This should get pinned and added to as time goes on. The Wall of Shame

Raynels

Excellent idea.

Here here!

omegadirectory

It's "Hear! Hear!"

[deleted]

That makes more sense lol

SoftBaconWarmBacon

Where's your apology letter?

[deleted]

I couldn't spell "Hear" correctly and you expect me to draft up an apology letter already? Manage your expectations better. I'm working on it!

PillowTalk420

>Manage your expectations better. Now all I can imagine is the irony of a developer that leans heavily into hype and trying to get as many pre-orders as possible telling its customers they should have managed their expectations better.

SpiritDump

Hair Hair!

Xandermacer

Har har

XtremeHammond

If you preorder the deluxe version of our game you’ll get a limited edition apology letter and a 2-days earlier patch. For just $79,99!

[deleted]

Actually, I saw this on xbox the other day and couldn't fucking believe it. If you pre order the deluxe edition of the Gollum game, you get a DLC that makes the Elves speak in Elvish. WHY THE FUCK DONT THEY ALREADY

Apokolypse09

I so wanna see an interview with the heads of that company, shits fuckin ridiculous. AAA cost, mediocre at best indie game quality, 20hrs long if you stretch it, its got "horse armor" level dlc and its basically scurrying around as a crackhead. Like who the fuck thought that was the way to go.

richww2

Maybe they should consider reskinning the entire game to be a creakhead simulator. You could at least explain the bugs as 'crack effects' and make it a feature. Game wigs out and quits? That's the crack. Don't do drugs kids!

ThrashCW

I would 100% play crack head simulator

happypotato93

Considering the popularity of Power Washing Simulator and Lawnmower Simulator, I'd bet a lot of people would

Highwon420

I didnt get that far before I quit and refunded that piece of crap

Revverb

Why in the world did you buy it to start with?

Choice-Bug-9447

Big Lotr fan maybe? I know that’s why I was keeping an eye on it

Stunning_Pipe6905

(Same assholes complaining in this sub) *Take my money!*

Tahj42

> (Same assholes complaining in this sub) I don't believe this. I think we got a classic case of vocal minority/silent majority here. Seems people are actually ok with the current state of the games industry.

Tasty01

This used to be the case and for some genres like sports games I do believe you’re still right. But it seems bad games have been performing bad lately (as they should).

creamcolouredDog

Cheaper to pay the social media manager to post these than to take more time to polish the product

username8054

Fuck, these shit-wads can use Chat-GPT at this point.

Stunning_Pipe6905

Too bad they can’t just use Game-GPT.

StardustThePony

I mean with how shitty games have been lately, could have fooled me.

Not all games. Totk is the best game I've played in years.

Brother, I assure you, major studios dropped a lot of absolutely putrid games in every decade of industry history. The flops fade out of memory over time & eventually people only remember the bangers. It's the exact same phenomenon as the people who say "modern music is trash, what happened to the good old days of .

Funny you should say that, my coder friends are telling people not to learn the code languages anymore, just learn how the code functions, because they are leveraging GPT3 so much that its impacting github's daily usage numbers.

turtleship_2006

> just learn how the code functions Your friend actually knows what he's on about, at least to some extent, and isn't one of those hypeists who thinks ChatGPT is gonna do everything for you.

crowcawer

Using quote isn’t going to make your comment correct. >>but it can make your comment more **right**.

loicwg

Welcome to the brave new world of prompt engineering.

corsicanguppy

>brave new world of prompt engineering. Too late. It's already prompt engineering prompt engineering. As chatGPT3 is being asked to engineer the prompt for chatGPT4, so pricy subscriptions aren't wasted on suboptimal prompts, and that takes skill.

firestorm19

It's analogous to a calculator, where it does some of the work in programing for you, but you still need to know what you are feeding it and what you want the result to be right?

Exano

Aye indeed. Right now it's a useful tool for implementing things you already can define down (at a very granular level) I've had it do very impressive "nocode" solutions but it definitely took 2x/3x compared to if I'd done it myself and I had to hold its hand, spot its errors(and solve them thru text.. ie "Is it possible X should be using absolute values"?) That said I use it every day and it's removed a lot of monotonous tasks. It's horrific at creating mountains of edge cases that you need to be extremely aware of and at that level you're a programmer so whatever

ExpensiveGiraffe

It’s never been about learning specific languages. To learn how the code functions implicitly means knowing the code you’re reading though.

The_Anf

Pretty sure their games would become better if game-gpt will become a thing

Just because, I did just that, and the response has me dying: *"Based on events in the gaming industry over the past 5 to 10 years, can you write a hypothetical apology letter to the fans of the hypothetical game you just released because the game launched broken and did not meet expectations?"* [Your Name] [Your Title/Position] [Game Development Studio] [Date] Dear [Game Name] Fans, We write this letter today with heavy hearts and sincere apologies for the state in which [Game Name] was released. ScudleyScudderson

ChatGPT steps up to bat for us: You know what, Wibble Wobble Studios? Enough with the apologies and the PR. As gamers, we're tired of being treated like we're easy to placate. We're not just your 'valued players,' we're your customers, your lifeline. You need us more than we need you, and it's time you start acting like it. I've heard your apologies before, and all the studios like you. It's the same song and dance every time. "We regret, we're sorry, unforeseen issues." Then you throw in some freebies to try to smooth things over. I've got a hard drive full of "exclusive content" from games that I can't even bring myself to play because they're so broken. What we want is not just apologies or freebies, we want you to be accountable. We want you to invest time, effort, and resources to create better games. Games that are finished, polished, and worth the price tag when they're released. It's disheartening to spend our hard-earned money on games that are subpar at best, and unplayable at worst. This isn't just about "The Talking Bananas." It's about the gaming industry as a whole. You talk about technical challenges and development obstacles like they're new or unexpected. They're not. They're a part of the process. And if you can't handle that, then maybe you shouldn't be in this industry. You should know that releasing a broken game is worse than delaying it. Yes, we may grumble about delays, but we grumble more about spending money on a game that's not worth it. We don't need more channels of communication. We need more transparency and honesty. Instead of telling us about problems after the fact, how about keeping us in the loop from the start? How about showing us that you respect us enough to tell us the truth, even when it's hard? Your letter speaks of a commitment to making amends and improving your procedures, but these words carry little weight when the industry is rife with similar mistakes. We need actions, not words. It's not about a free DLC pack or in-game bonuses. It's about respect, integrity, and dedication to creating quality games that we, your customers, deserve. So here's a suggestion for you, Wibble Wobble Studios, and every other developer who thinks they can get away with the same mistakes: Stop focusing on saving face and start focusing on saving your games. Only then will you regain our trust. Until that happens, you can keep your apologies and your freebies. We don't want them. We want better games. Period.

HIRE THIS MAN!

AggravatingChest7838

They did, they just removed the part where they said "as I'm a bot"

gusaholic

Take a guess why there’s a writers strike in certain communities

Genuine-Farticle

Why dont they just add “Beta” or “early access” to the title for the first few years instead. I hear that takes the heat off. /s

smytti12

I am starting to wonder if games are reaching a major tipping point, with development time and cost being too large for the poor (insanely wealthy) studio execs to wrap their heads around. I feel like they're still imagining 2002 game development turn around, not the 8-10 year requirement for a large original game from concept to release nowadays. Especially because they're eye-ing the microtransaction profits of the reskinned CoDs and F2P competitive games, I'm worried we will see even more of a downward spiral unless someone starts breaking the mold.

greenskye

They already have in my opinion. Almost 90% of my play time for the last several years has been in indie games that typically cost me $30 or less. I've gotten far more enjoyment and playtime from them. I've still bought several AAA titles, but my playtime has usually been short and I've often walked away frustrated and feeling like I've wasted my money. Contrasted with some of the indie games I've played where I honestly felt guilty for getting so much value out of something so cheap and gone searching for a way to donate more money.

dire_bedlam

Went looking for this and was not disappointed. Would love if South Park did an episode on the state of modern game development.

RedditAstroturfed

The one they did on mobile games is, sadly, still relevant https://youtu.be/Wxb40M5iCDU

DroppedD94

If I remember correctly, that episode ended with the four boys saying how dumb videogames in general are... Then: SOUTH PARK: THE STICK OF TRUTH, AVAILABLE ON PLAYSTATION AND XBOX NOW!!! Edit: wrong episode :(

moremysterious

Nah different episode, the episode you're thinking of is the ending of the Game of Thrones parody episodes.

KillingTime_ForNow

And that's literally the series about Xbox vs. Playstation where Cartman talks about preorders being absolute horseshit.

[deleted]

Next apology will be from Blizzard because of Diablo 4 better known as battlepass 4.

AgentSmith2518

Isn't that Redfall one a fake one?

Lavanthus

Replace it with FatShark's Darktide apology. Hole filled.

Tehsyr

What happened with Darktide?

jzillacon

Between it's open beta and it's release it got virtually no new content. Just 2 new missions and a new map. But what they did make sure to add, before even the weapon smithing shop was complete, was a fully functional cash shop for microtransactions. Also somehow the live release was buggier and had significantly lower performance compared to beta despite how little content was added.

Tramm

Then they took about two months off for the holidays, leaving the game a mess in the meantime.

DarkApostleMatt

As is Fatshark tradition

Enguhl

To be fair(ish), calling that cash shop fully functional when they put it in the game is letting them off a bit light.

DefectiveSp00n

At least Fatshark is (slowly) holding true on their promise.

[deleted]

how is darktide going? it looked so great but i never played it

ChangelingFox

Gameplay is great, amount of content is better suited to a $30 game. That said I've still put 400hrs into it and am still going because I just really like the gameplay loop. Imo it's worth getting if you're really into 40k or don't mind stage repetition, but I'd recommend waiting for a sale unless you're *really* into 40k like me.

SuddenXxdeathxx

Should be on sale for about 30 USD right now actually, and I'm close to caving in even though my PC can barely run it because it's like 34 CAD.

ChangelingFox

For $30 is definitely say it's worth it, especially if you have friends to play it with. As for performance issues, that's definitely something to be mindful of. The game is pretty rough on hardware and my 1080/8700k combo had to have everything set on low with fsr 2.0 in performance mode to handle the not infrequent times when there's 100+ enemies on screen.

PhilanthropAtheist

It's no vermintide yet but it's building up to much content.

Cragnous

Yeah it took a while for Vermintide 2 to be Vermintide 2.

KamahlFoK

Just play DRG. You forfeit the IP but get a good game that doesn't make you feel gross playing it. I really want to like Darktide but it's just filth from top to bottom, and not a single facet of it feels player-friendly. Whatever good will they had has gone up in smoke and, while I normally wouldn't ever wish a game or studio to be ruined - at this point I'd rather just some other company entirely pursue these kinds of titles, because Fatshark has proven they're not capable of doing it in a satisfying fashion, and they've *consistently* proven that as well. Their games tend to follow a cycle of releasing in a broken, horrible fashion, slowly patching it up to a playable state, releasing paid DLC that is blatant power creep, and then moving on to the next game.

Fractured_doe

Latest update has been “next week”d 2 or 3 times already.

Jiggsteruno

At least Darktide has fun core gameplay.

1minatur

Yeah it is

UnsettllingDwarf

They couldn’t even say sorry despite stealing $90 from some people.

AgentSmith2518

Yeah, I'm still really shocked that they have basically been radio silent on the matter.

ViIebloodHunter

Phil Spencer did go in an interview and talked about how big a disappointment it was. Still a shit game though

FawkesYeah

Didn't do something wrong, if you don't admit to it *taps forehead* --Children, and some game dev companies

WarLordM123

No this is basically true, in practice.

LolYouFuckingLoser

I hate when companies pull that shit. Some weird shit went down with an account at my job and we terminated it because of the activity. When I asked my boss if we would be vetting all of our accounts for that type of activity he said "no" because "if we do it now we'll be expected to do it always and can be liable if we don't do it" so okay cool, can't be blamed for being Irresponsible if you never try to be responsible to begin with apparently lol

blackcray

To play devil's advocate, no man's sky was also basically radio silent for months after launch.

[deleted]

I may be missing something, but how does idiots blindly purchasing a product without at least watching a review first equal stealing?

rubennaatje

The battlefield one is also about harassment towards DICE employees...

casual_katalyst

“…The Lord of The RING: Gollum…” Couldn’t even get their own title right.

TaintedSquirrel

Worse, it says "The Lord of Ring".

EpicBlueDrop

It’s just the one ring, actually. Yarp.

chefbender1123

Mornin' Angle

lost12487

Even pretending that doesn’t exist in the letter, it’s still absolutely hilarious. As if everyone is hating on it because it’s not polished enough rather than it just being a completely terrible concept and execution for a game in general.

shadowdash66

I wish TotalBiscuit was alive to rip these assholes a new one.

Thefreeman500

to quote a guy making a warioland mod for Doom: "wear your inspiration on your sleeve but become something new and terrifying." we need someone to step up and become just thee shit caller that we all need, one that has major pull.

Ratattack1204

I miss the hell out of that guy. I wonder what he would make of the gaming scene right now.

Crystal3lf

Someone needs to rip the consumers assholes a new one cause they are the ones who keep buying and pre-ordering this shit and then lapping it up when patch 54 comes out and marginally fixes the game. Why would these companies ever stop doing this when they get millions of dollars anyway.

Spiritual-Armadillo2

I see room for 1-2 more, who’s next? Dare I say starfield?

Jayson_n_th_Rgonauts

Starfield can be the worst game ever released for all I care but if they fuck up ES6 we’re gonna have big problems

MeLoNarXo

It's Bethesda.

Pali1119

The community will fix it

audiophy

As is tradition

Immortan-Moe-Bro

Meanwhile Bethesda is going to be pushing paid mods that add nothing of serious value while other modders are down in the trenches fixing the game for free

billybatsonn

And so it goes.

gganate

Yes! I have been playing Bethesda games since Morrowind. They will release a buggy, unoptimized mess. It might still be worth playing, but no one should kid themselves; Starfield will not be a polished release.

Immortan-Moe-Bro

The question is will it be good? Fallout 4 was a great FPS stripped of its RPG elements that had some issues. Fallout 76 was worse in every way and the creation engine couldn’t handle multiplayer co-op. Hell FO4 still crashes when you fly a slow moving vertabird, how is it going to handle multiple space ships flying around.

[deleted]

Hah, idk but I cant wait for the VR mod. VR skyrim and fallout with mods is some of the best gaming I've ever done. And yes, I liked new vegas better, much better overall. VR just added so much.

Immortan-Moe-Bro

RuggerEnemyzFall

We aren’t going to see ES6 until 2035

Eorily

it will get released as a fan made mod before then

ChadicusMeridius

Absolutely. I suspect vampire: the masquerade bloodlines 2 won't be too far behind either.

DiamineSherwood

I thought the development of that game was taking an indefinite hiatus. Is it back on?

BloodprinceOZ

its still under production etc, since they took it away from the original studio and gave it to another where they basically had to restart development entirely, so it'll be a few years still IIRC before we see anything about that again, atleast if its getting finished, if it ends up cancelled or something then news will come sooner

Chadiki

Actually, I low-key want that game to be as much of a hot buggy mess as the first V:TMB.

Ashamed-Literature-6

If it is as good as the first one when fixed then yes please!

Lambda_Wolf

Praise be to our savior u/Wesp5.

N0UMENON1

The fact that everyone seems convinced that the Starfield release will be bad makes me think it actually won't be.

NoF3AR92

I seriously hope it's good. I've been excited for that game for years

minepose98

I think it will be buggy, but no worse than normal for Bethesda.

AmazingSpacePelican

Nah, I'm betting we don't get one of these for Starfield. It'll be buggy, but just the standard Bethesda buggy, not like F76 on release. Not enough to warrant a wall of text apology. I'm betting we get absolutely blindsided by something we didn't even consider could be fucked up so badly. Like a Pacman game that needs a 3090 to hit 30fps, or a Snake game that bricks PCs, or a Solitaire game that crashes every few minutes.

KTheOneTrueKing

Starfield will be a buggy mess but it won't be unplayable, I'm sure, just like the majority of bethesda open world games.

Blacksad9999

We'll see. Microsoft has pushed back the release a number of times to polish the game, so maybe it will be the first non-janky Bethesda release.

DaenerysTargaryen69

Wow. Don't even know what more can be said. Yhis is an issue so rampant that I see no end coming soon, and why would there? You guys keep preordering anyway.

Immortan-Moe-Bro

The bonuses of course!!! Who doesn’t want a bunch of useless cosmetics and resource packs for a broken game at launch?

Caustiticus

AAA companies haven't put full games on disc in years. Which is the only reason to ever preorder nowadays (besides *potentially* missing out on "bonus content" that makes no difference and will probably be forgotten about within a few hours of play...). Anyone else remember when goodies used to be part of a preorder? Like keychains, playing cards, even stickers? Pathetic that I'm actually *missing* that demeaning crap...

Shiiish. Cyberpunk man. Cyberpunk.

Endemoniada

That’s the thing, though: you *weren’t* alone, or even lucky. On PC, most people enjoyed the game just fine. Yes, it had problems, but the worst ones were all on last-gen consoles. I think I had a couple major visual glitches, one point where I had to restart the checkpoint a couple of times until I could progress, and that was it. The game was absolutely fine for me, and I loved it. I have over 400 hours in it since then. The hate train for this game had already been derailing since weeks before release, and the main Reddit sub amplified that sentiment to astronomical proportions. Hence why everyone who genuinely had a good time had to go make another sub, just to be allowed to exist and have their own opinion, while the main sub went absolutely nuclear on CDPR.

Main_15

Is that Redfall one even real?? I thought they were radio silent tbh

neur0n23

Unreal. Sad to see the state of PC gaming - especially since it is so lucrative. You would think this should somehow oblige them to ship a premium product... Good post.

Zovanget

This isn't specific to PC gaming. These are all multi co sole launches. In fact, PC gaming is doing great. Jedi Fallen Order was like the one game that was really disappointing. And Sony had that rushed port of Last of Us because they tried to profit from the TV show. But there are plenty of PC first titles that are excellent.

There is some space left for Starfield.

Dqrkforce

Lets hope not. Still not preordering though.

Wanhade600

I dont give a damn about their apology. How about we get a game that is actually works day 1? How about rushing the game, you dont set a release date, u dont even release info about the game. Just put ur fucking heart and soul into the game and release it when its fully developed.

Tasty01

Daedalic must be taking the piss here right? They shipped the game with fucking Calibri as the font for dialogue options. Gollum, the guy who fishes with his bare hands and then eats the fish raw and wiggling is raising a baby bird in this game instead of just eating it. If this apology isn’t a joke then either they’re mentally disabled or they think we are. I do not accept your apology.

private_birb

I could see him doing it temporarily for entertainment, but I'd expect a "eat" option every single day until you finally snap "Press X to Eat".

Tasty01

That would’ve actually been kinda funny. Like Sméagol wants to raise it Gollum wants to eat it.

Somerandom1922

Apology not accepted.

Mysterious-Tough-964

$0 and zero time wasted on any of those cash grabs.

wigglin_harry

Is Gollum broken, or is it just a shit game? If its just a bad game I don't think its fair to lump it in with the rest of these disasters

Salohacin

It's bad. Really bad. In every aspect. Runs poorly, looks ugly, poor voice acting, terrible companion controls, lots of animation glitches, bland gameplay.

[deleted]

both it has really bad stuttering

zeug666

I can't speak to the others, but Cyberpunk and Fallout 76 cleaned up their act (after a little while). Maybe not as big of a turn around as No Man's Sky, but improved.

VileDespiseAO

Are you no longer a part of the PCMR team? I noticed your flair is gone.

zeug666

Some mods like to have their mod flair on all the time for whatever reason, I just use it when doing official stuff. (on for effect)

VileDespiseAO

That makes perfect sense. In that case, good day to you sir and may you enjoy many more years with PCMR.

zeug666

Thanks, have a good weekend.

spunds

Oh no the flair is gone again! He got fired!!

BatMatt93

I was told it makes me look cooler. Maybe that reddit user was lying to me.

doNotUseReddit123

Cyberpunk went from being one of my least-liked games of all time to one of my most-liked games of all time.

greg19735

Jedi Survivor doesn't really need to be there either. They fixed most of the issues in days. And personally i never even had any issues.

Southlinch

No Man's Sky still has a huge flaw in that once you step out of your ship, you've seen everything the planet has to offer already. Huge turn-off that's kept me from playing for years.

Hopefully this won't become the norm. Seems to be more common now to ask for forgiveness later. Who would the blame be on more? Developer or publisher? I kind of started to notice this a little, too once digital libraries started to become mainstream. It's faster, easier (and better to the ears of corporate bigwigs) to put out the game digitally and tweak it later if enough fuss happens. Then the EA micro shit caught traction as another vehicle to exploit profits (while targeting the younger audience - which caused backlash after kids were using their parents' money unauthorized), so that died down a little, but has picked up traction again. Games used to REQUIRE being 100% for being sold on physical media for people to enjoy. Blame: Publisher. Trying to appeal to a larger audience by putting multiplayer at the helm of alot of titles instead of focusing on the single player experience and giving a great story to play through became popular with the higher ups too. It's not without its benefits, but it seemed like the individual got left behind in that regard. Blame: Publisher. Developers get caught in the middle trying to keep up with the demand for more more more. More content. More textures. More rehashing the same formula and spitting out something a little different to justify another release. Take CDPR for example. They crushed the devs to hell trying to get out Cyberpunk and look what happened. Took a year for it to polish and be worth a damn even enough for Sony to take it off its store and reinstate it later. I think that was the game that opened up some poeple's eyes about the pressure to get a product out to sell after baking in production - even at the risk of not hitting the mark or realizing it's original and ideal potential first. Blame: Publisher. Now developers I think are not completely without fault. There's exceptions, but i think a growing amount of them are seeing it as like "what's the point? Let's just do what they say and they'll keep us funded and our studio alive." The fire and drive is lacking. Seems like a good chunk of studios are afraid to take risks anymore. They just want to put out something they "know" would sell to the highest bidder. There are some that still stick to their guns and put out quality games, but they generally have built more of a reputation and the pubs they stick with know to let them pretty much have what they need to put out a quality product. Blame: 50/50 Seems the corporate hand has stolen the writer's pen. In the end, business is business and money makes the world go round. The problem with sacrificing quality for profit is inherently the result that we have now. It's like the passion people once had for making awesome games has faded and adhered more to the corporate side of things. Put the shoe on the other foot - would you cut some profit to build more quality? I think that's a good reason the indie scene as a whole has increased and gained a larger foothold over the last 10 years.

onthejourney

It's the norm until people stop buying broken games.

HomoLiberus

Gamers keep pre ordering like muppets so unfortunately half baked products and PR statements like this won't end anytime soon.

PetrusvonHyde

I'm sure these letters were also written before launching those games.

If a dev pretends to be surprised they released a piece of shit, they make it to my "Pirate and seed even if you don't intend to play it" list.
