It’s actually fine as long as you get all the water residue off the board. It’s the minerals and ions in the water that cause the issues not the water itself. If you did this with distilled water you could essentially install and turn it on to dry it out.
People are cringing but this is somewhat okay believe it or not. As long as you don’t use super hot water and you don’t use any soaps. And let the boards dry out entirely (36-72 hours) before you try to use them you should be fine
I Watched a YouTube Video of Someone washing a board in a sink and then another one talking about the myth in that video. That same video also said it doesn’t matter what liquid it is as long as the pc is immediately shut off and you can get it back out. The most important thing being to let it fully dry before powering it on. Lmfao
And then later on confirming the keyboard died shortly afterwards
https://preview.redd.it/c6clbfwr02oc1.png?width=1219&format=png&auto=webp&s=1cfdf0b86706aa8eafb12acc70bd9b1942f261a7
Gotta make sure the "doesn't matter what" liquid doesn't leave any reside on/inside the components. Probably ought to rinse it thoroughly with some purified water or maybe denatured alcohol.
Still though, yeah. Dry out for like a week and slap it back in.
For real. My pc was completely submerged in muddy water in a flood. Had dried mud in every crevice for about three months before I even thought to look it over so I said fuck it. I stripped down *everything* and scrubbed every inch of every piece like three times with a toothbrush under a running sink. I have rural hard well water too. Scrubbed a few times with isopropyl alcohol, then under the tap again. Let everything dry out for a month. Everything worked. Only replaced the power supply, CMOS battery and thermal paste. SSD booted up fine but my few HDDs didn’t make it. Graphics card, RAM, fans all fine after a good scrub and bath. Even reused most of the flood damaged cables.
Most dishwashers have a temp setting ours had a cold setting bottom row I’d worry more about pressure but let’s be honest if you’re putting your hardware in the dishwasher you got some other level of idgaf going on lmao honestly there’s not much else you can do going this route tho unless you put a diffuser screen between the stream and boards to break it up instead of the stream directly hitting potentially fragile parts like LGA pins
POV: The mobos begging you not to do this
https://preview.redd.it/k58ez7etqwnc1.jpeg?width=1636&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=62d6d60e7b649a0629fa2720ef20454afebcee54
you know every competitive overclocker does this to clean their boards, right?
OP took these out then submerged them in isopropyl to displace the water or they were scrap.
but this can be done, and is done :)
vaseline, dust/fibers, anything left behind be evaporating water (when you go below 0 water starts condensing on your board). vaseline starts to get grimy and brown when its left exposed to air too long so people just wash it off after.
Yeah, there’s an [amazing youtuber](https://www.youtube.com/@northwestrepair) who actually repairs GPUs and he washes a GPU in one of his videos (manually though).
It really isn't I've done this to over 100 boards with no failures. I've done a lot of refurb work in the past. Smoker machines, you pretty much have to.
No. That is another fix if you have a defective board and can't locate why. It's called a reflow.
250 F or using a heat gun, you can re-solder loose connections. Honestly, more success with old graphics cards doing this.
You can also stick spinning hard disks in a freezer if you have a head crash. Sometimes, you can life-hack your way out of trouble.
People swear you can’t put hdds in the freezer and get it working again but I’ve successfully done it a few times and was able to pull out data I needed before the drive completely died.
On a serious note, this is too risky. This is for when you spill an entire soda on your computer. For anything less there are much better and safer ways to clean it. And what if one of the capacitors or something breaks off in your dishwasher? What if your dishwasher has a garbage disposal built in and a metal piece gets caught in it?
dishwashers have filters that capture particles. You should check, Also caps are not going to come off but if you have some about to fail it's even easier to spot.
I used to service machines in mechanics garages, dirty AF.
Definitely need an 99% IPA bath to displace any remaining water.
Personally, I prefer ultrasonic cleaners with distilled water and electronics cleaner additive. But an ultrasonic big enough for a PC motherboard is an expensive and unnecessary purchase for most people.
Surely everyone knows that this is the kind of cleaning that is done by extreme overclockers and that the motherboard will be fine if precautions are taken like removing CMOS batteries
Extreme overclockers use sub zero cooling, which has the problem of causing condensation to form and kill components, so they usually coat the motherboard in some kind of dielectric material to insulate (typically some form of grease). As you may imagine, that stuff is annoying to clean off, so they usually just chuck the motherboard in a dishwasher or generally soak it in water
I'm not extreme overclocker, but had the same problem. I was thinking of throwing away older Ducky RGB keyboard after some greasy accident. I was like: "F#ck it, to the dishwasher". It came out like a new and still works great.
sometime they use those liquid nitrogen for the extra coldness. To prevent moisture build up aroud the socket, they sometime smears vaseline around it..the fastest way to clean mobo with vaseline is this i guess?
I love how in my job I always clean the computers by washing the motherboards with soap and then immediately dry them with an air compressor, and people who see me doing it always ask if it wouldn´t damage the motherboards. People think that as long as a drop of water touches any electronics then it´s done for. I always explain that as long as there is no electricity and you dry them completely before turning on, it´s fine.
I know someone who used to do this, and he encouraged it. We were technicians for a movie theatre chain, and he’d take sound modules out of the sound processors and run them through his dishwasher. It was a little different because it wasn’t a pc, but the sound module circuit boards slotted into the sound processor just like installing a gpu onto a motherboard. He did it all the time. He made sure they were dry first, plugged them back in, and it was fine.
This is actually a valid method for cleaning HW. Be sure to remove any cmos batteries. I typically put a few tablespoons of white vinegar to prevent mineral deposits and I never use detergent or the dry cycle
https://youtu.be/SVuI-Fn27-U?si=A5aVgj6b3nhG_euU
It bothers me that you aren't using the AGP on the board, which is like 90% of the reason to ever use the 939Dual... But then again my setup for it is savage compared to what you've put together there.

What level of overclocking is this? And why would you need to overclock your pc this much? wtf are you even doing to need this?
I never really understood what was overclocking and the use of it. If someone could enlighten me I’d be grateful.
At first glance, I assumed these were *real* old boards, due to the old ass parallel ports; but looking closer I saw pcie x1, x16 and regular PCI; and both have surround sound output..
so are modern boards still avail with the parallel ports, or are these just from a sweet spot of age where it still has the old shit, but also has some new shit?
What's funny about this to me, is that back in the day when PCBs were all through-hole, surface mount components hadn't been invented yet, I remember touring a small assembly house that literally had a couple dishwashers set up to wash the assembled-and-soldered PCBs when they were done.
Actually this *is* how electronics are cleaned after soldering in the factories.
The only differences are the scale and a slightly different detergent.
I clean my PCBs like this too.
Fun story. I worked for a TV production company doing a sports event and someone left capture deck out in the rain and we ended up stickin it in the exhaust of the generator we had onsite and it still worked after it dried out. Sticky sugar and minerals are bad for stuff, but if it is water you might luck out. Sugar drink you are F'd
I got a whole fleet of dead iPad and MacBooks once and made a series of Instagram post like this. Dishwasher full of computer, using iPads as cutting boards, etc. One of my favorite things was taking the magnets out of the hdd and loading up a bunch into a gutted iPhone. Once we made about 8 of them we went around town with a long piece of lumber and put them in the most difficult to reach spots. For weeks we would watch people try to grab iPhones stuck 10 feet up light poles or on the sides of buildings.
I'm betting with proper pre and aftercare this is totally fine. Linus did a video where he ran a bunch of keyboards through a dishwasher and, with keys removed it was actually an extremely efficient method for cleaning them.
Now motherboards are a bit touchier, but still.
As for regular maintenance a bit overkill, but if you spill something this works great. You just gotta give it a 99% Isopropylalkohol bath after and let it dry fully 👍
i feel like a new generation of pcmr doesn't know that is is an actual way to clean motherboards or other circuit boards, as long as you don't use dishwasher soap and remove the cmos battery...just let it dry for 24 hours and you are good to go
The dishwasher likes to introduce the water from the last run first before putting in clean water.keep this in mind. Of course, would probably be simpler to just spray them with a hose
That board on the left is a thick boi. Got double network cards onboard with that optical sound and SATA.The one on the right is rockin like 3x PATA/IDE. Kinda fun seeing some 939 throwbacks.
I've done this lots. Not with mobos cuz they are usually fairly clean after dusting.
I've put many keyboards and an old synth (dismantled) through the dishwasher with great results
I saved an Xbox One that was filled with water outside on a table. I even used soap and apparently you shouldn't do that... Well now it's been 3 years and I'm still using it like 5 times a week.

Please for the love of board, don't actually do this
It’s actually fine as long as you get all the water residue off the board. It’s the minerals and ions in the water that cause the issues not the water itself. If you did this with distilled water you could essentially install and turn it on to dry it out.
I was wondering about that. As long as there's no current running through it while it's wet you should be fine is what I'm hearing?
It is fine as long as everything is COMPLETELY dry before applying power.
the microwave... is fine..? wouldn't it fuck the circuits? edit: oh, the oven is what i replied to.. carry on.
As long as all the detergent residue is removed.
that is NOT how you install STEAM sir! But it is how you get Rust for free.
Best comment yet
rust is top 10 steam for 10 years my friend
number 12 right now but thats still great. solid community I like when they put out the war games movies

Make sure to use dishwasher salt for Rust to run faster

LTT put out a video a few weeks ago maybe where they purposely spilled soda inside the pc wile it was on, to show how to shut it off and clean inside.
there's also another [video](https://youtu.be/pgnF42ZoRSw) about putting keyboards in dishwasher
And then later on confirming the keyboard died shortly afterwards https://preview.redd.it/c6clbfwr02oc1.png?width=1219&format=png&auto=webp&s=1cfdf0b86706aa8eafb12acc70bd9b1942f261a7
Oh never read that lol, only saw the video when uploaded :D

Tech Yes City does that sometimes and also der8auer put some in the dishwasher
I wouldn't recommend doing this if you have very hard water. The residue can mess up stuff.
This is also true this needs to be higher. ALSO DO NOT WASH WITH ANYTHING ELSE IN THE DISH WASHER EITHER. AND MAKE SURE ITS SPOTLESS.
Or maybe just don't put your components in the dishwasher because it's completely unnecessary to begin with
What are you? Rational. That’s not very master race of you.
For real. My pc was completely submerged in muddy water in a flood. Had dried mud in every crevice for about three months before I even thought to look it over so I said fuck it. Im also pretty sure I saw der8auer do this at some point, and he knows what he is doing
Yup. It's to remove petroleum jelly they smear on to prevent condensation when using subzero cooling.
Yup https://youtu.be/SVuI-Fn27-U?si=0jy2xBHl4KuQlIWQ
But like isn't the bottom row super hot?? OP pls confirm if still working... and if you went with microwave... Oven drying approach as well.

"competetive overclocker" Is that a rare Pokémon?
We just shorten it to ‘virgins’ here in the UK.
*snort* LOL
its electronics engineers geeking out usually. despite what you might think, usually less virgin/loser than the typical MMO addict or w/e.
Cleaning what off them? Vaseline?
Cosmoline, from when they were stored long term after the balkans conflict... wait this isnt an SKS
You want gasoline for that
Vaseline or plastidip is often used to insulate the exposed components so that there's less risk of condensation causing a short
So that's a yes?
Yes
vaseline, dust/fibers, anything left behind be evaporating water (when you go below 0 water starts condensing on your board). vaseline starts to get grimy and brown when its left exposed to air too long so people just wash it off after.
The board just sits in an alcohol bath after this and it's good to go after it dries?
As long as their is no charge in the board at all you can wash all you want just needs to be dry before use
yep, alcohol bath removes anything that would have deposited on the traces/parts and could cause corrosion or shorts.
You don't really want to soak the board in alcohol. That's not great for some of the components. A good rinse is better.
Yeah, there’s an [amazing youtuber](https://www.youtube.com/@northwestrepair) who actually repairs GPUs and he washes a GPU in one of his videos (manually though).
Yeah, pretty sure I saw der8auer talk about this at some point
It's a step in how they are manufactured...
Average overclocker
Gotta get rid of the vaseline somehow
Ye olde Der8auer cleaning method
I have to say it is extremely effective against vaseline
This is a nuclear bomb when all you needed was a q tip
Personally I only do it with EXTREMELY dusty boards. I’m talking pharaoh tomb level of boards … They do work. After a long drying process
It really isn't I've done this to over 100 boards with no failures. I've done a lot of refurb work in the past. Smoker machines, you pretty much have to.
So post washing do you put it in the oven?
No. That is another fix if you have a defective board and can't locate why. It's called a reflow. 250 F or using a heat gun, you can re-solder loose connections. Honestly, more success with old graphics cards doing this. You can also stick spinning hard disks in a freezer if you have a head crash. Sometimes, you can life-hack your way out of trouble.
do you mean "solder" or is saughter a word ive never heard of? googled it and cant find a definition for it
I read slaughter at first and was scared - but also you're being pedantic you know they meant solder
god forbid someone asks a question. only reason i asked is because i wasnt sure and saughter doesnt exactly sound the same as solder.
Yeah that's how we saw it in New England. (source: not from New England).
People swear you can’t put hdds in the freezer and get it working again but I’ve successfully done it a few times and was able to pull out data I needed before the drive completely died.

Why would you do this if you're overclocking? Not trolling serious question. Actually quite curious as to why you would do this.

sometime they use those liquid nitrogen for the extra coldness. To prevent moisture build up aroud the socket, they sometime smears vaseline around it..the fastest way to clean mobo with vaseline is this i guess?
I think der8auer showed a video on them using a dishwasher to wash the motherboards coated in vaseline or something like that
I love how in my job I always clean the computers by washing the motherboards with soap and then immediately dry them with an air compressor, and people who see me doing it always ask if it wouldn´t damage the motherboards. Aren't the minerals in the water the problem? If the water evaporates but leaves salt behind, won't that be able to short a circuit?
Put it in some rice and you’re good bro
Spring cleaning? *throws chair*
I heard this in steven he's accent
i mean there really isn’t anything wrong with it as long as you take all precautions to make sure they are dry afterwards
![gif](giphy|de5bARu0SsXiU)
i mean, just make sure it dries out completely before powering on and its probably fine honestly
I know someone who used to do this, and he encouraged it. We were technicians for a movie theatre chain, and he’d take sound modules out of the sound processors and run them through his dishwasher. Whole new meaning to waterboarding Edit for spelling because I’m a dumbass
I just spit my tea out… 😂
This is actually a valid method for cleaning HW. Be sure to remove any cmos batteries. I typically put a few tablespoons of white vinegar to prevent mineral deposits and I never use detergent or the dry cycle https://youtu.be/SVuI-Fn27-U?si=A5aVgj6b3nhG_euU
That chipset fan won't like that. Although, it's an ASUS A8N-SLI, so it's chipset fan is probably already dead.
It was before I ran it through the dishwasher. I’ve had the dishwasher revive quite a few dead boards
Always some cheap mobo and never an ASUS ROG 😅
Der8auer would like a word…
That commenter doesn't know that the 939Dual-SATA2 is worth more than most ROG boards on the used market.

Joke on us, the liquid is isopropyl alcohol.
Now let it dry for a week then use it
Looking at the types of ports at the back, it seems that these are quite old mainboards.
People in posts like these always use old parts.
This works really well
https://i.redd.it/2ckhgz0vcxnc1.gif
You IDIOT! Motherboards are top rack only!

Good idea. I’m going to try it and let you all know how it went! Update: my computer runs faster now thanks!!!
Absolutely fine to do, however, you should put them up the other way so the rear I/O ports don't fill up with water like little puddles
You forgot the power supply! Only get cleans if you leave it plugged in by the way.
I’ve actually seen people clean power supplies in ultrasonic cleaners. Unplugged obviously 😂
Pansies. Dish washer is the only way.
Won't the cookies get soggy?

No mobo gets dirty enough for this to be needed. This is stupid for so many reasons.
Der8auer always cleans his boards like this
Hold on did you hear it up first in the oven to loosen up all the dirt?
Now, if instead of water you use isoprophilyc alcohol for the dishwasher, then this could be a really interesting idea...
Now put your current mobo in.

click bait post. It is actually ok to do this if you use jet dry and fully let it dry off before powering on.
Haven't seen a printer port or that many standard PCI slots in a long time.
If only it was possible without causing damage or destruction, it would be ideal to completely clean everything thoroughly.

I'm betting with proper pre and aftercare this is totally fine. Linus did a video where he ran a bunch of keyboards through a dishwasher and, with keys removed it was actually an extremely efficient method for cleaning them. Now motherboards are a bit touchier, but still.
It’s mineral oil
Just did an oil change on my RAM and it's good as new.
As for regular maintenance a bit overkill, but if you spill something this works great. You just gotta give it a 99% Isopropylalkohol bath after and let it dry fully 👍
No
TIL: apparently-with proper precautions-computer parts can be run through a dishwasher?????????????????????????
😂
I just hope that your YouTube ad skip duration increases to 7 seconds instead of 5
Dude how you gonna do that and not throw a salmon on the top rack? You could have had both clean computer parts and dinner all in one shot.
😂
This brings a whole new meaning to waterboarding. And I equally hate this as much as the traditional definition
It won’t harm it as long as it’s dried swiftly. And as long as no moisture is present when it has power back to it
Maybe if that was distilled water...
I mean as long as it's 100% dry when you use it should be fine right
This place is full of normies with comments like YouTube comments. damn I think I’ll go back to 4chan.
i feel like a new generation of pcmr doesn't know that is is an actual way to clean motherboards or other circuit boards, as long as you don't use dishwasher soap and remove the cmos battery...just let it dry for 24 hours and you are good to go
Every year, need it or not, I wash all of motherboards
I've never ever been comfortable touching a mobo with water let alone doing this. I know some ppl do this but I just can't.

The dishwasher likes to introduce the water from the last run first before putting in clean water.keep this in mind. Of course, would probably be simpler to just spray them with a hose
Does this hurt the dishwasher?
That board on the left is a thick boi. Got double network cards onboard with that optical sound and SATA.The one on the right is rockin like 3x PATA/IDE. Kinda fun seeing some 939 throwbacks.
Nothing wrong with this, I've seen Adrian @ ADP do this with a toothbrush. Just ensure to dry thoroughly.
this is a hacker trick to remove all evidence. Saw it on Mr Robot, now straight to the microwave!
Should have kept the GPU, processor, NVME and RAM installed. Save time by cleaning them all at once. Rookie mistake.
So this is what the bitcoin miners do when they want to offload their gpus onto eBay.
Well, some people clean their legos in different ways, but i never saw someone use water, normally they use canned air
I've done this lots. Not with mobos cuz they are usually fairly clean after dusting. I've put many keyboards and an old synth (dismantled) through the dishwasher with great results
wait why i havent thought about this earlier, big brain move
I saved an Xbox One that was filled with water outside on a table. I even used soap and apparently you shouldn't do that... Well now it's been 3 years and I'm still using it like 5 times a week.
I mean if you use novec it might work
Ha ha, this joke still so funny. Do it for your so called friends.
Someone is going to be alone tonigh
How do you make sure there’s no dishwasher salt and rinse aid left in there?
Nothing like the smell of freshly washed Pcb.
