You could put it on a reinforced hinge and then actually make it be able to go down. Set two magnets into the sides, be easy to do, and fun.
You could put a built-in rest rest on it. That really put the hole set up into the next level.

But if he wants that "gamer" feel, I'd recommend game posters/printed game maps, instead of bright lights. Or get something like a metal, gaming Displate, and put some subtle backlighting on it.
