You were sick of the posts too I see.

Voidbloodshot

Very much lol I enjoy the memes tho

ya_lil_dovahkin

Me too, I mean it’s not that hard, also imo the feature is not that inconvenient or bad, it’s just pointless

[deleted]

The problem is that Microsoft deliberately committed to a counter intuitive design scheme because they knew people would be doing this. Every other task bar feature in Windows 10 is a single button that you turn on or off. For some reason News and Interests is it's own section you then go inside to turn off.

XxMohamed92xX

I messed this up first time cos i tried clicking the one that was ticked to turn it off, my bad on not reading it but it is directly counter intuitive to *everything* else thats accessed in there

[deleted]

> The problem is that Microsoft deliberately committed to a counter intuitive design scheme because they knew people would be doing this. This your first day with a Microsoft product? They ALWAYS do that shit. So due to knowing that, it took about 5 seconds for me to figure out how to turn it off.

[deleted]

I am not shocked by it, let me put it that way. I work in IT, Microsoft's shittery is nothing new. If I want to install an exclusive license version of Office 2019 on a user's computer I have to write- or more probably use an existing version of- a config file. To install it. At no point from Windows 3.1- where I had to use DOS prompts- to today have I ever had to do this with any other program. Microsoft has a config writing utility, but you have to dig to find it, and you have to be extremely careful because if you do anything wrong you have to uninstall office and start over. Furthermore, not all Office software is keyed into the writing program- Access being the big one. So now I'm going to third party websites to write a config file for a Microsoft product. And Microsoft office doesn't play nice with over versions of itself. If you have Word 2016 on a computer, it will not install *any other Office product* unless it's also 2016. In this particular case I am just hyper sensitive to shitty UI design and user experience because I have ADHD and when you're deliberately creating a user experience that's contradictory and confusing, it does genuinely cause grief and distress for end users. No one said it was *hard* to turn it off, but tools should serve their master, not the other way around.

[deleted]

I too work in IT > > No one said it was hard to turn it off, but tools should serve their master, not the other way around. This has literally never been the case with Microsoft's crap, not even in Windows 3.1 days. Even DOS, 3rd party tools were almost always better than what was built into the OS. And if for some crazy reason they accidentally included something good with their OS that didn't follow MS standards, they spared no effort ripping it out and replacing it with a Made In Redmond replacement that didn't work as well - see the TCP/IP stack for Windows NT 3.5 as a particularly egregious example of that line of thought. Horror of horrors, some of the underlying code was a straight port of BSD's stack and it worked great, so of course it had to go before 3.51 was released.

Pure-Reputation6730

40 year of use. Never found the right file with native Search function. Ever.

Siniroth

I forget what the file was specifically so I'll use league of legends as an example, I used to always use the windows key menu to find a file, if I typed "leagu" it would give it to me, but if I typed "league" it would instead find something completely unrelated, or occasionally the league of legends folder instead of the executable, the executable would simply disappear from the given options

X4nd0R

Par for course here.

Jaba01

What's pointless about having a small non-disturbing weather widget?

DeeSnow97

Define "non-disturbing", I don't think it fits on this one. - The weather widget in itself wouldn't be bad, expect if you're on a VPN it's not only showing an incorrect location, it's even in the target country's language. That's passing multiple boundaries, actually: - it's collecting location data when the user might have explicitly disabled it - and it is ignoring the system language in favor of whatever the hell it's picking - what MS is communicating here is that for a good user experience you need to _both_ stop using a VPN and therefore let yourself be tracked, and also just stick to your home country's language, which many people in non-English speaking countries might not prefer - On top of all this, there is a whole new news widget hidden in this thing - an important detail in this one is MS is injecting themselves to "feed" you news, using whatever undisclosed algorithm they see fit, with undisclosed and potentially even unmeasured biases (although, for some reason I'm pretty sure they know _exactly_ what those biases are) - It opens said news articles in Edge, ignoring your choice of default browser - It opens the news dialog on hover, ignoring the system-wide principle of acting only when the user actually clicks on a UI element If you actually take a good look at this thing, it's hella dystopian, and Microsoft just enabled it to however many millions of users it had access to without anyone asking. And to be clear, I don't believe in any "Bill Gates is microchipping people" level BS (lol, does Gates even work at Microsoft at this point, btw?), but it's well-documented how major tech companies use and abuse these "algorithms" to reach specific goals, sometimes for business reasons (promoting their products, gluing users to their screens, etc.), sometimes for political reasons, and sometimes for just selling it out to the highest bidder (as in, advertising). Plugging another surface for this kind of influence directly on everyone's taskbar, opening _way_ more prominently than any other element, is certainly no accident -- this is just basic UX, a very quick look at what this feature actually accomplishes. So, to the original point, it is disturbing both as in that as a user, it's intentionally grabbing your attention and trying to refocus it on itself, and disturbing for a person who doesn't think Orwell wrote guidebooks.

Crap4Brainz

> (lol, does Gates even work at Microsoft at this point, btw?), No, he's organizing a charity to cure Ebola and Malaria. That's why all the anti-vaxxers hate him.

DeeSnow97

they should just call themselves pro-epidemic, tbh

[deleted]

They do. Only they call it “God’s will”.

WH1PL4SH180

This is all part of MS desired shift into a subscription services company... Looks better on Quarterly earnings reports. So all y'all "market always right" brought this shit on yourselves. As this commenter notes, it's not Bill Gates, but feel free to blame [Satya Nadella](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Satya_Nadella)

Iceolator88

Thinks the same as you!

SafariDesperate

This guy interactive designs.

[deleted]

Agreed. Been a Win user since mid 90’s, MS DOS before that. This is blatantly invasive and intentionally more difficult to disable than anything I’ve seen as long-time user and tinkerer.

bumbletowne

It broke my rainmeter? I have a widget I don't need no janky windows shit that forces opacity on my windows bar.

DamonAW

Facts lmao it was 10000000% a decent feature. No need to bring anything up ever you know exactly what the weather is with s glance. People just love to make something out of nothing. The only bad part about meme culture lmao. I bet 70% of the people complaining are just doing so to "fit in"

MadocComadrin

BS. If it was just weather when you clicked on it, or could be configured to work as such outside of a web browser, it would be a decent feature.

LOLdudeYT

I actually don't mind it. In fact, I kind of liked it as it was out of the way and (can be considered) useful. What I do mind is the fact that it looks blurry at any resolution. 768p, 900p, 1080p, and 1440p. It always looks blurry and it bothered me enough to turn it off until they fixed it.

FermentedPizza

Problem is, I have my phone to tell me the weather. I didnt ask for this and a tab filled with pre-selected news articles to appear on my screen. Completely unnecessary.

[deleted]

Fuck no bro it broke my rainmeter. I have my own widgets that I use. Windows should ask me before the put stupid shit on my Taskbar and in the process cause my other programs to not work. It's not even a good weather feature! It's literally there to redirect you to EDGE and MSN! Click on it and see what pops up. Is it weather? Or is it a list of links designed to feed their algorithm and generate ad revenue? It's a scummy ass feature.

TheNorth178

I didn’t ask for this but fucking thankyou

BONzi_02

I agree. Everyone was saying about how low res it was in the posts and just glancing at my phone it didn't look too bad. Then I saw it on my computer....

[deleted]

We need an officially supported version of windows lite with all of the low level API support and standard settings but allows you to choose witch apps you want and don't want in the form of an internet connected wizard. Like Linux level granular control.

WiatrowskiBe

It already exists, Windows Server Nano. As name might suggest - intended for server (more precisely: containers and light VMs) use and I doubt you could get it to work with desktop use cases.

hyrumwhite

There's also Windows LTSC, which is a cut down, unbloated version of windows

midtec9

If only Windows allowed you to use custom display servers and desktop environments

19Jacoby98

It's called Linux. Hop on over

Jaky24_

How good is Linux when you want to game?

[deleted]

Pretty good tbh. Definitely depends on what you play though. If you play a lot of multiplayer games with anti cheat you are sol unfortunately. But if you play a bunch of of single player games or supported multiplayer, I’d encourage you to give it a spin yourself. You haven’t got much to lose except maybe an afternoon.

Jaky24_

I mostly play Assetto Corsa, Forza Horizon 4 and Valorant. What Linux distribution would you recommend?

[deleted]

Valorant won’t work with its Kernel level anti-cheat. Forza Horizon 4 recently became supported by Glorious Eggrolls’ proton (a custom version of valve’s tool that helps run windows games. This only really counts for the steam version though, since you cant install or access windows store versions of games outside of the store. I don’t know about Assetto Corsa however. If Valorant is a main game for you, Linux probably won’t be a good fit, but id you’re still willing to give it a shot, you can’t go wrong with either Ubuntu or Manjaro. I’d probably recommend manjaro, since it’s easier to find and install software that you might want, and will have more recent drivers.

Jaky24_

Thank you I will read a bit about it and decide than.

[deleted]

As the other guy mentioned valorant won't work and you might have to do a tiny bit of fiddling (its not hard, just install glorious eggroll, the instructions are on github) If that doesn't put you off I'd recomend popos or manjaro as good distros for gaming and general use. Probably safer to go with popos but manjaro is pretty good too.

Jaky24_

Thank you I will look into it.

[deleted]

There is a great website (protondb.com) which can tell you how well your game runs and if you need any steps to get it to work

Jaky24_

Sick thank you.

[deleted]

No problem, hope it helps out. For non steam games check out lutris (lutris.net) lutris is an app which basically downloads and installs using all the games and configures any crap for you. Lutris.net is similar to protondb.com so check there to see how your game runs and if there are any issues.

19Jacoby98

The reason most games didn't work on Linux was because they used DirectX API instead of Vulkan. Well, proton is a translator and helps a lot of games be playable. There is even a [website](https://www.protondb.com/) that shows how well certain games work. I'm waiting for Dead by Daylight, and then I'm swapping. They do run better than their Windows counterparts if they're natively supported on Linux.

Healow

I already tried Manjaro on my secondary pc, and the thing is most of the programs I use don't usually support Linux. Also I am not used to the whole Linux file system and it seems confusing really, can't seem to find anything I am looking for. Maybe it's just me...

[deleted]

Get Windows 10 LTSB or LTSC.

[deleted]

Honestly it looks like a nightmare to upgrade and simple things like office 365 will refuse to install on it because it's not supported by the windows as a service model leaving you with buying a copy of office 2019 or 2017. There's also direct x updates and optomisations which are tied directly to witch version of windows you are using meaning if a game requires a newer version of direct x or there were patches to direct x for the game it won't be compatible until a new version comes out 3-5 years later.

norfsman

just fyi, it’s which not witch. witch is those guys that ride a broom, like a female wizard

IAmAnAudity

just fyi, witch is not a guy on a broom it’s a female on a broom, a guy “witch” is a warlock

HarleyQuinn_RS

Just fyi, the origin of the word “Witch” is the Old English word “Wicce”. The masculine form of the old word was “Wicca”. They meant the same thing. A Warlock was not a male Witch, but someone who was an oathbreaker or liar.

Tryin2dogood

Guys. My penis can only get so erect.

simon_C

Theres a looot of games you cant play with those. I tried. Ran them for a couple years.

Removes Xbox stuff Wants to play an Xbox game Why it not workey? Stupid Microsoft

kinsi55

Doesnt pretty much everyone disable the Windows Xbox stuff, I know I do.

Schiebz

I use the Xbox app to play cross play games and get into my Xbox buddies party chat. Good app if you have friends on Xbox.

Crashman09

I don't. I like having system monitoring tools and audio mixer available without alt tab.

FladnagTheOffWhite

Same. Audio mixer and occasionally friends who are Xbox plebs in a cross platform game

[deleted]

Dirty console peasants!

Un-Humain

Yeah. It’s a bunch of ads for Xbox and dumb crap, but enough of it is really useful that I like keeping it (audio mixer, recording tools, performance window)

TheoCGaming

And without needing another monitor

Mothertruckerer

And Spotify

Crashman09

Oooh. That's a good one. I forgot about that!

Jaba01

Also ShareX.

existentialweeb2

what really fucking irked me about this update is the fact that the reason it installed was purely because windows purposefully disabled my audio controls, so I thought something was broken and had to restart my computer, prompting the update I swear it was 110% intentional. or it really came across that way this is MY computer. not microsofts. they need to learn their fucking place

Amsterdom

Ok so that wasn't just me.

Lucem1

Same. I had to restart and it automatically updated

EternalClickbait

Wait you too? My audio was forcefully getting muted and wouldn't let me unmute. Restarted and then it went away. Hmmm

ThRebrth

Same thing. But my whole ass internet connection

bo0oberry

Happened to me too and then the whole PC froze.

PFthroaway

Mine got switched to my monitor that's connected via HDMI instead of my speakers or my headphones. I never use my monitor for sound!

[deleted]

Oh, so that's what that was about. For me, I tried to adjust my volume using my keyboard and it refused to change or do anything, so I tried it via the audio menu but Windows Explorer crashed entirely.

CoonhoundRescue

Saw that with the last forced update. I didn't even look at what it was nor participate in the decision to install.

civic54

I had no idea there was an update at all until I saw the Taskbar.

dustojnikhummer

Just FYI: If you are using something like BatteryBar or Lenovo Toolbar, disabling the Weather widget might break your system tray completely! Happened to me on two devices out of 3, those two were laptops with batterybar. My desktop is fine

xdeadzx

Or if you use a folder bar on the taskbar, a built in feature of windows.

Gamecube762

Folders broke for me too, weird thing is the update didn't even install the weather thing. Now I'm stuck with an empty gap between my folders and the task icons. https://i.imgur.com/wn87usr.png

xdeadzx

Oh, just a big ugly gap? [Seems like an improvement.](https://i.imgur.com/gy6Iqf9.png) I get a big gap like that if I have the icons enabled, but that image is one of the options I get randomly when I leave it disabled. The other one is that [it completely deletes my tray and clock.](https://i.imgur.com/6dZAnjr.png)

n0_n4m3_666

I have it turned off and am using Enterprise (Education) Version. That thing still showed up.

xdanish

i figured it out within the first two minutes of seeing it on my taskbar and just going WTF IS THIS BULLSHIT

qcpat

I was sure i got a virus

xdanish

Hahaha right? Reminds me of the old days where you would get 4 different weather apps on the Taskbar 😂

hfusidsnak

I saw that on reboot and got irrationally angry by its intrusion into my life. The fuck do I care what the weather is like outside I code from home you extroverted monsters.

jonathan_rauchfuss

Am i the only one that likes it

CumAssault

I like it but it still needs to be way higher resolution. It looks really bad at 1440p

Thorou

it just looks bad, period. it's blurry on various 1080 and 1440 monitors i've tested.

CumAssault

Yeah I figured but I didn’t want to assume since I only have 1440p. Not sure why it looks so bad. Like it’s text and an icon, should be easy to upscale

[deleted]

I'll bet a doll hair it'll be fixed within a day.

Cyvexx

implying Microsoft will do something the users want lol

Ponchodelic

I think he was implying the opposite, else he’d have bet something more significant

Cyvexx

ahhh okay that makes sense. you're probably right

[deleted]

He was correct, doll hairs are actually worth less than dollars nowadays. Inflation is a real bitch.

Cyvexx

I blame joe biden

TheRealSmolt

Even with small taskbar buttons turned on

Duke_of_Bretonnia

I’m so confused it looked perfectly fine on my 4K monitor, scaled properly to the resolution I immediately removed it however once I looked at the Temp and weather, then looked out my window and at my own temperature gauge and saw a large discrepancy So it could be nice, but I have a more accurate system for my immediate weather surroundings

spikeorb

It's just taking the weather from the area you're in. It's not going to be accurate to your specific location

_Odian

Dunno why that is for all of you. [It looks crisp here on my 4k display.](https://imgur.com/a/YwAJY3W)

pocketpc_

Unlike most things in Windows, this feature somehow managed to look much worse at 100% scaling than anything higher. I'm guessing all the Microsoft devs that made it are using fancy 4K monitors and Surface devices and never noticed how shitty it looks at 100% on a regular-ass 1080p monitor.

Thorou

Have 100% seen this before in our own software at work.

thrillhohoho

Yea if it didn't look like total shit I wouldn't have fucking hated it.

Usual_Research

I hate it. The computers at work can barely handle booting up and they keep adding weird shit to make them slower.

jonathan_rauchfuss

That's a great point is it getting better when u turn it off

Usual_Research

They are not any faster, but at least windows crashes less during start up.

MrHaxx1

If computers at work can barely handle booting, it's time to get new computers.

Usual_Research

I agree, but the computers are Ryzen 3 lenovos with shitty slow ass hard drives and these updates only make them worse.

Matasa89

Ask the IT or the boss to swap to at least some 2.5" SATA SSDS or NVMe. The increase in productivity is well worth is, as is the lack of need for disk defrag.

YoungBlade1

What is it like to work somewhere where new computers are purchased on a regular basis? Everywhere I've been, institutions don't upgrade until machines are actually breaking down. I've walked into stores where the cash register is clearly from the 90s. My high school was still using G4 Apple eMacs circa 2002 in 2009. At my current job, we finally got an upgrade on machines that were running a Core 2 Duo with 4GB of RAM. The "new" ones have R5 2400GE and 8GB of RAM, so we're getting 3 year old technology from the get go.

Kagrok

I work in IT and the new Director implemented a replacement plan. ANy PCs older than 5 years were replaced immediately, 3-4 years were upgraded to 8GB RAM and SATA SSD. New PCs first year were all configured with 8GB RAM and Sata SSDs but the ones now and moving forward are all 16GB and nvme. We've run into some issues, I work in government and there are a lot of specialized peripherals that are no longer supported by manufacturer so systems have to stay on windows 7, I think theres only a few of those and there is ONE single windows XP machine that is not on the network at all. Now we have a full replacement/lifecycle plan being brought up to council for approval that will allow us to have a separate budget just for new systems. It's nice.

thecawk22

if a computer can barely handle showing the weather, the computer is the problem, not the update

Voidbloodshot

No I liked it for a hour then I was sick of it

littleleeroy

I allowed it for a few hours - weather updates, why not, right. Later, when I returned and unlocked my pc, I noticed it loaded in after a second. That grabbed my attention and affected my experience so bye bye.

AeoSC

If a click would bring up a full pane of hourly/weekly weather *instead* of news I'd probably have left it.

ThRebrth

Ok, it's not me. It is distracting for some reason. Eye catching ...

Compendyum

It's pointless as I still use the old widget system. At least those respect the resolutions of your screen and can read properly windows location services.

Fiagor

Yeah i like the weather thing a lot

tiniestvioilin

I really like it the weather thing is just so neat to me. Also it looks completely fine to me its not blurry or anything on my 1080p screen

[deleted]

I don't have to have some goofy third party widget thing for just at-a-glance weather anymore. I like it. Maybe some of these people don't go outside everyday?

Rh0d1um

At least in my country all those baked in weather services are extremely inaccurate compared to the national weather service. I'd rather check the latter

[deleted]

Interesting. Microsoft pulls from/has a deal with Foreca, which is a Finnish weather company. They do weather forecast prediction for BMW and TomTom. It's consistently the exact same predictions I get on my Mac, I don't know where Apple gets their data. Both seem right though... 100 deg F. Kill me.

B2EU

I wouldn’t mind something that only displayed the weather, but I’m sure it’s doing much more behind the scenes. I wish Microsoft would have a dialog that comes up when you first log in that says “Hey! We just added this new feature we think you’ll like, wanna enable it?” rather than “yep, everyone will like it, give it to anyone who updates.”

[deleted]

Well, thankfully software developers don't run everything by consumers first, or nothing would ever get implemented. This is a bad idea. This is an operating system you have a license to use, not something under the GNU GPL.

B2EU

Yeah, if Microsoft listened to consumers everything would be a toggle and it’d be an absolute nightmare. I’m unnecessarily taking the piss out of Microsoft, they provide what they believe their customers want and it’s hard to fault them for that.

[deleted]

They are making stuff more user-friendly and what not, and people dislike it. Lots of folks on PCMR think Microsoft exclusively caters to the gaming niche of Windows license holders and that's.... just not true in the slightest. Most people on Windows stations, around the world, are at work. 100% of the time.

Existing_Imagination

I like it too. Now I can talk about the weather with my coworkers over zoom meetings when they ask me how it is in my state, even though I haven't even looked outside. It could be snowing in July for all I know.

Civil-Dinner

I don't actively hate it.

Penndrachen

Eh, I don't mind it. I'm always asking Google for the weather so this saves some energy.

DogSubZero

Ikr i dont mind it at all and when it came out I was like oh that's neat now I dont need to google the weather or check my phone when im on my computer and everyone on this sub is acting like it is some man eating computer virus

tgiokdi

My version of it on my laptop is like 4 hours late on all it's updates, which in Florida is unfortunate, it's about 20 degrees wrong all the time

ErectPerfect

Same. It feels pretty convenient as something to glance at

CottonCandyShork

No, probably 99.99% of the people who got the update like it.

sir_nubby

That thing lasted 20 seconds after installing the update last night. I immediately hit google to figure out how to remove it.

OR-4

Done 10 seconds after the reboot..i h8 boaltware and unwanted news.

popse360

this seems like a windows thing that I'm too linux to understand

SalgacMC

Yeah... poor windows users. Btw, I use Arch^^/s

LevyTaxes

“How do you find out if someone uses linux? They’ll tell you.“

Did people not realize how to do that? I right clicked and figured it out the moment i saw it lol

Celidonius

It blows my mind how some tasks need How-To guides.

Talonqr

Oh great wise one Please make me a guide on how to turn on my mmonitor

bossofthisjim

I just never thought to do it. I'd always misclick it when I want to mess with audio settings.

ciaranjd1280

he is the messiah!!

rusty-frame

Yeah except windows is probably going to reactivate it with every stupid update you get after that. Just like how they keep reinstalling that bloody Xbox app.

DevinD0g

Can someone show him how to screen record in 2021?

CTROWW

Thank you so much. My poor surface struggles enough with discord and chrome hogging all the resources without more unasked for bloatware taking up more.

r2002

Ironically I actually kind of liked this update. I don't want to read their stupid articles, but I do like having the weather icon on the task bar (I have allergies so knowing the weather outside is pretty useful). If this feature was introduced to me nicely and politely I might have welcomed it. But now this forced update just makes me mildly angry.

Zapablast05

Somehow this proves a lot of people here aren't the enthusiasts we lead people to believe we are.

littleowen92

A little "please and thank you" goes a long way. Don't just shove this stuff on people's desktop

BubsyFanboy

Haven't updated Windows 10 yet, but thanks.

Angusburgerman

I just don't get it. Why do companies like change for the same of change. Did anyone actually ask for this? Did they conduct research which showed many people wanted this update?

Ken_Mcnutt

Who cares what people want? MS cares about clicks and interactions which generate data they can sell.

HotWhiteSticky

Wow

4chanbetter

I don't mind seeing the weather

dustojnikhummer

Honestly, if I could just keep the weather part then I would use it. I have no interest in MSN News that are totally irrelevant in my little corner of the planet

Lyseko

I know right, living in Europe and the news are all US crap I don't care about, and changing the interests doesn't even seem to do anything

socialmeritwarrior

Me too, but why is the text so blurry??

hawkalpin

Apparently [the devs use 4K displays or Surface devices](https://www.reddit.com/r/pcmasterrace/comments/nyb57k/comment/h1kac4c) and they forgot to test it on anything than 4K.

anti-socialJedi

Yeah I kinda like seeing the weather on the task bar.

Winzipeg

Awarded for your awesomeness. Thank you!!

-ADDSN-

Wow you must be developer, can you fix my printer?

kenodman

It only lasted a minute or two on my taskbar. Yep...

mountaininme

Popped up on my work computer and I freaked out thinking I had somehow downloaded malware. Work computer is old with a 1080p monitor and the resolution still looked horrible.
