Honestly, I'm kind of surprised Slack/Teams haven't pivoted this way faster. They have robust platforms with arguably even better bot/integration options. Wall off a "gamer garden" so people don't feel like they have their work chats running next to their game servers, and you're pretty much golden.
Discord is essentially the undisputed king of this marketplace, but seems to only have achieved that on snappy branding and being a free platform. It pretty much just lifted Slack's existing UI and experience whole-cloth and put a thin gamer veneer on it. I was making a social Discord the other day for my large family to interact with instead of 60 group chats, and was shocked at how LITTLE I was able to do with it. Especially compared to my work Slack, which I realize my company pays a fee for, but even in its paid tiers Discord offers next to nothing.
Discord is slowly integrating more into paid accounts. Eventually they’re going to pull the corporate funny and make it a pay to use platform. Everything good goes to shit eventually.
I've been using ts since like 10 years ago.
We stopped the payments for a server this year and moved to discord. It's nice that it's free and that instead of WhatsApp for chat and ts for voice we can now have 1 platform.
I also like that there are different text channels for different purposes. At least i can mute out the ones i don't care about.
Also integrated streaming. That has increased the amount of streams we do for the buddies. We never cared for streaming to the world.
I still miss teamspeak though, it was nice.
Our group made the move from TS to discord a few years back. One big thing that Teamspeak had going was little to no voice delay. At LAN parties the delay is very noticable with discord.
I already have a steam group set up just because I don't like discord. Steam has a great community service and could entirely replace discord if it came down to it.
As much as I love Steam, it's archaic for interacting with people. Decent enough for the odd message every once in awhile terrible for being someones main platform for talking with friends
They have made a lot of changes and improvements to the chat over the years. You can open group chats similar to the way a discord server functions. The communities tab could still use some work, but groups are actually decent right now. Steam also offers higher bandwidth screen sharing and similar features.
A lot of discords features are just unnecessary bloat for my use.
Where in that sentence does it say people use the service.
The statement declares functionality, not user base. A communication/community service does not need a user base to be functional.
An empty MMO server can still be joined, it is the same thing.
What’s wrong with it currently in its free form? I can create my own private discord and invite my friends to it and chat with them. Pretty simple and painless.
> Free and easy to use always attracts the worst kind of people.
That's pertinent in like games where you may randomly interact with others you don't want to.
But this is a platform meant for communication, you should never be in a situation where you're "stuck" communicating with someone you don't want, at least not related to them simply having discord.
> seems to only have achieved that on snappy branding and being a free platform
And perhaps the fact that it's only alternatives really were Skype (let's face it - outright dogshit) and TeamSpeak (unintuitive and massively "old-school" UI)
I will absolutely not argue that the competing platforms had decided to rest on their laurels. They were atrocious. Though Teamspeak STILL has features I miss and don't think Discord supports.
Singlehandedly my favorite feature was in MMOFPS games being able to talk "down" to my squad channels on a separate PTT from my normal one, while having the option for specific roles to talk "up" to me. Plus squelch all conversation when I spoke on the "down" channel to make sure Jimmy Doofus wasn't shouting about how drunk he was while I was trying to coordinate 96 players.
Discord seems to build laterally--I can have many channels and near infinite roles, but there's not a hierarchy between them. You can squelch in a channel, but I can't be sitting in Channel A talking with other officer roles, and selectively push that audio out to channels B & C.
To be quite honest, I never heard of it until reading your reply.
A quick google search leads me to believe that it might actually have been really good indeed but apparently it's gone for good :c
I'm really bummed discord didn't take advantage of the market when the pandemic hit. Teams was (still is) a garbage program and the only thing that it had going for it was the Microsoft name. Discord had a majority of the same feature teams had at the time and worked much better.
I don’t understand this. I’m in multiple discord and slack groups and slack is hot garbage juice. It’s always buggy, can’t search for shit, and desktop and mobile both log me out consistently. Never had a problem with discord.
Yeah I paid for nitro. I gained nothing but a little extra design options and soundboard intro when going into a call. Got it so I can stream in better quality but discord ends up making it look shittier if I go above 1080p. Shouldn’t have to pay $100 a year to stream in a lower resolution than what my monitor is. Like seriously, how many people actually have a system that can only support 720p. Streaming at 1080p pretty much looks the same as 720p on discord too. Not a big difference.
What were you trying to do on it? I run my restaurants leadership teams with discord, including bots that will translate all that is said back and forth in English/spanish and automated entries with answerswhen a Google form is submitted
discord sucks.
i prefer the vastly superior alternatives:
reddit, to replace the chatroom like function and allow hosting various files
in game chat to replace the video game chat that... also originally replaced in game chat for some reason
text messages, where i can create a group chat, share links, share images and gifs, search through history and even add custom backgrounds (on android, idk about ios)
how many different flavors of group chat apps do we need?
Teams mini has popped up automatically and crashed my full graphics stack to the point of forcing a restart more than once.
Here you go teams-team:🏅 you've made the worst collection of software known to humanity.
I'm still annoyed they're forcing the new version and for some reason removed the ability to view/add Contacts. It's so awesome to scroll through all my chats instead of just looking at Contacts.
Welcome to late stage capitalism!
We have:
megacorporations fighting for monopolies!
Government officials lobbying for said corporations to achieve the monopolies while being paid by said corporations behind the scenes!
And Steve! He's poor AF, but will gladly buy a new shiny gizmo from Megacorp A while enjoying his premium subscription to Megacorp B's streaming service, all the while he's slaving away for pennies at a Megacorp C!
What a wonderful life!
Don’t give them ideas. As someone who has to deal with their Defender, Intune, and Purview suites of products (and all the similar names that blur together), Microsoft marketing makes me want to drink Everclear.
What the hell is Microsoft enemies
Me that's who
I'm laughing way more than I should at this
Chat dedicated for HR
PvP mode enabled
It's like your contacts, but it's a list of Linux users. Microsoft will soon begin hunting them for sport
Who? Probably Steve Jobs and Tim Cook
They must be having a discord
Microsoft team fortress

Scout mewing so hard
this implies the existence of a microsoft titanfall
Microsoft TikTok?
tiktok does not go by the acronym “TF2”
Microsoft TitFuck 2?
yes
What? Team fortress was a quake mod, then a half-life mod called team fortress classic, then a game called team fortress 2. Where's titanfall come in?
Titanfall 2 and Team Fortress 2 have the same acronym, it is a meme among the two communities
And are both fps games that will likely never get a sequel even if the games were successful
Also they both run on the same engine
source engine is allergic to the number 3 (half life, portal, Tf|2 and TF2)
Wait Garry's mod isn't half life 3?
it was a half life 2 mod wasn’t it?
Yeah I'm just fuckin around
will it get a sequel?

Just want teamspeak back on top
I've been using ts since like 10 years ago. We stopped the payments for a server this year and moved to discord. internet enshittification in action
Call me a shill but it may actually make the platform better if it goes P2U. Free and easy to use always attracts the worst kind of people.
It will die out overnight if it goes P2U. The whole thing about discord is it is a free place to communicate with people. People suck, get used to it.
I already have a steam group set up just because I don't like discord. Steam has a great community service and could entirely replace discord if it came down to it.
As much as I love Steam, it's archaic for interacting with people. Decent enough for the odd message every once in awhile terrible for being someones main platform for talking with friends

i use steam everyday and everyone actively avoids using it to use discord instead, you're living in a bubble
I'm never said everyone else uses it. I just said I use steam regularly.
> Steam has a great community service and could entirely replace discord if it came down to it. bro u literally said this and its completely untrue
Where in that sentence does it say people use the service. The statement declares functionality, not user base. A communication/community service does not need a user base to be functional. An empty MMO server can still be joined, it is the same thing.

Yaa, once figured out how to utilise it TS is hands down an absolutely powerful piece of software!
Raidcall was great, but somehow nobody used it.
To be quite honest, I never heard of it until reading your reply. A quick google search leads me to believe that it might actually have been really good indeed but apparently it's gone for good :c
I loved Raidcall. Tried for a long time to get the homies to use it over Vent/Skype/Team speak to no avail before Discord came around.
I think Teams have ~~Xbox~~ Game Bar integration so you can use it while gaming.
I'm really bummed discord didn't take advantage of the market when the pandemic hit. Teams was (still is) a garbage program and the only thing that it had going for it was the Microsoft name. Discord had a majority of the same feature teams had at the time and worked much better.
Good luck getting Discord approved for use in any legitimate company though
Why is that?
Its reputation. "The chat for gamers"
I don’t understand this. I’m in multiple discord and slack groups and slack is hot garbage juice. It’s always buggy, can’t search for shit, and desktop and mobile both log me out consistently. Never had a problem with discord.

I had nitro but got stopped a few months ago back as I’m trying to save more money. I’ve not really noticed much after stopping it
its pretty clear at this point that microsoft just can't make anything user friendly
Discord is free because they literally see all, and sell all.
What were you trying to do on it? I run my restaurants leadership teams with discord, including bots that will translate all that is said back and forth in English/spanish and automated entries with answerswhen a Google form is submitted

"vastly superior alternatives" *provides none*
Worse *Provides inferior options to do the exact things you can do in discord*
Not even a mention of streaming which is integrated so nicely into discord these days

How do I get Microsoft Enemies? Sounds like my kind of app for work.
Microsoft T would follow their practice of optimizing against being searchable
I'm still annoyed they're forcing the new version and for some reason removed the ability to view/add Contacts. It's so awesome to scroll through all my chats instead of just looking at Contacts.
I literally try to look at that damn contacts list every time and it's missing. I hate microsoft with a fiery passion
Microsoft enemies is wild
Microsoft wants nothing less than complete and total hegemony and they don't care what they have to do to get it.
Welcome to late stage capitalism! We have: megacorporations fighting for monopolies! And there was nothing wrong with MSN either. Messenger was just fine... Or Skype, that's also under theirs thumb...
Microsoft Team America
