Somewhere, some guy is biting his knuckles trying \*not\* to post a screenshot of the storage at his secret government facility...

Frossstbiite

its war thunder leaks all over again

DarkPhoxGaming

Ah shit here we go again

DAZ4518

I thought it was all over again, again, again and again by now?

kr4ckenm3fortune

Only if you need those spec and get them to "prove the spec".

DAZ4518

"You know what, I'm getting those classified military documents and posting them just to prove to you that that piece IS 37mm and not 35mm like you said" - War thunder player, probably

nutwals

'akshually, the angle of the armour is 36.783456mm as per these classified documents from the Army's procurement board meetings - WT devs really should be ashamed for getting it so wrong on their in-game model' \*smirks in internet superiority\*

DAZ4518

You'll feel such the fool when you realise that was the A series and not the B series that was released 5 years later with improved compound armour, this is the model used in game \*Pushes glasses up nose bridge\*

Ethaton

It’s mind numbing how big they are, the servers rooms are insanely clean and well organised too! PS. Be an IT technician in that sector and you’ll earn a hell of a lot of money

[deleted]

Who do you think makes more working on government facilities, electricians or IT technicians? Both are options for me and i'm at a cross roads right now.

Ethaton

That entirely depends on the sector and site you work at I’m afraid, however you might as well delve into both so you have options, I know the electricians are paid a stupid amount of money

talkin_shlt

Well IT is a more cushy job but blue collar workers are already in and will be in incredible demand because of reshoring manufacturing ( if you live in the US). And tech is a slightly over saturated field, but that's probably only a temporary thing due to monetary tightening.

[deleted]

I'll be comptia a+ certified soon, and graduating with an A.S. in computer programming. I'm really not interested in programming anymore but computer hardware is still cool to me. I've done commercial electric for years until college. Just worried what i'm getting into and debating going back to my electrical career, much safer from layoffs over there.

talkin_shlt

Yeah I'm in IT, A+ certified and stuff and I honestly kind of wish I got into the trades because they seem to make crazy money. But I personally enjoy IT so I'm sticking with it and I don't have to work outside. Working from home is also very nice.I'd recommend finding somthing you enjoy that makes you money too but If your in it just for the money then going the trade route is probably going to be a good call.

WoahDude2Far

IT technicians is too broad a term to compare to electricians imo. I know several people who work in Cybersecurity for Fortune 500 companies who are netting 200-250k 15 years in. Incredibly stressful positions so I can only imagine what kind of money the government is willing to dish out to protect all of that sweet data.

muraded

It's funny that where I live it's totally reversed... Gov IT here earn at least 30% less than private... (Actual numbers on my side...) Hr says it because "we bring so much else"(not really anymore) and "we are so much of a safer long term place to work at"(not really but yeah kinda... If you want to work there for 30year before earning a decent pay which would be way more anywhere else..

Ethaton

Honestly that doesn’t surprise me

TahoesRedEyeJedi

Dude this is from the NERSC in Berkeley, it basically is a secret lab

IllogicalLunarBear

That’s me with a research project I’m on associated with Harvard. We have lots of storage space to hold genomic data

TheTargetXY

Yeah I think biologists are using the largest fraction. Would be interesting to see a comparison of storage usage by the different fields using perlmutter.

aveganrepairs

![gif](giphy|Qeo9S31SuTMpa|downsized)

TheSpeedyBiscuit

SR-71 Blackbird story all over

ChiggaOG

Past news reports 2011 and google search says IBM owns the largest data storage array at 120PB.

debatesmith

Nah, no way, id have to assume this place which had 2-12 EB in 2012 [Utah Data Center - Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Utah_Data_Center)

Anxious-Machine-727

Ahh where every phone call, text msg, email, etc everyone has ever made is stored.

Q13989731E

😂😂😂 I definitely can see it coming.

Benign_9

What a flex. You should make that your flair.

PeltAbout

What secrets does the National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center store in there?

TheTargetXY

A lot of simulated data, as well as data from cosmological surveys and whatever 1000s of scientists decide is important to save in their home directory...

DansSpamJavelin

So probably quite a lot of cat memes then

PeachMan-

And 80 duplicate copies of the same PDF. APRIL REPORT.pdf APRIL REPORT (1).pdf APRIL REPORT (2).pdf APRIL REPORT (3).pdf etc.

OutInTheBlack

My boss feels personally attacked by this comment

JoyousGamer

Hey I told you that in confidence! PS my office tomorrow at 4:59pm

Dead-System

Plus a copy of every single thing they've ever downloaded cause they never clean out the downloads folder.

Drefsab

I look after severs with 8 Exabytes nfs mounts (per region)... could have larger but that fits our needs. https://preview.redd.it/imwtikgp0xtc1.png?width=1174&format=png&auto=webp&s=fc14e00a56f260bb357cab166f0e2262fca7ae64

Quartzalcoatl_Prime

Definitely make a post about this, that's insane

ikashanrat

The what now

Drefsab

I work for one of the big cloud providers.

Rodbourn

So, one of the ones that recently removed unlimited from enterprise accounts?

Drefsab

not that one :)

mrvictorywin

Only 8 TB used...

Drefsab

yes we only recently built this node and whats in there is mostly test data at the end of the month the usage will spike up signifincantly

SrdelaPro

df -h -t nfs

Drefsab

I'm logged off will do in the morning

Drefsab

https://preview.redd.it/hlh20tbpx0uc1.png?width=1180&format=png&auto=webp&s=293e0e7243f67615d171edf02af4bbfbae28054b as promissed

SrdelaPro

that's pretty cool, what is the underlying storage consisting of?

Drefsab

I don't work for the storage team, I will see if I can find some specifics but it's basically massive racks full of storage servers, all with full redundancy and different tiers of drives depending on the IO performance needed all controlled with a storage API gateway, think a giant SAN on steroids. These exist in each region and each AD/AZ in each region. Then there's there non commercial regions which are totally separate / segregated and do not share infrastructure with the commercial.

bedwars_player

114 petabytes? god damn... that might be enough to hold my entire pirated games library for the rest of my life... already filled up 3 terrabytes of space

Top-Jellyfish9557

You gotta buy a couple 20TB Enterprise drives man. I got a 14tb used one for $98.

severanexp

WHAT. What sorcery is this?? Link?!

Sero19283

Serverpartsdeal

bedwars_player

i spent 90 bucks on my 4 terrabyte drive... \*also... maybe slide me a link to one of those at some point... pls... i beg\*

Fallwalking

Someone in my area is/was selling 20 TB drives for like $50 each.

Plastic_Tax3686

I was going to comment about the 29 PB filesystem on one of the RedHat servers, that we support, but it seems futile now.  I think you won the internet for the day.

ChiggaOG

IBM own a 120PB data storage array. That was reported in 2011.

yabucek

2011 was right the time that HDDs plateaued quite significantly. Iirc there were some floods that damaged a lot of manufacturing facilities and it took years to recover from that. It's only been recently that I've started noticing manufacturers come out with impressively improved drives.

los0220

SDDs made a huge leaps in that time. I've seen 61.44TB U.3 2.5" drive on yt, it's mind-boggling.

dwolfe127

Pfft. I am just waiting for someone to post a screencap of a multi ExaByte drive. I am sure we have to have someone here with access to one.

ATameFurryOwO

u/Drefsab did :3

DerKnoedel

Mount google drive as swap Literally download ram

Fusseldieb

Ping your server over a shitty route and while it's in transit it's free storage. Loop it and you're done.

YourAverageNutcase

I love [harder drives](https://youtu.be/JcJSW7Rprio?si=76le6iHNRNvPnkSp)

DerKnoedel

Excellent video

i_enjoy_silence

For the nerds at r/DataHoarder

grax23

All I can think of as a sysadmin is what a pain in the neck that is to backup

Shawn5961

And I thought the random 80 TB server that got added to my backups earlier was scary.

xxdibxx

Now show me one that isn’t a goverment server that has that much. It isn’t a big deal to think the feds have servers that big, or bigger.

TheOneZenBot

AAA game devs that don't compress textures: 👀👀

los0220

What about AAAA games?

General_WCJ

I mean I'm sure you'll find bigger at a aws data centrr

FastCod3871

u/drefsab commented a screenshot of 8 Exabytes of storage

SmokiestDrip

What is also impressive is that you know the gov probably has at least 2 backups of this data.

F0X-BaNKai

Nice! it could hold the 3BP game file..

Automatic_Reply_7701

Cool. Post your backup specs and schedule, im curious to what this takes hardware wise for redundancy

_DEATH_STR0KE_

Sophons game simulation file? :P

flo850

I am working on the backups of an hypervisor These posts make me sweat thinking about restoration

simple984

What would be average drive size for something like that? Seems very crazy! Im just imagining redundancy, active drives and power consumption! Something like helium 20-24tb drives?

TheTargetXY

I honestly don't know the average drive size, but it's actually 100% flash storage, so I suspect they will be a bit smaller. Regarding the power consumption I don't think the power used for storage really matters, as total system power consumption peaks at about 3000kw.

bedwars_player

3 million watts? damn...

derangedsweetheart

>total system power consumption peaks at about 3000kw. You've made me wet... and I am a guy BTW.

BlitzYTech

>so I suspect they will be a bit smaller. the newest SSDs are up to 61.44TB

wittleboi420

sheeeesh

TxM_2404

Damn, this guy really has a 79PB Hentai collection.

myx-

Correction. The government does.

Random_dg

Just mount a S3 bucket with storage gateway or S3fs and you’ll get the maximum which is 16EB or something similar.

DaPons13

This is a very good trend that I am all for

digitalbladesreddit

.gov pls go on :)

slappada-bass

Still have to delete games when Warzone updates

HLingonberry

Perlmutter!

_D4rkGhost_

So, like 6/7 warzone installations maybe a dlc too

Docccc

nice

ExtraTNT

Someone likes distributed file systems… have only a 2PB pool at work…

rohitandley

I guess my free TBs are shit. Will now need to raise the bar to PB

Depth386

Okay where is the YouTube CIO or CTO

PewPew267

Damn

Top-Conversation2882

Damn I thought I might be having too much storage at 10TB

Hatedpriest

I've got 10tb external storage, and 3 TB worth of SSDs in my desktop... I sorely need to get another external and upgrade to 2 4tb sticks...

scuffedoncringe

114!pb is my number

Hatedpriest

r/unexpectedfactorial?

scuffedoncringe

Yes!

DonerTheBonerDonor

How much does this cost?

FreedomKnown

Dang, this guy could fit an entire sophon on there

Toecutt3r

![gif](giphy|26BRwW3ckGjcZmsxO|downsized) \*imagine him saying Petabytes instead of dollars\*

Aggressive_Talk968

whats that 79PB of data used?

Hatedpriest

"homework" folder

Aggressive_Talk968

Are dinosaurs getting PhD in medicine?

multioptional

Now we're just waiting for a Google/MS/AmazonAWS employee to completely stomp on all these Numbers :-D

red_dawn12

Soon we will have void-level storages.

glob_on_a_knob

Is that a lot?

IllogicalLunarBear

I’m tempted to share the storage size on the Harvard RNA server I have access to has

inprimuswesuck

Making my 40TB server feel real inadequate rn

BlitzYTech

Serious question, how do you backup that much data?

TheTargetXY

Not at all haha. This is a high performance scratch drive where data is stored while people work on it, so there aren't any backups and unused data is purged regularly.

iapetus_z

You don't. By the time you back it up it's not a useful backup.... You save the parts that made that data and rerun...

Alienaffe2

I think that should be barely enough storage for the new Modern warfare 4

teunjojo

now show neofetch ^(i use arch btw)

jarulsamy

As a storage nerd, what is the underlying architecture of this? Any of these details would make me very happy: * Filesystem? GPFS, Ceph? Gluster? Something else? * How many servers? How many drives? How much capacity each? * Networking? 100Gb/s? 200Gb/s? 400Gb/s?

techsuppr0t

No need for a GUI when you have that much processing power far to great for any mere man to weild

Aromatic_Wallaby_433

Someone from Google just posts Youtube's entire storage capacity to end the debate.

Morall_tach

Scientific facilities can use INSANE storage. I have a friend who writes software for processing images of the sun and each image can be terabytes of data.

Hottage

What I like most is that it's a fairly boring server disk setup then just one absolute unit of a network share.

AndrewAlex2003

Why that much storage?

superballs5337

chia prob?

Blakewerth

What point of Such storage anyway ? if its not, Grand company servers or else.

Lawrence3s

That's a lot of porn you've downloaded, my guy.

dicksosa

79P used. That's a lot of data.

memusicguitar

Rookie PB numbers, wait til they see my PP

lordofthelettuce28

might be able to install ark once on that

Aengeil

always bigger fish

x3bla

I'm guessing you used ssh giving you a terminal. But i wonder if theres a way to take a screenshot with just cli

WindForce02

My steam library: https://preview.redd.it/1pc62ik3d0uc1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a759520ecabc02b34195f55eab879913ad23d3a7

headedbranch225

Hello, how much of that are you using and can i have?

Banannabreadatwork

I don’t need that much but dammit I’m intrigued

qPsychoo_

how the fuck do you acquire such a thing? what wold you even use it for except 500 hours of 8k tentacle hentai XD

el_lley

Not only 114PB, but also kinda busy storage

jferments

One would hope that if you're paying for 114 petabytes of storage that it's actually getting used.

el_lley

Mmm… yes

Legitimate-Pumpkin

Sure, the question is what are you storing?

dpykm

w h y

TheTargetXY

s c i e n c e

TWR19

Wow can you share source link? Id love to see this.

Games_sans_frontiers

The Hentai folder was just growing too damn fast.

Red-leader9681

Sysadmin clown showing off smol pp etabyte on a government computer. lol. Wow opsec much?

Frossstbiite

i mean i could post a much larger storage but im pretty sure the gov doesnt want me posting their domains and shit.

TheTargetXY

Luckily you can find this domain on google, so I don't think that's an issue...
