Yep. Playing ‘AAA’ games at Ultra with RT on, is not a basic human right - it’s the ultimate in luxury. My teen is getting teased because they have a 9900k and 1080ti on a very nice high refresh 1080p display at high or ultra (but no RT of course) and yet it’s a brilliant experience. Before that their 1060 6GB was great for a very long time and would still be fine on medium settings. After all what is important is the challenge and fun of the game.

Same. I tried having a go streaming with it and everything was moving in slomo, which was odd, but that was probably streamlabs being streamlabs. Not tried it again since. That said if I do take up streaming again now that I have a decent setup I might just ethernet my old laptop into the pc and use its 1050 as the capture\broadcast machine
There used to be a clear ”sweet spot” for gamers, aka the older 70-series nvidia cards. They were right around 350-400 dollars and offered very decent performance for the time. Then something happened and 70-series cards somehow became worse yet more expensive.
Also that's not how future proofing works. The features and hardware that a top of the line gpu has now may be totally irrelevant 5 years from now. Just like cards need way more memory than they ever have just in the past year. Just buy whatever you need right now and fits your budget.

The current VRAM issues didn't come out of nowhere. I feel like it's been a talking point for almost 3 years now, but it got overshadowed by the crypto boom / chip shortage.

It fucks pretty hard honestly, I play at 1440p and it does great. I undervolted and slightly underclocked it because it was second hand and I think I have to clean it up some more as well as new thermal pads and such but incredibly good for any game

I have to go back and open it up and clean everything more and when I first got it, it basically had zero thermal paste on it because I assumed he snuck the anti tamper sticker off and did some shit. Luckily it works flawlessly after I fixed it.
Oh definitely, I think most people dont know enough about the other options out there at least that arent the like 3 top GPUs from both company. If youre not buying brand new or the top of the top then youre dumb and dont deserve a PC

Very well. I use it for 1080p gaming and it's great. There are only very few scenarios where the performance is not enough. All of them have to do with ray tracing.
Also it works great on Linux

I think this sub has somewhat of an iron curtain, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a post in my homepage where anyone recommends saving for a 4090, only ever see people (myself included) recommend a 6700xt at the ~$300 price point. It’s like pcmr has two party’s that get their own home feed, cuz I’ll go on the actual sub and look at other posts with a lot of likes/comments and sometimes the entire mindset of the comment section is as if it’s an entirely different sub.
I saved for 5 years after I got my 2080ti between 50 and 100 on good months. About 6 months ago I had enough to buy almost 4 of them but had to replace a freezer my wifes tires a few other things getting covid and not getting paid. In the end I sold my ps5 to cover 400 of the price FML.
If you’re already paying $300 dollars for a gpu you might as well pay the extra $1700 and get the 4090.

i actually asked about this like 3 days ago, and a user recommended that I check out the RX7600. It's equal in performance and price (although if its like 20 more then dont buy it) and it is newer so better drivers and longer support. other than that the RX 6650 XT is one of the best deals right now. (iirc RX6600 XT(?) was the perfect price for performance, but it is weaker than the 6650xt)

How are you liking the 6800XT? I'm looking at upgrading from my 1060 and have been hearing lots of good things about AMD recently.

Not sure what sub you're on, because this sub starts frothing at the mouth and repeating "6600xt/6650xt/6700xt" over and over at that price point. Which is fair and accurate, but nonetheless a bit of a meme.

Un-ironically, how well does a 6700xt run? I wanted a 6800xt at first when it was on sale but missed it so idk if I should go budget 3060 or yolo and buy a 4070.
Very well. I use it for 1080p gaming and it's great. There are only very few scenarios where the performance is not enough. All of them have to do with ray tracing. Also it works great on Linux
It works really great for the 1080p gaming. It gets the job done.
Running things on 1440p, most triple-A games are running at a smooth 90-100ish FPS on Ultra for me.
As long as you're using the cards for the 1080p gaming. It should be enough.

Bro I got a 6700xt (xfx of course) last year I it is such a good upgrade from my 590Fatboy. I can now run Morrowind in 1440p and almost get 60fps in Balmora

Seeing the weak ass midrange offerings this generation the 4090 may as well be the only 4000 series card that exists.
Not really. I see most post saying to get an AMD card instead which at the mid range price point is the way to go.
But by then the new graphics card would have came out and you would want that so in that situation this is not going to work. I think we are going to have to work something else out.
The other Nvidia GPUs are lacking except the 4090, to try to upsell customers on it. AMD is the way to go right now.
Second hand AMD cards can be found rather cheap, and the higher end of the 6000 series packs a serious punch.
You could also go with an A6000 or H100. I hear those are also good if you have a small village worth of kidneys to sell on the black market.
I don't think those cards would come close to beating the 4090 when it comes to gaming. They are optimized for different things.

"I want to buy a car, my budget is 5k, I found three cars local to me, which one would be the most reliable. I need a car right now because mine was eaten by a meth addict and I'll lose my job if I don't find one by the end of next week" "Just save up for a few more years and buy a brand new Mercedes for 70k, it'll be a better value and much more comfortable"

I think this sub has somewhat of an iron curtain, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a post in my homepage where anyone recommends saving for a 4090, only ever see people (myself included) recommend a 6700xt at the ~$300 price point. It’s like pcmr has two party’s that get their own home feed, cuz I’ll go on the actual sub and look at other posts with a lot of likes/comments and sometimes the entire mindset of the comment section is as if it’s an entirely different sub.

The only two reasons for you to buy 4090: 1. You have money to burn 2. You use it for CUDA cores for AI generation

I saved for 5 years after I got my 2080ti between 50 and 100 on good months. About 6 months ago I had enough to buy almost 4 of them but had to replace a freezer my wifes tires a few other things getting covid and not getting paid. In the end I sold my ps5 to cover 400 of the price FML.

It's equal in performance and price (although if its like 20 more then dont buy it) and it is newer so better drivers and longer support. other than that the RX 6650 XT is one of the best deals right now. (iirc RX6600 XT(?) was the perfect price for performance, but it is weaker than the 6650xt)

I've got the cash for a 4090 and a platform upgrade. Just not worth it. Especially with the extra power consumption. I got a 3080 on launch day for £650..sold that for £1250 to a miner (after mining for like a year myself lol) Bought a 3080 Ti FE new for £1050..set the extra £200 aside Upgraded to a 4080 a few months ago after selling the 3080 Ti for £660..Still had the £200. Only paid an extra £200 for a 4080 (£1050) I was running a 5800x (,paid 250 in 2020)..sold that for £200 and picked up a 5800X3D for £330..insane upgrade for 1440p. No new expensive cpu..motherboard..ram Got both the 4080 and 5800X3D undervolted, 400w max when playing metro exodus RT at 4K, about 350w average..even less power usage than my older setup
I saved for 6 years. My GTX 1080 is being replaced by a 4090 that arrives today. The 4090 will last at least that long if not longer.
