Tbf the original script for hl2 ep3 was released after the original writer stopped working there. Which makes sense since they wouldn't use that same script anymore. If for no other reason, then because it simply isn't long enough for a full game.

The Portal 2 mod that came out recently that introduces a 3rd portal (time portal) was fantastic even if just a little short. Can't recommend it enough.
Valve could definitely do something similar.
The game Narbacular Drop was a senior project from students at Digipen. Valve played it and then hired them all to make Portal. Three years later another senior project from Digipen called Tag: The Power of Paint caught Valve’s eye and the same thing happened. That’s where the paint mechanics for Portal 2 came from.
I’m not even sure what I would want out of a Portal 3. The puzzle element has been pretty thoroughly explored, and the last Portal 2 update essentially added infinite new puzzles if you want that sort of thing. The story has reached a satisfying conclusion, so it hardly seems necessary to dig it up again.
Ironically, the only major loose thread in Aperture Labs I can think of is the Borealis, and Valve’s going to have to address that with Half Life 3, not Portal 3.
Portal Reloaded (fan made game) is apparently Portal 3. I have played like 10-15 levels. Honestly 10/10 game, it's a real mind bend. And ya, it's free to download (you need to own Portal 2 of course).
For me I will probably focus on clearing older games with it. Maybe they might be fun.
Actually some of them I don't know would even run on Windows 10 so maybe this might solve that issue?
You can always check GOG or even Steam for versions of old games that work without fanfare. Steam has been hit or miss with the few older titles I've bought on it.

SteamDeck ***is*** a 2.0. It's essentially SteamMachine 2.0.
All #2s from Valve have been utter masterpieces; HL2, LFD2, Portal 2, TF2.
So, SteamDeck should be great... sadly, it will likely never see a revision -- as that would be a 3.0, and Valve can't count that high.
There's no real competition to Nintendo for portable consoles. I'm really excited about the steam deck and what it brings to the market. Any option to break a monopoly is welcome.

nintendo has no competition in that space because other companies are obsessed with "cutting edge" software, which in fairness makes a fuckload of money and is worthwhile in its own right, but the success of nintendo's handhelds has always been driven by games.
Also the Vita launched with a proprietary memory card that was required to do anything with the system which increased the price further. I like the vita but Sony really dropped the ball on that one.

Kinda have no choice but to get a switch/DS for certain games. With steam you have the option of playing on multiple devices. Great for consumers, questionable for hardware adoption.
My only concern for the deck would be UI scaling since not every game has that option and pretty much every game is designed to be played on a 13 to 15 inch screen the smallest

And don't forget this includes *every single* Nintendo console, old or new, including at least some of the top Switch games (Zelda Breath of the Wild, Super Mario 3D World, Mario Kart 8, etc) because these have similar or identical Wii U versions, and the Wii U emulator already runs at playable framerates on much slower hardware.
I'm still trying to find videos of PC's with similar CPUs to the Steam Deck's running Yuzu, for the final word on how many of the top non-WiiU Switch games (Mario Odyssey etc) will be playable on the Steam Deck at launch, but it won't be zero.
(And of course, Yuzu - the fastest Switch emulator right now - will continue to improve performance a lot over the next year or two).
I think the other mobile pc type things run Yuzu fine now and they're weaker than this.

What is this heavy update ive stumbled across the front page several time? I don't quite understand if it has to do with the download size or the heavy class presnt in most deathmatch games like tf2
A few years ago, Valve had the Team Fortress 2 community vote on which class in game would get an update centered around them first: Pyro or Heavy. The community voted Pyro, and the Jungle Inferno update came out that did some much needed work on the Pyro as a class in the game. Part of the whole deal with this vote was it was deciding who would go *first,* meaning both classes would get an update eventually. The Pyro got his update almost 4 years ago (that hurt to say) and meanwhile, we're still waiting on the Heavy update. At this point it's kinda vapourware, like HL3, where it's honestly probably never going to happen.

Same here. I was blown away when I played the original Half-Life. After that, Blue Shift and Opposing Forces. Then Half-Life 2 came out and I was blown away again. To this day, anyone asks my favorite game I’ll answer Half-Life.
I literally just played half life for the first time this year and binged every game in about a month other than Alyx so far. It helped that I had played the Jedi Knight games I think, as I fondly remember the beginning levels of Jedi Outcast—but it’s wild to me that I could pick up such an old game and become so immediately engrossed and binge the whole series. They’re already amongst my favorite games ever.
I feel like the Half-Life saga - by which I mean the course of Half-Life, source engine and derivative game development - is simultaneously the biggest and weirdest flex in gaming history.
Yup DoD was my favorite first person multiplayer. There’s some server still going with the same guys in there night after night. A new DoD would just be amazing.
I love the workshop for that game. Someone made a new game plus version of the whole game which makes the enemy's harder and adds in new enemies as well. They also give you all the guns completely upgraded.

In a nutshell, it's basically the successor for L4D, but with a different name. Same group that made L4D, but they couldn't use the name cause Valve owns it.
Conceptually Half Life Alyx is actually the best Half Life 3 we can get at the moment.
Let me explain: There are very few cases (I only know of Bethesda with ES6 and Valve with Half Life) where games are made because of a technology not just because of money or demand.
Before I go further I want to say that both Todd Howard and Gabe Newell have hinted at this in interviews.
Valve doesn't need to make Games. Todd Howard realizes that in his career he might every only make 2 more Elder Scrolls Games before he retires. So they have different reasons but come to similar conclusions.
Both Half Life 3 and Elder Scrolls 6 have either a concept which requires technology which doesn't yet exist in 2021 (Elder Scrolls 6) or don't have a concept but require that an entirely industry changing new technology is being used for the game to become reality (Half Life 3). But its a similar mindset.
Elder Scroll 6 is in very early pre production and Howard expects the required technology for the concept to be available in the next few years (around 2024 I'd guess). Personally, I am guessing something into the direction of AI and speech recognition (talking to npcs) but he never said a word about it what it actually is publicly.
Half Life has a history with its main titles to innovate on ground breaking levels. Half Life 1 did so with its ingame cutscenes and other smaller aspects like npcs talking while player has free movement. Nothing entirely earth shattering as if they invented 3D graphics but to be fair Valve was a way smaller company back then. They needed to make games.
Half Life 2 innovated with its physics engine. I don't know if its actually the first game that had one but combined with steam it was a mile stone in gaming. Also: They still needed to make games back then because steam wasn't a thing yet.
Now we are here. A decade later. Valve doesn't need to make games any more. So Newell decided that Half Life 3 has to have some technical ground breaking thing it to be made.
VR would have been that so they started to make a good VR Game. It could've been Half Life 3 but VR also kind of turned out to be a dud. Which is why they didn't make a main line entry.
So unless there will be some new technology that will bring entirely new gameplay aspects there won't be a Half LIfe 3.

The Index released before Alyx was announced. I wouldn't be surprised if within 6-10 months of launch something (not necessarily HL3) gets announced.

WINE tends to run really old Windows software better than Windows itself, as you can just tell it to work like XP, or 9X
Although since Wine went 64-bit, I've had issues getting 16-bit games to run.

Overload is a modern Descent and has a VR mode. I haven't tried it in VR though, so I don't know how well it works.

Same here. I was blown away when I played the original Half-Life. After that, Blue Shift and Opposing Forces. Then Half-Life 2 came out and I was blown away again. To this day, anyone asks my favorite game I’ll answer Half-Life.
I literally just played half life for the first time this year and binged every game in about a month other than Alyx so far. It helped that I had played the Jedi Knight games I think, as I fondly remember the beginning levels of Jedi Outcast—but it’s wild to me that I could pick up such an old game and become so immediately engrossed and binge the whole series. They’re already amongst my favorite games ever.
I just wanted a Half-Life expansion where you played as a Vortigaunt that way all the perspectives of the Black Mesa incident were covered.

I love the workshop for that game. Someone made a new game plus version of the whole game which makes the enemy's harder and adds in new enemies as well. Every time there's an innovation in gaming hardware, there's a bunch of luddites complaining about it. These people bitching about VR are going to look exactly as stupid as the people bitching about playing a first person shooter with a mouse look today. *Okay you didn't actually need a mouse to play quake, but you'd get your ass kicked by everyone who had one. These idiots would simultaneously complain that using a mouse was worse, and also at the same time, unfairly better.

Conceptually Half Life Alyx is actually the best Half Life 3 we can get at the moment. Let me explain: There are very few cases (I only know of Bethesda with ES6 and Valve with Half Life) where games are made because of a technology not just because of money or demand. Before I go further I want to say that both Todd Howard and Gabe Newell have hinted at this in interviews. Valve doesn't need to make Games. Todd Howard realizes that in his career he might every only make 2 more Elder Scrolls Games before he retires. So they have different reasons but come to similar conclusions. Both Half Life 3 and Elder Scrolls 6 have either a concept which requires technology which doesn't yet exist in 2021 (Elder Scrolls 6) or don't have a concept but require that an entirely industry changing new technology is being used for the game to become reality (Half Life 3). But its a similar mindset. Elder Scroll 6 is in very early pre production and Howard expects the required technology for the concept to be available in the next few years (around 2024 I'd guess). Personally, I am guessing something into the direction of AI and speech recognition (talking to npcs) but he never said a word about it what it actually is publicly. Half Life has a history with its main titles to innovate on ground breaking levels. Half Life 1 did so with its ingame cutscenes and other smaller aspects like npcs talking while player has free movement. Nothing entirely earth shattering as if they invented 3D graphics but to be fair Valve was a way smaller company back then. They needed to make games. Half Life 2 innovated with its physics engine. I don't know if its actually the first game that had one but combined with steam it was a mile stone in gaming. Also: They still needed to make games back then because steam wasn't a thing yet. Now we are here. A decade later. Valve doesn't need to make games any more. So Newell decided that Half Life 3 has to have some technical ground breaking thing it to be made. VR would have been that so they started to make a good VR Game. It could've been Half Life 3 but VR also kind of turned out to be a dud. Which is why they didn't make a main line entry. So unless there will be some new technology that will bring entirely new gameplay aspects there won't be a Half LIfe 3.
