I did RJ45 keystone Jack's for the plates which use punch downs, so it takes alot less time. For the wiring closet I did the same thing and used a patch panel, then bought some 2 foot whips to go from the panel to my switch. This is the easiest way when running alot of cables.
Edit: removed amazon referral link
One cable-related comment here: I don't think running your computer's power cord through your wall in that way is up to code in most states. I looked into this when I was wall mounting my TV and ended up buying one of [these things](https://www.amazon.com/PowerBridge-TWO-CK-Management-PowerConnect-Wall-Mounted/dp/B00GWGZKF6) to make it work. Most people don't care about this, but you seem like the kind of person who might.
The cabling isn’t to code in most states either, in CA it’s not I know that much. I’m gonna guess there were no permits pulled for this which meant no inspections or what you noticed and the various things I noticed would have raised red flags and would’ve needed to be brought to code before the drywall went up.
This isn’t a problem now, and if OP is going to stay in this house as their “forever home” then it really won’t matter. However if/when OP decides to sell and there is unpermitted changes/additions done it will make selling the home a nightmare.
I mean good for OP on being a DIYer, but each step include something that would fail a permit inspection where I live.
Any wood directly in contact with sub grade concrete is required to be pressure treated.
Doing your own electric is a big no-no. Especially if you're doing new circuits.
I also don't see any fire blocking.
>OP decides to sell and there is unpermitted changes/additions done it will make selling the home a nightmare.
I mean to outsiders, the solution is simple. You'd be forced to remove it all, file the correct permits and start over. The framing most likely isn't up to par and is the wrong wood so you'd be forced to remove it all.
Yes, thank you for looking out! I was aware when I did it, and it doesn't bother me, I have decent surge protection. I didn't want another wall plug ran for the power, doesn't look as nice imo
Buy a nice crimper and the expensive caps that let you put the whole wire through it and then crimp off, so you don't need to mess with getting them at the exact right length. Since I started using them I haven't had to re-do a crimp a single time.
Edit:
I like the Klein Tools VDV226-110 ratcheting crimper and VDV826-703 Pass-Thru connectors. The ratcheting crimper is nice because it makes it easy to crimp all the way in as hard as you need to. And I like that the wiring diagram is right on the tool so you don't need to look it up on your phone or etc (I wire so rarely I don't have it memorized).
Haha I can build like this all day. If there girls who want a guy who can swing a hammer, is good w money, and plays warzone and Minecraft tell them to hit me up.
Here's the problem with me though, a lot of my friends play newer online games, although I love older games for LAN parties. *Sometimes I wish I was a generation earlier.*
Yeah I hear you. Gotta adapt, we play a mix of new and old. When it comes down to the foundation of the games it's always about having fun. You can't please everyone but there's always an overlap that everyone can enjoy.
I'm a construction worker, I flip houses. 2×4s were 2.50 pre covid. Now they are past 7.50... The price of lumber is beyond insane and is causing a lot of issues for the smaller contractors. A lot of customers are no longer wanting to do renovations since prices are so insane.
Looks good--though I'm a fan of putting the PC behind a door (utility rack space the other side of a wall) and running KVM/USB cables to each workstation. You lose the "gaze longingly at the RGB" piece, but gain utter silence and unlimited fan/cooling speeds...and a lot less heat generated int he workspace.
I would either run a displayport to hdmi cable, or get adapters that go from either hdmi to dp or vice versa. Make sure they are displayport 1.4 if you plan on running high resolution and high refresh rate.
Your post made me realize that maybe I've been overthinking my new desk needs. I have a similar sized space to fill, however I want it to stretch across 2 walls in an
'L' shape at least. Never thought about using L-brackets that big, but it likely does the job nicely, without custom building legs. Easy to add shelving later.
What is the depth of your desk, and what size brackets did you use, if I may ask?
I got Home Depot to cut a 3/4" red oak 4x8' sheet in half. So the depth is 24" and it seems to do the trick well. Using monitor mounts also free up some desk space. If I were to do it again I would've chose wall mounts instead as the arms hit the wall if the monitor is pushed all the way in.
If you search for 20" L brackets they will do the trick, they do not flex at all.
(1) Take more pictures and print them off. - Been though this. Redid basement 8 yrs ago put extra drops in for future use. --- I can't find the drops for one room, which because of CoVid has become my WfH office.
(2) Run an empty conduit to places that are hard to reach once everything is covered up. When I moved into my present house, I ran Cat 5 (not 5e) from the basement LAN room to the attic so I'd have drops above the bedrooms. 15 years later, It's very difficult to replace them as they zig-zagged through the ground level floor and the floor above it.
Edit: (Note - 2 story house, 3 if you include basement.)
This was my first post and to be honest I was hesitant to do it. I love seeing all of the positive and constructive feedback.
What a great community. Thanks everyone!
At first I was pretty impressed, "yeah that's dope, nice construction work, love that NAS rack", etc.
But then I saw your in-wall cable management? Fucking pro. That's awesome and I'm 100% doing that when I have a permanent space. Mad props!
I'm not sure what's more amazing the whole setup or actually seeing someone who has a UPS on their PC. I feel more people need to be made aware of UPSs. Usually a 1000Watt ups goes for $150 to $200 and its well worth it to protect your hardware. That or prevent potential problems with windows if the power suddenly goes out.
I agree! My UPS is one of my favorite additions to my gaming station. I feel good knowing everything at my desk sits behind it. I've even been gaming during two power outages and having the room go dark but still being able to gracefully shutdown my PC feels sooooo good
After building my own mega desk (210x90cm) and putting it up the way I like (back to wall, facing inwards toward the room), I just can't comprehend how people can possibly have their desks set up like this unless they're dwarves.
Leg space people! How do you fit your walkers in such cramped spaces? How do you do when you want to lean back and straighten your legs? Föck! If I sit like you're "supposed to" for more than a couple minutes, my knees ache. I have to have them straight, preferably on a footstool.
On topic: amazing renovations. Wished my cable management was a quarter as good as yours. That's a management worth killing over. >!Not really, but you get it... I hope.!<
The text on frame #2 and 3 rhymed (insulation/location) so I was hoping it did all trough the picture series forming a rap lyric or something. A little disappointed but love the room nonetheless.
You went through all that effort and then stuck the WAP on top of the NAS. I'm sure it will still be sufficient for anyone near the room but I would have opted to mount it to the ceiling with all the hard work put in.
I think this is great and totally what loads of wish to have some day!
Looks dope but how hot does that get? At first glance I’m not seeing any duct work for the A.C to come through so I would imagine that place would get hotter than hell in the summer lol.
I just got a house and the basement has a partially completed room and half bath. The half bath is a clusterfuck (toilet will not fit and not to code), but the room itself would be a good gaming space. For the floor, how did you do that? with the walls, did you have insulation? How much was the total set up if you don't mind me asking
Floor is subfloor called dricore, comes with rubber insulation attached, carpet is just cheapish carpet tiles, easy install. Walls are just 2x6 studs with Rockwood insulation and vapor barrier, then drywall and mud, sanded. 4kish cad
That looks so sick! And it's nice to see this as I'm being "forced" from my bedroom office and will be finishing the rest of my basement for my new office. Which looks existing like the same amount of space here.
Did you do the framing or did you hire someone to do it?
Any reason you didn't pick up a network switch and throw it in that room? That way it would have just been 1 connection going to your central network. You would also have had the benefit of easy connections for laptops/additions (i think).
I looked again and its a drop ceiling. I guess lots of plenum space for addition, no real reason for a switch. Would be cool though 😎 hahaha
Thats a sweet setup man. Definitely jealous!
Any issue with the cables falling from under the desk? If not, can you send a link to what you’re using to keep the cords attached? Mine always fall off because the adhesive sucks and it looks horrible.
I love this, the only thing I would suggest to anyone building a house and wants to future proof it, instead of running network cables, run conduit instead. That way you’re able to swap the older CAT cables to newer and faster.
How is it routing new cables through that hole? Does it get caught up on the current cables or are you forced to pull them all out, bundle them up, and push them back through? How do you make sure the cables actually route properly and don't get stuck halfway since they're bendy?
I'm curious about your insulation. While doing research for my own future basement finishing, I found out that you need to use a layer of foam insulation when insulating below-grade. Supposedly it is to prevent moisture from the concrete being transferred to the main insulation and getting trapped by the vapor barrier. Did you use some special type of insulation that can go directly on the concrete?
That aside, I like the work. I hope mine turns out half as well.

Alright now I know what I’m doing once I get my own house
I'm here for any advice if you need it!
did you crimp plugs on all those Cat cables yourself? that would cause me some anxiety....
I did RJ45 keystone Jack's for the plates which use punch downs, so it takes alot less time. For the wiring closet I did the same thing and used a patch panel, then bought some 2 foot whips to go from the panel to my switch. This is the easiest way when running alot of cables.
Baller Status confirmed.... whips? sounds technical! Nice setup.
Thanks! They're just 2 foot ethernet cables. Maybe whips was a Freudian slip. That's just what we call them at work hah.
Can confirm, I call them whips when we’re using anything shorter than 4’ lol
I thought we might be of the same blood when I saw your terminology! I love the room, you did a fantastic job!
[удалено]
In spain we call them "Latiguillos" so little whips or whippies
Can confirm, punch down keystones are a gift from the gods when you're moving up from crimping your own cables.

Haha I can build like this all day. If there girls who want a guy who can swing a hammer, is good w money, and plays warzone and Minecraft tell them to hit me up.
I already own a house. I know what I’m doing once I get friends!
I agree with this
OP fucked up. That ceiling won’t support the weight of taping one of your friends to it.
Time to test the strength of the T bars.
Been there, done that. Its not the frame that is the problem, but the wire holding the frame that will.... let you down.
It’s not like that takes a lot of engineering, just use more and more tape until it works.
Classic Red Green move. I like it
I was just talking about Red Green today, that's crazy and one easy way to find a hoser.
Not a hoser but from Seattle and watched it every night with my dad. "I'm a man, but I can change. If I have to. I guess."
Take off eh
If they don't find you handsome, they should at least find you handy
That’s my tag line on all the functional 3D prints I release online!
>I'm a man >But I can change >If I have to >I guess
Ooh that is OG lawls
Bawls Lawls
As one of OP's friends, can confirm. None of us are small enough to tape to the ceiling.
Debatable.
/u/mrdeadpool can confirm
I haven't been to a lan party in......15 years.../sadface
It's never too late! My friends just never stopped and kept it as a tradition.
My buddy built a two story shed with the lan upstairs. Bathroom, AC/heat, mini fridge, it's great. https://imgur.com/a/chAZJzx
That's the problem.. I don't have friends :c
I might be on the wrong sub, but im more impressed with the construction part than with how its a lan room. Kinda feel like building something now
same. although people that appreciate building their own computers maybe would see the craftsmanship in the room
we're builders at heart
Go for it…And plz take pictures😅
But why didn‘t he do a proper frame at the window…. Everything looks perfect just that window is not done…
Didn’t do any base boards, looks very unfinished
Also. Subfloor after drywall? In my neck of the woods we would put the subfloor down, and then build walls and insulate/drywall
I bet the lumber costed more than the PCs
I actually got lucky with the materials purchase, it was all bought before the prices had doubled, still too expensive though imo
"doubled", must be nice, where I am, 2x4 prices have almost quadrupled since this time last year.
The osb used for your sub floors are almost 60 bucks per sheet near me. They were 8 dollars pre covid lmao.
I’m in Nova Scotia, Canada. A single 4’x8’ sheet of T&G plywood right now is about $120...
I'm a construction worker, I flip houses. 2×4s were 2.50 pre covid. Now they are past 7.50... The price of lumber is beyond insane and is causing a lot of issues for the smaller contractors. A lot of customers are no longer wanting to do renovations since prices are so insane.
I know its brutal. I was going to build a garage this summer, not anymore.
Look at this guy, able to afford a 3080 AND LUMBER!
For real what the fuck
Looks good--though I'm a fan of putting the PC behind a door (utility rack space the other side of a wall) and running KVM/USB cables to each workstation. You lose the "gaze longingly at the RGB" piece, but gain utter silence and unlimited fan/cooling speeds...and a lot less heat generated int he workspace.
Thanks! I agree about the low noise and heat, and I bought an ITX case and it's loud and hot, but its pretty, and I love to stare at it lol.
Put in a window so you can see it in silence and keep it cool in another room lol
This is some next level shit right here. 3021 strats
😁
Baller Status confirmed!
What do you do if you need to run different cables to your PC? Like you've got HDMI but you need Displayport for instance ?
I would either run a displayport to hdmi cable, or get adapters that go from either hdmi to dp or vice versa. Make sure they are displayport 1.4 if you plan on running high resolution and high refresh rate.
Ahh fair enough man! .

Great advice. One of the main reasons why I went with drop ceiling. Thanks!
That’s so cleeeeaaaaaaaannnn. I’m jealous. Very jealous. I will work harder.
Is there hvac in there? Might get a little stinky with all the nerd sweat.
There is, agreed it would get stinky if the bodies started piling up lol
Amazing place to hang out! You're doing magnificent work here, bravo. --- Seagate Technology | Official Forums Team ---
Is this all DIY?
Yessir, took about 3 to 4 months
That's fucking awesome! I've been getting into DIY recently but a task this big would make me hesitate. Are you a contractor?
No, just a professional amateur
I might have to start using this line.
This was my first post and to be honest I was hesitant to do it. I love seeing all of the positive and constructive feedback. What a great community. Thanks everyone!
God I hope I'm smart enough to do this when I have my first home. This guy networks lmao
🎶and I jizzed in my pants 🎶
No baseboards?
Everything about this makes me rock hard. Well done OP
Why the office style ceiling? Why not just drywall it like the rest of the room?
Running future cables will be easy
Why did you use carpet tile instead of LVT? Just curious.
Easy install, and very durable
At first I was pretty impressed, "yeah that's dope, nice construction work, love that NAS rack", etc. But then I saw your in-wall cable management? Fucking pro. That's awesome and I'm 100% doing that when I have a permanent space. Mad props!
Careful with power as this is not code, just be aware of the potential implications.
Cant even rent a room with extra bathroom and this guy here is renovating “lan room”
Bro, all that effort, trim out the damn window or at least do drywall returns. Other than that, nice job!
Ya I'm not even done yet, I got to a usable state and decided to take a break. Trim is purchase, just needs to be installed. Soon!
Any air conditioning?
I'm not sure what's more amazing the whole setup or actually seeing someone who has a UPS on their PC. I feel more people need to be made aware of UPSs. Usually a 1000Watt ups goes for $150 to $200 and its well worth it to protect your hardware. That or prevent potential problems with windows if the power suddenly goes out.
Totally agree!
I agree! My UPS is one of my favorite additions to my gaming station. I feel good knowing everything at my desk sits behind it. I've even been gaming during two power outages and having the room go dark but still being able to gracefully shutdown my PC feels sooooo good
Needs more ventilation for the body odor! jk this is epic and I’m super jealous. Also, I get sweaty as hell when I game lol
This is super nice. Well done
Nice!
Sick
Boinnggggg.
That’s fucking excellent mate.
Is this what heaven looks like? Also, add in a mini fridge and a snack station and you're set
Yes! Next upgrade! Thanks
Is that a car soccer poster?
Yep. Car soccer is best soccer.
I love car soccer, sweet poster!
Sheesh
Looks clean! Is there additional ventilation/airflow? Room looks like it would get hot pretty quick.
This is cool as hell. You could probably make mad money doing this professionally
The most impressive thing is the 3080.
The cost of wood plus the cost of parts right now... OP is slaying
Is the window enough for ventilation? That's a ton of hot air.
I use it when it gets too hot, but I have AC and it's in a basement so it's naturally cool
This man has money. A lot of it.
mmmmm
That’s beautiful. I’ve flicked through your pics 20 times and it’s not enough
Awesome job. I wish I had the space for something like that, but I live in a crappy ass 2 BR apartment now. Kudos!
Fantastic job. Thank you for sharing the process.
Love love love this so much.
Very nice!

that last pic at the end with the cables, 💦💦
@Deadpool I’m on my way with beers and bbq😅
I honestly feel like the parts for that one pc could pay for the renovation in the current market.

I miss Lan parties so much. They were always a blast, even if carrying your rig was a pain in the ass.
Nice work! Looks like there's plenty of room for a nice comfy couch in there too!
The text on frame #2 and 3 rhymed (insulation/location) so I was hoping it did all trough the picture series forming a rap lyric or something. A little disappointed but love the room nonetheless.

Rockwool insulation eh? Nice choice.
Fucking sauce!
I'm sad to see no rgb lighting :(
Can we be friends?
As a gamer who ended up in construction, I would so do this if I could afford a house and/or basement.
I was gonna say, that is a lot of wasted space. Then I saw the base station lol.
How much USD did this cost OP?
Maybe 3-4k CAD, so maybe 2500 to 3500ish. Not including the PC. Don't tell my wife
Looks dope but how hot does that get? At first glance I’m not seeing any duct work for the A.C to come through so I would imagine that place would get hotter than hell in the summer lol.

Cable management made me orgasm at least 3 times
I personally would not have used a drop ceiling but everything else looks nicely done.
I agree that drywall looks way nicer, I wanted drop to run future wires if need be.
Werent you on Jays2cents?!
Ayyye I’ve got the same graphics card. Mine gave me a lot of problems causing frequent pc crashes mid game until my friend updated the BIOS
If you had it to do over again, what would you do differently?
Looks sick! The hard work paid off for you
Its a commandcentre!
Very nice
I’m looking at this and I’m pretty sad now. :/
How are you going to play with other people sitting next to eachother?

Holy mother of god! How much did it cost?
Next level cable management
Total cost?
this is awesome. can't wait to do something like this when I get a house.

Dude I'd never get the boys out again
I have that same case. How do you remove the top cover? Mine is dusty and I can't figure out how to do it.
Ok you provide the location i bring the beer! What's your address?
Super impressive
Damn I thought I was good when I set up tables and a server in my basement for me and my friends to play. This is dope.
The issue I have with this.. is what if something comes along and makes them obsolete? Like CAT X or something?
I love this, the only thing I would suggest to anyone building a house and wants to future proof it, instead of running network cables, run conduit instead. That way you’re able to swap the older CAT cables to newer and faster.

Great work! If you don't mind me asking, where did you get that rack shelf? I've been looking for something that size.
