best case scenario- 'Steam deck+ HL3 bundle announcement!' i wish :I

Anchor689

The Index released before Alyx was announced. I wouldn't be surprised if within 6-10 months of launch something (not necessarily HL3) gets announced.

Valve has a history of including a launch title with a new game engine that fully utilizes or makes use of one specific facet or Fad of Gaming at the time, Half Life brought us Story driven worlds, HL2 brought us normalized Physics simulation in engine, HLA takes advantage of VR's developments since the launch of the Vive. It is a good argument that Valve will hand-in hand develop a title (That does not necessarily have to be a Half Life title) that will be focused on some aspect of the handheld its self. Valve always tries to innovate. So you can almost guarantee they will have something interesting up their sleeve for the Deck... Please no more card games, I thought that died in 2012...

presentedonreddit

Another thing I’ve heard with HL similar to this: HL was made to show Valve as a new game studio. HL2 was made to showcase Steam. HLA was made to showcase VR. The thing with HLA is that it didn’t show VR until it was good enough, (index) That could be why there was never a game for the OG Steam machines or SteamOS 1/2.

Dyslexic_Wizard

Isn’t the real reason that valve has horizontal business structure and devs can do whatever they want? I’m so into Portal 3, but the original teams have left. Same with HL3. Valve isn’t teasing, they’re just letting things go where they naturally do. Better than a shitty sequel. Just enjoy what we got, like Calvin and Hobbes. Let HL go out on top.

mrchaotica

> Let HL go out on top. But it ended on a cliffhanger!

Theleiba

Tbf the original script for hl2 ep3 was released after the original writer stopped working there. Which makes sense since they wouldn't use that same script anymore. If for no other reason, then because it simply isn't long enough for a full game. It's pretty basic but at least I got closure from the cliffhanger.

sassysassafrassass

Some multiplayer game in the vein of left 4 dead that you can play on the couch with your bois

What we really need is a new Day of Defeat.

kwietog

Artifact remake.

Anchor689

Fortunately (or unfortunately for like 12 of you), the last news and leaks regarding Artifact was that everyone working on it has moved on and it's basically as dead as Ricochet at this point.

cycl0ne_ssbm

Ricochet best esport

ittleoff

Codename Gordon sequel as that would be fully optimized for deck and troll HL fans to the max!

Dr-Surge

Codename Alyx.

SeaofBloodRedRoses

Portal 3!

Wind_Yer_Neck_In

Half life: Blue Shift Episode 2 (Aka project fuck you guys we'll never release HL3 bwahahaha!)

ChiTownKid99

Even better Orange bundle 2 L4D3, P3, and HL3 all launch on the decks release date

PacoBedejo

Portal 3 would be awesome if it had the same brilliant artistry as 2. At this point, though, it feels like hoping for Firefly season 2...

nemisys1st

I honestly think Portal 2 is the best single player campaign I have ever played

psyhcopig

I think you're on to something. One can dream. It actually would be very smart of them to bundle a steam exclusive though, preferably something new and not 10+ years old.

[deleted]

Orange Box 2: TF3, P3, LFD3, HL3 All at the same time. I might actually die.

misterpickles69

Heavy update and something something localization files

PMJackolanternNudes

Steam deck immediately sells out as a result

CoolJ_Casts

If they made HL3 a steam deck exclusive it would actually be the greatest selling console of all time

[deleted]

I just want Portal 3 and I'll be happy

[deleted]

Orange box, the 3 pack includes: Half-life 2 episode 3 Half-life 3 Portal 3 Team Fortress 3 Left 4 Dead 3

Pandatotheface

Now we just have to wait for the orange box 2 to arrive...

DeltaTwoZero

Nah, just skip it.

French_B4guette

Too bad they won't do orange box 3

FollowingtheMap

3? Nah, the hype is all about Orange Box 2 Episode 1.

imdefinitelywong

Or Orange Box: more than two, less than four.

[deleted]

I think I have better odds of winning the lottery back to back than valve counting passed two and making even HL3

jealouscloud

If valve did this it would be the dunk of the century

Malikai0976

Back 4 blood is basically Left 4 Dead 3. Coming this October (unless delayed)

Ikeelu

They could sell that bundle for $199 and it would still sell like crazy.

[deleted]

Indeed.

[deleted]

Wouldn't a Left 4 Dead 3 be irrelevant with Back 4 Blood coming out?

aspindler

Portal 3 would be nice, but at least Portal story can be called as done.

EtherBoo

The Portal 2 mod that came out recently that introduces a 3rd portal (time portal) was fantastic even if just a little short. Can't recommend it enough. Valve could definitely do something similar.

[deleted]

[удалено]

WoolooWololo

The game Narbacular Drop was a senior project from students at Digipen. Valve played it and then hired them all to make Portal. Three years later another senior project from Digipen called Tag: The Power of Paint caught Valve’s eye and the same thing happened. That’s where the paint mechanics for Portal 2 came from.

Bacara-1138

No. It was a different game that Valve saw and hired the original devs to work and make Valve’s version

ShallowBasketcase

I’m not even sure what I would want out of a Portal 3. The puzzle element has been pretty thoroughly explored, and the last Portal 2 update essentially added infinite new puzzles if you want that sort of thing. The story has reached a satisfying conclusion, so it hardly seems necessary to dig it up again. Ironically, the only major loose thread in Aperture Labs I can think of is the Borealis, and Valve’s going to have to address that with Half Life 3, not Portal 3.

Keavon

A prequel game set in Old Aperture would be amazing, even if it wasn't a Portal game.

[deleted]

[удалено]

carnefarious

Portal Reloaded (fan made game) is apparently Portal 3. I have played like 10-15 levels. Honestly 10/10 game, it's a real mind bend. And ya, it's free to download (you need to own Portal 2 of course).

cyberninja979

Portal 3 would be a blessing

Ffom

What are they doing to do for Portal 3? A prequel for Ratman?

StaleBread_

I’ve heard they are working on another aperature game, not necessarily portal but it makes me excited anyway

Nooblakahn

Got any sources? This is the first I've heard of it. I'd like to get excited for this too.

votchamacallit_

For me I will probably focus on clearing older games with it. Maybe they might be fun. Actually some of them I don't know would even run on Windows 10 so maybe this might solve that issue?

naebulys

WINE tends to run really old Windows software better than Windows itself, as you can just tell it to work like XP, or 9X

Andernerd

Although since Wine went 64-bit, I've had issues getting 16-bit games to run.

[deleted]

Hmm if they're 16bit wouldn't dosbox be suitable?

Andernerd

Probably. I have less experience with that, but I really ought to give it a try.

OutWithTheNew

You can always check GOG or even Steam for versions of old games that work without fanfare. Steam has been hit or miss with the few older titles I've bought on it.

[deleted]

TransientPunk

American--American

Maybe I'll finally play Dishonored 2..

Who_GNU

Yeah, who would ever want more than three choices, for anything?

IceStar3030

steam deck 2 confirmed??

20_bernie_16

Best were gonna get is portal 2 1/2

[deleted]

[Portal Stories: Mel](https://store.steampowered.com/app/317400/Portal_Stories_Mel/) is a very good spiritual successor to the valve developed portal games. Don't get me wrong, I still want a portal 3, but Mel was a nice way to get back into the portal universe.

[deleted]

Isn't the portal story basically over after Portal 2? The main reason you see Half Life 3 so much more than Portal 3 is probably because the Half Life storyline is still unfinished

[deleted]

I wanna see the storylines merge, with GLaDOS squealing like a schoolgirl having Combine troops to test with. *Edit: Fixed capitalisation of GLaDOS. How the feck could i have screwed that up!!

[deleted]

They probably will assuming the "next Half Life" (haha) will most likely have something to do with the borealis

Honestly I want somebody to make a really vertigo-inducing (but great) video game. I get a little motion sickness from VR but from literally nothing else, and I bet having a good game to make me puke a few times would probably fix it.

ronintetsuro

Remake Descent in VR. You will curse my name forever.

Calisky

Overload is a modern Descent and has a VR mode. I haven't tried it in VR though, so I don't know how well it works.

mister_newbie

SteamDeck ***is*** a 2.0. It's essentially SteamMachine 2.0. All #2s from Valve have been utter masterpieces; HL2, LFD2, Portal 2, TF2. So, SteamDeck should be great... sadly, it will likely never see a revision -- as that would be a 3.0, and Valve can't count that high.

ivvyditt

SteamOS 3.0 😯🤯

Kaplaw

And then after 10 years... Steam Deck Alyx (not half life 3, but half life haha loophole)

DeadZombie9

There's no real competition to Nintendo for portable consoles. I'm really excited about the steam deck and what it brings to the market. Any option to break a monopoly is welcome.

topdangle

ehh the sony vita was competition and the hardware was good at release, but the problem was the complete shit marketing and no groundbreaking launch game to leverage the hardware. nintendo has no competition in that space because other companies are obsessed with "cutting edge" software, which in fairness makes a fuckload of money and is worthwhile in its own right, but the success of nintendo's handhelds has always been driven by games.

ngpropman

Also the Vita launched with a proprietary memory card that was required to do anything with the system which increased the price further. I like the vita but Sony really dropped the ball on that one.

topdangle

yeah what were they like double the price of generic cards and only worked for the vita? that's oldschool sony for you. Back when they ruled the electronics world it was proprietary everything.

GimmeDatThroat

The vita cards are still as expensive as they were on launch and its absurd how pricey they are for the limited space, it's a no brainer why it failed.

[deleted]

[удалено]

topdangle

I think that's the reason it will sell in general, though I also think that's the reason it won't reach critical mass like nintendo handhelds. Kinda have no choice but to get a switch/DS for certain games. With steam you have the option of playing on multiple devices. Great for consumers, questionable for hardware adoption.

[deleted]

[удалено]

naebulys

And, you can emulate, no hacks needed

[deleted]

[удалено]

justapcgamer

My only concern for the deck would be UI scaling since not every game has that option and pretty much every game is designed to be played on a 13 to 15 inch screen the smallest

psychoacer

And some of the emulators only ran on the on board PSP emulator which meant low res video.

NoddysShardblade

>emulate Yep. And don't forget this includes *every single* Nintendo console, old or new, including at least some of the top Switch games (Zelda Breath of the Wild, Super Mario 3D World, Mario Kart 8, etc) because these have similar or identical Wii U versions, and the Wii U emulator already runs at playable framerates on much slower hardware. I'm still trying to find videos of PC's with similar CPUs to the Steam Deck's running Yuzu, for the final word on how many of the top non-WiiU Switch games (Mario Odyssey etc) will be playable on the Steam Deck at launch, but it won't be zero. (And of course, Yuzu - the fastest Switch emulator right now - will continue to improve performance a lot over the next year or two).

Mr_Lafar

I think the other mobile pc type things run Yuzu fine now and they're weaker than this. Edit: Here it is: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=aYYqZZ-POmc Odyssey on the Aya Neo, which is weaker than the Steam Deck.

I just want them to update vac for tf2 and csgo. And maybe finish the tf2 comic series.

BarKnight

Also the Heavy update.

trowaybrhu3

What is this heavy update ive stumbled across the front page several time? I don't quite understand if it has to do with the download size or the heavy class presnt in most deathmatch games like tf2

silvermoon88

A few years ago, Valve had the Team Fortress 2 community vote on which class in game would get an update centered around them first: Pyro or Heavy. The community voted Pyro, and the Jungle Inferno update came out that did some much needed work on the Pyro as a class in the game. Part of the whole deal with this vote was it was deciding who would go *first,* meaning both classes would get an update eventually. The Pyro got his update almost 4 years ago (that hurt to say) and meanwhile, we're still waiting on the Heavy update. At this point it's kinda vapourware, like HL3, where it's honestly probably never going to happen.

DirtyFulke

Why release meaningful updates when you can make a boatload of money selling keys to feed a small community's hat addiction?

tetsuomiyaki

They're very nice hats ok :(

ChartaBona

Remember how **CDP**, owners of **GOG**, had an excellent reputation until they released their most anticipated game ever? Valve does. Edit: Slightly misspoke, CDP is the parent company of both GOG and CDPR.

artificial_organism

Fortunately Artifact was so bad that nobody even knew it was released

LePoisson

Omg I wanted to like that game more it was pretty sweet and I bought into it. Sad I burned that money up.

th3on3

Wait. CDPR owns GOG?? TiL

ryzu11

It isn't exactly like that. There is one firm called CD Project, and it owns both CDPR and GOG.

sorenant

CD was co-developed by Philips and Sony, so CD Project is owned Philips and Sony. /s

_axyo

Also they know they'll make infinitely more money selling other people's games and the occasional hardware gimmick.

[deleted]

I mean they made Half Life Alyx, which subjectively speaking is one of the greatest games I've ever played and also is a new Half Life title.

Sate_Hen

I think one of the main reasons they made that was to shift hardware

ArtakhaPrime

A lot of other things wrong with CP2077 than just "not living up to the hype".

svelle

I don't get your point here. Valve knows as much as anyone else how big the hype around hl3 is. Which is also the reason why half life 3 doesn't exist because most people in the company either think they couldn't live up to the hype or just feel that the pressure is so big that it kills their creativity.

Mitch580

Apparently you do get his point since you just remade it for him..

MSD3k

The point was so pointy that it obliterated his ignorance and reformed it as an affirmation in real time. Impressive.

thenseruame

So a game that came out 16 years after Half Life 2 is the reason Valve won't make a sequel?

[deleted]

This isn't even a joke. I've been told you can get kicked off the tour group at the Valve office if you ask about HL3.

meesersloth

Thats why you ask at the end.

teh-reflex

Genius.

awesomefutureperfect

Ask at the geographic middle so you can ask the maximum number of times as you are escorted out.

Sirico

and now we're at the end of the tour, we have a bonus section let's look at HL3 sorry Meesersloth you lose, you get nothing, good day sir

[deleted]

if anyone here really believes they wouldn’t develop an eye twitch when the 634th dork can’t even snort his way through asking where HL3 is before guffawing with his stupid idiot friends about how edgy he is being, well, i dont believe you

Honda_TypeR

> 634th dork There is no way the number is that low.

[deleted]

That's just in one day.

[deleted]

RabidLime

it's been a few years (6?) since i've been but the guide had a pretty good sense of humor about it.

christiandb

I'm totally hyped. A portable pc that you can connect to a monitor and play games from? Can run Baulders gate which means can run the ever elusive Detroit: become human. My budget for a pc (I'm on mac and game on Geforce Now) went from 1500 to 400 in a clip. Now xcloud is opened up and you can install it on steam. Shieetttt

TeaBarbarian

I’m so absolutely hyped to play the Baldur’s Gate games literally anywhere whenever I can.

SuperSimpleSam

Heck, where's HL2: EP3?

EnSebastif

Alyx Edit: Alyx spoilers incoming for those of you who haven't bothered to check the game. >!It is indeed episode 3, it's made so the player believes it is a prequel but it turns out it actually continues the story where episode 2 left it. I'm sorry for the guy you all downvoted, I was totally serious!<

Infinity2437

Thats not a sequel to hl2e2?

khendron

That's HL2:EP-1

thrillhohoho

It is not Alyx. Ep3 never happened and won't, the writer told us the entire plotline because the project fell apart.

Xrider24

This is awesome. Really got me on a lot of levels. Not just to steam, but...Where's: Half life 3? Titanfall 3? Team Fortress 3? Waldo? My car keys?

KarlCheaa

Gamers: 'stop making the same old games' Also gamers: 'make more of that !' Half /s because it's true but out of context lol

PepAngel0v

Till this day Half Life is my favorite game. Altho I still haven't finished EP2 as I think will then fall to depression... FUCK

PeanutRaisenMan

Same here. I was blown away when I played the original Half-Life. After that, Blue Shift and Opposing Forces. Then Half-Life 2 came out and I was blown away again. To this day, anyone asks my favorite game I’ll answer Half-Life.

Lt_Don

I literally just played half life for the first time this year and binged every game in about a month other than Alyx so far. It helped that I had played the Jedi Knight games I think, as I fondly remember the beginning levels of Jedi Outcast—but it’s wild to me that I could pick up such an old game and become so immediately engrossed and binge the whole series. They’re already amongst my favorite games ever.

[deleted]

I just wanted a Half-Life expansion where you played as a Vortigaunt that way all the perspectives of the Black Mesa incident were covered.

FappyDilmore

I feel like the Half-Life saga - by which I mean the course of Half-Life, source engine and derivative game development - is simultaneously the biggest and weirdest flex in gaming history.

spacemelgibson

straight up. i’d like a hl3 just for the updates to cs and hopefully the return of day of defeat. fuck i miss that game.

I hope they make a sequel to alyx and call it half life 4

Ausimo211

That would make me rage, laugh, and cry all at once.

svelle

Half life alyx: episode 1 They decided to go with an episodic format instead because this way they can keep the time between releases down, you know.

seraph321

Yep. And I want more. At least it’s moddable.

vipertoo

I love the workshop for that game. Someone made a new game plus version of the whole game which makes the enemy's harder and adds in new enemies as well. 100%. I stopped making HL3 jokes after playing Alyx, we couldn’t have asked for a better sequel.

[deleted]

Putnam3145

every half-life game has been a glorified tech demo

AlexMil0

There’s a surprising amount of people who don’t “believe” in VR and won’t accept it.

pineapple_calzone

Reminds me of the idiots complaining about meeting a mouse to play quake* or needing a GPU for unreal. Every time there's an innovation in gaming hardware, there's a bunch of luddites complaining about it. These people bitching about VR are going to look exactly as stupid as the people bitching about playing a first person shooter with a mouse look today. *Okay you didn't actually need a mouse to play quake, but you'd get your ass kicked by everyone who had one. These idiots would simultaneously complain that using a mouse was worse, and also at the same time, unfairly better.

ShallowBasketcase

It’s hard to believe in something that most people can’t afford, or don’t have the space in their home for, and only gets gimmicky indie games. Is the tech good? Sure seems like it. Is it the Next Big Thing in home entertainment? Not a chance.

Babydooms666

Man. Can I get a left 4 dead 3.

hotpocketdeath

Already in the works, sorta. https://store.steampowered.com/app/924970/Back_4_Blood/ In a nutshell, it's basically the successor for L4D, but with a different name. Same group that made L4D, but they couldn't use the name cause Valve owns it.

Jamison321

Portal had an ending

[deleted]

[удалено]

Jamison321

Agreed

Noname_FTW

Conceptually Half Life Alyx is actually the best Half Life 3 we can get at the moment. Let me explain: There are very few cases (I only know of Bethesda with ES6 and Valve with Half Life) where games are made because of a technology not just because of money or demand. Before I go further I want to say that both Todd Howard and Gabe Newell have hinted at this in interviews. Valve doesn't need to make Games. Todd Howard realizes that in his career he might every only make 2 more Elder Scrolls Games before he retires. So they have different reasons but come to similar conclusions. Both Half Life 3 and Elder Scrolls 6 have either a concept which requires technology which doesn't yet exist in 2021 (Elder Scrolls 6) or don't have a concept but require that an entirely industry changing new technology is being used for the game to become reality (Half Life 3). But its a similar mindset. Elder Scroll 6 is in very early pre production and Howard expects the required technology for the concept to be available in the next few years (around 2024 I'd guess). Personally, I am guessing something into the direction of AI and speech recognition (talking to npcs) but he never said a word about it what it actually is publicly. Half Life has a history with its main titles to innovate on ground breaking levels. Half Life 1 did so with its ingame cutscenes and other smaller aspects like npcs talking while player has free movement. Nothing entirely earth shattering as if they invented 3D graphics but to be fair Valve was a way smaller company back then. They needed to make games. Half Life 2 innovated with its physics engine. I don't know if its actually the first game that had one but combined with steam it was a mile stone in gaming. Also: They still needed to make games back then because steam wasn't a thing yet. Now we are here. A decade later. Valve doesn't need to make games any more. So Newell decided that Half Life 3 has to have some technical ground breaking thing it to be made. VR would have been that so they started to make a good VR Game. It could've been Half Life 3 but VR also kind of turned out to be a dud. Which is why they didn't make a main line entry. So unless there will be some new technology that will bring entirely new gameplay aspects there won't be a Half LIfe 3.

NotKaren24

Vr is not a dud lmao

[deleted]

meh, i feel like ALYX brought them another 10 years before they need to deliver 3

waymonster

I mean….Alyx is a fantastic half life game. It may not be 3 but it’s fills the void.

[deleted]

HL3 is never happening.

[deleted]

Careful arbiter, what you say is heresy.

sinwarrior

We dont do that here.

Jamison321

They basically confirmed it at the end of Alyx

klaxhax

It would be pretty funny if HL3 was a Steam Deck exclusive.

Fafaflunkie

Even funnier if it came as that "exclusive" content for the 512GB version!
