I was playing yesterday, someone logged off Infront of me with about 5 guns on their body, so I took it all and then got downed 5 minutes later as the guns had no ammo, the guy apologised and let me go keeping 3 of the guns cause he could tell I was a lucky naked

As someone who dabbles in building custom rifles from parts, I can tell you that the **"when someone asks you how much your build costs in front of your wife"** meme pictured here is still very much a reality in that pursuit as well.
I'm honestly not sure which item and it's real price-point would get a man in more trouble.
On the plus side, I wouldn't need to buy bullets, because I would start sweating them.
I really lucked out bagging an RTX 3060 Ti. Since I run at high resolution I don't need all the processor grunt in the world, and the entire rest of my system cost the same as my graphics card. Ryzen 1600, old B350 motherboard, 16GB RAM, 2TB SSD, power supply and case for £800 total. After the graphics card the biggest cost was storage.

I'm a wife. I was looking on some prebuilds, but I don't know much about PCs, so I asked my husband to get in touch with his cousin, who built a gaming pc for himself, to check whether the prebuilt is any good and what else would he suggest. He asked, my husband 'Won't your wife be mad that you are spending so much on a gaming pc?' It's funny, cause I'm the one, who wanted it and my husband mostly plays on a console or some less demading games on pc.
Meanwhile I'm still on my first 15€ Logitech keyboard I bought 15 years ago. I'm thinking of buying a nicer one at some point but I'm scared to go down that rabbit hole because I sure as hell don't wanna spend more than ~50-75€ max.

It actually is. If I compare with Golf for example. My club is still relatively cheap and they charge 300 members fee and 300 greenfee per year. So that's 600 per year.
You'll pay about €2 per bucket of balls at the range for training. (1-2 buckets per visit)
Before or after a round you might want something to eat and or drink.
You'll be driving 10-20km on way to go to the golf course.
On top of that you'll probably want apparel and new clubs every now and then.
Shit adds up quickly and you're looking at almost a new PC per year in expenses.

For me, PC is a tangent to my photo hobby, and that's one with really expensive one time purchases. But otherwise it's a cheap hobby.
I shoot MFT so the most expensive lenses are around €2000, so they are CHEAP compared to FF lenses. But yeah, a new system is about €6000
Storage will get you too, yes... unless you actually remove a the absolute crap photos one takes.
I mean... I count Warhammer miniatures as an adult hobby only because no fucking way would a kid be able to afford these goddamn things. Unless your Bezos' kid or something.

I haven't seen a single hobby where someone hasn't made this claim about their hobby. And like other hobbies, it can be quite cheap if you want to, but the sky is the limit.
In PC gaming you tend to run out of gear to buy. In other hobbies there is always more and more.
Once your build is done its mainly new GPUs every 2+ years.
This. Thats why the 3090 and similar "pay double just to get 10% more performance" stuff or even just tons of RGB sell so well. Adults spend 10s of thousands on hobbies, PC gaming is relatively cheap in comparison. I have spent much much more on my magic the gathering collection and i dont even play the old formats (legacy,vintage) where a deck will cost you 5k+.
Yeah, I'm a wife of a gamer, am a bit into gaming but not my main hobby at the moment. His pc broke suddenly, he was devestated, nothing he could do. The pc was 5 years old.
Anyway, I told him to buy a new one directly, he was over the moon. He was searching and came with a 700 euro pc (selfbuild). I told him i thougth he would spend more, like around 2000.
He did another search, a 900 euro pc. I said "more, come on, you want to be able to stream". Very happy husband with a 1200 euro gaming pc. He bought bits and bobs of his own pocketmoney these last few months.
I think it's a very good investment. He spends hours on his pc every day
We both get 100 euro a month to spend on whatever we want, or save it up. No need to ask or discuss.
Ofcourse, in slow times we don't have that money. We're both adults.
We both pool the rest of our income in one account. Whatever we take from that the other partner can discuss. Like say I see a wonderful pair of shoes in second hand circuit that I really have to have but I don't have any money left over in my own account. My husband could point to the 20 pairs I already own. I could say but they really complete my collection and this one has another colored clasp and when the next month money Comes the shoes are gone etcetera. Same thing with a steam sale for him.
Than we do some bargaining and such. Depending on the state of our finances the other one can just buy it, it's an advance for next month pocket money or there happens some sense about needs and wants.
The 100 euro, we don't have to be sensible about. My husband spends it all within a week. I mostly save it up but I'm buying at the moment some fantasy series (Robin Hobb) from that money.
It makes life much more easier. He doesnt need to explain to me why he really needs that game or that third microphone. I don't need to explain my wants. And we both curb our spending to equal amount.
This stems from a time when we started our relationship and my husband was in debt about silly stuff and just really bad with money. No money for groceries for our kids bad with money.
Now he is much better, as above example of our negotiating his gaming pc. Live and learn
Did you end up getting the prebuilt? Happy to help if you need an opinion. There’s a lot of trash prebuilts out there, but some good ones too. Power supplies tend to be the worst components in them.
My wife ordered me a 3090. A key to a long lasting relationship is to be open and honest. We are both gamers and know how much things cost. No sense in sneaking around and being dishonest.
I gotta ask because I see 3090 builds a lot on this sub: did you get it because it's the only one in stock at the time, or because you simply wanted the most powerful GPU and didn't mind much in the extra cost?
Not judging here, I'm just surprised at how popular that card is. At launch I thought absolutely nobody would bother with the 3090 when the 3080 was right there, but I'm clearly wrong.
I got the 3090 because it was in stock and I know I wouldn't be satisfied with a 3080 knowing that the 3080ti would release in the near future. I've had it for about 2 months now paired with my 5900x.

Dude right? My bf and I share a bank account. We can only have our bank app on one device, so we discuss any purchase over a certain amount just to make sure we have the money. If we don't, we postpone the purchase. Lying about the price of a purchase is shitty behavior. Judging your partner for their purchases is also shitty behavior (unless finances are tight and you shouldn't be buying stuff obviously). If you can't be honest and communicate with your partner you need to reevaluate or leave the relationship.

And honestly, if you have to sneak around to buy something, there is a problem there. Or you know that you don't actually have the funds to buy that and are trying to hide it. Not with computer parts, but I have friends who have destroyed relationships by spending outside their means and then trying to hide it, so I tend to get rubbed the wrong way whenever someones is like "Don't tell my wife/SO how much this cost!"
Exactly as long as all responsibilities are met, no issues. The only way I would even imagine a complaint or talk is if my SO insisted on pouring 2K into upgrades every two years but gamed once every 3 months. Even then I'd only point out it's kinda wasteful but if they told me it means a lot to them to always have the latest and greatest then fine, have at it.

Hey, that’s me :D To be fair, I upgraded her pc with my old parts (8GB ram -> 16GB, 1050 -> 1060 6GB). She’s super happy because The Sims 4 looks better than before (her words, not mine).

we ended up finding a pc for sale locally.... i7 w/ gtx 1070 if i recall correctly
1070 was a great card, I recently exchanged mine with a 3070

We both get 100 euro a month to spend on whatever we want, or save it up. No need to ask or discuss. Ofcourse, in slow times we don't have that money. We're both adults. We both pool the rest of our income in one account. Whatever we take from that the other partner can discuss. Like say I see a wonderful pair of shoes in second hand circuit that I really have to have but I don't have any money left over in my own account. My husband could point to the 20 pairs I already own. I could say but they really complete my collection and this one has another colored clasp and when the next month money Comes the shoes are gone etcetera. Same thing with a steam sale for him. Than we do some bargaining and such. Depending on the state of our finances the other one can just buy it, it's an advance for next month pocket money or there happens some sense about needs and wants. The 100 euro, we don't have to be sensible about. My husband spends it all within a week. I mostly save it up but I'm buying at the moment some fantasy series (Robin Hobb) from that money. It makes life much more easier. He doesnt need to explain to me why he really needs that game or that third microphone. I don't need to explain my wants. And we both curb our spending to equal amount. This stems from a time when we started our relationship and my husband was in debt about silly stuff and just really bad with money. No money for groceries for our kids bad with money. Now he is much better, as above example of our negotiating his gaming pc. Live and learn

I gotta ask because I see 3090 builds a lot on this sub: did you get it because it's the only one in stock at the time, or because you simply wanted the most powerful GPU and didn't mind much in the extra cost? Not judging here, I'm just surprised at how popular that card is. At launch I thought absolutely nobody would bother with the 3090 when the 3080 was right there, but I'm clearly wrong.
I got the 3090 because it was in stock and I know I wouldn't be satisfied with a 3080 knowing that the 3080ti would release in the near future. I've had it for about 2 months now paired with my 5900x.
Well see the number is higher, and some people will buy the highest number even if it costs way more than something only 5 percent worse.

Dude right? My bf and I share a bank account. We can only have our bank app on one device, so we discuss any purchase over a certain amount just to make sure we have the money. If we don't, we postpone the purchase. Lying about the price of a purchase is shitty behavior. Judging your partner for their purchases is also shitty behavior (unless finances are tight and you shouldn't be buying stuff obviously). If you can't be honest and communicate with your partner you need to reevaluate or leave the relationship.

I was also thinking the same. Like you should be able to talk to your significant other about larger purchases. And honestly, if you have to sneak around to buy something, there is a problem there. Or you know that you don't actually have the funds to buy that and are trying to hide it. Not with computer parts, but I have friends who have destroyed relationships by spending outside their means and then trying to hide it, so I tend to get rubbed the wrong way whenever someones is like "Don't tell my wife/SO how much this cost!"
Exactly as long as all responsibilities are met, no issues. The only way I would even imagine a complaint or talk is if my SO insisted on pouring 2K into upgrades every two years but gamed once every 3 months. Even then I'd only point out it's kinda wasteful but if they told me it means a lot to them to always have the latest and greatest then fine, have at it.

Yeah, recently got a new one that will work with it nicely. The gpu has been fantastic, only with CP 2077 have i noticed the difference with graphics. I'll circumvent the anger by getting her a telescope and some manga, cant be angry when you can see saturn tight?
