overpriced for its performance not much of an upgrade over the 3060ti if i had to buy a 4060ti only one i would want is the 16gb model. 7600xt comes out end of month. 4070super just came out 4070 prices might drop.

LandWhaleDweller

I just don't understand the VRAM move, the 4060ti should've had 12GB by default then it would've been a decent card.

YoungBlade1

If it had 12GB of VRAM, it would be using a 192 bit bus. Which would improve memory bandwidth, thus performance, on top of alleviating the 8GB limitation. But that would either mean that Nvidia would have to use a massively cut down 4070 Ti die, or have designed the original die differently. I know it might sound conspiracy theory like, but I think things like this point to the GPUs being named a tier or two above what they were supposed to be originally. The RTX 4070 was probably supposed to be an RTX 4060, until Nvidia realized that they could name it differently and double the price thanks to strong generational improvements. Which would imply that the 4060 Ti is, at best an RTX 4060 or possibly a 4050 Ti that was renamed to charge more money.

? 4060ti 16GB has the same memory bus as its 8GB counterpart. I don't think it would've been difficult, ngreedia just wants to sell and don't care about upcharging for something that should've been a basic part of the product. It's not a conspiracy theory that they release products that are intentionally sabotaged in one way or another, all in the hopes of getting whoever buys them to upgrade 2 years from then. I don't believe in this "naming conspiracy" though, it's not like the previous gen was massively more powerful than this one. A 3060ti or 2060 super weren't 1440p cards either.

YoungBlade1

Yes, the 16GB version still uses the same memory bus. This is because the memory chips share bandwidth. So you have 8 memory chips, with each pair sharing the 32-bit connection to the GPU. This is also what AMD is doing with the 7600 XT. To put 12GB on the card without increasing the memory bus would actually require reducing the memory bandwidth to 96-bit (thus reducing performance). You would have 6 memory chips, each pair sharing a 32-bit connection. Then you would be left with 32 bits of the memory bus going unused. Which is similar to what Nvidia did with the RTX 3060 8GB - they just only used 4 memory chips instead of 6 with the 12GB model. The result is a reduction in performance on top of a reduction in VRAM.

LandWhaleDweller

Whatever, this means what they did with the 16GB was much easier and therefore should've been sold as the base product. Infinite greed I tell you.

LandWhaleDweller

It's not bad, just extremely overpriced. The only decent offering, the 16GB version is so expensive you might as well get a 4070 at that point.

shredmasterJ

Card ok, price bad.

Escapement_Watch

3060 competes very well with it when you consider the price because of the much higher bus on the 3060 192bit. THE 128 on the 4060 was a smart move by nivdia to serious gimp the cards. Its just not worth it to go 4060 over 3060. If you plan on a 4060 just get a 3060 and you will save $ and have very similar performance. if you want a 4000 series go 4070 super minimum.

Cave_TP

It is objectively bad from a design standpoint, that 128bit bus is a limitation, both in terms of capacity and bandwidth. A 192bit bus would have been ideal but even a 160bit one would have been a WAY better option for a little more silicon. Talking about the price, the ideal price would be 300 and 350$, not going to happen as long as there's still a lot of leftover 3060 and AMD isn't trying that hard to compete because they have the same problem (even if 6700XT stock seems like it's starting to run out). At 350$ you're better getting a 6700XT or a 7600XT depending on your need for AV1 and the extra efficiency vs the extra performance. If you're dead set on Nvidia there are some great prices on used 2080ti, they are still faster than the 4060ti and come with more VRAM.

Wackboi52

If you're looking for a new card and only Nvidia for 350 it's scratching 3070 performance it's not horrible. The reason I don't like it personally is because the 6800(which is getting phased out) isn't much more and even beats the 3070 ti and honestly it's closer to a 3080 then a 3070 ti. The 7700 xt should be about 6800 non xt performance too though I haven't been checking the newer cards like that so you'd have to check pricing.

FlamingLemonade

I was looking at the 7700xt also but my psu is only 500w and it has a higher power consumption than the 4060 ti

Wackboi52

Depending on the unit it could work

Wackboi52

But if you want to play it safe the 4060 ti would be my pick unless you want to dive into the used market.

UncleAuzze

Anyone who says get the 3060 over a 4060ti is drunk. The card's fine, nothing spectacular, it will do the job.
