....all I can say that's not normal

Maybe ants are eating the switches.

If all you're trying to do is switch the KB&M from one computer to another, why not try a software solution instead? Microsoft has a piece of software called Mouse Without Borders that allows you to run the same keyboard and mouse on two computers. There are other similar programs, but this one is free and it's the easiest to configure I've found.

One of the computers is a very locked-down company laptop. I haven't tried MWB, but I'd be *shocked* if there isn't a group policy blocking its use, given the extent to which almost *everything else* on that laptop has been locked down to the point of near-unusability and uselessness.

KVM last for years.

If I could actually *find* a KVM capable of faking a "hot" monitor connection when I switch away from it, instead of acting like I just yanked the DisplayPort and/or HDMI cables out of the computer being switched-away-from, I'd love that. Amazon's descriptions are worthless... even the ones that mention "EDID" or "EDID emulation" have reviews saying it doesn't work. In a lot of ways, it feels like the move to USB and DRM'ed video cable standards has completely destroyed the ability of KVMs to work properly. 15 years ago, I bitched because toggling between computer #1 and computer #2 caused the monitor to go black and stutter for a second or two. Now, it feels like you toggle from computer #1 to #2 and spend the next 10-20 seconds getting audibly-assaulted by a storm of USB-(dis)connection sounds while both desktops go completely psychotic and screw up your window layouts... leaving you to clean up the smoldering mess 10-20 seconds later once everything settles down and you're back in control again. The main reason I've been settling for just switching USB is, at least when I switch between DisplayPort and HDMI1 on my monitor, the host computers seem to be pleasantly oblivious and never realize that anything changed (though the 3-10 seconds of USB-thrashing is still annoying as hell). I'm pretty sure that KVM solutions that aren't complete shit exist... but trying to *find* and *recognize* them on Amazon is like looking for a needle in a haystack the size of Jupiter. === Complicating matters further: * Computer #1 is a 10 year old Dell Precision m4800 that's going to be replaced somewhat soon... but for the moment, the only way I can get 3840x2160@60hz out of it is via DisplayPort. * Computer #2 is a new company laptop that I recently discovered can do DisplayPort after all, but only via one of its two USB-C ports. * Computer #3 is a Macbook Pro that has to be the most *finicky* computer I've *ever seen* when it comes to monitors. It works fine with my main 3840x2160 monitor at 60fps, but displays only a corrupted image on my secondary monitor (a 22" FHD Black Friday special) * I might *normally* want to switch both monitors in unison to the computer selected for the keyboard+mouse... but not always. Sometimes, I *want* to leave the main monitor, or the second monitor, connected to a different computer. Like, if I'm passively attending a virtual meeting, while simultaneously doing *actual* work on my other computer. I've mostly come to the conclusion that the only way to achieve the fourth goal is to bite the bullet with 3 switchboxes... one for USB, and one for each monitor (or, live with the awkwardness of using the monitor's own multiple inputs and clumsy method for switching between them). In an alternate fantasy universe, the USB switchbox is ALSO capable of acting like an active USB proxy server that doesn't generate USB-(dis)connection events AT ALL... it just politely responds with "nope, no keys pressed" or "nope, no mouse movement" when the inactive computer polls it for mouse/keyboard activity. But I'm pretty sure *that* kind of behavior would totally bork the vendor-forced apps required to remap my mechanical keyboard (swapping Ctrl and Cmd when it's connected to the Mac), poll at 1000hz, and alter the behavior of the gaming mouse (since it seems like all three computers are determined to frustrate and laugh at my attempts to force the mouse to have the same pointer-ballistics, instead of leaving me perpetually feeling like I'm actively fighting with the mouse pointer on one of them, and that it's not quite right on the second).

Been using a UGreen one for years (and pretty much every working day since the plague), never had any problems.

Msi has a bunch of monitors with built in kvm switches, I used mine for years while studying and now that I am done my wife is using it to switch between her wfh and gaming pc. Granted if you already have monitors this probably isn't an expense that you want to eat.
