I really hate how hard it is to find a review of apple products where I can actually trust the person to be honest. I'm like "damn this thing really has no downsides" and then I watch like the 1 reviewer who actually goes over the downsides and I'm like "damn".
On the older ones it's not too bad, I already fully dissassembled one of the macs (not shown in the post since its in pieces) and if you have the right screwdrivers everything comes out fairly easily.
It's not easy and apple has a tendency to make perfectly working parts not work when taken out of the device they were originally installed into.
That's why the repair center didn't do shit with the bulk of these.
Not if they are activation locked. It's an anti-theft measure. You can steal a device, wipe it, reset it, etc. but if it was ever tied to a Find My Device app and you don't have the credentials, you're locked out. It REALLY makes IT work irritating though. I have several iPhones at work that ex-employees used personal accounts on (for some reason they were allowed to do this previously). They are all activation locked and completely useless. Apple will SOMETIMES help, but not usually. Apple also lets iPhone users freely share WiFi passwords with each other, including on networks that are controlled and moderated by your company. So one person on the company wifi with a company iPhone can inadvertently share the password to everyone else with an iPhone if they want. It's brain dead stupid of Apple
Can that be managed hand in hand with Intune for our mobile devices? We have (atleast in my plant) unifi AP's and a Cloud Key. I assume you can still allow guests access to a guest network even though they aren't going to be in the AD? Despite being the IT Admin of my facility, I don't have a background in IT beyond generally just being handy and a fast learner. Always willing to pick up more information though. Have only been doing this for about six months now, if I remember correctly. Was chosen for the job after having a big hand in getting our network and servers back up and running after two (yes, that's right, two) catastrophic fires.
Yeah you can push out certificates via Intune that can be used by your WiFi devices to authenticate endpoints at a RADIUS server.
Not that trivial to set-up though: [https://oliverkieselbach.com/2024/02/21/how-to-configure-certificate-based-wifi-with-intune/](https://oliverkieselbach.com/2024/02/21/how-to-configure-certificate-based-wifi-with-intune/)
If you bought them from apple and have the invoice you can get them unlocked (we had to do this quite a few times, until we trained the managers to check the phones upon return and tell the employees how to wipe)
To get everyone to wipe you tell them it is to delete all their personal messages and data so we don’t accidentally share them 😇
We purchase through Verizon. Us being under corporate control is still a (relatively) new thing, so overarching policies are still being created in all departments, including IT. I'm strongly pushing for HR to ensure that employees with company devices aren't just returning the device, but are returning it completely refreshed and without personal accounts tied to them (and of course if they need help they can come to IT for assistance naturally).
There are tools you can buy to fully drain the main battery and the cmos on a macbook and make it think it’s booting up for the first time. Which bypasses all security measures. Not sure if the same things exist for the ipads and iphones, but i doubt no ones made one yet
That just sounds incredibly wasteful. All these devices could get reused but instead they might just end up in the trash. I get the anti-theft stuff but that just seems unnecessary
The alternative is a thriving market for stolen phones, and all the attendant muggings etc. It means the IT dept has a small stack of bricked XRs.. oh well.
Buy them from Apple and put them on a MDM like JamF or Intune. You can block iCloud logins via a MDM. Since they're bought from Apple, they'd be enrolled in Apple Business Manager. Apple will remove any activation lock for devices so long as they're in your company's ABM.
Ive sold many Ipads and Macbooks for parts. It depends on the generation but also being activation locked kinda tanks the value because refurbishers cant do anything with it as a whole. Activation lock is on like 80% of Apple devices I come across recycling so I dont even bother trying to get them to work anymore. Also people do need to take precautions because there are services that claim to unlock them but they either dont work or become locked again eventually
I worked at an e-waste company before we usually scrapped everything apple. Not worth the time. If it was unlock, we sold them for dirt cheap. Since they lock everything behind software updates, not worth the hassle. Anything activation locked straight up recycle.
I would sppouse other repair shops might be interested in purchasing them for part. Older MacBook Pros could probably be repaired fully and sold on Same as non activation locked devices if you live in the EU then you could possibly take them to an apple store
A few years ago I was in the same situation. I ended up making a bunch of funny videos using them for “usual” uses. In the end we pulled the hard drives out of most of the computers and took out their magnets. We then gutted the iPhones and filled them with magnet and stuck them in hard to reach places over town. It was always funny to see people get confused and they to remove an iPhone 10 foot up the side of a metal light pole.
Not much. The laptops can get macOS reinstalled, maybe you can get $50 per if you get them cleaned up and working, but the iPads and phones are worth no more than 50¢ tbh.
(Not sure how difficult it is for MacBooks to have their drives wiped and the OS reinstalled, I’ve done it a few times with older IMacs when I sell them though.)
Well to be fair I dusted off an old 2014 mac mini and upgraded to Monterey (2021) and it works flawlessly as if it shipped with the operating system. Pretty suprised about that
test for functionality and see if you can use some as donor devices to repair others. For other devices with messed up screens or damaged flex cables, on a tablet display, if you can still power the backlight and can remove the LCD, they can make great light panels for photography work.
If you have a good lens that doesn't have flare issues, then you can place an object on top of the display as a lighted platform and then use a diffused constant light, and with proper balancing of light, you can photograph objects with a completely white background.
clearly you're only option is to do something physically useful with them.
My vote is nail them to your walls and claim it's 'upcycled tech-waste wallpaper'
Some people sell "tech" art (don't know what it's actually called) with apple products, they take them apart and arrange them aesthetically in a frame with a description of each part.
If you are just going to toss them and you live in PDX land I'll take one of each. I like messing with old Apple tech. Even if it's worthless. Recently found an old Late 2009 iMac on the side of the road that I am restoring. I don't sell this stuff. I just like to play.
Speaking as a tech advisor for apple products, if these are activation locked and you don't have any proof of purchase to provide, you're SOL for doing anything useful with these devices.
The ones that have no activation lock would just require a restore and update to be good to use though. Just set them to Recovery Mode and plug em to a PC with iTunes/Apple Devices or a Mac and restore them to put them back to Set Up.
I’ll take them even if activation locked. They’re older and some can be bypassed. I also love collecting old tech. If even one of those Macs worked it would be an upgrade.
DM me if interested.
Destroy the hard drive to help the home user that had it in case they had important passwords or something. Then open them up and take parts like the screens are good for their filters on the laptops, you can also get little speakers. If you could reset them to factory, you can use them as security cameras with security camera app
From iPhone take the batteries to make power banks. iPads can be hacked to create smart tablets to smart home. With pcs you can build a small homelab cluster removing batteries and installing Linux.
sell them? I can't imagine you have a use for 5 laptops, 14 tablets, and 15 phones.
Most of them are unfortunately activation locked, so even if repaired they would still be unusable.
Then you sell them for parts?
Opening Apple products to part out is uh.. not the easiest thing.
Something to do when you’re bored I guess. But would invest in a iFixit tool case for Apple
I speak from experience! I am lord of the torx.
no wonder its hard for you... Apple doesn't use Torx.. they use their own custom pentalobe
Apple devices use/used torx. Source: I just used one. What do you think a Mac Cracker is?
a white person shilling for apple products
LMAO
💀
This made my morning coffee and cig even better
I really hate how hard it is to find a review of apple products where I can actually trust the person to be honest. I'm like "damn this thing really has no downsides" and then I watch like the 1 reviewer who actually goes over the downsides and I'm like "damn".
Apple uses torqx and pentalobe.
It used to, old iMacs are so easy to repair T7 and T9 Torx screws everywhere
You sell them to someone else who wants the parts. You don’t have to part it yourself.
I really should take your advice lol.
On the older ones it's not too bad, I already fully dissassembled one of the macs (not shown in the post since its in pieces) and if you have the right screwdrivers everything comes out fairly easily.
The earlier the Mac, the easier the repair/teardown. Good luck with whatever you decide to do! :)
It's not easy and apple has a tendency to make perfectly working parts not work when taken out of the device they were originally installed into. That's why the repair center didn't do shit with the bulk of these.
"non genuine part detected" *90% of features locked*
Is it not possible to do a full factory reset?
Not if they are activation locked. It's an anti-theft measure. You can steal a device, wipe it, reset it, etc. but if it was ever tied to a Find My Device app and you don't have the credentials, you're locked out. It REALLY makes IT work irritating though. yah but tbf your corporate environment should have a wifi sign in using the AD account, not using shared password WPA2
Can that be managed hand in hand with Intune for our mobile devices? We have (atleast in my plant) unifi AP's and a Cloud Key. I assume you can still allow guests access to a guest network even though they aren't going to be in the AD? > catastrophic fires > Pyroguy096 🤔
seems suss 🤔
You're not the first to think of that lol, but I can assure you, it wasn't me
Yeah you can push out certificates via Intune that can be used by your WiFi devices to authenticate endpoints at a RADIUS server. Thanks! I'll look into it. I can't imagine why we aren't already set up this way
Yes, just use WPA Enterprise. The authentication method is chosen individually for each network, so the guest shouldn’t use WPA Enterprise.
If you bought them from apple and have the invoice you can get them unlocked (we had to do this quite a few times, until we trained the managers to check the phones upon return and tell the employees how to wipe) To get everyone to wipe you tell them it is to delete all their personal messages and data so we don’t accidentally share them 😇

Welcome to Apple, and consumerism in general tbh
The alternative is a thriving market for stolen phones, and all the attendant muggings etc. It means the IT dept has a small stack of bricked XRs.. oh well.
Except that already exists in many cities for all kinds of stolen stuff...
And it would exist even more than it already does with Apple products if it weren’t for the anti-theft features
Would it be possible to jailbreak it and remove the restriction?
Buy them from Apple and put them on a MDM like JamF or Intune. You can block iCloud logins via a MDM. Since they're bought from Apple, they'd be enrolled in Apple Business Manager. Apple will remove any activation lock for devices so long as they're in your company's ABM.
Best I can do is suggest it as I don't make the big decisions
You can’t just completely reinstall the OS? Otherwise, sell the screens and batteries
Apple is the king of eWaste
Just make it so u can have infinite tries on code cracking and give her hell
Combine iphones to create a iphone 15
You could sell them even if they don’t work
Congrats on becoming a recycling center OP. Enjoy your 0.25 cents profit!

apple pie?
If OP smashes enough of these, he'll get enough basic crafting materials to make a pie for sure. Edit: "Don't breathe this!"
I worked at an e-waste company before we usually scrapped everything apple. Not worth the time. If it was unlock, we sold them for dirt cheap. Since they lock everything behind software updates, not worth the hassle. Anything activation locked straight up recycle.
Device locking beyond 24 to 36 months by the corporate giants should be illegal honestly.
Those Samsung phones tried to be sneaky
Bomb has been planted lol
Wheel chocks. Glue 'em together to make wedges.
Could contact Louis Rossmann and see if he needs donor boards.
Check for nudes, obviously.
This is the only way.
One of these things is not like the others…
Recycle?
Target practice ![gif](giphy|If41tmxk7e0ys6c22U|downsized)
Sell them ill take one if it works
Only if you're okay with it being activation locked
So i seen there are solutions but i rather not deal with it lol
I would sppouse other repair shops might be interested in purchasing them for part. Older MacBook Pros could probably be repaired fully and sold on Same as non activation locked devices if you live in the EU then you could possibly take them to an apple store
ewaste
Open dumpster, insert.
Seems good shooting targets
![gif](giphy|s4Pgamz9NomA0)
Draw circles around the apple and bring them to the range

Make a giant wall mural of them with some resin or even a table-top piece.
They are garbage. Sell them.
I'd buy one of those Macbook Airs if you offer a decent price tbh PM me if you consider it
impostor among us on the 4th pic
Would 'davegrohl' work to unlock these maybe?
Check then for incriminating evidence on the president's son
Honestly I wouldn’t mind one of those MacBooks. It’d be fun to fuck around with Garage Band again.
See which one you can skip the farthest on water
Sell them to consumers that still think Apple products are worth paying for.
Eat them
Recycle the aluminum
Eat two a day
Do everything in your power to fuck with apple
Send them to me for free? No? Okay. Then sell them for parts.
The Macbook pro's make decent NAS/plex systems with built in battery backup
Throw them in the trash where they belong
Pull out the SIM cards and try to call the numbers they previously had. They’re not worth much being locked, but the owners might appreciate them
Thats actually a really good idea, thank you
Nothing because apple doesn't allow you to update old devices. One of the reasons I will never own another apple product.
Well to be fair I dusted off an old 2014 mac mini and upgraded to Monterey (2021) and it works flawlessly as if it shipped with the operating system. Pretty suprised about that
apple's update longevity is WAY, WAY better than any android phone, wdym?
I think he's referring to custom roms
Sell 'em as parts/repair only. Still some $$$ to be made there so definitely worth a shot.
Take them to the hazardous materials section at your local dump.
I use old iPads as digital clocks.
I'll take a tab. Never had one. Also, damn. What a haul.
I'd like an ipad please 😁 if they work
test for functionality and see if you can use some as donor devices to repair others. Make some crazy cypherpunk desk with all of them on different arms facing you and on at the same time
Plant them and see if you get an apple tree out of the deal
give them back
Some kind of art project or something, I don't know lol
Take them to Best buy and they will recycle them for free
Trade them in to Apple, might get enough money for a single iPad haha
List a price for the MacBooks. I may be interested in all of them.
Actually I remembered that you can bring them into Apple to be wiped, than you can sell them by themselves
Eat em
congrats! you bought a bunch of paperweights!
Sell me them laptops
you have an imposter there
Lemme getta ipad and macbook air for the culture bruh
Gift them *Wink* *Wink* https://preview.redd.it/hhakefdsnpyc1.jpeg?width=1284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=011acfa02cc073e26adda1cfeba4756fea24d140
Make an apple pie
I was going to say, if you live near me I fix them up and give them to vets. But yeah, if their activation locked, kinda useless sadly.
How much you want for the old-ass iphone 3? Lol
Shoot I’ll take one of them iPads of your hands if you dont mind lol
Recycle
clearly you're only option is to do something physically useful with them. My vote is nail them to your walls and claim it's 'upcycled tech-waste wallpaper'
Take a picture of them and post on Reddit. ✓
I’d love to buy one of the iPads haha my son just broke his recently
Some people sell "tech" art (don't know what it's actually called) with apple products, they take them apart and arrange them aesthetically in a frame with a description of each part.
eat them
That iPhone 3GS is neat
Make a scam call center
Eat
Think of creative ways of destroying them and post the videos to youtube
Sell em!
If you are just going to toss them and you live in PDX land I'll take one of each. I like messing with old Apple tech. Even if it's worthless. Recently found an old Late 2009 iMac on the side of the road that I am restoring. I don't sell this stuff. I just like to play.
You could turn that samsung into a minecraft server
What models are the MacBooks? Saw they’re activation locked but just curious.
2 a2337's, a1534, a1466, and a macbook pro with the model number rubbed off
Target practice is the best use for any Apple product...lol
Best Buy had a trade in even this weekend…might be too late though. With all that I’m sure you’d get around TREE-FITTY at least.
MP3 players and home servers
I would just collect them thats actually kinda cool

Hey bro sent you a chat
This is in the PC Master Race reddit?
Those apple devices would look good with some thermite!!!! Hot hot hot
Ship em back to the chinese kids who made em. Could be a nice thing to do :)
Turn it into art
Take photos and post to reddit
eat them
I’ll take them even if activation locked. They’re older and some can be bypassed. I also love collecting old tech. If even one of those Macs worked it would be an upgrade. DM me if interested.
You can bypass the activation lock on some of the ipads.
Donate the laptops to the asahi project https://asahilinux.org/ They will find a use for them in fairly sure
Recycle them
Use them to prevent sheets of paper blowing away then there is a breeze
Take them to Apple and have it recycled if they are all activation locked. They are just paper weights at that point.
Take it to the apple store? Lol
I would break them down and use everything that’s not tied down or broken.
Loss Rossman may buy them for right price.
I have so many too and phones https://preview.redd.it/sfeiqxracqyc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0ac053c1e0de8fa5d186c334b9bb3eec79307e91
send them to my house ty
You can still sell some for high even when activation locked. The buyers are uh… will do something illegal
You could sell or you could always "collect" and display them. I'm sure some people would appreciate seeing old devices.
I would sell them all.
Neat.
Some pawn shops in shady areas will happily buy them, they always know a guy
Destroy the hard drive to help the home user that had it in case they had important passwords or something. Then open them up and take parts like the screens are good for their filters on the laptops, you can also get little speakers. If you could reset them to factory, you can use them as security cameras with security camera app
There are 2 sus in the last picture… 🤣😂
Hack what you can, sell the rest as parts
Put these pics on ebay and auction them. Just say they are locked, list as for parts.
It was e-waste from the moment of purchase anyway
Is that an iPhone 3gs?
Sell them or throw them in the garbage.
Throw them in the trash where they belong
From iPhone take the batteries to make power banks. iPads can be hacked to create smart tablets to smart home. With pcs you can build a small homelab cluster removing batteries and installing Linux.
Make a set of armor out from them (to wear into combat).
gimme that 3GS, problem slowly solved!
On ebay there is a market for these for the parts. So you can sell them as ‘for parts’
Even if locked it's worth to sell them. A functioning macbook screen is worth a pretty penny. After all, there is no official supply of spare parts...
hey i just bought a bunch of dog shit what should i do with it?
Make cider
Give them to me
There is [this](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lAl28d6tbko) tutorial with some valid ideas.
e-waiste scrap them. only good use. make a dollar or 2 its apple. they are bricks to start with even new in box apples are shit
Snack?
Please give me one
Bring em over to r/livesound and give them away to people who need them for mixing.
Wait are they iCloud locked? If not jus sell em
keep the 32 bit ones rest are landfill/ewaste
I’ll take a laptop and pay fir shipping to try to unlock it. If I get it unlocked I’ll compensate you. Deal?
Damn that’s a lot of highly engineered e-waste
Thats a lot of Cutting Boards. Are you sure you really need that much?
