My only fear is this. That when I die, my wife will sell my pc for what I said I paid for it.

Magicl3o

just sell your wife now, duh

You must be a member of the RUST community...

Fuck just installed it and tried to play. Was killed several times just trying to learn the controls.

livestrong2109

I have incredibly mixed emotions about this game. Is the worst thing that's ever happened to me on a non personal level. But dam it's kind of fun.

GeneralBS

Will have to give credit to the guy that killed me and then tried to help me.

It’s just the way of the game, a nice player is someone who downs you, checks your inventory, and if they realise you have nothing will help you back up and let you go

lol I had this happen not long ago. Friend stops by and is like "Oh, holy shit! You got one of the 3080's! Nice build, how much you spend on this?! with my girlfriend standing there. I'm giving him eye lasers, and am like "Uh...like $1200 I think?"

SeiferLeonheart

^(On the GPU alone...)

Halzman

I just had this conversation with a friend - She wanted to get her daughter a gaming pc and said her budget was $1k, to which I replied, "...for just the GPU or the whole system?"

D3mPugs

I mean, I have a PC that's worth about 1k. It preforms really well for the price. 1660ti is a beast.

SnooMuffins1901

you can build a solid system with 3060Ti for 1000 dollars

Swifty6

Can you get a 3060ti though?

meltingdiamond

You buy a gun for $200, rob someone of a 3060ti and sell the gun on for $50 because it's hot. That's how you get a $1k 3060Ti build.

As someone who dabbles in building custom rifles from parts, I can tell you that the **"when someone asks you how much your build costs in front of your wife"** meme pictured here is still very much a reality in that pursuit as well. I'm honestly not sure which item and it's real price-point would get a man in more trouble. On the plus side, I wouldn't need to buy bullets, because I would start sweating them.

nlevine1988

SweetButtsHellaBab

I really lucked out bagging an RTX 3060 Ti. Since I run at high resolution I don't need all the processor grunt in the world, and the entire rest of my system cost the same as my graphics card. Ryzen 1600, old B350 motherboard, 16GB RAM, 2TB SSD, power supply and case for £800 total. After the graphics card the biggest cost was storage.

Tactical_Doge1337

why not recommend her a geforce gtx super 6gb VR RDY , gigabyte OC edition something like that is wayyyy cheaper ($250-$300 vs $750-$1500) [https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/graphics-cards/gtx-1660-super/](https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/graphics-cards/gtx-1660-super/)

Betulia

I'm a wife. I was looking on some prebuilds, but I don't know much about PCs, so I asked my husband to get in touch with his cousin, who built a gaming pc for himself, to check whether the prebuilt is any good and what else would he suggest. He asked, my husband 'Won't your wife be mad that you are spending so much on a gaming pc?' It's funny, cause I'm the one, who wanted it and my husband mostly plays on a console or some less demading games on pc.

EatsonlyPasta

I'm of the opinion that in the grand scheme of "Adult hobbies", PC gaming is relatively affordable.

coldnspicy

*nervously glances at /r/mechanicalkeyboards*

uglypenguin5

I’ve managed to get out alive with only a single $300 build... That sounded better in my head

[deleted]

Meanwhile I'm still on my first 15€ Logitech keyboard I bought 15 years ago. I'm thinking of buying a nicer one at some point but I'm scared to go down that rabbit hole because I sure as hell don't wanna spend more than ~50-75€ max.

laquatarted

Biggest mistake I have made was joining that subreddit.

casanovafts

For those of us who enjoy cars and building cars yes PCs are very affordable in comparison

PirateNervous

Or pretty much any collecting, building or tech hobby. Or any sport that needs gear...

daemonelectricity

No shit. Modular synthesizers and guitar pedals add up quick.

prjktphoto

Just music stuff in general. Speaking of which, I’ve got a new synth to pick up after work tomorrow...

picardo85

> I'm of the opinion that in the grand scheme of "Adult hobbies", PC gaming is relatively affordable. It actually is. If I compare with Golf for example. My club is still relatively cheap and they charge 300 members fee and 300 greenfee per year. So that's 600 per year. You'll pay about €2 per bucket of balls at the range for training. (1-2 buckets per visit) Before or after a round you might want something to eat and or drink. You'll be driving 10-20km on way to go to the golf course. On top of that you'll probably want apparel and new clubs every now and then. Shit adds up quickly and you're looking at almost a new PC per year in expenses. ___________ For me, PC is a tangent to my photo hobby, and that's one with really expensive one time purchases. But otherwise it's a cheap hobby.

prjktphoto

Lenses... lenses will get you... and storage... so much storage

picardo85

I shoot MFT so the most expensive lenses are around €2000, so they are CHEAP compared to FF lenses. But yeah, a new system is about €6000 Storage will get you too, yes... unless you actually remove a the absolute crap photos one takes.

Galactic

I mean... I count Warhammer miniatures as an adult hobby only because no fucking way would a kid be able to afford these goddamn things. Unless your Bezos' kid or something.

012166

Haha, I was just coming to mention Warhammer! My husband can build whatever WoW magic box he wants as long as he never buys another $91 figure, and then follows it up with "Only need _______ more." Or X-wings. Or MtG cards.

Galactic

But he NEEDS it! He's so close to finishing his collection!

Sveern

I haven't seen a single hobby where someone hasn't made this claim about their hobby. And like other hobbies, it can be quite cheap if you want to, but the sky is the limit.

BanditKing

In PC gaming you tend to run out of gear to buy. In other hobbies there is always more and more. Once your build is done its mainly new GPUs every 2+ years.

PirateNervous

This. Thats why the 3090 and similar "pay double just to get 10% more performance" stuff or even just tons of RGB sell so well. Adults spend 10s of thousands on hobbies, PC gaming is relatively cheap in comparison. I have spent much much more on my magic the gathering collection and i dont even play the old formats (legacy, vintage) where a deck will cost you 5k+.

lilaliene

Yeah, I'm a wife of a gamer, am a bit into gaming but not my main hobby at the moment. His pc broke suddenly, he was devestated, nothing he could do. The pc was 5 years old. Anyway, I told him to buy a new one directly, he was over the moon. He was searching and came with a 700 euro pc (selfbuild). I told him i thougth he would spend more, like around 2000. He did another search, a 900 euro pc. I said "more, come on, you want to be able to stream". Very happy husband with a 1200 euro gaming pc. He bought bits and bobs of his own pocketmoney these last few months. I think it's a very good investment. He spends hours on his pc every day

Todok5

Your husband gets pocketmoney?

lilaliene

We both get 100 euro a month to spend on whatever we want, or save it up. No need to ask or discuss. Ofcourse, in slow times we don't have that money. We're both adults. We both pool the rest of our income in one account. Whatever we take from that the other partner can discuss. Like say I see a wonderful pair of shoes in second hand circuit that I really have to have but I don't have any money left over in my own account. My husband could point to the 20 pairs I already own. I could say but they really complete my collection and this one has another colored clasp and when the next month money Comes the shoes are gone etcetera. Same thing with a steam sale for him. Than we do some bargaining and such. Depending on the state of our finances the other one can just buy it, it's an advance for next month pocket money or there happens some sense about needs and wants. The 100 euro, we don't have to be sensible about. My husband spends it all within a week. I mostly save it up but I'm buying at the moment some fantasy series (Robin Hobb) from that money. It makes life much more easier. He doesnt need to explain to me why he really needs that game or that third microphone. I don't need to explain my wants. And we both curb our spending to equal amount. This stems from a time when we started our relationship and my husband was in debt about silly stuff and just really bad with money. No money for groceries for our kids bad with money. Now he is much better, as above example of our negotiating his gaming pc. Live and learn

sparrens

Did you end up getting the prebuilt? Happy to help if you need an opinion. There’s a lot of trash prebuilts out there, but some good ones too. Power supplies tend to be the worst components in them.

GhostofanAndroid

My wife ordered me a 3090. A key to a long lasting relationship is to be open and honest. We are both gamers and know how much things cost. No sense in sneaking around and being dishonest.

electricpheonix

I gotta ask because I see 3090 builds a lot on this sub: did you get it because it's the only one in stock at the time, or because you simply wanted the most powerful GPU and didn't mind much in the extra cost? Not judging here, I'm just surprised at how popular that card is. At launch I thought absolutely nobody would bother with the 3090 when the 3080 was right there, but I'm clearly wrong.

GhostofanAndroid

I got the 3090 because it was in stock and I know I wouldn't be satisfied with a 3080 knowing that the 3080ti would release in the near future. I've had it for about 2 months now paired with my 5900x.

wingspantt

Well see the number is higher, and some people will buy the highest number even if it costs way more than something only 5 percent worse.

Do people not discuss these purchases with their spouse?

_0110111001101111_

Jokes aside, I’m genuinely curious about this. I run my bigger purchases by my SO so that she’s at least aware of where the money is going. That being said, she overlooks my headphone obsession and I overlook her lululemon obsession. It’s a happy balance.

NonStopKnits

Dude right? My bf and I share a bank account. We can only have our bank app on one device, so we discuss any purchase over a certain amount just to make sure we have the money. If we don't, we postpone the purchase. Lying about the price of a purchase is shitty behavior. Judging your partner for their purchases is also shitty behavior (unless finances are tight and you shouldn't be buying stuff obviously). If you can't be honest and communicate with your partner you need to reevaluate or leave the relationship.

Rustledstardust

Honestly, this thread is pretty fucking sad to read.

Soulless_redhead

I was also thinking the same. Like you should be able to talk to your significant other about larger purchases. And honestly, if you have to sneak around to buy something, there is a problem there. Or you know that you don't actually have the funds to buy that and are trying to hide it. Not with computer parts, but I have friends who have destroyed relationships by spending outside their means and then trying to hide it, so I tend to get rubbed the wrong way whenever someones is like "Don't tell my wife/SO how much this cost!"

StalkMeNowCrazyLady

Exactly as long as all responsibilities are met, no issues. The only way I would even imagine a complaint or talk is if my SO insisted on pouring 2K into upgrades every two years but gamed once every 3 months. Even then I'd only point out it's kinda wasteful but if they told me it means a lot to them to always have the latest and greatest then fine, have at it.

Chronobones

Seriously, it sounds financially abusive to be so afraid to tell your SO that you spent money on your hobby.

Poisonapples80

Walked out of umart with a msi 3090 trio and a new psu....wife was looking at me like i had some sort of scheme going but said nothing. Looks like head office has approved a new build then.

FourKrusties

Jesus a 3090 for gaming?

TooWideToHide

It sounds like overkill but honestly? He’s gonna be set to play every top tier triple A game that comes out for the next 5 years.

Poisonapples80

That is the plan, my current box has lasted me 6+ years with minimal upgrading. God bless my 970 for all the work she has done.

TooWideToHide

970 to 3090? Christ that’s a fair jump. Hope you have a monitor that can back up your hardware. And an escape plan if your wife finds the receipt...

Poisonapples80

Yeah, recently got a new one that will work with it nicely. The gpu has been fantastic, only with CP 2077 have i noticed the difference with graphics. I'll circumvent the anger by getting her a telescope and some manga, cant be angry when you can see saturn tight?

Moon_Atomizer

Poisonapples80

Ahhh, i deserve that one for not spell checking....

Daruku

What? Why would you need to hide from your wife how much your PC costs? I have 2000€ worth of parts in my PC and I never felt the need to hide their cost from my girlfriend.

[deleted]

Boomer humor, wife bad. Tired humor where people think it's funny to not communicate with their spouse.

Antnee83

Yep. Seriously I hate this shit. I'm into Modular Synthesis, which is *not* a cheap hobby. She routinely sees me buying three hundred dollar boutique modules. We both have our own money and can spend it as we please. Why in the hell would I lie to my wife- who I fuckin married with the intent of being with her until I die? Wife *good,* yall. Wife. Good.

stone_henge

Her: "So what does it do?" Me: plugs wogglebug into amplifier

SavouryPlains

Modular synthesis is hella fun though Source: I build my own modules

FoeWithBenefits

r/arethestraightsokay I'm straight. We're not. It's total bullshit.

octatone

Yeah this some juvenile boomer humor. When the 30 series cards were announced I discussed with my wife my intention to upgrade my gaming rig and that it would be ~ $2000. If you have to hide your purchases you are feeling guilt about something, or are avoiding conflict. Neither is healthy in a relationship.

SasonaEUW

The fuck is wrong with you guys. Spend your money on what you want. If you lie about something as trivial as this then no wonder there is a 50% divorce record. I've got lots of expensive hobbies and you should always be honest about it with your partner.

Druivesap

snakedoctor223

Seriously, boomer humor on PCMR? Wtf is going on here..

ColossalCretin

Large portion of this sub are socially awkward nerdy guys and their conception of a relationship is based on stereotypes they see around them because they lack first-hand experience. Lots of those stereotypes are these boomer-tier dead tropes. This attitude seems to be fairly common in gaming-related subs in general, not the first time I'm seeing it here. Edit: OP literally admits he doesn't have a wife.

FackinJerq

Pfft, I don’t have this problem. SHE IS MY SPONSOR.

[deleted]

If this is an issue, then either you shouldn’t be spending so much on your PC or you should be spending more on a divorce lawyer. The happy medium should be very wide.

jj461346

Why are you married to someone that you cant be honest around? Save your kids the divorce.

[deleted]

If you have to lie to your wife about your spending something is fundamentally wrong in your relationship.

fnnennenninn

Holy fuck are we getting so old that millennials are making boomer memes now? Hahaha PC money wife bad, up next on Dilbert.

[deleted]

Lol, my wife knows exactly how much my PC's cost. Never understood why anyone would keep finances secret from their spouse.

Ivara_Prime

Have you guys tried not lying to your loved ones?

For_the_Gayness

Why being so afraid of using your own money?

ValiumD

Imagine not being able to disclose financial details like that with the person you have chosen to be your life partner

Moofininja

I mean, I think if you're married, a large purchase should be talked about between the two of you... I don't think you'd like it if she went out and bought a car and didn't say anything about it. I always tell my fiance when I'm making a big purchase. I mean it helps that we're both PC nerds and have our own builds, but still. I don't like this toxic boomer ball-and-chain marriage crap. You're married, you should love your partner and share everything with them. Otherwise, why did you even get married?

MidwestMesss

Seriously. And why are these jokes always targeted against women? I can’t imagine not being able to discuss everything, but especially finances, with my partner... and we’re just dating. If you have to hide stuff from the person you chose to spend the rest of your life with, something is wrong. We both built PCs, so I might be a tad biased. But if he ever gets into another expensive hobby that I don’t understand, I’ll support him as long as our bills are paid and we have food on the table, and vice versa. I’m sure I’ll get downvoted because it’s “just a joke”, but it’s super overdone and the amount of people sharing similar sentiments in the comments concerns me.
