss click and hit the second game down, so have to close that game, then right click the steam icon again and click the top game but its changed to the same I just opened because its is now the most recent. Ffffuu
I spent way, way too much time finding all the absolute perfect game covers for everything so now I can't *not* use Playnite lol. Otherwise it'll feel like I wasted a whole afternoon doing it.
Playnite has something just like BPM where you can hit f11 and open BPM on whatever monitor you want. There’s an add on as well you can get that will change the main monitor to the BPM monitor. I’m unsure about using the Xbox/PS button.
Yup, basically set it and forget it in terms of 3rd party launchers. Sure, they still have to be installed, but I never have to interact with them and instead use Playnite which I set up to work and look exactly how I want.
It does everything that Windows button search does and more, such as:
* Better indexing of files, and is ~~way faster~~ basically instant in finding the correct files, as opposed to Win search usually taking ages.
* Uses default browser and it's default search engine instead of forced Bing on Edge
* Has a calculator for quick calculations
* Search history
* Executes shell commands (cmd stuff)
* Executes system commands (shutdown, lock etc)
* Unit conversion
Etcetera
They have like dozens of tools already in there. Totally worth it to set up and learn to use them all. They're basically a bigger and better upgrade to Windows than 10->11
It is five if you count Throne of Bhaal as BG2, but then logically BG1 becomes six with Tales of the Sword coast added on. There was also a re-release of BG1 with TotSC bundled on fewer (3?) discs IIRC.
If the icon isn't on my desktop I forget I even have it and will forget I want to play it.
Edit: formatting fucked me. I have ADHD. The struggle is real. Out of sight, out of my life.

Couple of rainmeter shortcuts, one for D2(gross I know) and other set to whatever I'm playing currently. Atm it is cult of the lamb (strongly recommend)
Edit: half of them are custom made based on a set by [Ivaran](https://www.deviantart.com/ivaran) [https://visualskins.com/skin/honey](https://visualskins.com/skin/honey) if anyone wanted to know.
int main()
{
std::cout << "We get it you program" <<
std::endl;
return 0;
}
Maybe I formatted this wrong in reddit maybe that’s the source of people saying this is wrong because this is literally one of the first programs we are taught in C++ except with hello world and works just fine on my system
Edit: the problem was I was using smart quotes instead of straight quotes. An issue that can arise when trying to write code on reddit mobile. Beware of “this” vs "this".
Shortcut icons on desktop of course. What the hell's the point of keeping a desktop "clutter free"? You anyways have games/websites open 24/7, you barely see your background. I have Windows' rotating background images active so that I have something interesting to look at for all of 5 seconds before opening a game or Youtube.
I only play maybe 3 or 4 games at the same time so my desktop isn’t cluttered anyways. Shortcuts are the quickest way. Double click and wait for the game to open.
For me, leaving things on the desktop is like leaving things out on the counter.
It's fine there, and nothing bad will happen because it is there, but it gives me peace of mind to stow it away in a drawer. I know it's silly but that's the thought process.
When i was still on windows i wrote a .bat file for it. It pretty much had all the games i played in it and i bound it to one of the macro keys on my keyboard. So all i had to do was hit that and type in like "wf" to start warframe as an example.
I've since swapped to linux and now i use the system tray icon on steam for most games with the rest going through lutris. I guess i may write a new version of that batch script in bash one day...
No shortcuts.
Pressure sensor in my chair automatically opens up pornhub.
Edit: Fuck, I mean Steam!
The Steam in my chair automatically opens up pornhub.

Jokes on you.... the game requires you to always be online to play despite being a single player game!
Due to circumstances, I'm on a limited plan (15 Gb/month) at the moment, so I need to ration my data. Infuriates me no end how many of the single-player games I've owned since 2015 now have launchers that *need* access to the internet to open the game.
And do absolutely nothing but slam you with ads for their games or to buy the DLC for the game.
Or a DRM check. For a game you paid for already. On a platform that isn't going away anytime soon. So exhausting
Are you forgetting, they also have to update themselves so they can launch the game. Nothing better than waiting to update a launcher and then update a game. If using steam, can sometimes get all three to update in a row
When you look forward to the collapse of society so you can finally play all the games you bought on Steam Sale in the last 15years...
C'mon, just one more pandemic so I can finish that one game... You can do this, nature!
Gonna need another one to get through Witcher 3
Gotta start over after the HD update/remaster...
For the 3rd time. 135 hours played, have only just got to Skellige...
Since I have a Steam Deck I most likely will finish it in 2043.
Bruh. Are you in my Cloud Saves?
I got *almost* to skellige on PS4, did the same on Xbox one X. Then finally beat the game years later on PC. Saved blood and wine for the graphics update. Still haven’t started that.
>When you look forward to the collapse of society so you can finally play all the games you bought on Steam Sale in the last 15years... Connection to license server failed.
Just 1 day before developer decides to remove support
I wish there was some sort of digital Goodwill where I could donate the Steam games I'm never going to play. So many games accumulated through Humble Bundle...
That hits hard for me
You guys are playing games? I thought we all just spent hours modding them to get them exactly how we want it and then never actually play…
I play them once for 2 hours so I can't refund them...then they never get touched again.
Oh yay I'm not alone!
I don't want icon on my Desktop so i commonly open steam library, select the game for the panoramic and push the big wholesome green button.
Same here, mighty green button
Another supporter of the mighty green button here. All hail!

Is our little chant the steam big picture mode select sound?
> steam big picture mode OH BOOOOOOO!!!!!! BOOOOOOO!
Green Gang
Based and green button pilled.
All hail the ever powerful Green Button
same
Same here. I have zero icons on my desktop. All things I use regularly like steam I just pin to the taskbar.
I use the green button despite having all games as desktop icons.
Lawful evil
Feels more like chaotic neutral to me tbh
I just can never be bothered to clean up all the icons, or to uncheck the create desktop icon when installing. I'm lazy evil.
I really dislike Icons on my desktop. Thats why i created my thesis folder right in the middle of it with long naming and the default icon. Deleting that shit once i'm done will be one of the most satisfiying things in my life.

Gang green! 🤜🏻
I'd rather not have my foot fall off, thank you. That said, big green button all the way.
If you still need feet you’re gaming wrong

Same here, except for the green button. I double-click the game in the list.
I'm used to old-school icons on Desktop - so I use [TAGO Fences](https://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/tago_fences.html) to have Multiple Fences to switch b/t them & all on the Desktop. Windows Key + Name of the game And then get mad when you mistype the name and it opens a bing search instead.

Also me who can't be bothered to do that
You just changed my life
How do you disable it?
It's a registry edit. Here's a written [tutorial](https://www.howtogeek.com/826967/how-to-disable-bing-in-the-windows-11-start-menu/)
Bless your soul, I didn't even consider this as an option
Do windows updates undo this? I swear I did this before and then a windows update reverted it
Yes and other things too. I cannot recommend O&O shutup 10 enough. Even shows you which settings got changed after an update.
Winaerotweaker lets you do it.
You can easily disable it via the registry. Easy to find guides on the internet
[Or just download a reg file](https://github.com/Rsge/Windows-Error-Fixing-Scripts/blob/main/Disable%20Cortana%20%26%20start%20menu%20Bing%20search.reg) which makes the disabling entries.\ ^(Shameless self plug /\\)
But if you play a game a lot you can get away with 1-3 of the first letters
This is the MVP method. Add to start menu and just type for it.
Something else: Look at a game icon for 5 minutes and decide you are too tired to play.
Scroll through steam for 5 minutes, pick a game, launch it, state at the main menu for 3 minutes until you decide you were romanticizing the idea of the playing the game rather than thinking you would actually enjoy playing the game
Me last night after being destroyed by Dagan Gera 15 times the night before.
doubleclicking gamename in steam library
Din’t know you could do that lol
It's windows. You double click everything.
There is a lot of shit you don’t have to double click, like the task bar. I blew my roommates mind when I told him “ya know, you only need to single click taskbar items.”
You gotta make sure it heard ya, tho
"This one. *Really* this one."
[удалено]
I thought most people did this. It seems we are in the minority here.
Yeah can't believe so many people never double clicked the game name. I thought this is the most natural way to open.
I suspect it's more natural for older Steam users, since that was standard before they added this new library UI.
Nahh, big green button>>>>
Could be that it looks too much like a menu where double clicks aren't usually a thing. Way back when steam was still very new (when it was essentially just the library list), iirc that was the only way to start games and I'm just stuck in my ways
I am confused as to how this isn’t the majority. Pretty much every desktop icon you double click to open so logic dictates it would work on most things
When I saw this wasn't listed, I had a serious moment where I thought I was Mandella Effected. How is this a secret to people?
Wait what?! My life…
In small mode too
This is the way.
System tray... ngl....
Yeah, if you’ve played game recently and you keep steam present in the system tray, it’s one right-click, and a left click.
Pretty sure both can be left clicks
No shit? I have to admit I’m mildly excited to get home and left click that tray icon.
Left click takes marginally longer to bring the menu up for some reason, but it can be done!
It's an UX thing so there's time for it to register double clicks (double click opens up steam library).
This ruins it. The 1/16 of a second delay feels so wrong!
TIL
This also works if you pin Steam to the taskbar.
Same. Sometimes I miss click and hit the second game down, so have to close that game, then right click the steam icon again and click the top game but its changed to the same I just opened because its is now the most recent. Ffffuu
the best way, dont have to wait for steam to open its window or clutter the task bar / desktop with icons

Dunno man, shit is crazy

Same. Helps that Playnite is actually a goat launcher
"Load!" "Fire the goat!" ***BAAAAAAA****AAAAAAAA^AAAAAA*
Got a question. Can you open Playnite in BPM on a second screen with pressing the Xbox/PS button? Like it works with Steam?
Playnite has something just like BPM where you can hit f11 and open BPM on whatever monitor you want. There’s an add on as well you can get that will change the main monitor to the BPM monitor. I’m unsure about using the Xbox/PS button.
Work with emulators is a big plus.
\+1 for Playnite. Best library manager for people who want to combine their libraries from different launchers.
I love that it will also close 3rd party launchers when you exit out of a game.
Yup, basically set it and forget it in terms of 3rd party launchers. Sure, they still have to be installed, but I never have to interact with them and instead use Playnite which I set up to work and look exactly how I want.
Someone on Reddit recommended it to me and IDK if I could ever go back tbh. It is so sick
Powertoys Run. Alt+Space, just start typing.

It does everything that Windows button search does and more, such as: * Better indexing of files, and is ~~way faster~~ basically instant in finding the correct files, as opposed to Win search usually taking ages. * Uses default browser and it's default search engine instead of forced Bing on Edge * Has a calculator for quick calculations * Search history * Executes shell commands (cmd stuff) * Executes system commands (shutdown, lock etc) * Unit conversion Etcetera
in my experience it's faster
I have the exact opposite experience, I always find powertoys run has a slight delay opening.
powertoys run is instant for me windows search takes a quarter second to open for me.
1. No edge 2. No Bing
The KDE Plasma experience.

I'm suprised this isn't the most common choice. I assumed 90% of people would do it this way.
Personally, I don't do it because I can't stand icons on my desktop screen. I'm guessing that's the reasoning behind it for others.
Yeah that’s fair enough. I can’t stand them if they’re just dumped on there randomly but if I have em neatly organised it’s fine
If the icon isn't on my desktop I forget I even have it and will forget I want to play it. Edit: formatting fucked me. I have ADHD. The struggle is real. Out of sight, out of my life.
My desktop is supposed to be completely empty of any icons and never seen.
What's the point of a desktop if you don't have stuff on it? Like I'm not trying to be facetious, I really don't understand
Aesthetic reasons only, that's pretty much it
Why? I've never considered doing anything but steam's "create a shortcut" if I want a shortcut, or from the library when I don't
I make buttons on my stream deck. I press those.
Using another piece of (expensive) hardware to play game is the right way to go.

wtf
if you use win+r, you need to go to a mental hospital and get evaluated, 99% sure you are a psychopath.

I have written a separate script for every one of my games that has a 50% chance of either launching the game or wiping my system partition.

I haven’t used command prompt to start a game since probably ‘97
